Olympus E-5 leaks point to September 15th launch, familiar design
We've already heard a few rumors about Olympus's supposed E-3 successor, the E-5, and the folks at 4/3 Rumors have now turned up another pair of leaks ahead of the DSLR's expected launch later this month. That includes a teaser that seemingly confirms that the camera will be announced on September 15th (just a day off the earlier rumor), and what appears to be the first image of the camera itself -- or a tiny corner of it, anyway. Those both suggest that the camera will sport a strikingly similar design to the E-3 it's replacing (something backed up by

Psystar is dead. Long live Quo Computer
While we all know the story of Psystar, the company the company that crashed and burned by loudly selling non-Apple Macintosh computers with OS X installed, a much quieter and more polite company named Quo Computer seems to be doing just fine. Their mission is to get computers that can run the Macintosh OS into as many hands as possible and they go about it in a much more reasonable way.
Although their PR waxes eloquently about the virtues of using a Mac, Quo creates computers that can run any operating system be it Linux, Windows, Mac OS X or any combination of the three. TUAW review: EpicWin for iPhone
As a gamer and productivity fetishist, I've been anticipating EpicWin for iPhone since we first saw the app's trailer. It aims to enhance the drudgery of a to-do list with elements of a fantasy roll playing game like World of Warcraft, thereby adding a bit of fun to your daily tasks. I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and, while it's fun in a I'm-gaming-while-I-should-be-working way, EpicWin feels unfinished. iTunes now costing Apple over $900M a year to operate?
The iTunes Store is costing Apple at least $900 million a year to run, an estimate from asymco suggests. Based on factors like average prices, an app margin of 30 percent and a consensus-based music margin of 10 percent, Apple is presently believed to be budgeting about $75 million a month towards operational expenses. The number may be higher still if taking into account book and video transactions.

Google Walking Navigation beta and Street View now available for Android
Man, we're starting to think Google should just host an I/O event every month. As the search giant continues to roll out new innovations, today's introduction involves none other than Android. Starting today, folks with Android phones using version 1.6 or greater have a pair of must-downloads to tackle: Walking Navigation (Beta) and Street View smart navigation. The former is bundled into Google Maps for Mobile 4.5, offering pedestrians a more robust routing option when using their own two feet to maneuver from place to place.

Debunk: Bing not replacing Google on all Verizon Android devices
There's a rumor going around today that Verizon is stripping Google services out of its Android devices going forward in favor of their Bing equivalents (much the same way that AT&T has gone with Yahoo on some phones), but the company says this afternoon that it's simply false:
"that is not true. We have a relationship with Microsoft and Bing is the search engine on our multi-media phones but we have never said it would be exclusive on all of our devices."

Pentax intros RZ10, customizable RS1000 cameras
Pentax has announced two new 14 megapixel cameras will be added to its compact digital line, the RS1000 and RZ10. Like the K-x lineup, the new models let the camera body reflect the user's personality. Apple Newton to be reborn as iPhone case
Isn't it nice when siblings get along? Here's an idea for using a dead, hollowed-out Newton Message Pad as an Phone case. Case hacker Charles Mangin has had success with other projects, like the Mac Plus G4, the Mac mini stuffed into an Apple Disk II floppy drive and the iNewt. Microsoft says Bing on Verizon Android not exclusive
Microsoft today partly confirmed and downplayed its deal for Bing on Verizon's Android phones. It told SAI that there would be multiple Android phones on the carrier that would use Bing by default, but that the deal was "not exclusive" and that some of them would still use Google as a matter of course. Case study: Griping about signal quality can produce results
For most iPhone owners, it seems like AT&T is deaf to our complaints about signal quality. It appears, however, that griping loudly and repeatedly to the company does have an effect.
I live in the suburbs south of Denver and my signal quality is pretty good. However, whenever my wife and I have gone to Colorado Rockies baseball games in the last few years (we're season ticket holders), we've had awful service at the ballpark. FanVision handheld makes NFL nosebleeds far more bearable

Found Footage: Project 2000 from 1988 on the direction of computing

Acer Liquid Metal wraps Android 2.2 in aluminum
Well, this one's come a bit out of left field (or Russia, actually), but it looks like Acer may be set to release yet another Android device. Apparently dubbed the Liquid Metal, this one is said to pack Android 2.2 beneath Acer's own skin, along with a 3.6-inch 800 x 480 capactive touchscreen, an 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7230-1 processor, Bluetooth 3.0, and a camera of unspecified megapixels with a flash -- all wrapped in what appears to be an aluminum casing. Intel: Google TV due this month, can co-exist with Apple TV
Intel chief Paul Otellini in an interview today [sub. required] confirmed that the first Google TV devices should start shipping in September. With AirPlay, Apple opens iTunes software to a 3rd party
Engadget reports that Apple has opened its AirPlay technology to a third party, BridgeCo. BridgeCo is the maker of JukeBlox, a network streaming technology that's embedded into its partners' audio products and equipment to allow wireless audio streaming. ECTunes adds sound to silent EVs, but only where and when you need it (video)
The debate rages on about the sound, or rather the lack of sound, coming from electric vehicles. Their relative quietude could make roadside-housing rather more tenable in the future, but, if you ask some people, will turn those cars into silent killers. Parallels confirms Desktop 6 for Mac on Sept. 14th
Parallels has confirmed earlier leaks and formally announced Desktop 6 for Mac, which will officially go on sale September 14th. The developer claims over 80 new features and enhancements in the virtualization software; the focus is on improved speed however, mainly by way of a switch to a completely 64-bit engine. Windows apps should on average run about 41 percent faster, Parallels says.

Panasonic's iPhone-powered augmented reality T-shirt

Verizon betraying Android principles by mandating Bing?
Verizon's decision to force the use of Bing as the core search engine on the Samsung Fascinate may be part of a larger change that could undermine Android itself, a rumor hinted today. Two sources for Droid Guy, at least one of them previously accurate, claimed that Verizon is making Microsoft's Bing the mandatory engine on all of its Android phones in the future. Minimal Gmail is my new favorite Safari extension. It allows you to "clean up" a lot of the GMail interface, including turning off several items that you can't disable any other way.
Yes, that means that you can disable ads, although to be honest I really haven't noticed the ads in Gmail for a long time. However, now that they are gone, it is nice to have that space for reading the message, especially if you are on a smaller screen. The newly public App Store Review Guidelines are providing extra insight into why certain apps have been rejected. The introduction of the document illustrates several themes present in the formal rules below. Parallels Desktop 6 coming September 13, with better 3D support and Windows/Mac integration
Parallels, Inc. has taken the wrappings off of its new desktop virtualization software (yes, the same app which was already spotted on some store shelves -- looks like a few retailers jumped the gun), and provided TUAW with a look. The update adds over 80 new and enhanced features, with better support for 3D apps and games, an enhanced Transporter program that will connect Windows and Mac files to both implementations. Also, integration between the two OSes has been improved to include the ability to use Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts, Spotlight, and Parental Controls across both Mac and Windows on the same computer.

Pentax K-r brings higher sensitivity, speed to entry DSLRs
Pentax on Thursday brought out an upgrade to its least expensive DSLR. The K-r directly tackles some of the issues with the earlier K-x and focuses on image performance first: it now shoots at up to ISO 25,600 (up from 12,800) and at up to 6FPS for 25 shots in continuous mode (up from 4.7). High dynamic range shooting is better with a new night-focused mode, and the shutter speed has climbed to 1/6000th of a second.

Apple's App Store Review Guidelines: Some juicy bits
We've been busily going through the App Store Review Guidelines that Apple released to developers this morning, and we're surprised (and happy) to find direct, blunt language which makes Apple's requirements crystal clear. Here are a few gems.
Line 8 is a standout: "We have over 250,000 apps in the App Store. We don't need any more Fart apps. If your app doesn't do something useful or provide some form of lasting entertainment, it may not be accepted."
From line 9: "If your App looks like it was cobbled together in a few days, or you're trying to get your first practice App into the store to impress your friends, please brace yourself for rejection. We have lots of serious developers who don't want their quality Apps to be surrounded by amateur hour." You'll remember Steve also said

Sixth-gen Nano teardown shows tight assembly
Repair firm iFixit has conducted a teardown of the new iPod nano, which jettisons a clickwheel in favor a 1.54-inch touchscreen. The company describes the player as "more like a Shuffle with a screen than a Nano with multi-touch," in part because the Nano's case design is similar to that of the Shuffle. The touchscreen is in fact said to be inferior those of other iOS devices, as it supports only two fingers, and barely has space for one.

No matter what size iPad or other portable device you get, many times it seems that you're going to hit that storage limit and find yourself aching for more space. The HyperDrive may not fix that problem for you, but it may be handy in certain circumstances.
Using the portable HyperDrive and the iPad Camera Connection Kit, one can transfer movies and photos onto the iPad from either the HyperDrive's internal storage or via memory cards attached to it. Since the iPad only allows attached storage of 32GB or less, the HyperDrive sections off its on-board storage into 32GB "folders," each of which is viewable using the iPad Photos application.

Apple loosens reigns, allows 3rd party iOS dev tools with caveat
Here's a surprise we didn't expect this morning -- or ever, for that matter -- Apple has changed its stance on iOS app development, now allowing all tools "as long as the resulting apps do not download any code." Theoretically, this would include Adobe Flash CS5 but certainly includes tools like Unity. [Note that while the Flash CS5 authoring environment may be kosher, this rule still excludes the Flash browser plugin due to the no-downloaded-code clause. -Ed.]
In addition, Apple has published the App Store Review Guidelines for the very first time. We'll be anxious to hear what developers have to say after giving those guidelines a good read.

Wie AppleInsider berichtet, hat Apple heute zum ersten Mal überhaupt in der Geschichte des App Stores die «App Store Review Guidelines» im iOS Dev Center publiziert. VLC coming to the iPad
VLC, the play-anything video player for the Mac, may soon be available as an iPad app. App maker Applidium has spent months porting the open source player into an iPad app and has submitted it to the App Store. Hacker finden in iOS 4.1 Bootrom-Fehler für Jailbreak
Wie Geek über einen Hacker-Tweet erfahren hat, wurde einen Fehler im Bootrom entdeckt, über den theoretisch ein Jailbreak durchgeführt werden kann. ARM stellt Cortex-A15 MPCore vor

iMovie 1.1 für das iPhone und den iPod touch erschienen
Seit diesem Sommer kann man mit dem iPhone nicht mehr nur Videos aufzeichnen, sondern diese auch direkt auf Apples Mobiltelefon bearbeiten und schneiden. Möglich macht dies eine eigens für das iOS angepasste Fassung von iMovie. Mit der nun erschienenen Version 1.1 unterstützt iMovie neu auch den neuen iPod touch. iMovie 1.1 enthält überdies diverse kleinere Verbesserungen. Neuer iPod touch: technische Details, Auspackbilder, erste Reviews
Rund eine Woche nach der Einführung der neuen iPods haben die ersten Exemplare ihren Weg in die Hände der Kunden gefunden. Eine umfangreiche Sammlung an Auspackbildern (des iPod touch und iPod nano) findet sich im flickr-Stream von iLounge. ifixit.com hat eines der Geräte in seine Einzelteile zerlegt und einen Blick auf die Komponenten geworfen. Entgegen ersten Berichten verfügt auch der neue iPod touch trotz Face-Time-Unterstützung über keinen Vibrationsalarm, einen entsprechenden Motor hat Apple nicht verbaut. Die vorderseitige Kamera entspricht exakt derjenigen im iPhone, während dem die Kamera auf der Rückseite aus Gründen der Baugrösse qualitativ bei weitem nicht mit ihrem iPhone-Pendant mithalten kann und auch nur einen Fixfokus besitzt. Ein weiterer Punkt, bei dem der iPod touch hinter dem iPhone her hinkt, ist die verbaute Speichermenge. Apple stattet den iPod touch offenbar wie das iPad mit 256 Megabyte Arbeitsspeicher aus, das iPhone 4 besitzt hingegen 512 Megabyte Speicher.

iPod nano 4's firmware shows TV out, leftover video support
In spite of dropping video support from the new iPod nano, a new exploration of the shipping firmware hints that Apple has photo slideshows and has left code for video support inside. Checks by TUAW show code for TV out for photos as well as captions, subtitles and other features that would normally be needed only for video. The movie code is most likely material that wasn't pulled during development, as the screen would be too small for native video, although it leaves the possibility open.

HDR photo hands-on with iPhone 4 and iOS 4.1
I've never used one of the HDR apps, so I was eager to try out this new feature using iOS 4.1 on my iPhone 4.
Launching the camera now gives you an HDR option at the top of your screen. It's automatically set to off. When you toggle the option on, it will automatically switch the camera flash to off.
Using HDR will provide you with two shots -- one normal shot and one with HDR utilized. For my test subjects I used:
A shot of a window from a few feet away.
A shot of a window standing at the window.
A dark shot using the cat lounging next to the iMac as a model
A well-lit shot using one of the other cats, who happened to claim a kitchen cabinet as his own,

Eye-Fi starting up a developer program, will have some APIs open for business this fall
Pardon us as we coin the term "apportunity" to describe the upcoming developer program Eye-Fi has just announced. Developers will able to tie their apps / applications / sites into Eye-Fi features and services through the web, including accessing an Eye-Fi card for photos and video, changing settings on the card, and uploading to online sharing sites through Eye-Fi channels instead of directly connecting to each site. It all sounds very promising in a niche, people-who-use-WiFi-SD-cards sort of way, and we look forward to the results as Eye-Fi starts giving out API keys in phases, beginning this fall.

Boxee switches to WebKit for HTML5 support
Boxee tonight revealed that it's dropping the Firefox-based browser in the Boxee Box and desktop apps will switch to the Apple-made but open WebKit engine instead. Lead Apps Developer Rob Spectre told NewTeeVee that Boxee wanted to guarantee HTML5 support. Firefox's Gecko engine has rudimentary HTML5 support, but it doesn't work well within the Boxee client.
