GM designing car windshield that does the looking for us

Apparently not everyone at General Motors is toiling away in an attempt to get the Volt ready for its 2010 debut, as another sector of the outfit's R&D division is busy creating a windshield that will, at its core, enable us to stop running stuff over. Nintendo says it's considering Wiimote with built-in MotionPlus

It's pretty far down on the surprise-o-meter, but it looks like Nintendo is at least considering the possibility of a Wiimote with built-in MotionPlus for further on down the road. That word comes straight from Nintendo's Katsuya Eguchi, who told a developer round table that, "as to looking at whether or not it will be an attachment or built in - we're always looking at how hardware should evolve and where we should take it," and that, "it's something we'll be looking at." DARPA moves ahead with electronic tags for soldiers

It may not be going so far as to chip every soldier with an implant, but it it looks like DARPA is now moving ahead with plans to give soldiers a slightly less invasive electronic tag. Apparently, the so-called Individual Force Protection System (or IFPS) will measure about three inches long, and it'll communicate with an array of vehicle-borne and portable receivers, which DARPA says will be able to pick up the tag's signal and pinpoint the soldier's location even in the most electronically-crowded battlefield. Motorola sues Apple over iPhone distribution
Bloomberg reports that Motorola is suing Apple for hiring a Motorola Exec who " disclosed its trade secrets to aid in the marketing of Apple's iPhone. " Could Motorola prowess help Apple's marketing?
``He was privy to the pricing, margins, customer initiatives, allocation of resources, product development, multi-year product, business and talent planning and strategies being used by Motorola,'' according to the complaint.

Sony Ericsson sees net profits fall 97%, looks to cut 2,000 jobs

Sony Ericsson warned the world just over a fortnight ago that things wouldn't be too rosy when it came time to announce Q2 results, and rosy things are not. Wii gets custom firmware, purported PSP emulator

It looks like there's been a couple of developments on the entirely unofficial Wii activities front in the past few days, including one that seemingly delivers as promised and one that remains a bit of a mystery. That former item comes courtesy of Waninkoko, who has released what is purported to be the "first custom firmware for the Wii," which apparently allows writable DVDs to be read in emulators. In related news, the folks from TeamShift have released that tantalizing image above of what they claim to be a working PSP emulator for the Wii although, given that it can only muster between 4 and 8 frames per second, "working" doesn't exactly mean "playable." A new page found on AT&T’s website suggests the company may finally be ready to begin offering free Wi-Fi access to iPhone users at its hotspots nationwide. AT&T's free iPhone WiFi is live at last

Apple component orders hint imminent MacBook upgrade
Looks like Apple is moving to accelerate its delayed laptop range upgrade, according to reports emanating all the way from Taiwan.
Seems the company has put out a major order for components for the new MacBooks, reportedly requesting 20 per cent more circuit boards for them than it requested in spring.
Compeq Manufacturing, Gold Circuit Electronics (GCE), Nanya Printed Circuit Board (NPC) and Tripod Technology are the four manufacturers Apple's claimed to have approached for the new boards.
Sure, this doesn't mean new models are definite, but we've expected them a while, and believe their introduction to have been delayed when Intel hit some last minute processor production problems with Centrino 2.

Enderle says iPhone 3G a 'beta' product
Analyst Rob Enderle of the Enderle Group is a frequent Apple critic, and his comments against the iPhone are perhaps good advice.
He's warning business users not to be too quick to adopt the iPhone 3G, warning that any flaws in the product may take time to surface.
Oh, but he's always good for a soundbite, check this from VNU:
"Apple is one of those companies that could sell refrigerators to Eskimos, but that does not suggest that Eskimos should actually buy them," he said. "The problem is that Apple tends to lead on hype and does a good job controlling initial product reviews."
Pretty true, but the business-friendly iPhone offers support for Exchange, Cisco VPN security and GPS - and word is many business users are tempted by the gadget.
Caution, advises Enderle, "It would be better for employees and their companies if purchases of the iPhone 3G

Seit Ende Juni ist bekannt, dass Apple in China an zwei Retail Stores baut. Der eine soll zu den Olympischen Spielen fertig sein, der andere eröffnet schon morgen am 19. Juli. This news is intended to be a small analysis of the new iPhone business model, and especially its relevance with the functions and opportunities opened by the recent release of Firmware 2.0. This is the result of discussions inside and outside Hardmac Editor Team, as well as with developers.
With the first version of the iPhone, Apple intended to first test the market, and get as much money back as possible from exclusive partnerships signed with 4 carriers AT&T, O2, Orange and T-Mobile. If one could agree that as a new comer Apple wanted to be careful (financially but also for its image), and offered the iPhone with bundled advanced wireless services supported by renowned carriers, with the new version supporting 3G such strategy should be revised. One can also imagine that Apple thought it could change the 12 years-old existing system and establish a new one more profitable for mobile designer/manufacturers; it failed.

Microsoft erzielt zweistelliges Umsatz- und Gewinnwachstum
Microsoft hat seinen Umsatz und Gewinn zum Ende des Geschäftsjahres 2007/08 deutlich gesteigert. Larrabee: No Support for DirectX!?
According to the last rumors from the web, Intel does not plan to support the Microsoft 3D API set, aka DirectX with Larrabee. If we do not know how the company will program this video chips to speed 3D rendering computing, it seems it will be different way than with this popular API set.
Of course, it would be excellent news for Mac users, as the main break for developing or porting games on Mac is the proprietary DirectX API set, which is not available for Mac OS X. In addition, pagesjaunes.fr does not plan to provide only its search engine, but wants to add a geolocalization tool to compete with Google; it should not be so difficult as they most likely have better maps of France than the Californian company, and offer it already for free via Mappy.fr on the web.

Samsung Announced SSD with Extended Lifetime
As the new revolutionary ferroelectric NAND flash memory chips will not arrive immediately, Samsung and Sun announced the future development of SLC chips-based SSD with extended lifetime. Radeon 3xxx Phasing Out

NPD: Wii usurps Xbox 360 as best selling US game console, pulling away

It's neck-and-neck but Nintendo looks to have just slipped past Microsoft in terms of total US sales for current generation game consoles. What's more, it's pulling away with a 3:1 sales lead for the month of June. NPD Group reports more than 666,000 Wii consoles were sold in June compared to 405,500 PlayStation 3s and 219,800 Xbox 360s. That makes for a total of 10.9 million Wiis sold in the US since it launched in November of 2006. Impressive. Even more so considering that Microsoft had a one year head-start to reach a second place position of about 10.4 million US console sales.
