iPhone 3.0 beta caught hiding video editing graphics?
The founder of Austrian site Benm.at claims to have found multiple unused graphical controls that relate directly to video editing. Among the controls are grab points that would let users define the start and end of clips as well as repeating, tile graphics and references to an 'edit bar.'

Scientists develop first nanofluidic device with complex 3D surface, can function as a 'coin sorter' for nanoparticles
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and Cornell University have banded together and formed what they're touting is the first nanoscale fluidic device with with a complex three-dimensional surface. The staircase-shaped prototype is 10nm at its tiniest and 620nm at its tallest -- all smaller than the average bacterium, and a departure from the usual flat, rectangular-shaped fare. According to the press release, it can manipulate nanoparticles by size, similar to how coin sorters separate your pocket change. Potential uses includes helping to measure nanoparticle mixtures for drug delivery or gene therapy, or the isolation / confinement of individual DNA strands. From today's Newsweek:
the ugly attacks from Mac fanboys are exactly what Microsoft was hoping to provoke, says David Webster, general manager for brand marketing at Microsoft [The genius behind the pointless/expensive Seinfeld ads and the Mojave project that tanked]. He says the idea was to turn Apple's "I'm a Mac" campaign to Microsoft's advantage. iPhone 3,1 to have Broadcom BCM4329, 802.11N/5GHz Wireless, FM transmitter/receiver
According to the fine folks over at AI, the soon-to-be-released iPhone 3,1 references the Broadcom BCM4329 wireless chip in the boot script. This is a significant upgrade over the current Broadcom BCM4325 for a number of reasons. As they pointed out, the component upgrade adds power savings and new support for 802.11n features, including the ability to find and join 5GHz networks.
But they neglected to mention that it also adds the ability to receive and send (the previous model could only receive) information through FM radio signals which theoretically could be used to broadcast sound into car stereos..without external adapters. It could

Giant Nokia 5800 XpressMusic invades Antwerp
We're not sure why giant phones are suddenly all the rage, but it seems to be a trend -- Nokia just put up this four-foot 5800 XpressMusic in Antwerp. Unlike the giant Samsung Messager that recently invaded Chicago, it's not actually a working phone, but the custom Flash interface designed by Create Multimedia is meant to mimic the OS as closely as possible -- so we're guessing it's just as frustrating as the real thing. Passerby can play with the Maps app, browse photos, and listen to music through some nifty through-the-glass speakers -- hit the read link for the video.[Via

Archos 2 and Archos 4 flash players leak out
We haven't heard anything official, but images of an Archos 2 flash player have turned up in a few places on the web today, along with word of an Archos 4. The 2's already listed on Amazon -- it's not going to rock worlds, but it's not bad for $60, with 8GB of storage and microSD expansion, a 1.8-inch 128 x 160 display and a voice recorder all in a .035-inch thick package. There's also a 16GB version on Amazon.de for €68 ($92), but that hasn't yet made it to the US Amazon site. The Archos 4 is a little more mysterious -- all we really know about it is that it'll have a four-inch screen and 16 to 32GB of flash. We're guessing these'll pop soon, we'll let you know.[Thanks, Bill]

Savory for Kindle 2 automates PDF and EPUB conversions, doesn't make James Patterson any more enjoyable
We've seen surprisingly few Kindle 2 hacks 'round these parts, and therefore few apps that run on the beloved e-reader itself. One notable exception is Savory, which monitors the device's Documents directory for files sporting either the .epub or .pdf extensions -- when one of these guys rears its ugly head, it's converted to a Kindle filetype. The only hitch is that the program (as currently available) chokes on image-based PDFs -- according to the author, images in PDFs are fine, as long as there is some text to extract. Sure, the software doesn't do anything that Amazon doesn't already do for free -- but it does make the conversion quick and painless. Ready to give it a go? Dell netbook roadmap leaks out, get ready for the Mini 11
Oop, it looks like a Dell middle manager somewhere got a little too excited and let a full set of netbook roadmap slides leak out. The biggest news is a planned Mini 11 due sometime between now and the end of Q3, but the Mini 10 is where most of the action is in the short term -- the current model will get options for Vista, a 3G modem, and potentially a 1.86GHz Atom on April 17th, a new 1.6GHz Atom N270 SKU will arrive in May and everything will be updated again in the second half of the year with Intel's Pine Trail processors. Interesting, but we're wondering when Dell will realize that the Mini 10's HDMI output and 720p screen are useless unless it can handle true HD video -- I

Deleting individually selected files from the trash (or anywhere)
Mac OS X has a simple method for managing trashed items: The user selects a file to be deleted, sends it to the trash, and then empties the trash. The only additional feature built into OS X is the option to securely empty the trash, where the system will overwrite the file several times to ensure the magnetic patterns on the drive representing the file get altered enough that it is virtually impossible to recover them.
This simplicity can be quite limiting because it forces you to use the trash only as a temporary storage space for ALL enclosed items before they're permanently removed. There is no way to customize this behavior, but many people have inquired about being able to easily remove one or two items without removing the rest, essentially wishing to enable more flexibility in the default trash behavior.
