Apple, Google, more agree to end anti-poaching deals

The Department of Justice today reached a settlement with several technology firms to end anti-poaching job deals between each other. Adobe, Apple, Google, Intel, Intuit and Pixar have agreed to end reportedly anti-competitive deals that prevented them from recruiting each other's staff. Companies will be required to allow "cold calls" and other active hiring attempts for at least five years and will have to institute "compliance measures" to make sure the ruling is enforced.

Orb MP-1 promises cheap wireless audio with iPhone as remote

Orb made its first venture into hardware today through its MP-1 wireless audio streaming hub. The small puck depends entirely on software on a computer and device to work and only has audio and power connectors. Any Mac or Windows PC running the Orb Caster app can share music from iTunes, Pandora or Sirius XM's Internet service over the Wi-Fi network with an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch using a special remote app.

FCC to address cellphone bill shock, CableCARD by October 14

The FCC late this week published an agenda (PDF) for its next open meeting that confirmed it will tackle high cellphone overage charges on October 14. Agency officials will discuss how to combat what it has called "bill shock," or roaming and heavy use charges that can range into the hundreds or thousands of dollars above the base rate. Extra fees have become an increasing problem as smartphones like the iPhone have added data fees to voice and text messaging costs.

Pioneer previews 3D Blu-ray players with iPhone, iPod apps

Pioneer at CEDIA this week showed a trio of Blu-ray players that add 3D support. The regular BDP-430 as well as the Elite-labeled BDP-41FD and BDP-43FD will all add 3D to their existing slate of features. Networking will still play an important role and should include both Netflix and YouTube streaming as well as remote control with Pioneer's iOS app for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Sony Ericsson says it has 'no plans' for any new Symbian products

Symbian has taken some pretty hard hits as of late, and it's just been dealt another big one -- Sony Ericsson has confirmed earlier talk that it is indeed abandoning the operating system. iTunes terms refer to missing Ping sidebar

The latest revision of terms for the iTunes Store may point to a missing feature, observers remark. "We have changed the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions to provide you notice that if you have opted in to the Ping social network and use the new Ping Sidebar," the text reads, "iTunes will send information to Apple about the content you select in your iTunes library in order to provide you with Ping personal recommendations." There is no identifiable sidebar for Ping, whether in iTunes 10 or iOS.

Microsoft tries to evade image with Mac vs. PC on Facebook

Microsoft took its anti-Mac marketing to social networking in the past day with a PC vs. Mac Facebook app on its Australian fan page. The app hopes to disrupt the stereotypes of Windows users created by Apple's ads by having visitors guess each other's computer choices and has them take quizzes to guess their "allegiances," though the questions don't have much association with computers. Confirmed: No FaceTime in the Middle East

We just got confirmation from the story earlier this week that FaceTime had gone missing in many parts of the world, including around the Middle East. @dutweets is the official Twitter account for du, the telecom operator for the iPhone in United Arab Emirates, and in a tweet just a little while ago, the account confirmed that FaceTime is currently unavailable in that country. Google contradicts itself on question of stock Android

Google chief Eric Schmidt in an interview posted today (video below) from from the Zeitgeist conference provided contradictory answers on why the company refuses to require an option for unaltered Android on smartphones. He insisted to Search Engine Land that the company couldn't make carriers or phone designers give the choice since it would be "violating the principle of open source." The principle demands that everyone have control, even if it means options being locked out for end users.

Since the iPad was first announced in January of this year, there's been speculation that a smaller form factor -- say, something between an iPad and an iPod touch -- would be added to the line. Microsoft: Windows Phone 7 actually doesn't support tethering

We're not exactly sure how this message got so confused, but Microsoft's come out today to let us know that Windows Phone 7 officially doesn't support tethering at all, despite earlier comments by Brandon Watson that it'd be a network operator call on whether to enable it. If we had to guess, this is probably a feature that was "on the bubble" as Microsoft moved toward RTM, and it simply didn't make the cut for version 1.0 -- we'd definitely expect to see it in a future release, though there's no guidance from Microsoft at the moment on whether (or when) that'll happen.

Target to carry iPad October 3 in push against Kindle

Target on Friday confirmed plans to sell the iPad in its stores. The retail chain will carry four models of Apple's tablet as of October 3 at pricing starting from the same $499 as Apple itself. Huawei breaks DSL speed barrier with 700Mbps prototype

DSL lines might not really be the sexiest thing in networking anymore, but what they are is ubiquitous, so let's not begrudge Huawei its feat here. The Chinese telecoms facilitator has shown off a new prototype that can pump 700Mbps of data across a 400-meter expanse. This is done by bundling four twisted pairs of copper wire together and sprinkling in some fairy dust to make them communicate at 175Mbps each. The clever bit here is in how crosstalk and interference are minimized, and Huawei claims a 75 percent improvement in bandwidth as a result. CDMA-iPhone für Anfang 2011 erwartet

Gerüchten zufolge möchte Apple im Dezember rund drei Millionen CDMA-iPhones produzieren und diese zu Beginn des Jahres 2011 auf den Markt bringen. CDMA ist ein Mobilfunkstandard, der vor allem in den USA verbreitet ist und beispielsweise von Verizon, dem grössten Mobilfunkanbieter der Vereinigten Staaten, verwendet wird. Bisher besass AT&T in den USA eine Exklusivpartnerschaft mit Apple, welche angeblich aber demnächst auslaufen wird. AT&T betreibt ein GSM-Netz und hätte deswegen keine Verwendung für ein CDMA-iPhone. Verizon selbst hofft vor allem darauf, dass Apple dem iPhone baldmöglichst Unterstützung für das 4G-LTE-Netz beibringt, welches Verizon derzeit aufbaut. Die USA zählt unterdessen zu den wenigen grossen Ländern, in dem Apple das iPhone nur über einen einzigen Mobilfunkprovider anbietet. Apple hat diese Woche neue Versionen der beliebten iWork-Programme für das iPad veröffentlicht. Die Liste der Neuerungen und Verbesserungen fällt in allen drei Apps ziemlich lang aus. Keynote 1.2 (Affiliate-Link) unterstützt unter anderem das Gruppieren von Objekten, bietet zahlreiche neue Animationen, lässt Präsentationen auf einer iDisk ablegen und bietet eine Exportmöglichkeit ins PowerPoint-Format. Pages 1.2 (Affiliate-Link) bietet Verbesserungen im Umgang mit Tabellen und Schriften. Erhält man per Mail ein Textdokument (.txt), lässt sich dieses nun direkt mit Pages öffnen und bearbeiten. Ausserdem unterstützt Pages 1.2 beim Im- und Export nun auch Fuss- und Endnoten sowie Inhaltsverzeichnisse. Numbers 1.2 (Affiliate-Link) liest CSV-Dokumente und bietet einen Export ins Excel-Format. Daneben nahm Apple an allen drei Apps zahlreiche Detailänderungen vor, welche die Bedienung vereinfachen und die Zuverlässigkeit verbessern sollen.

Awesome Solitaire is (surprise!) an awesome solitaire game. The usual card game is so simple by now that presentation is everything, and Awesome Solitaire has presentation in spades. If you play in Awesome mode, the graphics are flashy, you get rewarded with points for combos, and the animation looks smooth and professional. Heck, the background is even animated with the accelerometer. My one argument is that there's no sound on the app at all -- as flashy and smooth as the graphics are, you'd think there would be some sparkling sounds to accompany them. But then again, I often turn the sounds on my phone down (especially in public), so the lack of sound on a pick up and play game like this doesn't hurt too much. Samsung SGH-i916 taucht in Kanada neben einem iPhone 4 auf

Filed under: Smartphones Dieses Samsung Phone sieht genauso aus, wie das Samsung i917 mit Windows Phone 7 das man schon hier und da zu sehen bekommen hat, heisst aber seltsamerweise SGH-i916. Wahrscheinlich gibt es da einen klitzekleinen Unterschied zwischen den beiden, das i916 soll jedenfalls in Kanada bei Rogers rauskommen, wahrscheinlich sogar ohne Samsung-Branding. Eine weitere Gemeinsamkeit mit dem i917 scheint das AMOLED-Display zu sein, worauf wir wegen dem tiefen, satten Schwarz schliessen. Ein weiteres Bild des i916 gibt es nach dem Break.

Bald zwei Jahre Garantie auf neue Macs?

Die obligatorische Gewährleistungfrist für in der Schweiz verkaufte Konsumgüter soll auf zwei Jahre verlängert werden. Dies schlagen die Rechtskommissionen der eidgenössischen Räte in ihrem Entwurf zur Revision des Obligationenrechts vor, wie das Swiss IT Magazine schreibt. Vorgeschlagen wird eine Gewährleistungsfrist von zwei Jahren auf Neuprodukte und von einem Jahr auf Occasionsgeräte. Innerhalb dieser Frist müsste der Hersteller für nachträglich aufgetretene Mängel haften. Unter eine solche Regelung würden natürlich auch Computer fallen. Apple beispielsweise bietet bis anhin lediglich ein Jahr Garantie auf seine Produkte.

Qualcomm's Peanut challenges ZigBee, Bluetooth for control of your personal area network next year

Perhaps dissatisfied with the glacial pace of Wibree, Qualcomm's working on an ultra-low-power, short-range wireless transfer tech of its own -- it's called Peanut, and executives claim it only needs "fractions of a milliwatt of power" to push data at several megabits per second. HP bringt All-in-One-PCs TouchSmart 310 und Omni100, jedenfalls in den USA

Filed under: Rechner HP hat zwei neue All-in-One-PCs vorgestellt: Zum einen den TouchSmart 310 (im Bild oben) mit 2,8 GHz Athlon II 240e Dual Core Prozessor, 4 GB RAM, Radeon HD 4270 Grafikkarte, 1-TB-Festplatte, HDTV-Tuner und 20-Zoll-Touchscreen mit 1600 mal 1900 Pixeln. Das Teil läuft unter Windows 7 mit HPs Touchscreen-Oberfläche, die dann unter anderem spezielle Oberflächen für Facebook und Co. bietet. HTC Mozart zeigt Windows Phone 7 Features und ein paar Specs (mit Video)

NVIDIA CEO: Tegra 3 fast fertig, Tegra 4 bereits in der Mache

Filed under: Chipset Obwohl sich die gerade stattfindende GPU Technology Conference von NVIDIA vor allem um GPUs dreht, hat CEO Jen-Hsun Huang sich nicht gescheut, auch ein paar frische CPUs anzukündigen, mit denen niemand gerechnet hatte: neue Tegra Chips. Obwohl der Tegra 2 noch immer in keinem Seriengerät zu finden ist (aus der Boxee Box flog er wieder raus) sagte Huang, daß nicht nur der Tegra 3 fast fertig und der Tegra 4 bereits in der Entwicklung ist, sondern in Zukunft jährlich ein neuer Tegra erscheinen soll. Das sollen die Specs der Nintendo 3DS sein: Zwei ARM11-Prozessoren und 1,5 GB Flash-Speicher

Filed under: Nintendo 3DS Eine Woche vor dem Start in Japan, meint IGN schon ganz genau zu wissen, was im Nintendo 3DS arbeiten wird: Zwei mal 266MHz ARM11, 133 MHz GPU, 4 MB VRAM, 64 MB RAM und 1,5 GB Flash-Speicher, zu dem noch ein SD-Karten-Slot kommt. Zwei Prozessoren sind im diesem Fall durchaus nicht übertrieben, die Nintendo DS hat ja schon einen 67 MHz ARM9 und zusätzlich einen 33,5 MHz ARM7 als Subprozessor unter der Haube. Irgendwie hat sich diese Meldung letzte Woche an uns vorgeschlichen, aber die Clip-it USB Drives von Verbatim sind zu charmant, um sie links liegen zu lassen: Plastik-Büroklammern mit 2 oder 4 GB USB-Speicher, ohne weiteren Schnickschnack außer den Farben (gelb, grün, pink, blau, orange, schwarz und weiß). Photokina 2010: General Electrics PJ1 Projektor-Kamera

Filed under: Digitalkameras Die PJ1 ist nicht die erste Kamera mit einem Projektor, aber General Electrics GE-Marke für Kameras ist noch so neu für uns, dass wir sie uns einfach genauer ansehen mussten. Mit 14 Megapixeln, 7-fachem optischem Zoom und 720p Video eine eigentlich allzu typische Schnappschuss-Kamera die allerdings für den Projektor offensichtlich nicht all zu viel an Extrapreis verlangt. Für 250 Euro soll sie im Februar auf den Markt kommen. Leider ist der Projektor mit einer Auflösung von immerhin 845x480 wirklich nur in absolut dunklen Räumen zu gebrauchen und die 15 Lumen leuchten nicht gerade hell. Dafür allerdings ist sie sehr schlank geraten.

Netflix considering streaming-only service for US

Netflix chief Reed Hastings in an apology for remarks about American self-absorption hinted that the company might extend its Canadian streaming-only plans to the US. He wouldn't give details but said Netflix had been contemplating a rollout "over the coming months." The Motorola Droid 2 R2-D2 edition launch kit contains just a dummy unit, not an extremely well-put together little Droid, so you wont' find any lightspeed animation contained within. Pioneer previews its trio of 3D Blu-ray players at CEDIA

Not quite as good as an actual announcement, but at CEDIA Pioneer was previewing its BDP-430, BDP-43FD and BDP-41FD 3D Blu-ray players which are expected to cost the same or less than the current models at $299, $399 and $499. Flickr Find: iPad powering bike stereo

This is pretty cool -- it's a bike-mounted iPad-controlled stereo spotted at a meetup for a group of BMX riders recently. There's not a lot of information on how it was all put together (maybe if user Mikey Wally sees this he can tell us more in the comments below), but it looks like the iPad is secured with a handlebars mount, and then plugged into a speaker stuck on the front. AAPL rises to second-largest stock, surpassing PetroChina

Apple temporarily took the second position among the world's biggest companies, as gauged by market value. Motion sensor-equipped HiSAVER power strip cuts power when you leave the room

You probably wouldn't want to use it for all your electronics, but we're guessing that most folks could find a few uses for this new motion-sensor equipped HiSAVER power strip, which can automatically cut off power when you leave the room. To avoid too much powering on and off, the strip only shuts off power if it doesn't detect any motion for ten minutes, and it includes a master outlet and a second selectable outlet that can be kept on all the time if you like. Mitsubishi America offers up two new 3D projectors

The first new projector for the US is the HC4000 (pictured) which is touted as a great price for the performance DIY HT projector and features the 1080p DarkChip 3 DLP light engine. It is capable of 1300 lumens and provides up to 750:1 ANSI contrast ratio. It has support for an optional anamorphic lens for those 2.35:1 movies and is rated at a very quiet 25dBA in low mode. Ricoh outs ruggedized G700SE camera with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
