Purported Nikon Coolpix P6000 turns up online

Microwave ray gun promises to put sounds in people's heads

As we've seen countless times, ray guns can employ any number of less than lethal means to stop their targets in their tracks, and it looks like the Sierra Nevada Corporation is making some progress on one of the more novel methods, with its MEDUSA system apparently able to beam sounds into people's heads. Italian customers furious at most expensive European iPhone deal
Just like Canada, Italian iPhone customers are angrily denouncing the deals they're being offered by Vodafone Italy and Telecom Italia for the iPhone 3G. Italian customers reckon they are being stitched-up by both.
Italian users are so angry that they're expected to pay double what anyone in the US or UK must pay for using an iPhone that they've also launched a petition against it. While the campaign hasn't ignited the same level of international interest as that against the deals on offer from Rogers Wireless in Canada, the petition has still attracted 3,000 signatures inside a week.
"TIM and Vodafone prices are way too high and completely beyond any level of acceptability," the petition reads. "For this reason, all we ask is a price adjustment in line with the italian market. Otherwise, we’ll be forced to boicot the 3G iPhone."

Casio EX-F1 gets "prerecord movie" function with new firmware update

Casio's EX-F1 camera already had a pretty solid claim to fame with its 60 fps burst mode and ability to shoot 1,200 fps SuperSloMo video, but it now looks like it's getting another solid boost with its new, slightly unnerving firmware upgrade. Erste Spezifikation für DVB-T2 veröffentlicht
Heute wurden die ersten Spezifikationen für den DVB-T-Nachfolger «DVB-T2» publiziert. Die neue Technologie soll das digital-terrestrische Fernsehen unter anderem besser für HDTV rüsten. Neu kann statt MPEG-2 (DVD) auch in MPEG-4 AVC (h.264) kodiert werden. Neu soll DVB-T2 auch mit ‘Low Density Parity Check’ (LDPC) wie bereits bei DVB-S (digitales Sat-Fernsehen) als Fehlerkorrektur-Technik verwendet werden. DVB-T2 ist abwärtskompatibel zu DVB-T und wurde heute dem Europäischen Institut für Telekommunikationsnormen (ETSI) zur Standardisierung übergeben. Erste Empfängergerät-Prototypen sollen noch dieses Jahr folgen.

Preise bekannt: USB-Dongle EFi-X verwandelt PC in einen Mac
Es gibt mittlerweile viele Wege, Mac OS X auf allerlei Arten von PCs zu installieren – vom herkömmlichen Desktop-Computer über Notebooks bis hin zu Kleinstcomputern wie dem EeePC ist mittlerweile alles möglich. Eines haben die Lösungen für all jene Geräte aber gemeinsam: sie sind meist kompliziert und nicht immer problemlos anzuwenden – und wenn Apple dann einmal ein neues Systemupdate veröffentlicht, kann es schon einmal passieren, dass das "gehackte" Mac-System nicht mehr läuft. Flash Lite runs on the iPhone
Adobe Flash is already running on an iPhone, well, Flash Lite does just that thanks to Belgian designer/coder Thomas Joos.
Joos has managed to port Flash onto an iPhone in order to run an event guide he had prepared for a local music festival. While the developer hasn't managed to make Flash run as a browser plug-in he has managed to get the Adobe multimedia software running, thanks to b.Tween and a graphics tool called eyeGT. O2 website fails on iPhone 3G frenzy: no 16GB or white models in UK
Yet more news as O2's UK iPhone 3G launch unravels - the 16GB iPhone isn't available yet, there's no white model, and we won't see a pay-as-you-go option until Christmas.
The UK carrier alerted iPhone customers this morning with a text message promising them the chance to upgrade their iPhone to the new iPhone 3G now, in exchange for which they will receive the new model on 11 July, when it ships.
"To thank you for being an iPhone fan, we're offering you an early upgrade to iPhone 3G. You don't have to wait until the end of your existing contract, all you'll need to do is agree to a new 18-month minimum term contract," the company said. DRM warfare: iTunes UK faces Amazon, 7digital
Apple's iTunes service may face a double-pronged competitor in the UK market by the end of summer, as more major labels reportedly prepare to offer their music DRM-free here.
The UK's second-largest online music service 7 Digital today announced that sales through its online store had climbed 300 per cent since the introduction of DRM-free downloads from Warner Music through its UK service.
"It is now clear that MP3 downloads represent the future for digital music. With two of the four major labels now supporting MP3 in the UK, we expect to see the whole market supporting MP3 in the not-too-distant future," said 7digital CEO Ben Drury.

SSD and 2.5" HD: Fight about Power Consumption
Couple of days ago, Tom's Hardware ignite fire by publish a test aiming to compare power consumption of SSD vs. 2.5HD. Surprisingly, and against all claims published by HD manufacturers, Toms found that SSDs use more power than traditional notebook HD. Several readers and websites quickly question the test procedure used by Toms while pointing out to some serious flaws in testing. Toms Hardware ran a benchmark designed to keep the notebook active all time regardless of the performance level or amount of crunched data. As a result, the higher efficiency of SSDs was leading to slight higher power consumption. Indeed toms test did not take into account the fact that with such SSDs most task and/or request will be performed faster than from a traditional HD, so requiring less disk usage.

Neues MacBook Pro: Neues Design?
Was wäre der Wochenanfang in der Apple-Gemeinde ohne die passenden Gerüchte? Da soll es beispielsweise bald ein neues MacBook Air geben. Studie: Server-Virtualisierung wächst in Europa rasant
Unternehmen, die Server-Virtualisierung nutzen, rechnen bis zum Jahr 2009 mit einem Zuwachs von 52 Prozent an neu zu virtualisierenden Servern. Dieser Anteil betrug im Jahr 2007 noch 35 Prozent. Von den befragten Unternehmen, die diese Technologie gegenwärtig noch nicht nutzen, wollen 54 Prozent innerhalb der nächsten zwölf Monate Virtualisierungstechnologie einsetzen. Die Firmen erhoffen sich davon Verbesserungen in den Bereichen Disaster Recovery, Datensicherungsfähigkeit und Systemverfügbarkeit. Das sind die Ergebnisse einer im Juni 2008 erhobenen Studie von IDC.

Segway und Apple kommen zusammen
Als Steve Jobs vor einigen Jahren eines der ersten Segway vorgestellt wurde, fand er dessen Design ziemlich hässlich. Jetzt wechselt der Chefdesigner von Segway, Doug Field, zu Apple als "Vice Product Design" und hinterlässt bei Segway eine große Lücke, wie in deren Forum zu lesen ist. Offiziell: iPhone auch im Media Markt
Die Telekom hat eben in einer Pressemitteilung bestätigt, dass das iPhone 3G mit T-Mobile-Vertrag auch über Handelspartner wie Media Markt und Gravis erhältlich sein wird:
Das Apple iPhone 3G wird ab dem 11. Juli 2008 in rund 800 Telekom Shops und erstmals auch bei über 1.000 weiteren Verkaufsstellen ab 1 Euro (in Verbindung mit dem Tarif Complete L oder XL) erhältlich sein. Zu den Fachhandelspartnern, die erstmals das iPhone vertreiben werden, zählen neben über 600 Telekom Partnern ausgewählte Outlets der Fachhandelsketten The Phonehouse, Euronics/Medimax, Gravis und die debitel Group gemeinsam mit der Media Saturn Holding sowie der eigenen Shopkette dug.
Das iPhone 3G wird bei den Fachhändlern ausschließlich in Verbindung mit einem Zweijahresvertrag von T-Mobile zu den gleichen Konditionen wie in den Telekom Shops vertrieben. Wie das Vorgängermodell wird auch das iPhone 3G zusätzlich im Webshop von T-Mobile angeboten.

Comparing Leopard and Snow Leopard
The website mac-zone.nl run a test aiming to compare Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.4 and the Snow Leopard version distributed during the WWDC using GeekBench as a benchmarking tool.
The test was performed on a MacBook Pro, and did not unveil any performance gain when running 32-bits applications, and only marginal improvement with 64-bits applications. This is not surprising, as Snow Leopard is far from being gold or finalized, and optimization are for sure not there yet. One will have to wait for additional months before having the first real view of a true Snow Leopard, and one should not forget that most changes are inside, in deep layers of the code and OS organization, preparing our favorite system for the multicore (CPU/GPU) revolution to come in the coming years.

No Defective NVidia GPU in our Macs?
According to Digitimes, the defective GPU shipped by NVidia for powering notebook graphic cards should be the GF 8500M launched in 2007.
If this information is confirmed, as NVidia does not really want to communicate about it, Apple would then not be affected as Cupertino only used the GF 8600M GT for powering the MacBook Pro.
Last but not least, in Taiwan, this story is making quite some noise, as several companies would like to identify which one is the bad black duck; in order to avoid dealing with it, as such issue might have a huge impact on a company's image as well as on a financial aspect.

Die Shareware TotalTunes Control bekam neben zahlreichen Bugfixes und Verbesserungen in Version 2.4.1 eine Songtextsuche verpasst.
Die Freeware iTunesVolume wurde weiter optimiert und ist jetzt in Version 1.1.4 erhältlich.
TrailRunner, ein kostenloser Streckenplaner für Lauffreunde, der Karten auch auf den iPod exportiert wurde ebenfalls verbessert, läuft aber in der neuen Version 1.7 nur noch mit Mac OS 10.5.

Tesla Roadster takes 30 hours to charge from a standard wall socket
Filed under: TransportationIf you've got the coin to roll deep enough to own a Tesla Roadster, we'd imagine that making sure the car gets its 8 hour charge from a 220v / 80A circuit (like what powers your washing machine) won't be a huge issue. But if not, think twice about your driving schedule with the all-electric sports car, because while you can technically power a Roadster from any standard wall outlet, the amount of draw a standard 110v / 15A plug delivers would mean a 30 hour wait to juice up your vehicle's thousand pound battery pack. Apple to start making people-movers? Segway CTO moves to Apple
Yes, you heard right, the Cheif Technology officer at Segway, Doug Field, has left the company to become a VP of product design at Apple.
What does this mean? Actually it means nothing but it isn't hard for the mind to wonder on this one. Remember Steve Jobs was one of the people who said the Segway (known as the Ginger project back then) was as big a deal as the PC. Doug Field is a guy who has dealt with electronics that go into motors and wheels and balancing his whole career. When you look at Apple's product roadmap, there is nothing currently there that fits into his expertise.

Steuererklärung am PC erhält massiven Zulauf
Die komplizierte Materie Steuererklärung sorgt bei vielen Bürgern für Verwirrung. Eine Lösung ist es, einen Steuerberater oder einen Lohnsteuerhilfeverein aufzusuchen - eine andere, den PC und ein entsprechendes Softwareprogramm zur Einkommenssteuererklärung zu nutzen. Apple Japan stellt iPhone 3G vor
Wie groß das Interesse am iPhone in Japan ist, variiert von Umfrage zu Umfrage und den gestellten Fragen. In jedem Fall kann eine Videovorstellung nicht schaden, die Apple nun auf die japanische iPhone-Website gestellt hat. In dem Video werden die Vorzüge ("immer und überall online", "praktisch und einfach zu bedienen", ein anderen Telefonen überlegenes Betriebssystem) angepriesen. Auch die Zusammenarbeit mit Windows und Mac OS X (Exchange-Unterstützung, Synchronisierung) wird unterstrichen. Das die Kamera nur 2 Megapixel hat, wird allerdings verschwiegen.

Apple sanctioning Rogers, diverting iPhones away?

Huge German company makes the switch, goes from PC to Mac.
Axel Springer (no relation to Axel Rose) is doing what no company of its size has done yet. It plans to move its 12,000 desktops to nearly 100% Mac. Besides the GooglePlex which is a mix of Macs, Windows and Linux and Apple itself, Axel Springer will become the biggest Mac shop in the world.

Prius to go (partially) solar

According to Nikkei, Toyota's apparently going to be equipping future high-end Priuses with Kyocera-built root-mounted solar panels. Somewhat counterintuitively, the sun's rays won't be used to power the car itself, but will instead run the AC. It also sounds like your next solar-assisted Prius won't be around for a while, as the panels aren't designed in yet, nor will they be until early next year when Toyota starts work on revamping the line.

iRobot (still) working on lawn-mowing Roomba?
Filed under: RobotsNot that it's any surprise, but according to a patent filing (which we were unable to ourselves unearth from the abyss that is the USPTO), iRobot would appear to still be working on the "Mowba," or whatever the hell the lawn-cutting robot is that they were talking up years ago. We're not sure you really need to pore over 80+ pages of sketches and drawings to get the idea though, especially since there are already a number of autonomous grass-cutting machines out there.
