HTC director confirms Windows Phone 7 phones launching next month
It's unclear whether the dude was speaking out of turn, but an HTC regional director responsible for North Africa and the Middle East has gone on record with gulfnews saying on no uncertain terms that the company "will be launching Windows Phone 7 handsets next month." Of course, that lines up nicely with just about everything we've been hearing lately -- not to mention the torrent of HTC-specific leaks we've seen -- and if true, it gives Microsoft a pretty generous buffer ahead of its holiday 2010 guidance for the platform's commercial release. Spreadtrum technology enables three SIM cards in one phone, jetsetters rejoice
You know that dual-SIM handset you picked up last year to make those frequent jaunts between Belgium and Luxembourg so much easier? Might as well throw The Netherlands in there to complete the Benelux triangle, as Spreadtrum has just announced a new single chip that enables support for three SIM cards within a single handset. The SC6600L7 solution allows for a trio of SIMs to run simultaneously, and as you'd expect, it's aimed at the multiple-operator-market and at double agents who need on-the-fly access to a range of phone numbers. Quartalszahlen: Adobe steigert Gewinn um 69 Prozent
Adobe gab am heutigen Abend die Zahlen für das abgelaufene Quartal bekannt. They tell us what they like and what they don't like, and nothing could be more passionate than the recommendations for TeamViewer that appeared in the comments on a post I recently wrote about using iTeleport and LogMeIn to provide remote support. Android Gmail now stand-alone; iOS Google Earth gets oceans
Google on Tuesday updated two of its most important mobile apps, including a landmark change for Android. The company has now made Gmail a stand-alone app to give it new features without waiting for major updates to Android itself. The first update brings in early support for Priority Inbox through an "important" filter, lets users toggle quoted text and keeps important interface elements on the screen regardless of the length of the message.

Talks for Ping's Facebook support lasted over 18 months
Apple and Facebook were in discussions for 18 months or more before the launch of Ping, according to a source described as familiar with the talks. For a very brief time after the service's debut, Ping contained Facebook links, even though Apple did not have the necessary permission. Facebook subsequently blocked Ping, although Apple CEO Steve Jobs has claimed the links were omitted because of "onerous terms" being demanded.

Samsung Mobile Spain pegs Galaxy S update for late October
Samsung's indicated in the past that all versions of its ubiquitous Galaxy S would be getting Froyo upgrades in harmony (more or less) -- and it had also indicated that those updates would be happening in September. Delta, AA iPhone apps could be worth a million frequent flyer miles

Sprint's WiMAX service switches on early in San Francisco
A check today discovered that Sprint has quietly started active, publicly usable tests of its WiMAX-based 4G network in San Francisco. Those with devices like the HTC Evo 4G or Samsung Epic 4G have found that some parts of the city will flip over to the faster access. Quick testing by PCWorld saw the incomplete network reaching speeds of almost 3Mbps downstream and 1Mbps upstream.

Warner Bros. says Apple's TV rentals are too cheap
When Apple recently announced the availability of $0.99 rentals of TV episodes, not every network was on board with it. The Walt Disney Co. and News Corp. (parents of ABC and FOX, respectively) were good with the deal, though one of the most notable opponents was Warner Bros. (CW, among others). The reason: $0.99 for an episode rental is too cheap.
Chief Exec Barry Meyer of Warner Bros. went on to say that having rentals set at such a low price would hurt sales of full seasons of their television shows, adding that the current $2.99 to own an episode, via iTunes, suited them just fine.

NVIDIA to replace Fermi graphcis with Kepler in 2011
As part of its GPU Technology Conference, NVIDIA today provided a brief glimpse at its future graphics architecture, Kepler. The design will replace the Fermi core of today's GeForce 400 series and should calculate about five gigaflops of per watt, or more than three times the 1.5 gigaflops of Fermi hardware. Both the redesign as well as a shrink in the assembly process from 40 nanometers to 28 should reduce the need for extra cooling and power in notebooks and other hardware in tight spaces.

iPhone profits greatly exceed number of phones sold
Apple's share of cellphone industry profits is vastly disproportionate to the number of iPhones it actually sells, notes Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley. Apple sold approximately 17 million iPhones in the first half of 2010, as compared to the 400 million or so devices sold by Nokia, Samsung and LG combined. In spite of this, Apple took in 39 percent of industry profit, next to the 32 percent claimed by its three rivals. A mere 29 percent was claimed by all other companies.

Gameloft has announced that it has broken the 20 million download mark across all of its paid apps. That's a huge number, and it shows that the company has really latched on to the iPhone as a huge market for its mobile games. LaCie intros very color-accurate 24-inch LCD with IPS
LaCie today rolled out a very high-end desktop LCD for pro image editing. The 24-inch 324i uses a 1920x1200 P-IPS panel with 10-bit color per channel and consequently offers near-total coverage of the color ranges visual editors need. Google Earth updated for iPhone 4 retina display, includes ocean topography
Google Earth for iOS, which was already one of the biggest "wow" apps on the iPhone (It's the Earth in your pants!), has received a huge update that adds support for the iPhone 4's gorgeous retina display, as well as new ocean topographies that will allow users to explore the underwater depths.
You can see from the screenshot above that this adds an insane amount of detail to the textures and drawing space. Even this comically oversized screen grab can't convey how good this looks on a real iPhone 4, though. I highly suggest that you check it out for yourself.

Early third-generation Kindle software update improves web browser, provides new way to feel e-litist
What better way to read up on your Republic of Gilead lore (whether or not such country allows to read in the first place) than on a digital screen via firmware that's just a tinge futuristic. Amazon is offering an early preview of software update 3.0.2 for the latest generation of its Kindle reader. NVIDIA porting CUDA to run directly on x86 chips
NVIDIA chief Jen-Hsun Huang today at its GPU Technology Conference said his company would bring its CUDA general-purpose computing language directly to x86 chips. The approach developed with the Portland Group will let systems without NVIDIA cards handle the code. It will work best with multi-core processors and is seen as ideal for servers.

NVIDIA reveals Fermi's successor: Kepler at 28nm in 2011, Maxwell in 2013
Not a lot of details to be had, but NVIDIA wants you to know Fermi isn't the company's be-all, end-all GPU -- "hundreds of engineers" are already hard at work on Codename Kepler, expected to go to production this year and ship in 2011. Survey: 23% of iPhone users would switch to Verizon
It's something we've heard for years now. "If the Verizon offered the iPhone, there would be a mass exodus from AT&T." According to one survey, the exodus might not be so massive.
BusinessInsider reports on a survey conducted by Credit Suisse that asked an unspecified number of iPhone users who they would select as a carrier if they could abandon AT&T. Just 23% -- less than one quarter -- said they'd jump ship to Verizon. Additionally, another 3% would move over to Sprint while a whopping 2% would choose T-Mobile.

AT&T: iPhone non-exclusive no issue as 2/3rds already loyal
AT&T chief Randall Stephenson talked down the impending loss of iPhone exclusivity again today at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference in New York City. iPhone-connected blood glucose meter now closer to reality
TUAW received a tip this morning about something that could be immensely useful to the over 17.9 million people in the U.S., as well as millions in other countries, who have diabetes.
Pharmaceutical company Sanofi Aventis has announced the iBGStar Blood Glucose Meter that connects directly to the iPhone or iPod touch. While the hardware and official app that will accompany the meter is not yet released, the app is based on the free Wavesense Diabetes Manager app now in the App Store.
Sanofi Aventis is currently preparing the meter for submission to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and it is unlike the Johnson & Johnson concept displayed

Rumor: Apple/Rovi deal suggests Apple television
Earlier this week, it was reported that Apple and Rovi had signed a super-secret pact. The multi-year arrangement will reportedly let Apple make use of Rovi's technology, which includes interactive television programming guides. Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster suggested that the deal could mean live TV and DVR functionality for the new Apple TV. We've heard Sony use the term "Advanced Model" when dealing with concepts before, and it seems that it's using said code once more to disguise what may end up being the A77. Fujifilm X100 to reach US in March near $1,000

Modern meetings are a marvel. With strong competition in the remote presentation/conferencing product space, we now have plenty of capable and feature-rich platforms that offer affordable (sometimes free) remote meetings, most with a good Mac compatibility story to tell. The catch, of course, is that all these technologies depend on Java, Flash/AIR or a bespoke browser plugin to deliver the goods -- meaning that the iPad and iPhone are largely left out of the fun.

Office of Mac 2011 reaches volume license customers
Some individuals are already gaining access to Office for Mac 2011, accounts say. A copy of the work suite is said to have appeared on Microsoft's Volume License page overnight, allowing eligible customers to download a 972MB file labeled Office for Mac 2011 Standard. Gameloft vermeldet 20 Millionen verkaufte iOS-Spiele
Der Spielehersteller Gameloft scheint mit dem iPhone und dem iPad gute Geschäfte zu machen. Seit dem Start des App Stores im Sommer 2008 wurden 20 Millionen kostenpflichtige Gameloft-Spiele über iTunes heruntergeladen, mehr als die Hälfte davon in den letzten neun Monaten. Insgesamt hat Gameloft bereits hundert Spieltitel für die iOS-Plattform veröffentlicht, 25 davon erreichten die Nummer-eins-Position in den iTunes-Verkaufscharts. Alleine für das iPad bietet Gameloft bereits 29 Spiele an. Apple gets highest score ever in satisfaction, holds off PCs
Apple today managed to get its best-ever score on the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) and maintain its lead over Windows PCs. Happiness with Macs climbed from 84 points last year to an all-time high of 86 this year. Apple übernimmt Spezialisten für Gesichtserkennungssoftware
Wie schwedische Medien berichten, hat Apple die Firma Polar Rose mit Sitz in Malmö übernommen. Polar Rose hat sich auf die Entwicklung von Software zur automatischen Gesichtserkennung spezialisiert. Ähnliche Technologien setzt Apple beispielsweise in iPhoto bereits ein. Bisher haben sich beide Parteien allerdings nicht zur Übernahme geäussert und es ist unklar, welche Ziele Apple mit dem Kauf von Polar Rose verfolgt. Seagate trots out 1.5TB portable external drive with USB 3.0
Seagate this morning reached another record for storage with a 1.5TB version of the FreeAgent GoFlex Ultra-portable drive. The disk is the first 2.5-inch drive to reach the density and still claims a possible edge in speed. Gameloft verkauft über 20 Millionen Apps
Seitdem der App Store im Juli 2008 seine Pforten öffnete, hat Publisher und Entwickler Gameloft mittlerweile 20 Millionen bezahlter Apps über diesen Vertriebskanal verkauft.
Das teilte der Hersteller in einer Pressemitteilung mit. Allein 42 Titel aus dem Portfolio von Gameloft kletterten immer wieder unter die Top 5 der meistverkauften Spiele im App Store. 25

Panasonic GH2 upgrades MFT cams with 16MP sensor, 3D lens
Panasonic kicked off Photokina with the previously leaked Lumix GH2. It stands as the first Micro Four Thirds camera to get a truly upgraded MOS sensor and shoots at 16 megapixels with a wider sensitivity range of ISO 160 to 12,800 and a faster, 23-point autofocusing system. The sensor along with a new Venus Engine FHD processor also makes room for 5FPS burst shooting and 1080i video at 60 frames per second instead of 30.

Deutschlands vierter Apple Store eröffnet diesen Samstag in Oberhausen
Diesen Samstag wird Apple seinen vierten Retail Store in Deutschland eröffnen. Der neue Apple Store befindet sich im Einkaufszentrum CentrO in Oberhausen im Ruhrgebiet. Bereits seit rund sechs Monaten hatte Apple nach Mitarbeitern für den neuen Store gesucht. Oberhausen ist nach München, Frankfurt und Hamburg die vierte Stadt Deutschlands, in der Apple einen eigenen Retail Store betreibt.

Silicon carbide sensors developed for transmitting inside volcanos
There's one serious obstacle to volcano research: volcanos, like, shoot lava. Sure, you could aim a thermal camera at one from a safe distance, but where's the fun in that? Newton Never Dies: Newton OS läuft auf dem iPad
Alteingesessene Apple-Anwender mögen sich sicher noch an den Newton erinnern, Apples ersten PDA. Mitte der Neunzigerjahre wollte sich Apple mit dem Newton ein zweites Standbein neben dem Mac-Geschäft aufbauen. Doch der Newton scheiterte auf dem Markt und wurde 1998 von Steve Jobs nach seiner Rückkehr zu Apple eingestellt. Schon vor einigen Jahren wurde von unabhängigen Entwicklern ein Projekt namens Einstein ins Leben gerufen, um das Newton OS auf aktueller Hardware zum Laufen zu bringen. Nun scheint es gelungen zu sein, das Newton OS auf einem iPad zu emulieren. Der Entwickler Steven Frank hat ein Video veröffentlicht, welches die Handschrifterkennung der Newton-Software auf einem iPad zeigt. Dass es der Newton-Emulator jemals in den App Store schafft, erscheint derzeit unwahrscheinlich, das Projekt soll aber trotzdem weitergeführt werden. Gameloft has announced that it has now exceeded 20 million paid games on the the iTunes App Store since it opened in July 2008. Adobe hat neue Versionen seiner beliebten Heimanwenderprogramme Photoshop Elements und Premiere Elements veröffentlicht. Die Videoschnittsoftware Premiere Elements ist damit erstmals auch für Mac OS X erhältlich. Photoshop Elements 9 übernimmt zahlreiche intelligente Bearbeitungswerkzeuge aus Photoshop CS5. Neue Schritt-für-Schritt-Anleitungen sollen den Einstieg in die Bildbearbeitung noch einfacher gestalten. Premiere Elements 9 ist richtet sich ebenfalls an Heimanwender. AAPL erreicht neues Allzeithoch
Apples Wertpapier AAPL hat am gestrigen Handelstag an der New Yorker Technologiebörse NASDAQ ein neues Allzeithoch aufgestellt. Der Kurs stieg am gestrigen Tag um 7.86 US-Dollar bzw. 2.85 Prozent auf 283.23 US-Dollar. Kurz vor Handelsschluss stand der Kurs gar bei 283.78 Punkten. Das bisherige Allzeithoch wurde mit knapp 280 US-Dollar im Juni dieses Jahres aufgestellt. Noch vor einem Jahr lag der Kurs nach zwei-maligen Einbrüchen bei 180.70 US-Dollar. Apples aktuelle Marktkapitalisierung liegt damit bei 258.75 Milliarden US-Dollar — 38.6 Milliarden US-Dollar höher als jene von Microsoft und 1.6 mal so hoch wie jene von Google.

Nintendo loses sales chief in face of iPod effect
Nintendo today said its executive VP of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway was leaving the company in a possible sign of a shakeup following its struggling game business and competition with Apple. PS3 firmware 3.50 is a go, 3D Blu-ray movies suddenly feel more wanted
Right on schedule -- or a day early, depending on your time zone -- Sony has unleashed version 3.50 of its PlayStation 3 firmware. And as previously promised, it's got 3D Blu-ray movie playback with it. And that's about it for this update, at least as far as we can tell so far. 23% of iPhone owners want Verizon as AT&T exclusivity ends
Approximately 23 percent of current iPhone owners in the US want to switch to Verizon when the opportunity arises, according to a survey conducted by Credit Suisse. The majority of subscribers intend to stick with AT&T, while a small fraction would rather sign contracts with Sprint or T-Mobile.

Insignia's Infocast gains a web browser, a little dignity in the process
Nah, it's not an officially supported browser, but it's a browser nonetheless. Zune Marketplace expands beyond US ahead of Windows Phone 7
Microsoft tonight expanded its Zune Marketplace services beyond the US for the first time in the run-up to Windows Phone 7. Its unlimited Zune Pass music, MP3 downloads, video sales and movie rentals will be available in France, Germany and the UK later this fall. Spain will get all but video sales, while Australia, Canada and New Zealand will get both of the video services but no music.

Blind user explains why he loves the iPhone
Here's a wild little story that made its way around the blogonets this past weekend -- it was originally posted in June, but it got recirculated on Twitter, and we first heard it from Steve Troughton-Smith. Austin Seraphin is a blind person, and he says that getting an iPhone changed his life forever -- he considers Apple's iDevice to be "the greatest thing to happen to the blind for a very long time, possibly ever." Really high praise, especially considering that we've heard both good and bad about the iPhone in terms of accessibility.

You know what really bugs us about this Samsung Galaxy S Femme handset? No, it's not that it once again trudges out the tired cliché that women must love pink -- it's that it presumes gents can't appreciate the benefits of Aveda's Damage Remedy and Hand Relief creams. We totally can! And we'd love to spend some quality time with the Aveda advisor app, which comes bundled on a 4GB MicroSD card, letting it identify for us the particular products we need to buy to keep our skin and hair looking their best. Foursquare app gets a version bump
Being the geek that I am, I always have time to annoy my wife by checking into venues with Foursquare whenever we go somewhere. The free location-based social networking iPhone app gained even more awesomeness (their description, not mine) today with the release of version 2.0.
What's new? A to-do list for organizing your explorations. You can search for a location, and then add it to your to-do list. This would be handy for reminding yourself about restaurants that friends have tipped you off to. To-dos can also be added via websites, if they embed the button on their page (think Instapaper for location-based to-dos).

HTC Lexikon shows up in leaked ROM update: is it the Merge for Verizon?
You might remember some discussion of the Lexikon about this time last month, a rumored Android piece from HTC sporting an 800MHz MSM7630 core, a 5 megapixel camera, 3.8-inch WVGA display, 4GB of onboard storage, Froyo with Sense, and a QWERTY keyboard. FaceTime goes missing in Saudi Arabia, much of Middle East
Looking forward to that new iPhone 4 in Saudi Arabia, Qatar or Yemen? If the preview pages on the various international editions of Apple.com are any guide, you may be missing a key new feature. Microsoft expanding Zune internationally, Zune Pass coming to to UK, France, Italy, and Spain
It's been years of waiting, but Microsoft is finally expanding the Zune service internationally -- a move that precedes the big Windows Phone 7 launch. Version 4.7 of the Zune software will be the desktop sync client for WP7 devices, and as such it'll be available in more than 20 countries. Verizon sets up teaser page for 4G service
How would you like a "full-tilt" wireless experience? Sound good? That's what Verizon's touting (among other things) at a teaser page it has launched for its upcoming LTE-based network but in terms of cold, hard facts, you shouldn't expect much. Dates, launch markets, and hardware all remain a bit of a mystery, but they're happy to take down your email address in exchange for a promise that you'll get the news just as soon as they're ready to lay it out there. We're tucked away in Leica's high-brow design preview event here in Köln, and while it appears that the vast majority of those in attendance showed just to boast about their suit, we're strictly here for the gear. That being said, let us be the first to formally introduce you to the now-official D-Lux 5 rangefinder. Or, sort of official D-Lux 5.
