Flat-panel TV sales jump 23% over last year, Vizio leads the way
We'd already heard that Vizio has vaulted back into first place among LCD TV manufacturers, but a new series of numbers compiled by the folks at DisplaySearch is now shedding a bit more light onto how much the flat-panel TV market as a whole has surged over the past year. Apparently, about 7.2 million flat-panel sets were moved during the first quarter of 2009 alone, which represents a sizable 23% increase over the numbers from the first quarter of 2008. Tokyo researchers develop rubber-like OLED display

Microsoft to sell bonds for the first time
The world's largest software vendor, Microsoft, is selling bonds for the first time as of today. Despite having $25 billion in cash, the company has at least enough demand for $15 billion in bonds, an investor says. WhoPaste 1.1 now compatible with Contacts, Entourage
Mac-Chi has released version 1.1 of its contact-grabbing utility, WhoPaste. The program allows the creation contact records in a variety of data stores by copying text to the Clipboard, and then activating a user-configurable hotkey. Monitor Audio Airstream 10 WiFi radio gets the hands on treatment
While Monitor Audio's new Airstream 10 WiFi / DAB radio unfortunately isn't a radio inspired by a vintage Airstream trailer, it is nonetheless pretty eye catching in its own right, and fairly full featured as far as WiFi radios go. Apparently, the radio can either be stood upright or placed on its side, and it'll let you listen to some standard FM or DAB radio, or hop onto a network via WiFi or Ethernet to either stream some tunes off your Mac or PC or tune into some internet radio stations. FreshBooks adds network collaboration [video]

Microsoft Windows 7 'on track' for the holiday season
Well, we thought this might happen -- especially after the news that Acer's Z5600 all-in-one will be shipping with Windows 7 pre-loaded, come October 23rd of this year. And now it's official: Windows 7 is on track to be released this "holiday season." Now, this announcement may be officially vague, but it is official. WSJ: AT&T should charge more for iPhone users
Last week we heard AT&T might be charging less for iPhone usage. Today the Wall Street Jornal is saying that AT&T should charge more for data hungry iPhones. iPhone users use the web much more than any other smartphone's users (except Android?) and according to comScore, web usage is much more data intensive than other network tasks like email or chatting.
The 3.0 version of the software will only increase usage because of the push notifications.

Flexible, stretchable, rubbery OLED prototype shown off in Tokyo
Electrical engineering researchers at the University of Tokyo have developed a flexible, stretchable OLED that acts something like rubber, and does not tear or break when stretched. The material is produced by spraying a layer of carbon nanotubes with a fluoro-rubber compound, creating a rubbery, conducive material. The current, monochrome display prototype has a resolution of just 256 pixels, is 10-centimeters square, and can apparently be folded about 1,000 times with out falling apart, tearing, or imploding. Citrix brings another Virtualization option to the Mac Platform
Citrix (via MacRumors) demonstrated a new version of its Virtualization software for the Mac Platform this week. As a background, Citrix has had Windows client software for the Macintosh since OS9 which allows you to login to a Windows box somewhat like VNC. They've also built an iPhone client for this functionality which we covered last year.
This new virtual machine software they've produced for the Mac is much like VMWare Fusion or Parallels in functionality but operates on a lower level, letting the Windows partition have native access to hardware like the 3D card, thereby theoretically giving you Boot Camp performance in a virtual machine. Citrix is enterprise player so they haven't really explored the usage for gaming.

Wer schon immer mal eine Ausrede dafür gesucht hat, unbedingt ein iPhone oder einen iPod touch zu haben, der sollte sich bei der Universität in Missouri, Columbia, einschreiben. Wer dort ab Herbst den Studiengang Journalistik belegt, dem wird dazu geraten, ein solches Gerät mitzubringen.

Mozilla hat eine erste Beta von Prism 1.0 freigegeben, seinem Pendant zu Microsoft Silverlight oder Adobe AIR. Apple TV: Wenn das Streaming stoppt - weil der Mac einschläft
Apple TV ist in der Lage von einem Mac direkt zu streamen (über iTunes), ohne dabei die interne Platte zu nutzen.
Ein Problem dabei ist aber, dass der die Daten zur Verfügung stellende Mac diesen Vorgang nicht mitbekommt und trotz des laufenden Streaming in den Ruhezustand fällt - woraufhin das Streaming sofort stoppt.
Das ist lästig und lässt sich auf diese Weise verhindern:
In den Systemeinstellungen den Punkt “Energie sparen” aufrufen und dort die Option “Ruhezustand des Computer” auf “Nie” stellen - den Slider dazu nach ganz rechts ziehen.

Samsung erwartet 2009 geringes Wachstum bei Speicherchips

Dell slips out sub-$150 20-inch LCD

iPod touch bekommt Schüttelfunktion
Die bereits vom iPod nano bekannte Schüttelfunktion wird nach dem Software-Update auf OS 3.0 (voraussichtlich im Juni) auch auf dem iPod touch verfügbar sein. Eine entsprechende Einstellung findet sich bereits in der aktuell an Entwickler ausgegebenen Beta-Version des neuen Betriebssystems. EU fordert mehr Verbraucherschutz für Software-Käufer

While one can still find the Radeon X1900 XT, an aging graphic card (2 years old) at an insane price on the Apple Store, the US Apple online store indicates that the NVidia GeForce 8800GT is now tagged as "end-of-life" (EOL).Other Apple Stores should soon indicate the same status for this product. Deep Sleeping Mode Problem when Replacing SuperDrive with HD or SSD
More and more users decided to remove their optical drive unit, aka SuperDrive, in their Macbook/Macbook Pro Unibody to install a second storage unit, either a disc-based HD or a SSD. Indeed, optical media are not as popular as it used to be in the past.
Over the time, we noticed that when replacing the SuperDrive by a HD/SSD, we were experiencing problems with the deep sleeping mode. this is the case if you decide to install the booting volume on the storage unit replacing the SuperDrive. If you turn your computer into the deep hibernation mode, the Mac will not go into sleep mode, fan will start spinning full speed and your battery will be drained quickly. You have 2 solutions to solve this problem:
Install the system booting volume of the HD/SDD located near the battery, if necessary swap location of your 2 HDs/SSDs.

GPUs Break the 1 GHz Barrier
ATI/AMD is successful with tis Radeon HD 4890. those cards are particularly designed for the overclock, and it will become a perfect solution if you modify the cooling system to make it more efficient and avoid having it permanently blowing. This is the first GPU that can easily reach and go beyond 1 GHz without massive mod. Many PC manufacturers expect to offer graphic cards with such clock frequency in their future hardware models. XFX already started to manufacture overclocked cards in small volume. They simply increased the voltage by 0.1 V and installed a better heatsink. Most manufacturers will also change capacitors for higher quality components able to last longer with such more demanding GPU. As a proof of concept, we overcloked our Radeon HD 4890 to 1 GHz, and performed two GLView benchmarks prior the crash of the card.

A few more of the tablet's specs have emerged since our initial gander, including the fact that it'll house a 66tMHz Samsung ARM S3C6410 CPU, 128MB of RAM, and 1GB of flash memory.
