TUAW Review: iGrabber, a cheap way to digitize old videos
The other day while I was attempting to clean up my office, I came across a bunch of old MiniDV tapes from various vacations that my wife and I had taken over the years. That got me thinking about the 8mm videotapes from the pre-MiniDV age, and the even older VHS vacation tapes from the Pleistocene Era. Since I have done a pretty good job of going to a paperless office, I figured it was about time to make my other media go digital as well.
I don't necessarily want to edit the movies right now -- at this point, all I want to do is get the raw video transferred to my iMac and then at some future date when I have the time (like 20 years from now), I'll transform them into mini-documentaries. The big concern I had was getting the video into my Mac, and since I no longer shoot v

HP's Bradley says company is not trying to be Apple, will sell 15 million webOS printers next year
It's no secret that HP's Todd Bradley is one of the leading candidates to succeed ousted CEO Mark Hurd, and it doesn't look like he was doing much to dissuade that notion at the now happening TechCrunch Disrupt conference. News: Apple to take 21% of mobile ad market by year’s end
Apple’s new iAd mobile advertising platform will end the year with 21 percent of the U.S. mobile advertising market, according to a new report. RIM shadows Apple, Google with BlackBerry Ad Service
RIM kicked off BlackBerry DevCon today with plans for its own mobile ad service in the vein of Apple's iAd or Google's AdMob. BlackBerry Advertising Service will give app writers access to multiple ad networks to subsidize free or cheap apps. Developers will get a similar 60 percent cut of any ad revenue, but RIM is hoping to avoid iAd-level control and will give the advertisers and ad networks direction over the creative presentation of apps.

RIM unveils BlackBerry PlayBook tablet to challenge iPad
RIM today unveiled the PlayBook, its first shot at the tablet space. The PlayBook has a seven-inch display and is just 9.7mm thick. It's designed as a high-powered browsing device with both a WebKit browser and Flash 10.1 support. The slate is billed as a media-heavy device with full 1080p video output over HDMI -- including entirely different media sources -- and has HD-capable cameras on both the front and back.

Apple taking mobile ad share from Google, Yahoo, should have 21% by year end
Apple's iAd service is a relative newcomer to the mobile ads industry, which is probably why it's completely falling apart. No, sorry Carol, we're kidding -- Apple's service is doing extremely well, and is already threatening established mobile advertising services like Google and Yahoo!. RIM announces WebWorks development kit, in-app payments, ad platform, and BBM API

OCZ intros fast but mainstream Onyx 2 SSDs
Storage products maker OCZ has showed off its latest solid state drive, the Onyx 2 Series. The 2.5-inch SSDs are said to be priced lower than competing products but still sport SandForce controllers. Their maximum read speeds are rated at 270MBps, while write speeds peak at 265MBps.

Polish site threatened with takedown over Apple references
Apple's legal team has sent a cease-and-desist request to a popular Polish news site, AppleMania, reports say. The site's name and logo allegedly violate Apple trademarks, which the company also suggests could potentially confuse the public as to the relationship between the two parties. AppleMania is accused of reaping "unfair benefits" that could "lead to the dilution of the distinctive power of Apple's trademarks."

EVO 4G and Droid Incredible vie for title of best Android hotspot in informal test
Wireless tethering is rapidly becoming a desirable option in top-tier smartphones, but which device delivers the best? Laptop Magazine swore to find out, pitting six of Android's best (two HTC, two Motorola and two Samsung) against one another in a brutal data-sucking showdown in New York City. Radeon HD 6700 specs leak, promise twice the power
AMD's Radeon HD 6700 series has had virtually all of its details leak today through a forum post at Chinese site Chiphell. The new series, now pitched as mid-range, is due to have "twice the horsepower" of the 5700 series it replaces. Clock speeds and memory bandwidth should go higher and give much larger texture fill rates as well as more than a 60 percent boost to the brute computing strength: a Radeon HD 6770 would produce about 2.3 teraflops, or more than the older but higher-end Radeon HD 5850's 2 teraflops.

iPod nano built into Dreamcast VMU
I saw the new iPad nano for the first time this weekend, and though I knew it was small, of course, I was surprised by just how small it was. Movie studios may bring pre-DVD streaming to PS3, Xbox, more
Disney, Sony and Warner are close to testing a proposed system that would give Internet access to movies before they've reached Blu-ray or DVD, multiple official and unofficial tips disclosed on Monday. Of the three, Disney would be the most aggressive and would let viewers watch movies on any web-connected device and possibly the PS3 and Xbox 360 as well. Found Footage: A look at European FaceTime ads
Apple's advertising for the FaceTime video chat feature on the iPhone 4 is emotional and effective, and now the ads are making it to the European market. All of the ads are backed with the universally-known voice of Louis Armstrong singing "When You're Smiling," and there is no audible dialog, so these ads can be used in just about any European market. Study: we're keeping our mobiles longer, despite sinking prices
Had your current cellphone for the better part of the this century? Turns out you aren't the only one -- according to new research gathered by J.D. Power and Associates, Americans are holding onto their mobiles for longer than ever these days. In fact, the study found that the length of time customers keep their traditional wireless cell phone has increased by 17 percent from 2009, with the average customer holding onto their phone for around 20.5 months. That's the longest period since this study began tracking the data in 1999, when the average was 17.3 months. Apple seen shipping more iPads in 2011 than Android combined
Apple is poised to control the tablet market for at least the next year, Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley said today. He estimated that Apple would ship 13.4 million iPads in 2010 and 25.5 million in 2011. The next closest, Samsung's Galaxy Tab, would reach 1.5 million by the end of the year and move another six million in 2011.

Apple is the most-covered tech company
Here's a bit of news that's no shock to us. According to the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism, Apple receives more coverage from the press than any other tech company.
The research center recently concluded a year-long study which found that a full 15.1 percent of all tech articles were about Apple. Google commanded 11.4 percent of articles while 3 percent were primarily about Microsoft. The study used data from 52 newspapers, broadcast and Web sites from June 2009 through June 2010.

First working Social Bicycles GPS-enabled bike lock pictured, looking chunky
It's been a little over a month since we last saw the Social Bicycles (or SoBi) bike lock concept, a simple thing that could revolutionize bicycle loaning worldwide. New lawsuit targets iTunes video downloads
New Jersey's Multi-Format has filed a lawsuit against Apple, accusing the latter company of violating a 2003 patent related to video. Titled Multi-format audio/video production system, the patent describes a way of reformatting content so it can run on different devices. Input "may be translated into any variety of graphics or television formats," documentation goes on, "including NTSC, PAL, SECAM, and HDTV, and stored as data-compressed images, using any of several commercially available methods such as Motion JPEG, MPEG, etc."

Nielsen: growth of digital music sales flat in 2010
It's a bit early for the big music companies to start panicking, but it looks like the heyday of double-digit growth in digital music sales may now be behind us. That's according to market research firm Nielsen, at least, which found that sales in the US fell flat in 2010 after a 13 percent increase from 2008 to 2009, and a whopping 28 percent jump from 2007 to 2008. Nielsen is quick to point out, however, that it thinks this is a "plateau," and that it "doesn't mean that this digital consumption is going to drop significantly." EPFL develops Linux-based swarming micro air vehicles
The kids at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (or EPFL) have been cooking up quite a bit lately, as this video demonstrates. iAd takes large bite out of US mobile advertising market
Apple's iAd should end the year with about 21 percent of the US mobile advertising market, according to an IDC estimate. Google is expected to fall to 21 percent, down from 27 percent in 2009 when including results from AdMob, which the company only formally acquired in May. Yahoo is forecast to drop from 12 to 9 percent, while Microsoft should slide from 10 to 7, and Nokia from 5 to 2.

Nielsen: US digital music sales flattening out
Online music sales have leveled off in the course of the past year, Nielsen said today. Sales and subscriptions at iTunes, Amazon MP3 and other American stores were roughly similar to 2009 compared to a 13 percent increase the year before and a 28 percent jump in 2008. The researchers didn't have a direct explanation but suspected that disenchantment with the music on sale, as well as economic difficulties and a confusion of sources, contributed to the effect.

So herrlich analog kann elektronische Musik sein. denha hat aus einer Murmelmaschine einen Sequenzer gebaut, der in diesem Fall diverse Soundmaschinen wie die XR-NoizBoxll ansteuert. Apple TVs are on the way from Shenzen
Wow.
No sooner had we published the post about Apple TVs being queued for shipping than our TUAW mailboxes were filled with a steady stream of shipping notices.
The new Apple TVs are now being shipped from Shenzen, China to a variety of destinations, and most people are seeing either Thursday, September 30 or Friday, October 1 as the delivery date.
I'm as giddy as a schoolgirl about the shipment - a middle-aged, slightly overweight schoolgirl with a beard, but you get the idea.
Thanks to the many tipsters who let us know about the packages that shipped while we were sleeping.

RIM to talk tablet software today; BlackBerry tablet distant
RIM's opening DevCon presentations won't show any actual BlackBerrry tablet hardware but may talk about its software, sources mentioned today. China Unicom struggles to fill 200,000 iPhone 4 pre-orders
China Unicom is having a hard time keeping up with the demand for the iPhone 4, according to official statements. The carrier notes that while it actually received some 200,000 pre-orders last week, only about 60,000 phones were sold during Saturday's launch. Of these 40,000 went to individuals, while 10,000 fulfilled direct distribution bulk orders. The remaining 10,000 units are not mentioned in a Unicom press release.

Apple, Google extend deal for iOS
Business Insider is reporting that Apple and Google have extended the deal that brought Google search to the iOS. In a recent interview with Charlie Rose, Google CEO Eric Schmidt mentioned that his company's arrangement with Apple has been "recently extended."

New Apple TVs prepared for shipment
We received a lot of tips today from people who ordered the new $99 Apple TV on September 1st and have, like me, been anxiously checking the order status in the online Apple Store. As of today, many orders are showing the message you see above -- that the device has been "prepared for shipment" sometime in September.
Well, today is September 27th, which doesn't leave all that much time for Apple or the OEM to ship these devices. My guess is that the 747 freighters are lining up on the tarmac in Shanghai or Hong Kong, waiting to be loaded with the first half-million or so Apple TVs.

Segway Inc. owner rides over cliff to his death

Für die Power soll ein Ultra-low-voltage-Prozessor aus Intels aktueller Core-i-Serie sorgen. Bisher bot Apple das MacBook Air lediglich mit den älteren Core-2-Duo-Prozessoren an. I'll be honest -- I heard that Aftermath was a zombie game and almost gave up on it. I wouldn't be offended if you did the same, since lots of developers (especially iPhone developers) are depending a little too much on zombies for their gameplay. Yes, it's fun to fight the walking undead, but they're used over and over again because a) they're easy to program, and b) they let you make a "shooting humans" game without getting involved in the whole morality thing.
But Aftermath is still worth a look. While a lot of zombie games on the store go abstract or silly, this one sticks pretty close to realistic, and it has some serious quality and interesting gameplay behind it. You're fighting

Oracle will Chiphersteller übernehmen
Oracle-CEO Larry Ellison hat bei einem Meeting mit Finanzanalysten erklärt, dass sein Unternehmen am Kauf eines Chipherstellers interessiert sei. Acer Aspire TimelineX series updated with new processor options
It really does feel like it was just yesterday that Acer released its new TimelineX series, but believe it or not, it's processor upgrade time for the thin and light lappie line. The 11.6-inch Aspire TimelineX 1830T will now be available with ultra-low voltage Core i3, i5 and i7 CPU options, though Acer's pushing the $900 Core i7 680UM-powered version (the 1830T-68U118) rather hard. If you're looking for that sort of power in a 3.1-pound chassis, it's not all that bad of a deal, especially considering the similarly spec'd Lenovo IdeaPad U160 costs

FCC: white space devices won't require spectrum sensing modules
Phew. For a moment few years there, we thought any device set up to operate on these so-called white spaces -- which have been vacated following the analog-to-digital TV transition -- would be forced to use spectrum sensing modules in order to ensure that no TV station was operating in areas in which it wanted to. Based on the FCC's Second Memorandum Opinion and Order, which was just published a few days back, it looks as if forthcoming white space devices will not be required

iOS alarms broken for New Zealand users after Daylight Savings
We just started Daylight Savings Time in New Zealand yesterday. Since then, many iOS users here have experienced what's probably one of the weirdest bugs I've ever seen: our alarms are now going off an hour early. My iPhone's alarm woke me up at 5:50 in the morning today instead of 6:50, and it turns out I'm not the only one.
In the iPhone's built-in Clock app, setting a recurring alarm will cause it to trigger an hour early every time if you're running iOS 4.1, iTunes 10.0.1, and live in a Southern Hemisphere country that's just gone over to Daylight Savings Time (which, for now at least, just means New Zealand).
