TUAW preview: Billabong Surf Trip
Chillingo invited us out to the headquarters of surfwear manufacturer Billabong yesterday for a look at a new iPhone and iPad game called Billabong Surf Trip. The game is designed by a Portugese developer named Biodroid Entertainment (who told me that they've done some work on other consoles, but this is their first title for Apple's iOS). As you may have guessed from the name, the title is sponsored by Billabong, and features the ability to create a surfer and then send him or her around the world to take on the waves.
Before I sat down to play the game, I asked Billabong's PR Director Jim Kempton about why they'd gotten involved in an iPhone game, and he said the goal of the game was to "introduce people to what surfing is about, on the level that we're hoping

Pentax K-5 leaks out
An image of an upcoming Pentax K-5 digital SLR camera has been leaked courtesy of LensTip. At the same time, alleged specs of the camera have been revealed over on PentaxForums. Briefly: Nook for Android updated, Nikon Coolpix pre-orders
A new version of Nook for Android has been released in the Android Market, adding additional options for customizing the reading interface. In version 2.2, several options have been added to improve the overall experience, including additional line spacing options, the ability to turn text justification on and off, and an improved settings screen. Microsoft celebrates Windows Phone 7 RTM with funeral parade for BlackBerry and iPhone
The iPhone's dead, long live the Windows Phone. That must be the genius proclamation that incited Microsoft to celebrate Windows Phone 7 reaching RTM status with the incomprehensible procession you see above. An elaborate parade, replete with hearses and black capes, was organized last week to denote the passing of the BlackBerry and iPhone into the land of unwanted gadgets. We'd say this is done in poor taste, but we don't enjoy stating the obvious. We will, however, enjoy the fallout from this poorly judged stunt. Rumor: FaceTime on the way for iChat and Windows
Ever since the FaceTime announcement as an 'open platform,' the question's been hanging over us: when do we expect desktop support for the new videoconferencing approach? "Soon," is what French website Mac4ever is reporting today. They have a pretty good track record, so the prediction is worth noting.
The article says Apple will soon release a version of iChat that will allow Apple desktop and laptop owners to video chat to iOS devices with FaceTime. Further, the speculation is that Apple will do the same thing for Windows users wanting to talk to FaceTime users either on Macs or iPhones.
Apple has stated that it expects to see FaceTime protocols widely used. If the rumor is correct, that goal should be well

iPhone owners downloading more apps, says Nielsen
iPhone owners tend to have the most apps installed in terms of the smartphone market, says Nielsen. The research group recently surveyed about 4,000 people, and found that iPhone users have an average of 40 apps installed. The number compares against 25 for Android users, and just 14 for BlackBerry owners. All of the figures are up since December however, indicating a growing general interest in apps.

iPhone 4 free case program to end September 30th, get one while you still can
Back when Apple initially said it'd offer free iPhone 4 cases to assuage reception concerns, there was a September 30th deadline given for the program. After which, according to Steve and company during the post-press conference Q&A, Apple would "evaluate" the prolonged need for such an offer. Well, looks like the decision has been made. Apple brings an end to iPhone 4 case program
Claiming that iPhone 4 antenna problems are proving "even smaller than we originally thought," Apple says it is officially discontinuing the free case program as introduced in July. "A small percentage of iPhone 4 users need a case, and we want to continue providing them a Bumper case for free," the company writes. "For everyone else, we are discontinuing the free case program on all iPhone 4s sold after September 30, 2010."

Qualcomm may replace Infineon in iPhone 5 design
Talk of Apple snapping up Qualcomm chipsets for future iPhones gained momentum on Friday with a claim in Taiwan's Commercial Times that Apple has ordered large amounts of Qualcomm chips. Over-the-air notes syncing option disappears from iPhone 3G in iOS 4.1
For the iPhone 3G, the biggest new feature for many users under iOS 4.1 is the phone now actually works. Making the iPhone 3G usable under iOS 4 came with some trade-offs before the new OS was even released -- app multitasking and wallpapers didn't make the cut on the older iPhone -- but it looks like a couple more features have been pruned from the iPhone 3G after iOS 4.1.

Motorola announces NYXboard QWERTY remote, super capacitor-based NYXgreen
Could we be seeing the beginning of a QWERTY trend in the living room? We can only hope -- the latest to join in on the fun is Motorola, which has just introduced its new NYXboard remote at IBC 2010. In Brief: Amazon tips hand on Microsoft Office release date
Computerworld points to an October 26 ship date for Microsoft Office 2011, based on Amazon's page updates indicating the 10/26 availability -- the products have since been switched back to "sign up to be notified" pre-release mode.
Gregg Keizler's piece also reiterates the discount options for buying Office 2008 and saving on Office 2011; by purchasing the 2008 versions now, buyers can get $25 or $50 off versus the purchase price of the next version.

As you might imagine, becoming the dominant player in electronics component manufacturing in China -- particularly at a time when competition has never been fiercer -- takes a particular personality type, and after reading BusinessWeek's profile of Foxconn founder Terry Gou, you get a very real sense that the dude meets the criteria. JPMorgan, UBS to hurt BlackBerry by allowing Android, iPhone
The BlackBerry may be handed one of its more significant losses as insiders said today that JPMorgan and UBS are working to allow Android and iPhone hardware for their workers. JPMorgan is purportedly testing "a few hundred" devices of both varieties to make sure they work well with its Exchange system, Bloomberg said. Under the proposed final plan, staff would have to pay for the phones themselves, unlike the BlackBerry, but could use it for both personal and company work.

FTC to take close look at loosened App Store rules?
Apple's policy reversal on third-party development tools for iOS may yet draw close checks from the Federal Trade Commission, sources tell the Wall Street Journal. Google Voice may finally be approved for the App Store
After a saga that's lasted more than a year, it looks like Google Voice-enabled app GV Mobile may finally be approved for the App Store. Following recent announcements that gave developers far more transparency into the actual rules of Apple's App Store approval process, Google Voice developer Sean Kovacs mused on Twitter, "Since GV Mobile complies with all 110+ guidelines newly posted by Apple, it should get approved."
Kovacs tweeted a followup soon afterward: "Good news: I did get confirmation back from Apple that it will most likely get back in once I resubmit."

It seems more than a little odd to us that Apple hasn't bothered to make FaceTime compatible with its own longstanding desktop video chat service, iChat, but we've at least supposed that it's an inevitability with whatever upcoming Mac OS X update or software bundle that Apple deems appropriate. LG intros four IPS-based desktop monitors
LG has debuted four new LED backlit IPS-based desktop monitors. The IPS206T, IPS226V and the IPS236V are aimed home audiences, while the the IPS2321P is for the pro market. Intel, AMD to show their graphics-in-CPU designs at IDF
Intel's Developer Forum should be the first chance at seeing working examples of both Intel- and AMD-made processors with fully built-in graphics. Audiophiles are quick to name the umpteen flavors of Dolby, but when you go back to basics, there are just three types of surround sound today -- each easily identified by their plug. Virtual surround uses just a single stereo jack, emulating multiple channels from two, while digital surround travels across optical or coaxial S/PDIF cables (or HDMI) and has to be decoded. Google: Android 2.2, apps aren't built for tablets
In spite of attempts to use it, Android 2.2 isn't a good fit for tablets, Google said late Thursday. Samsung's Galaxy Tab may use the current OS, but it's "not optimised for use on tablets," mobile product director Hugo Barra told TechRadar. It wasn't designed for the larger screen size, and many apps in the Android Market may break without knowing how to cope with the extra size, the manager said.

Grand Theft Auto comes to Mac, iPad
Several of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto games are making their way to new Apple platforms. Just out is the iPad version of Chinatown Wars, which was previously limited to the iPhone, iPod touch and Nintendo DS. On the iPad the game is still $10, but with sharper resolution, more detailed 3D and new visual effects. The Mac should meanwhile be getting three older GTA games later this year; these include GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas.

VLC für iPad: Demnächst, hoffentlich
Träumen ist erlaubt – schon bei den Streaming-Lösungen OpenStreamer und AirVideo träumte man ein wenig vom formatunabhängigen, netzwerk-weiten Videostreamen aufs iPad. VLC läuft nun auf dem Apple-Tablet und würde das prinzipiell ermöglichen – falls Apple die App zulässt.

Adobe resumes efforts on Packager for iPhone
With the news that Apple has eased restrictions on third-party development tools, a very excited-sounding Adobe has announced it will resume working on its Flash-to-iPhone compiler, Packager for iPhone.

Foxconn now manufacturing 137,000 iPhone 4s per day
Apple's primary manufacturing partner, Foxconn, is now churning out a tremendous number of iPhone 4s per day, according to the latter company's chairman. Terry Gou notes that the company is producing about 137,000 iPhone 4s per day at its Longhua campus plant in Shenzhen, China. Android, iOS to surpass BlackBerry in OS share by 2011
Both Android and iOS will have overtaken the BlackBerry for market share within the next year, Gartner predicted on Friday. It saw Google overtaking RIM's BlackBerry this year for the second-place spot, but by 2011 expected both Android and the iPhone to have outrun the BlackBerry in 2011. Android will have extended its lead over iOS by shipping almost 92 million phones next year, or 22.2 percent share, where Apple will have moved under 71 million (17.1 percent); RIM would ship just 62 million (down to 15 percent).

T-Mobile G2 retails for $199 on October 6th at Best Buy
Outside of confirming the phone's existence and predicting pre-orders this month, T-Mobile hasn't put out its own official price tag and launch date for the G2 yet, but that's apparently not stopping Best Buy from publishing its own version of upcoming events. It shows a purported K-5 DSLR from Pentax, whose body looks almost a carbon copy of the well loved, but now aging, K-7. Wie die Computer-Zukunft vor 20 Jahren aussah
The Unofficial Apple Weblog hat ein sehenswertes Video aus dem Jahr 1988 ausgegraben, in dem eine Reihe von Experten ihre Vorstellungen über die Zukunft des Computers preisgeben. Unter anderem kommen Steve Wozniak und Alan Kay zu Wort. Das Video stammt aus dem von Apple in den späten 80er-Jahren durchgeführten «Project 2000». Apple bat Studenten, ihre Visionen vom Computer des Jahres 2000 in Form eines Papers einzureichen. Anschliessend bewerteten Apples Experten die eingereichten Konzepte.
Das Siegerprojekt trug damals den Namen «Tablet: The Personal Computer of the year 2000» und lässt sich im Archiv der NASA einsehen.

It may not be the most timely KIRF we've seen, but it looks like folks that were taken with the Nokia Booklet 3G's design but not its high, on-contract price will soon have the device they've been waiting for -- sort of. While its 3G-ness is still in question, this as yet unnamed netbook does pack a 10.1-inch, 1,024 x 600 display, along with an Atom N450 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a non-removable battery, and "maybe" an HDMI output. Still no word on an exact price or release date, but M.I.C Gadget expects it to be "at most" 2,000 yuan, or just under $300.

iOS exploit promises to jailbreak iPhone 4, iPad, new Touch
The latest iOS exploit, discovered quickly after the public iOS 4.1 launch, has reportedly been confirmed to work with the iPhone 4, iPad, and even the new iPod touch, according to a Twitter post from a Dev Team member. Videotron hints at iPhone with 3G for itself, T-Mobile
Quebec's regional carrier Videotron today launched its cellphone network with a hint that Apple was developing a version of the iPhone that would work for its own network, Wind Mobile and for T-Mobile USA. Sirius XM has updated its XM SkyDock app (free, App Store). for the iPhone and iPod touch with background audio support. The new update adds background audio for all iOS devices running 4.0 or later, allowing anyone to listen to their favorite shows while using other apps. In addition, the update improves dock transitions when used with iOS 4 devices and address a bug that displayed a "Dock not detected" error messages even when the device was docked. PopCap making 25% of business in mobile space, sees future in social gaming
PopCap's Dave Roberts spoke with TechFlash recently, and revealed that about 25% of the company's profits are coming from the mobile division. Tearing apart an old Apple TV just for the heck of it
My "love" for the original Apple TV is well-documented. I purchased a 40 GB model not long after the device hit the market, and found it not to my liking. I hated how I had to slowly sync everything to the device, it had little space to begin with (yeah, I know I should have just swapped out the HD for a bigger model), it ran hot, and the UI was never up to Apple standards in my humble opinion.
