Sprint gets first Mac-ready 3G/4G USB modem
Sprint on Tuesday began offering the 3G/4G USB 250U mobile broadband modem from Sierra Wireless. The hybrid modem is the first of its kind for Sprint to support Mac OS X and has a 180-degree rotating hinge for an obstruction-free fit even on notebooks like the MacBook Air. The modem also has an integrated GPS feature that brings navigation and mapping info when connected to Sprint's 3G network. Clear introduced the same modem last week under a different name.

AIR for Android app turns Nexus One into slot car controller (video)
AIR for Android, a Phidgets motor control, a slot car set, and a custom built LEGO housing for good measure -- if this project isn't meant for Engadget, we don't know what is! The premise is pretty straightforward: Grant Skinner uses his Nexus One to send accelerometer data to a desktop PC, which then sends it to a motor controller. US-based iPhone 4s start working, produce photos and videos
One of the iPhone 4 owners who received a unit early hasmanaged to get his unit activated with AT&T and has posted test photos and video from the phone's camera. Apart from validating the very high-resolution screen, the samples provide a more detailed impression of the image quality than a Czech leak from earlier. Photos from the camera show that it still behaves like a typical point-and-shoot outdoors, risking the possibility of blown-out highlights, but also show that the flash works and isn't as over-bright as on phones like the HTC Evo 4G.

For a limited time Electronic Arts has dropped the prices on 17 of their popular game titles for the iPhone and iPod touch. Nokia: pre-alpha release of MeeGo for handsets coming June 30th
We've already gotten an early peek at what's in store for MeeGo on handsets courtesy of some leaked UI guidelines, and it looks like folks now won't have to wait too much longer to try it out for themselves -- Nokia has confirmed that the pre-alpha release will be available on June 30th. S&P may downgrade Nokia's rating due to poor phone sales
Standard & Poor on Tuesday dropped its outlook on Nokia's credit rating from "stable" to "negative" due to its expected poor results. The stock indexer warned that Nokia's core phone business needed to regain more of its profitability over the next six months or else its credit rating could be downgraded within the next 12 to 18 months. It wasn't optimistic as it saw that Nokia was still in a "rather weak competitive position" for smartphones.

iPhone 3G users face upgrade question
Filed under: iPhoneI think somewhere Steve Jobs has flipped a switch that's quietly detonating all iPhone 3Gs. My trusty phone had decent battery time until a couple of days ago, when suddenly I had to scramble every few hours to find a power source. With all of my funds sunk into a move to Pennsylvania in a couple of weeks, an upgrade to the iPhone 4 just isn't possible at the moment, and a good many people are also facing the "upgrade or not?" question.
If you do have to hold onto your 3G for awhile, you have to deal with a secondary issue also confronted by original iPhone users last year with iPhone OS 3 -- is it worth upgrading to iOS 4?

No pre-order? AT&T won't have an iPhone 4 for you until June 29
The thinking all along was that there'd be an allocation of unreserved iPhone 4s in AT&T stores this Thursday for customers who didn't bother to (or couldn't) pre-order the phone ahead of time, but not so much. Turns out that the extra stock won't be arriving until June 29, at which point it'll be available on a first-come, first-serve basis (read: every man, woman, and child for themselves) both in stores and online. Of course, this is strictly an AT&T announcement -- Apple Stores and Best Buys are still possibilities -- but basically, there's no point in lining up on the 24th at your local AT&T shop unless you've got confirmation that a reserved phone is available for you. Apple preps California, Australia stores for iPhone 4 debut
Apple is opening two more retail stores in time for this week's iPhone 4 launch. The first, in Cerritos, California, will have an opening day-and-date with the Thursday iPhone rollout, to the extent of beginning sales at 7AM rather than a more standard 9 or 10AM, though only for iPhones at first. The shop is in the Los Cerritos Center, and will have regular hours of 10AM to 9PM Monday through Friday, closing an hour earlier on Saturday. Sunday hours are 11AM to 7PM.

AT&T pushes walk-in iPhone 4 sales to June 29
AT&T sparked controversy this afternoon by warning that it wouldn't have any iPhone 4 units at retail for walk-in purchases until June 29. Citing the 10 times higher pre-orders, it said only those who'd already ordered on June 15 will get theirs on Thursday. All others will have to wait the extra five days, when buyers will have to come in on a first-come, first-served basis.

Google on Android 2.2: 'feverishly working to get a final version out the door'
Considering Google's typically feverish pace in deploying new Android builds, we'll admit -- we kind of expected Android 2.2 Froyo to be released to retail Nexus Ones by now but no dice. AT&T 3G MicroCell now available in all markets
Completing a phased roll-out that kicked off back in April, AT&T has finally gotten around to launching its 3G MicroCell in all of its markets, giving the entire customer base some flexibility when "more bars in more places" doesn't happen to include your place. iPhone 4 starts arriving early, won't activate yet
Apple today surprised iPhone 4 buyers with word from some buyers that they're already receiving their phones. A day earlier than promised, some have either received their deliveries from FedEx or have received notice that theirs are on FedEx trucks for delivery. Toshiba presses for official SD cards with Wi-Fi
Toshiba on Tuesday kickstarted a forum to produce an official standard for wireless flash memory cards. The group's format, developed with help from Trek 2000, would give all SD cards built-in Wi-Fi and let them upload or download photos without having to use a card reader. It would expand on the concept pioneered by Eye-Fi and would allow camera-to-camera sharing along with more direct control over how photos are sent, improving on the power use compared to the "current solution."

Aw, suki suki now! Just look at that -- that friends, is a 32GB black iPhone 4 en route to its destination in Sunnyvale, California. But not just en route, it's actually on the FedEx truck for delivery. Borders bundles $20 gift card with Kobo, intros Apple app
Borders on Tuesday said it would bundle its Kobo eReader with a $20 gift card and double Borders Bucks. At the same time, the company has released a free app for both the Apple iPhone and iPad that will let users browse, search, buy and read its e-books. U.K. retailer Carphone Warehouse is warning customers not to queue up outside its stores for the iPhone 4 launch, citing low stock. SwitchEasy releases Reptile protective case for iPad
SwitchEasy has added to its line of iPad accessories with the release of Reptile, a new iPad protective case. Previously released for the iPhone 3G and 3GS, the new case guard is made from a GE Lexan polycarbonate exterior and soft polymer interior. Analysts renew call for Verizon iPhone; now by early 2011?
Two prominent analysts have again called for a Verizon iPhone in the near future, Barron's notes. Perhaps the most significant claim belongs to Barclays Capital analyst Ben Reitzes, who says that "checks" indicate production of a CDMA iPhone will likely begin in the fourth quarter of the year, with actual delivery taking place in early 2011. Estimates suggest that as many as 9 million Verizon iPhones could be sold that year.

Sonos today gave a preview of the Sonos Controller for iPad. The large-sized version shares much of the structure of the original iPhone app but takes advantage of the extra screen area to show more information at once. To enable international keyboards, select Keyboards from the general settings. Tap International Keyboards and then Add New Keyboard. Once you've made your selection, you'll notice a globe icon next to your keyboard's spacebar. In iPhone OS 3.1.3, you could tap that icon to switch from one keyboard to the next. It was kind of a hassle for those with several keyboards enabled.

Die 18-Meter-Statue des RX-78-2 Gundam sollte ja eigentlich nur kurz mal an die Erstausstrahlung der TV-Serie "Mobile Suit Gundam" vor 30 Jahren erinnern, aber nachdem das Monstrum letztes Jahr eine Weile in Tokio rumstand, hatten die Japaner es dann doch viel zu sehr ins Herz geschlossen, um es einfach schnöde abzubauen und einzulagern. Microsoft's just dropped details on its new Xbox Live family subscription plan. Starting in November, it will offer the Gold Family Pack, enabling up to four users to have Xbox Live Gold subscriptions, for $99.99 a year. It'll also debut the Family Center, a new menu accessible from the dashboard for customizing account settings. Apple on Tuesday revealed that it had sold three million iPads as of the start of the week. The figure comes just 80 days after the US-only launch of the tablet and shows the sales rate accelerating, as it had already passed two million in two months. New iTunes privacy opt-outs do not apply to location data
Even though people can now opt out of some iAd tracking data, this does not apply to location information, the LA Times writes. A closer look at the company's new privacy policy for the iTunes Store reveals that Apple has given itself the right to track the "real-time geographic location" of iPhones and other Apple handhelds. The company is further sharing the data with "partners and licensees," who can collect and save it.

iOS 4 users report problems with contacts, cellular data
Some serious issues have been affecting a portion of people upgrading devices to iOS 4, according to Apple's support forums. Perhaps the most vital involves cellular data, which some iPhone owners have reported as simply not working, whether on 3G or EDGE. Der zweiwalzige Bot ist rund einen Meter hoch, er wiegt etwa 15 Kilogramm und düst in seiner aktuellen Version mit bis zu 6,5 km/h durch die Gegend, wobei er Schwellen oder andere Hindernisse mit einer Höhe von etwa 1,5 Zentimetern überwinden kann - daran sollte Hitachi nochmal arbeiten. HTC bringt OS-Update für Desire und Legend
HTC hat ZDNet gegenüber bestätigt, dass die beiden Smartphones Desire und Legend ein Android-OS-Update von Version 2.1 auf 2.2, Codename Froyo, bekommen. Remember that chart that pointed out the differences between Google, Apple and Microsoft? Well, it's looking increasingly like Google is intent on filling any and all gaps in its portfolio. Those good old unnamed sources have been talking, originally to CNET last week and to the Wall Street Journal today, and disclosing Google's supposed intent to introduce its very own music store. This would initially encompass a web store where you can stream or download tracks, with a search tie-in that'll get your money into Google's pocket in the fastest possible way. Nintendo 3DS Grafik-Chipset: kein Tegra, sondern ein PICA200 (mit Video)
Eigentlich mag Nintendo ja nicht so gerne darüber reden, was denn nun genau für Bauteile in ihren Geräten stecken. Nun wissen wir aber, wer für die Grafik in der nächstes Jahr erscheinenden 3 DS sorgen wird: ein DMP PICA200 mit 200 MHz. Der kann beachtliche 15,3 Millionen Polygone pro Sekunde berechnen und dürfte damit ausreichend flott für die nächste Generation der DS ausfallen. Bisher war die Gerüchteküche immer davon ausgegangen, dass es NVIDIAs Tegra sein würde. Nach dem Break gibt es ein Video, allerdings ganz schnöde in 2D.

Adobe today started shipping Flash 10.1 for Mobile. The initial release is targeted at devices running Android 2.2 and, initially, will only work with the Nexus One. Half-Byte Loader erlaubt Doom auf der PSPGo (mit Video)

Mit dem Half-Byte Loader kann man auch auf den neueren PSPs (in diesem Fall der PSP Go) Homebrew installieren. Klar, dass da Doom nicht fehlen darf. Der Hack nutzt einen Exploit aus dem Demo von Patapon 2 und funktioniert auf allen PSPs, die mit einer Firmware ab 5.0 laufen. Wie immer ist natürlich Vorsicht geboten, aber das ist schon irgendwie verlockend. Mal sehen, wie lange Sony das noch durchgehen lässt.

We're big fans of Eye-Fi's wireless memory cards, which enable you to toss that card reader out the window and download all your pictures wirelessly. Apples neues mobiles Betriebssystem iOS 4 schließt neben den neuen Funktion auch zahlreiche Sicherheitslücken. Nun ja, eigentlich sind wir ja der Meinung, dass es wenig Dinge gibt, die so eindeutig zweidimensional sind wie Pacman und dabei auch denkbar ungeeignet für eine eigene TV-Sendung, aber da ist Bandai anscheinend anderer Meinung und hat auf der E3 (ohne dass es wirklich jemand mitbekommen hätte) mal eine erste Folge von Pacman TV in 3D gezeigt. Apple hat die vierte Version des iPhone-Betriebssystems iOS veröffentlicht. Das bis zu 396,3 MByte große Update steht ab sofort zum Download bereit. LG stellt Hybrid-Klimaanlage mit ein bisschen Solarunterstützung vor

LG hat eine Klimaanlage vorgestellt, die mit einem Solarpanel ausgestattet ist und daher den Öko-Titel "Hybrid" im Namen tragen wird. Mit Details hielt sie der koreanische Konzern leider in seiner vorliegenden Ankündigung nicht auf, bekannt ist nur, dass das Solarpanel bis zu 70 Watt produzieren kann. Dummerweise liegt der Verbrauch üblicher Klimaanlagen bei Volllast in der Gegend von 2000 Watt. Die neue Hybrid-Klimaanlage wird also - auch wenn sie im Verbrauch ein bisschen sparsamer ist als sonst üblich - nur einen kleinen Bruchteil ihrer Energie aus Sonnenkraft beziehen. Schade aber toll. Das ging schnell: Nur wenige Stunden nach offizieller Veröffentlichung von iOS 4 vermeldet das Dev-Team, das Baseband geknackt und somit einen Unlock möglich gemacht zu haben. Mit der Version ultrasn0w 0.93 lassen sich sämtliche Basebands seit der iPhone-Firmware 3.0 entsperren (04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01 für iPhone OS 3.1.3 und 05.13.04 für iOS 4.0). Für den Jailbreak, der Voraussetzung für den Unlock ist, gibt es bislang nur eine Vorabversion, die finale Variante wird in den kommenden Tagen erwartet. Orange senkt iPhone 3GS Preise

$149 WiFi-only Nook confirmed, 3G price dropped to $199 (update: official)
Turns out all our snooping was spot on with this one. We first spotted a simpler, cheaper Nook making its way through the FCC late last month, and then only last night we got tipped off to a $150 price point for the e-reader sans cellular connection. LG's BX580 network 3D Blu-ray player now shipping for $100 less than expected
Is there an HDMI 1.4-compatible Blu-ray player in your future? LG's BX580 wants to be your player of today. The device is now shipping, more or less falling in line with the "month or two" estimate we got back in May, but clocking in at $100 less than the $400 we'd expected it at. Sure it's listed on Amazon's page at $399, but add it to your shopping cart and (spoiler alert) it's actually just $299.86. Insignia's Infocast Internet Media Display, the Dash-aping Chumby frame, now available
A week back we got word that Best Buy house brand Insignia was moving in on Dash territory with the eight-inch, 800 x 600 Infocast Internet Media Display, and that it'd be releasing on June 20. Sure enough it's now available online, and is also sitting on a shelf at every local store we checked, meaning this is perhaps the quickest and easiest way to get your cuddle-free Chumby on. At $169 it's $30 less than the Dash, meaning it makes a little more sense than Sony's option, but whether or not it's actually good value depends on just how smart you need your alarm clock to be.

LG's solar hybrid AC unit probably won't do much to cool your power bill
Air conditioning that's 90 percent more efficient? Pshaw. How about solar air conditioning that powers itself on the sunniest days? Northrop Grumman wins contract to build US Army's long-endurance hybrid airship
Northrop Grumman's announced that it's won a contract from the United States Army to build its LEMV surveillance ship. The Army is building the ship specifically to assist troops in Afghanistan, and they are expected to go into use sometime in 2011. Northrop Grumman has been commissioned to build three of the ships, which can carry up to 2,500 pounds and hover 20,000 feet above sea-level with a top speed of about 34 miles per hour. The Army will pay NG 517 million dollars for the project.

Barnes and Noble Nook firmware version 1.4 now available
Barnes and Noble sure is busy today. If you're a Nook owner, you're going to want to get on the update they've just unleashed pretty quickly. Version 1.4 includes a couple of pretty important fixes -- including the much-need "go to page" feature, an extra large font size, and support for AT&T WiFi. Unlimited data option disappears from iPads, AT&T tells grandfathered customers not to worry
Even though AT&T's $30 unlimited data plan technically went the way of the dodo back on June 7, the company had assured 3G iPad owners that they'd be entitled to one last hurrah -- buy an iPad prior to the 7th and you'd be allowed to grandfather into the old plan, even if you didn't receive your purchase by the deadline. Chrysler's Peapod NEV killed in bankruptcy
Chrysler's Peapod neighborhood electric vehicle always seemed like more of an experiment than a profit-maker, and unfortunately idealism isn't too popular with creditors -- according to Edmunds, the Peapod was canceled in March as part of the company's bankruptcy proceedings. Apparently adapting the Peapod's button-cute design to federal safety standards was overly expensive, so Chrysler and new part-owner Fiat will convert the existing Fiat 500 to electric operation. The Peapod design and other assets are up for sale, so there's a chance someone else will pick up the pieces, and Peapod designer Peter Arnell may yet build a full-speed EV in the future, so we'll keep our eyes open.

California considers electronic ads on license plates, we consider never moving there

The Legislature of the state that brought you Brody Jenner and Spencer Pratt is now considering a bill which would allow the beginning of research into electronic license plates for vehicles. In the latest revision of its privacy policy, presumably updated for iOS 4, it revealed the company can anonymously track the "real-time geographic location" of devices and is free to share that data with "partners and licensees" as well. In a nutshell, that means Cupertino could potentially sell location data, but don't get in a tiff just yet -- the company says it will do so anonymously and for location-based services only.

Kinect for Xbox 360 now listed for $150... at Microsoft's own online store
Listen Microsoft, we know you've been wanting to stay absolutely mum on Kinect's price since its official E3 unveiling, even as GameStop and Walmart say $149.99. Included is the Kinect sensor itself, power supply cable, manual, and WiFi extension cable (huh?), and it shows up in our virtual shopping cart just fine. So, now that your own official online store is giving that price tag on a pre-order page, don't ya think this guy deserves something akin to a legitimate press release for its MSRP?

iOS 4 addresses long list of security vulnerabilities
Following the official debut of iOS 4, Apple has published a long list of security vulnerabilities resolved in the update. The Application Sandbox now prevents applications from accessing the user's photo library, preventing malicious software from tracking visited locations without authorization. The OS has also improved handling of TIFF, BMP, and JPEG images to protect against attacks.

Intel, FTC close to settling antitrust case
Intel and the US Federal Trade Commission tonight filed a joint motion to at least temporarily freeze the FTC's antitrust lawsuit against Intel. The request "opens a window" for the two sides to negotiate over a consent order that could settle the case. Neither faction is willing to discuss what the order would involve.

Google Apps phone-lock issues with iOS 4
Filed under: iPhoneIn a strange twist with what appears to be a security issue, users of Google Apps who set up their accounts using the Microsoft Exchange settings (aka ActiveSync) may find that their iPhones have been set to auto-lock in one minute.
I confirmed this after reading a comment from TUAW reader BigB who mentioned it in another post. Apparently this is due to the security certificates that Google uses with its Exchange servers. The servers can force security options on compatible devices, which your iPhone becomes once it is running

App developers declining offers from Microsoft, Google
Following reports suggesting Microsoft has been offering incentives to bring developers onto the Windows Phone platform, Chillingo has confirmed the practice and offered reasons for refusing. The developer, which has produced many top sellers on the App Store, has reportedly declined offers from both Microsoft and Google.

Kindle and Nook e-readers get massive price cuts

Intel's Westmere-EX Xeon chip may top out at 10 cores
Intel might scale back its plans for Xeon processors using its Westmere-EX architecture, a rumor may have confirmed today. Originally thought to have as many as 12 cores, a source now says it would peak at 10. What caused this wasn't mentioned by the PCWorld contact, but heat, power and size requirements are often what set back chip releases.

Black Eyed Peas track surpasses 1m downloads in the UK
The Black Eyed Peas' single I Gotta Feeling has set a new record for downloaded music, as the track has now been purchased by over 1 million customers in the UK. The single was first released a year ago, quickly reaching the top position on the local charts. With two weeks at number one, the song maintained a presence in the top 40 for a total of 33 weeks.

WWDC 2010: Brian Akaka of Appular
