HDR-Funktion bald auch für das iPhone 3GS?

Chromium OS-loaded iPad shown on video
In a follow-up to yesterday's report, the Hexxeh blog was updated with a video of an iPad running on Chromium OS. Now affectionately called the Chromepad, the video (embedded below) shows the modified device's interface shows a mouse cursor, giving more credibility to the claim.

Confirmed: Apple TV can play 1080p content from iTunes, but still only outputs 720p
The header says it all folks. We just ran some tests on the AppleTV's playback limits by streaming 1080p movie trailers in iTunes and managed to verify murmurs saying the device can accept 1080p content. Unfortunately, output is a different story, since it downscales the image back to 720p on your display. Yes it's a little frustrating -- especially since it's predecessor was up to the challenge via a Broadcom mod -- but it should at least comfort those with a massive library of 1080p videos who were worried about reconverting for their new black box. Briefly: Camera Duo released, DSLR Camera Remote updated
A new camera app has been released by Jambasoft, sporting options for capturing photos and video simultaneously on compatible iPhones. Camera Duo uses two different photo capture modes: Real Photos and Extract from Video. The former grabs an image in the middle of video recording, while the latter allows people to pull frames from a saved clip. Other features include tap-to-focus and support for both iPhone 4 cameras. Apple closes Beijing store temporarily to thwart iPhone 4 resellers
Despite the iPhone's official release in China, a grey market continues to thrive. So much so that shoppers are buying units from Apple for private resale in such large quantity, that Apple had to temporarily down the Beijing Apple Store.
According to M.I.C Gadget, the trouble started when Apple lifted the 2-per-customer restriction at the Beijing store. People were buying up to 30 iPhones at a time, which they would privately resell for a profit. In fact, many were selling right outside the store. Leak backs Windows Phone 7's Oct. 11 unveil, Nov. 8 release
Many of the launch details surrounding Windows Phone 7 were supported this afternoon through a leak. Citing only "people familiar with the matter," the WSJ said both the October 11 unveiling in New York City and a subsequent November 8 launch were accurate. Despite talk of T-Mobile devices, only AT&T would have WP7 models at first, the sources said.

HP names Léo Apotheker as new CEO and President
HP has just named its new CEO and President, former CEO of SAP, Léo Apotheker. Mr. Apotheker, who was with SAP for over 20 years, will also join HP's Board of Directors. His elections are to take effect November 1st. The decision has been expected since Mark Hurd's dramatic exit in August, though Mr. Apotheker's name was not one widely circulated as being in the running. Full press release is below.

French carriers negiotiating for subsidized iPad 3Gs?
French cellular providers could soon carry cheaper, subsidized iPad 3Gs, according to local financial paper Les Echos. The businesses are reportedly in negotiations with Apple, with the aim of launching iPads on contract by the end of the year. Rumor: Final Cut Studio update delayed until 2011
Those waiting on an update to Final Cut Studio may have to continue to do so, as a new rumor suggests it won't be released this year. Quoting a "source," Hardmac reports that the development of the next major update to Final Cut Studio has suffered "significant setbacks" and won't be available until 2011.
Hardmac notes that the scope of the project has been reduced as well, and the unified interface is a casualty of that reduction. The source says that differences between the team responsible for Shake and the team working on Motion are partly responsible, and representative of the overall difficulty in uniting all of the suite's applications.

Apple squeezing Samsung AMOLEDs, forcing switch to LCDs?
A tentative rumor today asserts that Apple has been buying Samsung's AMOLED display supply in a move that would trigger a part switch for Samsung's own phones. Well-known Russian leaker Eldar Murtazin claimed that Apple had bought virtually all of Samsung's Super AMOLED stock for 2011, leaving it with no choice but to switch to LCD for the Galaxy S and Wave. iOS development: More lucrative than expected
Open-First recently conducted a survey of 110 App Store developers to examine how much they've been earning vs. their initial expectations. Nearly half of respondents -- 48% -- revealed that they're earning more than the expected.
The study was conducted between August 30th and September 10th, 2010 via online questionnaire, followed-up by phone. In the end, 78% of respondents rated themselves as satisfied, very satisfied, or somewhat satisfied with the experience of publishing to the App Store, and 99% said they'd continue to do so.
Of course, not all developers surveyed were happy. A full 28% said they're making less than expected. Still, they must be hopeful, as nearly 100% of participants said they'd continue to

Sirius XM unveils $60 XM Snap, brings sat radio to any FM-capable car stereo
It looks an awful lot like the XM SkyDock that launched right around this time last year, but a SkyDock it's not. Android apps caught sending GPS, phone numbers to ad firms
A new joint study from Duke University, Intel Labs and Penn State University has found that some Android apps are sending excessive and potentially dangerous levels of location and personal info to ad producers. Of 30 free, successful apps, about half were sending advertisers the user's GPS positioning and even phone numbers beyond what they were known to do. The updates would occur even when no ads were running, Ars Technica noted, and could occur as often as every 30 seconds.

Change in sales policy shuts down Beijing Apple Store
Apple's flagship Beijing store was temporarily shut down on Wednesday in the wake of a change in sales policy, a report notes. Like most Apple Stores, the outlet normally restricts iPhone sales to two per person. How to kill that Ping drop-down in iTunes 10
Apple recently updated iTunes to version 10.0.1 which, among other things, added drop-down access to Ping, Apple's social network for iTunes customers, into your library. Some of you like Ping more than others, and there are those in the latter group who are completely disinterested.
The Mac Observer explains how you can eliminate that drop-down menu from iTunes 10 entirely. The procedure is simple. First, quit iTunes, launch Terminal and enter the following:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown -bool TRUE
Finally, quit Terminal and re-launch iTunes. Presto! The drop-down is

Jahrestag der Wiedervereinigung stattfinden. Die Handlung ist an der ehemaligen innerdeutschen Grenze im Jahr 1976 angesiedelt. Nation rejoices as Consumer Reports fixes crashing iPhone app
It took about a month but now you can fearlessly click on some of the news headings in the free Consumer Reports app and not have it crash.
A couple of weeks ago we reported that the app was unstable after an iOS 4 update. As weeks went by, the app was not updated and had more crashes and explosions than an old Bruce Willis movie. We gave the app a 'not recommended' and felt CR could do better than offer a highly defective piece of software.
Now they've finally done it. The app no longer collapses when you select 'electronics', although CR says it has eliminated, for now, its Gas Prices info. Hey, I like Consumer Reports, and am even a subscriber. I find the reviews

Some folks may have long forgotten about the issue by now, but anyone that was hit by those defective NVIDIA GPUs a couple of years back will likely want to take notice -- the company has finally reached a settlement in the class action lawsuit spurred on by the issue, and anyone with an affected Apple, Dell or HP laptop is eligible for some form of compensation. In the case of Apple and Dell laptops, that includes a replacement of the GPU or MCP, while users of an affected HP laptop will actually get a full replacement laptop "similar in kind and value." Ein Humvee ist normalerweise wenigstens etwas gegen Angriffe gesichert, aber so ein fliegendes Monster wie der mit immerhin 3 Millionen von der DARPA unterstützte Transformer-Humvee von AII Corp muss natürlich auf jedes Gramm achten, wenn er dafür wenigstens den einfachsten Angriffen entkommen will. Offensichtliche Ziele für RPGs sind sie natürlich sowieso. Aber es können ja nicht immer die schwarzen Helikopter sein. Wir haben das Gefühl, allein das klingelnde Wort Transformer reicht der DARPA heutzutage immer noch für absurde Projekte.

Study shows iPhone interest dropping, Android drawing even
About as many smartphone buyers want an Android device as do iPhones, according to the latest unofficial ChangeWave metric. Plans to get an iPhone have cooled off after the iPhone 4 high in June, and in September about 38 percent wanted Apple's handset, down from exactly half three months earlier. PlayOn TV for iPhone finally approved

Wer ist der schnellste Browser in Android-Land

Auf Android hat man ja die Qual der Wahl wenn es um die Browser geht die man nutzen will, andere Smartphones haben es da nicht so einfach. Aber jenseits vom rein subjektiven Eindruck, welcher Browser bringt wirklich mehr als der Standard? Die Übersicht sagt eigentlich schon alles. Skyfire 2.0 bläst alles weg, Opera Mini ist zumindest bei gesicherten Seiten noch knapp vor der Froyo Standard-Version. Und, genaugenommen löhnt sich der Rest kaum noch, jedenfalls nicht wenn es um Geschwindigkeit geht. Fennec muss im Beta dann noch beweisen, dass da einiges mehr geht als bislang.

Verizon 4G may have hit 28Mbps in unofficial speed test
A member of a private beta test today posted speed test results through a friend that reportedly shows real 4G speeds on the carrier's near-complete LTE network. Using what's described as a 10-inch square Thomson TG789vn router linked by Ethernet to an external dome receiver, the Edinboro, Pennsylvania-based tester at the BBR forums recorded speeds of nearly 28Mbps for downloads and 5Mbps upstream. While possible with FiOS, the relatively high latency at or near 150ms is more indicative of wireless but better than a usual satellite.

It should be possible to hack the Apple TV like any other iOS device, users note. When connected to a computer via a micro USB cable, the device registers in iTunes. iRobot patents "Celestial Navigation System" for the Roomba
While Roomba's automated approach to floor cleaning might've been novel for its day, its random bumbling is starting to look dated, particularly in comparison to laser-guided, ultra smart vacuums like the Neato XV-11. Well, iRobot is naturally not going to take this lying down, and the company has received a patent for a new "Celestial Navigation System" based on IR beacons bounced off walls and ceilings that the Roomba can track and calculate its position from. Taiwanese iPhone 4 buyers upset over case program
People in Taiwan are upset over Apple's treatment of iPhone 4 buyers, says the China Post. In response to complaints about the device's reception problems, the company began issuing free cases to people willing to download a free app. The problem in Taiwan, says local politician Kao Chia-yu, is that Apple's system is rejecting any e-mail sent from or addressed to the region.

Estimates show netbooks stagnating post-iPad
A new DisplaySearch study today both confirmed and predicted that the iPad was having a cooling effect on netbooks. Breaking down netbooks by category, it showed the 10-inch netbook's sales having dropped this spring by eight percent year-over-year after more than two years of growth. In small netbooks, below nine inches, the effect was even more dramatic as the category plummeted 89 percent to account for just 100,000 PCs worldwide.

Being the huge Batman fan that I am, I couldn't pass this one up. What you see above is an actual Batman-style utility belt called the TDK Utility Pouch, modeled after the one worn in the last Batman movie. But instead of compartments for gas canisters, audio bugs, or batarangs, this belt has a large pouch built specially for holding a cell phone exactly like the iPhone. QNAP has refreshed its NMP-1000 with the new NMP-1000P adding 1080p support to its networked multimedia player. While there is little to cosmetically distinguish between the two models, the NMP-1000P has significantly upgraded internals and an improved user interface. You may already know all about Weather HD -- the app made a nice splash when it was released early in the iPad's life. But Vimov has just released it for the iPhone, and even on the smaller screen, it leaves quite an impression. Umfrage: App-Entwickler setzen langfristig auf Android
Nach einer Umfrage sehen App-Entwickler bei Android mehr Potenzial als bei anderen Smartphone-Systemen. Befragt wurden knapp 2.400 App-Entwickler, von denen knapp 60 Prozent angaben, sie sähen Android als Betriebssystem der Zukunft – nur 35 Prozent nannten iOS. Im Juni hatte es schon eine ähnliche Umfrage gegeben, damals lag der Unterschied bei 10 Prozent weniger.

Forscher analysieren Datensammelei von Android-Apps

Nächste Version von Final Cut Studio verspätet sich offenbar
Wie Hardmac.com schreibt, wird sich die nächste Version von Final Cut Studio verspäten. Ursprünglich sah Apples Roadmap vor, noch dieses Jahr eine neue Version zu veröffentlichen. Unbestätigten Quellen zufolge liegt die Entwicklung aber deutlich hinter dem Zeitplan zurück, so dass Apple nicht nur den Releasetermin auf das Jahr 2011 verschieben wird, sondern auch einige der geplanten Neuerungen auf die für 2013 geplante Folgeversion verlegen wird. Zu diesen Neuerungen zählt beispielsweise eine vereinheitlichte Oberfläche über alle Programme hinweg. Meinungsverschiedenheiten zwischen den einzelnen Entwicklungsteams sowie der Abzug diverser Programmierer für iOS-Projekte hätten zu den Verschiebungen geführt, so der Bericht.
Die aktuelle Version von Final Cut Studio erschien im Sommer 2009, ist also erst ein gutes Jahr alt. Viele Anwender warten allerdings sehnlichst auf Verbesserungen an Apples Pro Apps, insbesondere auf die Umstellung auf Cocoa und 64-Bit-Unterstützung.

Google Instant funktioniert nun auch in der Schweiz
Vor wenigen Wochen hatte Google eine neue Echtzeitsuchfunktion unter dem Namen Google Instant lanciert. Funktionierte Google Instant ursprünglich nur auf der amerikanischen Google-Webseite, hat es der neue Service nun auch in die Schweiz geschafft. Die Echtzeitsuche zeigt bereits nach der Eingabe eines einzigen Buchstabens erste Treffer an, mit jedem weiteren Buchstaben wird die Suche verfeinert. Um in den Genuss von Google Instant zu kommen, muss man allerdings über einen Google-Account verfügen und sich auf google.ch einloggen.

Zweite Beta von iOS 4.2 bringt Tethering fürs iPad
Registrierte Entwickler können seit gestern eine zweite Betaversion von iOS 4.2 aus Apples iOS Dev Center herunterladen. Die meisten Neuerungen gegenüber der Beta 1 betreffen lediglich Kleinigkeiten. Lädt man ein Video auf YouTube hoch, erhält man nun Zugriff auf die Privatsphäreeinstellungen. Ausserdem wird der App-Wechsel nun auch auf dem iPad von einer Animation begleitet. Die interessanteste Neuerung befindet sich in den Einstellungen, wo neuerdings ein Punkt «Internet Tethering» auftaucht. Diese Funktion würde es ermöglichen, die Internet-Verbindung eines iPad 3G mit anderen Geräten zu teilen. Noch vor einigen Monaten hatte Apple den Gerüchten über eine geplante Tethering-Option für das iPad eine Absage erteilt. Derzeit ist die entsprechende Option nur bei einigen europäischen Netzwerkbetreibern vorhanden. Es ist gut möglich, dass die Mobilfunkanbieter für das Aktivieren der Tethering-Funktion eine Gebühr verlangen werden, sofern es die Funktion denn tatsächlich bis in die finale Fassung von iOS 4.2 scha

Sanyo pumpt mehr Power in die eneloop-Batterien

AK Zensur kritisiert Unwirksamkeit dänischer Netzsperren
Der Arbeitskreis gegen Internetsperren und Zensur (AK Zensur) hat eine in Zusammenarbeit mit anderen europäischen Bürgerrechtsorganisationen erarbeitete Analyse aktuell in Dänemark gesperrter Websites vorgestellt. Demnach enthalten von 167 zwischen 25. und 28. September 2010 überprüften Einträgen lediglich drei tatsächlich Inhalte, die als Kinderpornografie eingestuft werden können. Zwei davon waren schon 2008 auf der dänischen Sperrliste verzeichnet und stehen beziehungsweise standen in Norwegen, Finnland und Schweden darauf, wurden aber bisher nicht entfernt.

Razer Tron Mouse leaves light trails in our hearts (video)
We don't really expect that the actual Tron movie will be any good, but boy, its officially endorsed accessories aren't looking half bad. The $100 laser mouse from Razer has snuck out for a quick pre-release video demo where we get to see it tracking gloriously on an accompanying "precision" mousepad. There's hardly much to be learnt about the mouse's ergonomics or 5600dpi accuracy, but it does glow with that mighty inviting shade of blue (cyan?) and the mousepad reacts to the laser's illumination by leaving dreamy light trails after your movements. Acer says netbooks won't die as prices plunge to beat iPad
Acer Taiwan's president Scott Lin today insisted at a press conference that netbooks would survive in the face of tablets like the iPad despite signs to the contrary. He believed the dual-core Atom N550 would keep the category going as it gave about 50 percent more performance without hiking the cost, giving users a reason to pick one over a tablet. About 40 million netbooks would ship in 2010, or about 20 percent of the entire notebook arena, Lim told Digitimes and others at the event.

HP Envy 15 and Envy 14 with Radiance display no longer available through HP, new CPUs ease the sting
Well, this is depressing. Earlier today we were tipped off on disappearance of the Envy 15 on HP's site, and according to the company it'll no longer be available through HP. Obviously, you can still snatch up the 15.6-inch version of HP's magnesium alloy rig through other e-tailers, but there's no telling how long they'll be in stock. The vanishing of the Envy 15 happens to make a lot of sense with the introduction of the Envy 14, but there's also something fishy going on with that one. Virgina schools to test social studies on iPads
Educational publisher Pearson and the Commonwealth of Virgina have launched a first-of-its-kind full social studies curriculum for K-12 students in a 12-week pilot program that runs entirely on iPads as part of the state's "Beyond Textbooks" initiative. Beginning November 1st, seventh- and ninth-grade students at select schools in Arlington and Pulaski counties as well as the city of Newport News will use iPads to interact with four specially-designed apps tailored to the Virginia educational system's US and world history programs.

PlayOn finally gets its iPhone app approved, HTML5 lets out a sigh of resignation
We're loving this new, slightly more liberal wave of App Store approvals (aren't we easily pleased?), and it looks like PlayOn drew the lucky number today. After waiting in vain for an app approval, PlayOn actually developed a fairly sufficient HTML5 solution to its streaming-web-video-to-your-device problem, but there's nothing quite like the sheen and polish of a bonafide app. Unfortunately, PlayOn's desktop software, which is required to make this Netflix / Amazon / Hulu / ESPN / CBS / etc.-beaming possible, is still PC only.

iPad 4.2 Beta 2 Adds Tethering Settings
The latest iPad iOS 4.2 Beta 2 released yesterday appears to include new tethering options in the settings (pic via Paulgrav). According to 9to5Mac the options only appear on European carriers and does not yet appear on AT&T devices.

First look: Postbox 2

NVIDIA GPU settlement covers Apple, Dell, HP repairs
NVIDIA has agreed to provide compensation to owners of Apple, HP and Dell computers as part of a settlement in a class-action lawsuit. The legal action surrounds NVIDIA graphics components in a variety of computers, including 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pros manufactured between May 2007 and September 2008. Other systems include certain Dell and HP machines sold between 2005 and 2010.

HTC Mondrian poses for press shots?
German site BestBoyZ has delivered a string of HTC leaks in recent weeks, and the latest is a fairly legit-looking handful of alleged press shots of the Mondrian. Most Target stores to get 20-30 iPads in first wave
Most Target stores may only be stocked with 20 to 30 iPads in the first wave of shipments that will arrive on October 3. Some of the heavy-traffic locations are expected to get more supplies, ranging from 50 to 80 devices, while all stores will get "ample accessories."

iOS 4.2 beta 2 bringing tethering to iPads?
Apple's recently released iOS 4.2 beta 2 may bring 3G tethering to the iPad for the first time as a finding this evening may have confirmed its existence. A Swedish user noticed that the APN Settings section in Cellular Data has a separate Internet Tethering category that asks for the APN, username and password separately from regular access. The same raw settings were in iOS before it had its finished tethering interface, 9to5 Mac noted.

Time Warner fights 99 cent rentals, too
NBC isn't the only broadcast company that's fighting Apple on 99 cent iTunes rentals -- apparently Time Warner doesn't want in on the plan, either. That's according to its CEO Jeff Bewkes, who told a conference of media executives in London that Apple is underselling television content by providing cheap rentals to customers. "How can you justify renting your first-run TV shows individually for 99 cents an episode," he asked, "and thereby jeopardize the sale of the same shows as a series to branded networks that pay hundreds of millions of dollars and make those shows available to loyal viewers for free?" Nintendo shows off special edition Super Mario Bros. DSi and DSi XL
Yeah, Super Mario Bros. was kind of a big deal, and we can't fault Nintendo for wanting to celebrate: September 13th marked the 25th anniversary of the game's launch, and Nintendo is pushing out special editions of the DSi and DSi XL (pictured) to celebrate, along with some pretty sweet swag. We mentioned the handhelds this morning, but now we've got a couple pictures -- way to play it subdued, Nintendo. Unfortunately, the consoles are for Japan only, but what we're particularly digging is this Super Mario Collection Special Pack that Nintendo will be launching alongside. Final Fantasy I and II on sale, ESPN app free, Real Racing on sale this weekend
Here's some good news about a few popular apps on the App Store:
Square Enix has dropped the price on retro titles Final Fantasy I and II. The games were originally released at $8.99, but to celebrate more widespread localization, the apps have dropped down to $3.99. Great games, nice price.

Kobo to preload on BlackBerry PlayBook as iBooks rival
Kobo this evening revealed that a version of its eReader app will be preloaded on the BlackBerry PlayBook from the start. RIM said picked the eReader hardware maker as Kobo had an international e-bookstore and was adept at customizing for specific countries. The bookseller in turn said that a WebKit browser made it an ideal fit since it uses the same engine for many of its existing apps, including those on the iPad.

BIAS takes on LPs/tapes with SoundSaver
Well-known audio software maker BIAS has debuted a new consumer application aimed at converting records and tapes into digital formats, a popular pastime with music lovers. Postbox 2.0 available now!
We've covered Postbox in the past, and I've been using it regularly since the beta. Version 2.0 was just officially released, and there's a lot to love in the latest incarnation of this Mail.app replacement.
Postbox already had some great organization capabilities, including "Conversation" views for email threads, and "Topics" for tagging messages and quickly sorting them. With version 2.0, organization is faster and even easier, thanks to features like Quick Move and some new keyboard shortcuts.
