New Galaxy Tab video offers thorough overview, glimpse of starry mail client
Can't get enough of the Galaxy Tab? Then Samsung's got you covered with its latest, and possibly most detailed video overview of the tablet yet. Running just over nine minutes, the video doesn't exactly offer a ton in the way of surprises (apart from a rather curious contact listing for someone named "Bill Jobs"), but Samsung's demonstration of the Tab's email client did catch our eye. iPhone 4 to launch in Guam on Friday via GTA TeleGuam
The iPhone 4 is officially launching in the US territory of Guam on Friday. The expansion follows a series of recent releases, including South Africa and South Korea. GTA TeleGuam is set to be the carrier, and has already announced plan details. Of special interest may be the day-one availability of tethering, with a monthly cost of $15. It can be added and removed as needed. GTA is selling two family plans, and three standard plans.

AMD warns of revenue loss due to weak notebook market
AMD tonight warned that its revenue would swing to a decline in the summer. It expected revenue to drop one to four percent from the $1.65 billion this spring as it faced "weaker than expected" interest in its chips. The shortfall was especially severe for notebook chips in North America and Western Europe.

EU official says high mobile roaming fees "outdated"
The European Union's telecoms chief is calling the high roaming fees charged by European carriers an "outdated concept" and says work will continue on reducing them. According to a Thursday report, Digital Agenda Commissioner Neelie Kroes blames the issue on a lack of competition.

Apple brings projector maker to trial over 'pod' name
Apple is headed to trial with Sector Labs over use of the word "pod" in a product name, Wired reports. The latter company is the creator of a video projector called the Video Pod, which Apple accuses of infringing on the iPod trademark. Sector Labs' co-founder, Daniel Kokin, has argued that his company's output has no relation to Apple products.

Sonos has announced a new accessory for owners of the Sonos wireless music system. The Wireless Dock allows you to quickly connect an iPod or iPhone and access the music on it from any room in the house that has a Sonos ZonePlayer.
The device is a pretty clever idea that is a natural expansion of the existing Sonos brand. HTC Desire HD ROM ported to Droid Incredible, Desire
You've already seen it ported to the HTC HD2, and it looks like the recently-leaked HTC Desire HD ROM has now also made its way to two more likely candidates for a port: the Droid Incredible and original Desire. Apple's MobileMe News details how iWork for iPad works with iDisk
iWork for iPad was updated yesterday with many changes, one of those being that the mobile app suite now includes integration with the MobileMe iDisk.

Editorial: Firmware, forums, and desperation -- the dark side of Android hacking
That picture above is no joke -- that's where I ended up last night trying to revive my Droid X review unit. Apple recruits host of former SurfaceInk engineers
Apple has hired an unusually large number of people from SurfaceInk in recent weeks, evidence reveals. Six workers left the latter company in August, giving Apple three product development engineers, two product design engineers and a mechanical engineer. In September Apple has so far hired just one person, who is now serving as a consulting product design engineer.

T-Mobile G2 pre-orders starting tomorrow for current customers, it seems
T-Mobile has had a longstanding tradition of giving current customers first dibs on pre-orders for hot products, and it looks like the upcoming G2 will be no exception. TmoNews has a rather telling screen shot suggesting that T-Mobile subscribers will be able to sign up for the Android-powered QWERTY slider starting tomorrow through October 4, with retail availability following a couple days later on the 6th; we've already had that date on lock through Best Buy Mobile, so it comes as no surprise. Sony's blazing fast BDX-S500U Blu-ray drive tests USB 2.0's true transfer chops
Here's a lesson in actual vs. theoretical. Sony Optiarc America has announced the new BDX-S500U external USB 2.0 Blu-ray drive capable of burning single-layer BD-R discs at smoking speeds of 6x or dual-layer discs at up to 4x. If you do the math, those specs imply transfer speeds of 27Mbps for single-sided 25GB discs and total burn times of roughly 20 minutes. That's great news for folks with PCs looking to use the high-storage medium or watch 3D Blu-rays -- except for one tiny hitch. Yes, you read that correctly. The fevered dreams of crime scene investigators up and down the country are being brought to reality by Adobe, with just a single extra lens and some crafty software knowhow. Basically, a plenoptic lens is composed of a litany of tiny "sub-lenses," which allow those precious photons you're capturing to be recorded from multiple perspectives. Samsung hints at 10-inch Galaxy Tab for first half 2011
Samsung Mobile UK manager Gary Twohig revealed in an interview with SiliconRepublic that a 10-inch version of the Galaxy Tab will be released during the first half of next year. The devices, including the seven-inch version, will not sport a Super AMOLED display, he added, but the displays will be capable of displaying HD video. The 10-inch Galaxy Tab will still have a version of Android, but whether it's 2.2, 3.0 or a future release like Honeycomb isn't known.

Apple patent application reveals tiny audio jacks
Apple's developers has been shrinking the iPod with nearly every update, yet they aren't done. This week, AppleInsider has discovered a patent application that reveals even smaller audio jacks that could be used in future, tinier iPods. To understand how, we must discuss pogo pins and cantilever beams.
Contemporary audio jacks use cantilever beams, which extend into the cavity of the jack itself, and are pushed out of the way when a plug is inserted. The beams then make contact with the plug and allow data, audio and power to be transferred. They also take up a decent amount of space; too much in Apple's opinion.

FCC votes unanimously in favor of using whitespace for 'super WiFi'
Just as we suspected earlier this month, the Federal Communications Commission has voted unanimously (that's five yeas and zero nays, if you need a specific tally) in favor of using the unlicensed whitespace airwaves for what it calls a "super WiFi" of sorts. The vote accordingly also mandates a database mapping out TV channels and major wireless mic users (e.g. broadway theaters and sports leagues), with at least two channels set aside for minor users of wireless mics. FCC votes to allow use of white space wireless
The FCC today voted unanimously for using the white space frequencies between TV signals for unlicensed wireless access. The decision will let anyone develop devices that can operate at long range without having to get permission, giving them a form of 'super' Wi-Fi that could connect all of a user's devices even when well outside of the home. Dell, Google, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia and others have all expressed interest in the technology.

Apple Peel 520 iPod-to-phone case now shipping
Go Solar USA has began shipping its Apple Peel 520 case for the iPod touch in China. Introduced at the start of September, it promises to turn the iPod touch into a full-fledged smartphone. Walt Mossberg explores Paris with iPad only
Walt Mossberg, personal technology journalist for the Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital, posted a column yesterday about using an iPad on a "working vacation" to Paris.
Mossberg decided to forgo his usual laptop on a 10-day trip to Paris, relying instead on his iPad, a smartphone, and a small digital camera. He found the experiment to be a "pleasant success," noting that he had to carry much less weight, got better battery life, and had an instant-on computer. Apple to open first Spokane store on September 25th
Apple will launch its first retail store in Spokane, Washington this Saturday, opening the doors at 10AM local time. The outlet is based in the River Park Square shopping center along West Main Avenue, and should have regular hours of 10AM to 9PM Monday through Saturday, and 11AM to 6PM on Sunday. GTA TeleGuam has announced that the iPhone 4 will be available tomorrow, September 24th, on its mpulse wireless network. Those wanting a head start can reserve one now, though GTA's website does warn, "All phones are available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last."
Roland Certeza, GTA's executive vice president of sales, was all enthusiasm this week. Penny Arcade made a comic with the iPad
Most people seem to agree the iPad is a pretty great device for reading (although perhaps not the best, eh Amazon?). The debate still rages though about how suitable it is for making stuff. When it was first announced there was plenty of snark from bloggers like Paul Thurrott, who wrote:
"When you go out and about with just an iPad, you're sending a message that you're not going to contribute. You're just there to consume."

PlayStation Move accessories charge controllers, keep your pesky imagination in check
If there's anything Microsoft's Kinect has over the PlayStation Move -- neither seem to have a killer app -- it's that peripheral manufacturers (hopefully) won't be able to generate wave after wave of cheap plastic junk to wave in front of a camera. HTC, Motorola close gap with Apple in JD Power phone ranks
JD Power today published a second study of cellphone satisfaction in the US that showed Android having closed the gap in perceived quality with the iPhone. Apple still earned top marks from owners with an exact 800 score, but Motorola's Droid line has all but wiped out the earlier chasm, scoring 791. Its fellow Android competitor HTC has also pushed past the industry average for the first time to reach 781.

NYC, New Jersey experiment with iPhone transpo payments
New York City Transit, New Jersey Transit and the Port Authorities of both New Jersey and New York have begun a phone-based payment program, run in cooperation with Visa. The pilot initiative allows people with Visa payWave-equipped smartphones -- including iPhones -- to wave them in front of a special reader in order to pay for a bus, subway or train ride. Normally, people would have to buy and refill separate cards for similar convenience.

RealD to license ZScreen for HDTVs, bring cheap 3D glasses to the masses
Most who have seen their favorite content in 3D have seen the light, but still find it hard to look past the glasses. Any 3D glasses are worse than no glasses at all, but expensive 3D glasses make even less sense to most. So while all the consumer 3DTV glasses so far have been of the expensive active shutter variety (which keeps the price of the TVs more in line with the 2D versions), RealD announced at the 3D entertainment summit that it would license its ZScreen technology (pictured above) to 3DTV manufacturers. Mac 101: Use the keyboard to navigate a Grid from the Dock
When I first got my Mac, it came with all the standard applications found in the applications folder. I used to find that opening an application from the applications Grid, on the Dock, was much easier and quicker than opening an application through the Finder.
Gradually, over time, with more applications being installed on my computer, my applications Grid became larger and larger. Instead of seeing a small bunch of icons I could easily recognize and navigate, I literally had dozens of icons on my applications Grid. This made it very difficult to distinguish the one application I was looking for. It was like looking at a sea of multi-colored icons all blurring into one. Maybe you know what I'm talking about?

FloBox, FloBox Mini and Vital amp all include an iPad dock
It was only a matter of time before someone released a speaker system with an iPad dock, but there is more to Speakercraft's new lineup than a way to listen to music. The FloBox, its miniature version, and the Vital amp can also stream music via Apple's AirPlay, DLNA or Speakercraft's own Nirv system. The two FloBoxes also include a mini USB port to sync your i-device with with iTunes. The Vital 250 is only available in black and will sell for $699 when it hits in the forth quarter. iWork iPad apps gain export to Excel, PowerPoint
Apple has released v1.2 updates for the trio of iWork apps available for the iPad. Critically, Numbers documents can now be exported as Excel files, while Keynote presentations can be exported in PowerPoint format. All three apps -- including Pages -- have been updated with the ability to group and ungroup objects, as well as upload to a MobileMe iDisk or miscellaneous WebDAV services.

HP Slate shown on video, has built-in Ctrl-Alt-Del button
HP's long-delayed Slate 500 has surfaced in an unofficial video (below) with unique details of how it works. The 8.9-inch Windows 7 tablet has its own dedicated controls to make up for the lack of a true tablet interface in Microsoft's OS. It includes both a button to bring up an on-screen keyboard at any time as well as a reported "Ctrl-Alt-Del" button to load Task Manager or reboot the Slate after a crash.

PIRO's Windoro bot cleans windows Roomba-style
We all need a little more Roomba in our lives. PIRO's Windoro promises to do for windows what the Roomba does for floors, with a flat, autonomous robot free-roaming across a surface and cleaning it in the process. Of course, it's a little tougher to cling to a window than to crawl across carpet, so Windoro is a two part bot, connected to its reciprocal cleaning companion via neodymium magnets. Unfortunately it seems like it'd be a bit of a pain to get these two started and to switch windows -- for windows that don't open it would require two people, and for windows that do open it would still be pretty treacherous. AAPL hits new 52 week and all-time high
Apple's stock price has been reaching stratospheric heights lately, and today it may have even made it to the mesosphere.
A stock alert this morning showed AAPL at 288.04, which is a new 52 week high as well as the highest price the company's stock has ever reached.
Although we're getting close to October, the traditional month of stock market crashes, it's good to see that our favorite consumer electronics company is doing this well.

HP Slate prototype caught in the wild, booted to Windows 7
HP has done plenty of its own teasing of the HP Slate, but in-the-wild spottings are few and far between. Now our favorite YouTuber and yours, x313xkillax, has a video of an HP Slate prototype. The hardware looks similar to what we've seen before, though perhaps a bit further along than version Conecti.ca "reviewed" back in April. We're pleased with the boot time of the device and seemingly fine Flash performance, and x313xkillax calls the touchscreen very responsive, but as you can see in the video after the break, Windows 7 still isn't really designed for finger operation. Verizon chief: death of TV is real, cable bundles to go away
Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg broke from conventional TV provider thinking today by telling those at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference that he expected the Internet to kill cable bundles. He expected that bundles would still have "some life left" but that many younger buyers were simply dropping traditional TV entirely in favor of Internet access. He likened it to wired phone service, which might not be dead but is in the minority and has been largely replaced with cellphones.

Apple TV pre-orders ready to ship
We've received a number of tips this morning from readers who say that their credit cards are being charged for pre-ordered Apple TVs. That generally means that they're about to ship. Customers tell us that the charges began to show up overnight and into this morning.
The online Apple Store still lists the shipping time as 2-3 weeks. I haven't ordered one myself, but the Netflix feature alone makes it very tempting. Start looking for yours soon.

2011 iPad sales could reach 21 million, says analyst
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has substantially raised his iPad forecast for 2011, pushing it from 14.5 million to 21 million. Such is the tablet's success that it's in a position to outsell the Mac, the analyst argues. GooTasks syncs tasks from Google
We all know that trying to sync up tasks from your Google account to your iPhone / iPad can be a laborious, if not impossible, task! And if you don't, now you do. The only way to access Google tasks is through mobile Safari or another web browser. Even Google Mobile App will direct you to the web based version of Google tasks, via Safari. And, as it stands, there is no way to access Google tasks on the iOS Mail.app either, only notes can be synced through that.

Futuremarks 3DMark 11 verzögert sich
Im Mai hatte Futuremark die Version 11 seines Benchmarks 3DMark noch für das dritte Quartal 2010 angekündigt. Dieser Zeitraum neigt sich nun dem Ende und von der neuen Version fehlt noch jede Spur. European Commission lays out new broadband plan, reserves spectrum for mobile broadband
It's not quite the law of the land just yet, but the European Commission has just laid out some far-reaching new broadband rules that, if implemented, could have some wide ranging implications. Some of the basic rules were first announced earlier this year in the so-called Digital Agenda, including a mandate for basic broadband access across the EU by 2013, and a 30Mbps minimum by 2020. Perhaps most notably, however, is that the Commission has recommended that spectrum in the 800MHz band between 790-862MHz (being vacated as TV broadcasters make the switch to digital) be set aside for mobile broadband use by 2013. Dropbox updates iOS apps, announces App Directory
The Dropbox app for iPhone and iPad has been updated recently. There's a full UI redesign in there now that takes full advantage of the Retina Display, so your shared files will look better than ever. The iPad version has gained a landscape view, and the app will now finish uploads and downloads in the background. Dropbox also allows file caching now, so once you've viewed a file, you won't have to go back and in and re-download it again. I presume that means only while the app is running -- if you have to actually close the app for any reason, you might have to connect up to see the file again. Seit Apples Switch auf die Intel-Plattform erfreut sich Virtualisierungssoftware zum Betreiben von Windows-Programmen unter Mac OS X grosser Beliebtheit. Mit einem Marktanteil von über 70 Prozent ist Parallels der unbestrittene Marktführer auf der Mac-Plattform. Dies dürfte nicht zuletzt an einer aggressiven Entwicklungsstrategie liegen. Viereinhalb Jahre nach der Erstveröffentlichung liegt Parallels Desktop bereits in Version 6 vor.
Parallels Desktop 6 verspricht vor allem in zwei Bereichen signifikante Verbesserungen. Erstens soll die Integration von Windows in Mac OS X nochmals verfeinert worden sein. Apple raking in the mobile profits
While taking a look at the Fortune Magazine online tech blog i saw some comments by Canaccord Genuity about Apple profits in the mobile market. They are a head-turner.
Apple mobile profits are stunning, and even better when compared to the rest of the industry. The really interesting item is that Nokia, Samsung and LG combined sold about 400 million handsets worldwide for the first 6 months of the year, and together those 3 firms garnered 32% of the profits in that sector.

Netflix busted for using actors in crowd at Canadian launch event
Netflix certainly didn't have much trouble attracting interest in its Canadian launch today -- the country's waited long enough, after all -- but it looks like it nonetheless went a bit too far in its efforts to build up buzz at its press event. Apple offers 27in display updates, Windows Trackpad drivers
Apple has released several support updates, including an LED Cinema Display download for Macs. Windows users can download separate updates that combine software for the new display and the Magic Trackpad. The display update, designed for Apple's latest 27-inch IPS panel, adds an option to the System Preferences pane that allows the display to automatically adjust brightness as the ambient light changes. Users can also configure the sound preferences to use the display for the primary audio output.

Facebook: we're not trying to compete with Android or iPhone
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in a talk this evening hoped to address the persistent rumors of a Facebook-branded phone. He expanded on the original denials and stressed that the social network wasn't trying to build hardware or get especially deep integration. Facebook wants to be a platform and not the device itself, Zuckerberg said to TechCrunch.

Apple updates iWork for iPad
A couple of nice iWork for iPad updates are out on the store today bringing a boatload of new features.
Numbers, now at version 1.2, introduces improved exports, object grouping and ungrouping, and better hyperlinks, among other new features. Pages, also updated to version 1.2 provides WebDAV and MobileMe iDisk support, txt file compatibility and many performance enhancements. The third member of the iWork family, Keynote, has added new animations, the ability to group and animate objects, and export to PowerPoint 2009.
Pages, Numbers and Keynote cost $9.99 each on App Store. Updates are free.

Thieves steal $24K in merchandise from Illinois Apple Store
The Apple Store at Main Place shopping village in Naperville, Illinois (about 18 miles west of downtown Chicago) was burgled early this morning. Thieves broke the glass front of the store in the early hours and made off with approximately $24,000 worth of merchandise, according to police reports.

TUAW first look: JEOPARDY! for iOS
I'm not one to give up on hope. I've been trying out various incarnations of branded Jeopardy games since dinosaurs roamed the earth (I believe that T. Rex used an early version of Microsoft Windows before going extinct). The latest version to grace us is a US $1.99 mobile app, now available from App Store for iPhone and other iOS devices.
Duly licensed from Sony, this JEOPARDY! game (with mandatory caps and exclamation point, of course) brings the same branded detail as many of the previous versions while completely missing the point of what makes Jeopardy fun.

If there's a Photokina around, you can bet your bottom dollar that Sanyo will be there. Boasting a booth chock full of camcorders and pocketable cameras, we waded through to find three new Xacti camcorders (VPC-CG21, VPC-PD1 and VPC-GH3) on display alongside a simplistic new shooter, the VPC-E1500TP. Starting with the latter, this one brings just the basics in a fairly vanilla enclosure: a 14 megapixel CMOS sensor, 720p video, a 4x optical zoom, 3-inch rear touchpanel, 32MB of internal storage space, an SD / SDHC expansion slot, ISO range from 100 to 3200 and USB connectivity.
