Kurz angeschaut: iPod touch-AIM-Client
Wer einen Account im amerikanischen iTunes Store besitzt, kann über den dortigen App Store kostenlos den AOL-Chat-Client AIM für das iPhone und den iPod touch beziehen. Nach einem Kurztest auf dem iPhone hat die kostenlose Applikation einen ausgesprochen guten Eindruck bei uns hinterlassen. Beim ersten Programmstart wird man nach den Login-Informationen (AIM, MobileMe oder .Mac) gefragt und kann alternativ auch einen neuen Account anlegen.
Einmal angemeldet, sieht man eine Liste Online-Buddys und kann diese per Fingertipp anchatten. Der Client unterstützt auch mehrere Chats gleichzeitig, mann kann die Chatfenster dann wie die offenen Safari-Tabs mit dem Finger hin- und herschieben. Wem seine Buddy List zu unübersichtlich wird, der kann sich in einem separaten Fenster Favoriten ablegen.

Power-generating dance floor hits UK club

Believe it or not, this actually isn't the first power-generating dance floor to harness some of the pent up energy of club-goers, but it is apparently the first one to hit the UK, and hopefully a sign of more to come. The Big Losers of the day are the APRs
Although the day has been excellent for Orange and the major retailers selling the iPhone, the biggest losers of the day have been the Apple Premium Resellers who, unlike in a number of other countries, have not had the right to sell it from the date of its release.
We're unaware of what will ultimately happen in our country, but this absence risks putting the relationship between Apple and it's "privileged" resellers a little more on edge.

2.54 Millions Macs in the 3rd Quarter?
According to Apple Insider, Apple will have surpassed 2.54 million Macs sold during the previous fiscal quarter, besting its previous record.
It is apparent that the company remains very dependant upon the American market which represents the majority of its sales. This new score raises Apple to third place in the market, something inconceivable two years ago.
It is perhaps time for its European subsidiary to really get back to work on communication and seduction.

Opera hat heute die erste öffentliche Beta-Version von Opera Mobile 9.5 für Touchscreen-Geräte zum Download bereitgestellt. iPhone 3G gelangt über Belgien zu Ebay
Wie schon beim Start des alten iPhone im letzten Jahr, gibt es einige, die sich nicht 24 Monate lang an T-Mobile binden möchten. Diejenigen suchen andere Wege, um an ein SIM-Lock-freies iPhone 3G zu gelangen. Bei der Klage gegen Psystar ist Apple zum Erfolg verdammt. Alles andere käme einer Katastrophe gleich. Am Anfang war alles einfach. Während Sony die Playstation 3 mit einem Blu-ray-Laufwerk ausstattete, konnte man für die Xbox 360 von Microsoft ein optionales HD-DVD-Laufwerk für einen fairen Preis erwerben. Mittlerweile ist der HD-DVD-Standard jedoch besiegt und seitdem gibt es keine (neuen) HD-Filme mehr für die Xbox 360.

NVidia Denies Rumors of Faulty GPUs
NVidia replied to question sent by Ars technica and formally denied rumors of mass GPU failures as we previously reported about it. According to their claims, the G84 and G86 chips would not be affected by the weak die/packaging material issue, and the sudden death of notebooks would only happen in certain specific conditions, still to be unveiled. According to NVidia, it is very unlikely that a NVIDA based notebook product will be affected.
In this story, and despite Ars Technica point of view, NVidia was not communicating enough to keep customers and IT websites informed about an on-going problem with GPU manufacturing and stability. Sun Microsystems hat eine zweite Betaversion von OpenOffice 3 veröffentlicht. Nachdem sich die kostenlose Bürosuite mit der ersten Beta der 3er-Version bereits in die Aqua-Oberfläche von Mac OS X integrierte, wurden nun zahlreiche kleinere Verbesserungen vorgenommen und Fehler behoben. Zum Beispiel erlaubt es der Druckdialog nun, festzulegen welcher Teil einer Tabelle gedruckt werden soll, und verschiedene Grammatik-Standards wurden hinzugefügt. A "Cheap" 128 SSD Model
It seems that the price of SSD starts going down, probably due to the higher availability as well as competition between manufacturers. Ridata announced new series of 2.5" SSDs with storage capacity ranging from 32 to 128 GB. Performance levels are good with respectively 120 MB/s and 80 MB/s in reading and writing mode. And prices range from "ONLY" 168 USD for the 32 GB model to 540 USD for the 128 GB unit. It will soon be financially interesting to replace the SuperDrive by a SSD to get a second storage unit in a notebook, especially for system and applications.

A Flash Memory Module that Last a Century
Source : DailytechOne of the main problem with current flash memory is the limited writing cycles of 10000. Indirectly reducing the long-term interest of SSD.
Japanese scientists claim to have found a way to get a NAND flash memory module able to support 100 millions writing cycle, instead of 10000 currently for the MLC NAND. In addition, one could engraved such chips at 10-nm while reducing working voltage, and consequently saving power.

Japan's AIST boasts of longer-life NAND flash memory

eBay steigert im zweiten Quartal Umsatz und Gewinn

Intel Larrabee mit GDDR5 und 12-Layer-PCB?
Nvidia und ATi sind bekannte Namen im Markt der Desktop-Grafikkarten. Ein Bundessrichter im US-Staat Oregon hat einer im Februar 2007 von zwei Call-Center-Mitarbeitern gegen ihren Arbeitgeber Dell eingereichten Klage den Status einer Sammelklage zuerkannt. Apples Marktanteil im Computersegment steigt dank starken Mac-Verkäufen weiterhin an. Marktanteil von Mac OS X nimmt weiter zu
Im zweiten Quartal konnte Apple seinen Anteil im US-PC-Markt weiter ausbauen. Laut Zahlen der Marktforscher von IDC hat das Unternehmen im Vergleich zum zweiten Quartal 2007 31,7 Prozent mehr Computer verkauft. Der Marktanteil von Apple stieg von 6,2 auf 7,8 Prozent. "Apple hat exzellente Produkte und sie verkaufen sich gut", sagte der IDC-Analyst Loren Loverde in einem Telefoninterview. "Apple profitiert auch von der Beliebtheit seiner anderen Produkte und der Berichterstattung in der Presse." New hard disks from Toshiba
Source : ToshibaToshiba presented two new ranges of 2.5" hard drives.
- The first, proposes disks equipped with platters of 200 GB and spinning at 5400 rpm. The spearhead of this range will be a disk of 400 GB equipped with 8 MB of cache and a thickness of 9,5mm. If this is not a record of capacity, it is for the density of the data.
- The second joined the competition of disks spinning at 7200 rpm with a maximum capacity of 320 GB and equipped with 16 MB of cache. According to Toshiba, these disks went through a very thorough optimization in order to push the performances to the maximum.

Gartner and IDC Numbers out...but what if iPhones were computers...
Gartner and IDC just released their most recent numbers on PC Marketshare and Apple, as expected, climbed up the ranks again. Depending who you ask they are either slightly ahead or slightly behind the Acer/Gateway/Packard Bell mashup which puts them around tied for third place. The interesting thing is iPod touches and iPhones aren't counted as computer sales. Should they be?
iPhones have the same specs as laptops had about 5 years ago.
They can do most of the things a full computer can
They are as functional as UMPCs which are tallied in the total.
They are used in much the same way as computers, replacing computers much of the time for people on the move

Apple apologises for the poor transition to Mobile.me and offers an extra month
In an open letter addressed to its customers, Apple apologises for problems involved in the transition from .mac to Mobile.me.
To calm the grumbling which has started, they will offer to everyone a one month extension with their service.
This unprecedented commercial gesture should calm the majority of the dissatisfied,especially since now the situation has been resolved.
This extra month should appear on the accounts in the next few days.

iPod makes everything better
Apple's apps continue to pour in as they approach a total of 1000. For common things like crossword puzzles, there are a few choices that range from mediocre to amazing. In this particular case, the best crossword puzzle is easily 2across by Eliza Block. Perfectly done. You can download both paid crossword puzzles like the New York Times or hundreds of quality free puzzles (Village Voice, The Onion?!).
The interface is almost perfect. You can move smoothly between puzzle, questions and split view. It even lets you check your answers or cheat. Of course, we can't vouch for this feature because we haven't needed it :/
