Okay, third time's the charm -- here it is, a pre-production picture of the Skooba Checkthrough TSA-approved bag, direct from Skooba's CEO, Michael Hess. Offenherzige Notebook-Tasche für Flughafen-Sicherheitskontrolle
Notebooks können manchmal ziemlich gefährlich werden, etwa wenn Akkus entflammen oder geheime Waffen (sowohl in physikalischer als auch in Datenform) darin verborgen sind. Mitunter kann das Mitführen eines Laptops auch für Reisende gefährlich werden – dann nämlich, wenn man damit an einem US-amerikanischen Flughafen über die Grenze will. In der Vergangenheit kam es dabei hin und wieder vor, dass Laptops an der US-Grenze extra geöffnet und deren Datenbestand von den Sicherheitsbeamten inspiziert wurde – oder dass Apple-Notebooks gleich aufgrund ihrer Form als unbekanntes und daher gefährliches Objekt abgestempelt wurden. Vielleicht nicht all diesen Gefahren, aber doch zumindest der lästigen Pflicht des Herausnehmens des Notebooks aus der Transporttasche könnte eine neue Notebooktasche Abhilfe verschaffen, die extra für Grenzgänger entworfen wurde.

PhysX on ATI effort gets helping hand from NVIDIA

With all the furor over iPhone 3G prices and subscription costs, we're happy to find an invaluable resource for price-spotters, an international iPhone pricing guide.
We'd just set out to assemble one ourselves, which, given the nature of an international roll-out is harder than it looks, as so much of the small print in these deals is in languages foreign to us, turns out we didn't need to, as the venerable TUAW had the list already. So, we didn't know about it, and figure it could come in useful, and figured many others would find it of use.
One thing that is missing are details on WiFi access, which we understand varies from country to countru, with some potential customers complaining at the cost their carrier wants to charge.

Apple switching off .Mac July 9
Apple will introduce its MobileMe this week in preparation for the release of the iPhone 3G on July 11.
A note on the .Mac pages warns existing subscirbers should expect to lose access to their account, with the exception of dektop-based email access.
"As part of the MobileMe launch, www.mac.com will be taken offline at 6pm PT on Wednesday, July 9th," Apple warns. "Members will be unable to access www.mac.com or any .Mac services during this time with the exception of .Mac Mail accessed via a desktop application, iPhone, or iPod touch.
MobileMe will be available as soon as possible during this maintenance window."

Rechte an "iPhone" endlich angemeldet
Kaum zu glauben, dass das gefragteste Mobiltelefon aller Zeiten bisher keinen markenrechtlichen Schutz genoss. Zumindest die Rechte an dem Namen iPhone sind erst seit dem 4. Juli beim US-amerikanischen Patent- und Markenamt für Apple angemeldet. Grund dafür war ein Streit mit Cisco, die ebenfalls VoIP-Produkte mit der gleichen Bezeichnung veröffentlicht hatten. Nachdem man sich jedoch Anfang des Jahres darauf geeinigt hatte, den Namen parallel verwenden zu dürfen, stand der Sicherung der Rechte nichts mehr im Wege.

Urteil: Bank haftet für Schäden durch Phishing
Laut einem allerdings noch nicht rechtskräftigen Urteil des Amtsgerichts Wiesloch haftet eine Bank für Schäden, die ihren Kunden durch Phishing-Angriffe entstehen, sofern deren Computer gemäß den "durchschnittlichen Sorgfaltsanforderungen" geschützt sind. Darunter versteht das Gericht konkret den Einsatz eines Antivirenprogramms. Die Installation einer Firewall oder die regelmäßige Aktualisierung der Software wurde nicht berücksichtigt. Experten schließen nicht aus, dass das Urteil zum Präzedenzfall wird und künftig alle Banken zur Haftung verpflichtet.

Apple löst Onlinedienst .Mac am Mittwoch ab
Apple hat laut einem Bericht von VentureBeat im Rahmen eines Service-Updates den Start des .Mac-Nachfolgers MobileMe angekündigt. C und C++ für den Browser
Scott Petersen ist Entwickler bei Adobe und hat einige Werkzeuge entwickelt, um C- und C++-Code in ActionScript umzuwandeln, das dann in Flash ausgeführt werden kann. Bereits im Oktober 2007 zeigte Petersen eine Version von Quake, die so in Flash läuft. Schon in der ersten Pressemitteilung über das iPhone kündigte Orange an, Apples Mobiltelefon auch ohne Vertrag anzubieten. Nun stehen die Preise für das vertragsfreie iPhone offenbar fest. Für das 8-GB-Modell verlangt Orange CHF 759.-, das Modell mit 16 Gigabyte Speicher kostet CHF 899.-. Das Tod durch Überfahren mit dem Auto nicht das Ende für einen iPod bedeuten muss, beweist ein Eintrag auf craftster.org. Anstatt einen defekten iPod 5G 30 GB dem Sondermüll zu übergeben, modifizierte ihn ein Bastler zur voll einsatzfähigen Computermaus. Das Innenleben des iPod war völlig zerstört und wurde mit den entsprechenden Sensoren und weiteren Elementen einer Maus ersetzt. Um den Sensor einsatzfähig zu machen, musste natürlich ein Loch in die Rückseite des iPod geschnitten werden.

Sony Invests on Display Technologies

Wer erinnert sich noch an das rechts abgebildete iTunes-Symbol? Anfang 2001 hat Apple die erste Version der heute bald auf jedem Computer installierten Software veröffentlicht, damals noch mit drei drei einzelnen, fliederfarbenen Noten im Icon und einem Platzbedarf von weniger als fünf Megabyte auf der Festplatte.
Diese Woche steht uns iTunes in Version 7.7 ins Haus. Das Programm wird dann deutlich über 100 Megabyte belegen und kann im Gegensatz zu seiner Urversion nicht nur mit Audiodateien, sondern auch mit Filmen umgehen und beherbergt zudem eine virtuelle Shopping Mall, in der es neben Musik und Videos dann auch Software für den iPod und das iPhone gibt.

Blu-ray schafft jetzt 400 GB
Als die Blu-ray noch mit der HD-DVD konkurrierte, war die maximale Speicherkapazität eine Eigenschaft, mit der die Hersteller warben. Pro Schicht (Layer) lag die HD-DVD hinter der Blu-ray (15 gegenüber 25 GB), also wurde gestapelt - die dreilagige HD-DVD fasste 51 GB. Bei zwei Schichten (50 GB) ist für Blu-ray allerdings noch nicht Schluss. TDK hatte vor einiger Zeit erst eine vierlagige Scheibe mit 100 und dann eine sechslagige mit 200 GB vorgestellt.

Wenn alles nach Plan läuft, steht Apples neuer Online-Service MobileMe bestehenden .Mac-Mitgliedern und Neuabonnenten ab Donnerstag früh zur Verfügung.
