HP Mini 1000 six-cell battery gets examined, frightens other batteries
It's been a long time coming, but the six-cell battery for HP's Mini 1000 netbook is now finally making its way into the hands of some eager users, and jkOnTheRun has taken a minute to give folks an idea of what's in store. Amazon Kindling wooden e-book is a luddite's dream of the future

$399 Dell Inspiron 15 makes the scene
Here's a question: given the vagueness of definition and the trend towards larger screen sizes in general, how soon do you think Dell will start calling its new $399 Inspiron 15 configuration a "netbook?" AMD offers ATI Radeon HD 4890 at 1GHz

Palm Pre "real reviewer" units going out? Not so fast.
There's been a lot of chatter on both blogs and forums as of late stating that those "real reviewer" units Palm was promising to prospective owners -- essentially "everyman critics" -- would be sent out some time this week. There's an interesting debate that I've had recently. Should product designers aim for the enthusiast or "edge" cases when designing products, or should they instead target mainstream users from day one? It's an interesting discussion, but I believe that those that say "aim for the edge" and the enthusiast aren't correct, at least in the long run.Now if you're reading this, chances are you're a bit of an edge case -- or at the very least a gadget enthusiast. Apple Online Store now ships iPhone 3G
Apple has begun shipping iPhone orders placed on its online store. The company previously required customers to finalize the sale at a brick-and-mortar Apple Store. The eligibility checks, plan selection and add-on options can now be configured online for new customers, although existing AT&T customers still need to stop in at a retail store location.

European Commission Might Fine Intel for up to 4 Billion USD
According to recurrent rumors, the European commission might be on track to fine Intel for up to 4 billions USD for abuse of a dominant position and anti-trust violation for computer CPU over the past decades, mostly targeting AMD while this competitor was trying to enter the market. This figures was defined according to Intel's financial results, based on 10% of its income. This fine will set a new record, as Microsoft was only sentenced to pay around 680 millions USD. The decision is expected on Wednesday, and Intel might appeal, pushing the procedure further by couple of years, but last time this strategy did not pay for Microsoft.
[update] The European Commission released today its decision and fined Intel for abuse of a dominant position and anti-trust violation for computer CPU: 1.06 billion Euro. So, "only" 25% of the maximal theoretical financial decision that the EC could have requested. Intel already announced that the company will appeal.

Install a Radeon HD 4890 PC in a Mac Pro Without Flashing It!
We were dreaming about it, and Netkas did. Originating from the Hackintosh projects, those "extensions" can be installed on most PC version of Radeon without requiring to flash the BIOS of those cards. How does it work? In summary, those extensions works like the EFI code and force the card to be recognized by the Mac and to have them active in Mac OS X. UMID M1D making its way to Korea any day now
No, we still have no details on any upcoming releases of UMID's M1, but it seems that a slightly stripped down version -- the M1D -- is about to appear in Korea. This Mbook boasts a 1.1GHz Atom CPU (the M1 has a 1.3GHz Atom), and lacks both the webcam and the DMB module. Other than that, we're looking at the same cute little guy we've come to know and love. MobileMe not syncing iCal calendars properly

We've been following Nortel's MiFi with bated breath since its December announcement, and the totally pocketable 3G / WiFi router has finally graced a US carrier. The last time a GPU milestone this significant was passed, it was June of 2007, and we remember it well. MSI's long-lasting Wind U100 PLUS found in the wild, totally not worth it
We know it's a struggle to differentiate in the netbook market, MSI, but $533 US (based on the $699 Australian it's been spotted at) for 802.11n and a bit of extra standard battery life seems a bit of a stretch, especially in the face of Dell's aggressively priced and similarly specced Mini 10. 10.5.7 updates causing uncharacteristic problems
We've had a good 10.5.7 update experience (loads of snappiness™!) on our machines but the Internet is filling up with issues related to the massive install. MaxFixit goes over the major problems and the workarounds as per usual.
A good rule of thumb on this one is run a permissions repair before upgrading and the Combo updater seems a little safer.

Freenet meldet Umsatzsteigerung auf 912 Millionen Euro

NVIDIA: 50 Prozent der 9400M-Chips gehen an Apple
Bis auf den Mac Pro basieren alle Apple-Rechner momentan auf NVIDIAs GeForce 9400M Plattform. AT&T's fridge even more rotten than its 3G streaming limits
Look we're all guilty of generating a little fridge-fuzz now and again. A practice that's disgusting at home turns downright antisocial at the office. Or near-fatal if you work at AT&T's San Jose office where a dirty fridge sent 7 people to the hospital yesterday. The incident started when an office refrigerator was found unplugged and stuffed with moldy food. While cleaning the fridge, the combination of solvents with neatly labeled cups of rotting yoghurt and pork-roast parfaits created a cloud of toxic fumes that prompted a 911 call and the dispatch of a hazmat team. 28 people in total were treated for nausea and vomiting. AMD gewinnt Anteile im schrumpfenden Markt
Gemäß der letzten Studie der Marktforscher von IDC ist der Markt für x86-Prozessoren weiter deutlich geschrumpft, gegenüber dem ersten Quartal 2008 verbucht das erste Quartal 2009 sogar einen Umsatzrückgang von 25,1 Prozent. Bei nahezu stabilen Prozessorpreisen konnte eigentlich nur AMD leichte Gewinne verzeichnen.

Digging into Apple's OS X 10.5.7 update
729MB download reveals changes below the surfaceTuesday's release of OS X 10.5.7, the latest update to the Leopard operating system, weighed in at 449MB on my MacBook Pro; the combined updater (which will update any version of OS X 10.5 to 10.5.7) is a whopping 729MB. Even on a super-fast FIOS connection, it took about a few minutes to download the update, and quite a few more minutes to install - it seems that the “writing files” step takes longer and longer with each update.

Frankreich schafft Behörde zum Kampf gegen Filesharer
Mit 296 zu 233 Stimmen und 28 Enthaltungen haben die Abgeordneten der französischen Nationalversammlung gestern Abend für die Annahme eines Gesetzentwurfes zum Thema Urheberrecht und Internet gestimmt. Günstige Fahradhalterungen für Touch und iPhone
Im Hinblick auf die kommenden Sommermonate heißt es langsam wieder Luft ins Fahrad pumpen und die Ausstattung optimieren. In diesem Zusammenhang denkt man vielleicht auch über eine Fahrradhalterung für das iPhone oder den iPod touch nach.

MacBook Pro dieses Jahr mit Quad-Core-CPUs?
Es soll beim dritten Quartal 2009 bleiben: Intel plant weiter für diesen Zeitraum die Einführung der neuen Nehalem-basierten Calpella-Notebook-Plattform, so Digitimes. Calpella ist für Notebooks mit einer Displaygröße von 14 bis 18,4 Zoll vorgesehen und wird Prozessoren mit vier Kernen unterstützen. Allerdings sollen nur drei Mobilprozessoren dieses Jahr eingeführt werden, gleichzeitig wird Intel die Preise der älteren Montevina-Prozessoren senken, um die Lager zu räumen.

Slingplayer App now available
After all the hoopla, the Slingplayer is now available at the iTunes Store.
At $29.99, it represents a pretty serious comitment, but for many, having they television whereever they are (with WiFi) will be a small cost.
Also, jailbreakers note that it should be easy to make a workaround on this that allows Slingplayer to run on 3G Networks just like Skype and other VOIP aplications do. In fact, there might already be one.

Dell bans export of e-waste to developing countries

Apple Uses 50% of Nvidia GeForce 9400M Production
In an interview, Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO of NVidia, indicated that Apple was using 50% of the production of GeForce 9400M chipset, found today in all Mac except the Mac Pro. The GPU founder is of course please, especially considering the previous scandal of the mobile GPU 8600M. It is obvious that Apple has been for NVidia the lifebuoy in this difficult environment. AT&T explains 3G restriction for SlingPlayer app
Following the announcement that Sling Media's SlingPlayer iPhone app will only be available without support for 3G data, AT&T has released a statement explaining the restriction. The company blames the decision on network strain, as the large volume of data could potentially cause congestion and create access problems for other customers.

iPhone app prepares students for SAT exam words
The Princeton Review and Modality Inc. have released The Princeton Review's Vocab Challenge for the iPhone and the iPod touch. The application measures a user's knowledge of 250 words which are frequently included in SAT examinations. The app features four types of timed challenges with questions relating to positive or negative connotations, synonyms, antonyms and definitions.

Irgendwie ist heute eben doch Freitag: Apple hat Mac OS X 10.5.7 veröffentlicht. Wie schon bei den vorherigen Mini-Leos handelt es sich um ein größeres Update, Das Update von 10.5.6 ist 442 MB groß, das Combo-Update von jeder Leo-Version 729 MB. Die Server-Variante ist 452, beziehungsweise 951 MB groß. Die Updates enthalten mehr als 100 Änderungen und Fehlerbereinigungen, die auch diverse Apple-Anwendungen wie iCal und Mail betreffen. Bei aktuellen Macs mit NVIDIA-Grafikkarte soll sich die Leistung der Video-Wiedergabe verbessert haben.

WSJ: AT&T should charge more for iPhone users
Last week we heard AT&T might be charging less for iPhone usage. Today, the Wall Street Journal is saying that AT&T should charge more for data hungry iPhones. iPhone users use the web much more than any other smartphone's users (except Android?) and according to comScore, web usage is much more data intensive than other network tasks like email or chatting.
The 3.0 version of the software will only increase usage because of the push notifications.

Bittorrent clients/controllers/words are off of the iPhone acceptability list
iLounge is reporting that Apple has rejected a Bittorent client controller app for the iPhone. On the surface, it seems like a pretty standard move for Apple, who have a reputation for guarding digital rights.
After an initial email stating that Drivetrain required “unexpected additional time for review,” Maza then received a rejection email from Apple, stating that “this category of applications is often used for the purpose of infringing third party rights. We have chosen to not publish this type of application to the App Store.”

Mac Chromium early builds available for public consumption
If you don't mind a few bugs, lack of Flash and a lot of speed, you may want to give the new Google Chrome (Chromium) builds a try. The repository is being updated almost hourly.
First impressions:
It doesn't come with Flash but Flash can be installed and will be in future versions
It is really fast. Even with several tabs going, it is Safari 4 type fast.
Each tab is a seperate process (see below). Each one takes 1GB of Virtual Memory but less than 100MB of real RAM.
It doesn't run 64-Bit in Snow Leopard yet, only 32-Bit. It also doesn't run on PowerPC, the first Mac browser not to do so.

Zune Phone coming in June as well?
Some chatty character on Microsoft's Office 2010 Twitter account is espousing some pretty big words. The account seems legit because it is linked to directly from Microsoft's site.
He/she is implying that a Zune Phone will be released close to Apple's new iPhone and the Palm Pre in June
Says that Office 2010 will be "available" to Mac Users. Does that mean VM Available? AVMailable™
Facebook and Twitter baked right into Word? Ugh. That doesn't seem necessary does it?

WiFi-only Slingplayer app coming to iPhone for $30
Word on the street is that the much-anticipated Slingplayer.app will be hitting the App Storeanyminutenow. This follows numerous setbacks and reported rejections. The app will cost a hefty $29.99 and will unofficially work with all Slingplayers. This contradicts Sling's own website which said it would only work for newer models.
Additionally, the app will only work over Wifi, which eliminates much of the utility of having a Slingbox in your pocket. Sling had originally said that their app would work over Wifi, 3G and even EDGE. No doubt, AT&T and other carriers had a hand in this decision.

When it's not busy perpetrating negative stereotypes about alien cranium sizes, Dell's Alienware has been known to throw together a product teaser now and then.
