YouTube wins video copyright case against Viacom
YouTube scored a historic victory today as it won a summary judgment (PDF) against Viacom in the media publisher's $1 billion lawsuit. The court determined that YouTube and its parent Google couldn't be held liable for piracy as they were protected by safe harbor terms under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Video sites are exonerated as long as they cooperate with producers to tackle copyright problems, the ruling found.

Intel quietly slips out faster Core i5, i7 mobile chips
Intel's roadmap leaks have come to pass this week as it has upgraded its mobile processors in a low key move. The Core i7 940XM is now Intel's fastest quad-core notebook chip at 2.13GHz. It can Turbo Boost to 3.33GHz, carries 8MB of cache, and still uses the same 55W power draw as the older 2GHz Core i7.

Google wins YouTube copyright case against Viacom
The Viacom copyright infringement case against Google and YouTube has been a long strange journey since it started, but it looks like the first major chapter is over: the federal court today ruled that Google falls under the "safe harbor" provision of the DMCA which protects service providers from liability for user content. Roughly, that means Google isn't liable for copyright infringement on YouTube in general: it can only be liable for infringing specific copyrighted works, and since YouTube pulls videos as soon as anyone complains, it can't get in trouble. Of course, Viacom isn't too happy about this decision and has vowed to appeal, but we think it makes sense -- otherwise Viacom could sue and win for things Google didn't

Wo bleibt das weiße iPhone? Stellungnahme von Apple
Walt Mossberg hat eins, wir kriegen es erstmal nicht: Die Rede ist vom weißen iPhone 4. In einer Stellungnahme schilderte Apple nun, dass die Produktion der weißen Geräte eine "größere Herausforderung als erwartet" darstellt und das weiße Modell deshalb nicht vor der zweiten Juli-Hälfte erhältlich sein wird. Für das schwarze iPhone 4 birgt dies keinerlei Änderungen, wobei auch hier für die meisten der Liefertermin auf den nächsten Monat fallen wird, da die erste Charge vollständig in den Vorbestellungen aufgegangen ist.

Android Market is down, showing zero apps
Look, we know that checking the Android Market for updates its a nervous habit during brief periods of downtime for many of us -- but for now, you're going to have to go back to chewing your nails or tapping your fingers on the table, because the Market's down. Well, that's only partially true -- you can still get into the Market app on your phone without any errors, you just won't see any apps in there, which renders it pretty useless by our estimation. Hang on, don't panic -- we imagine this won't last long.

Less than $189 million in Apple App Store profit to date?
In spite of the attention paid to it, and its dominance in the smartphone industry, the App Store still does not bring in much profit for Apple, an analyst observes. Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster comments that during his WWDC keynote earlier this month, Apple CEO Steve Jobs mentioned that $1 billion had been paid to developers during the App Store's lifetime. The company has meanwhile served over five billion downloads from a mix of both free and paid titles.

New Yorker confirms iPad magazine, enlists Adobe's help
The New Yorker confirmed late Tuesday that it was working on an iPad magazine app. The new magazine will use the same Adobe Digital Magazine platform that powers the pioneering app for Wired's edition rather than the Conde Nast equivalent being used for other magazines with the publisher. One WWD source justified it as noticeably superior Conde Nast's app, which is designed to translate relatively easily to other platforms.

iPhone 4 early shipments include some defective Retina displays

Apple: Weisses iPhone frühestens ab Mitte Juli
Gerade erst haben wir hier die Frage gestellt „Wann kommt eigentlich das weisse iPhone 4?“ - da veröffentlicht Apple eine Stellungnahme, wonach es noch bis mindestens Mitte Juli dauern wird, bis dieses Modell erhältlich ist. Und wir haben richtig geraten: Es gab tatsächlich Probleme in der Fertigung. Vorbestellen lassen sich die weissen iPhones aber noch immer nicht - auch wenn manche Stores inzwischen schon inoffizielle Listen mit Interessenten für diese Varianten führen.

So sieht es jedenfalls nach der ersten Halbzeit aus. Wenn man zum Ergebnis noch eine 1 „dranhängt“ hat man die Öffnungszeiten vom Telekom-Shop 4010 in Berlin. Denn dieser hat nach letzten Angaben mehr iPhone 4 Modelle bekommen, als Vorbestellungen eingegangen sind.
Wer also in Berlin oder Umgebung wohnt hat in dieser Nacht die Möglichkeit, kurz nach Mitternacht eines der begehrten neuen iPhone 4 pünktlich zum Verkaufsstart zu ergattern. Wir wünschen allen viel Erfolg dabei. Wie wir unseren Jungs in Südafrika auch viel Glück wünschen für die zweite Halbzeit.

Hulu may add CBS, Time Warner with paid service
Hulu is in talks with CBS and Time Warner to add their TV shows in time for the paid subscription service, a leak from within the negotiations may have given away today. While terms of the deal haven't been outlined in full, CBS would start supplying shows for the paid service by September, as the new TV season starts. Time Warner's staging wasn't outlined by the Bloomberg source.

White iPhones "more challenging" says Apple, unavailable until mid-July
Filed under: iPhoneWell, that's interesting -- Apple has just posted an official statement on its site that says the white iPhone 4s have been "more challenging to manufacture than expected," and therefore won't be available until late July. No further statement is given, but it looks like if you were waiting until you get a white version of the new iPhone, you'll have to wait a little longer. That also explains why you couldn't preorder that color -- they weren't actually made yet.

Folders in iOS 4 bring harmony to my app organization
Filed under: iPhoneNot long ago I talked about Starting from zero on the iPhone home screen, where I took everything off the first page of my iPhone screen (except for the camera).
With the release of iOS 4, I've been able to do something I like even better: one page for everything well, almost everything. Let me first explain what isn't on the home screen, and why.
There are some apps that I can't delete but never use; I put them into a folder called "Never" on the second page. There is also a folder called "Seldom" for apps that I want to have on the iPhone but almost never use. Ex

Android 2.2 Froyo source code available today
It's still not hitting the bulk of Nexus Ones as far as we can tell, but for what it's worth, Google has unleashed the source code for Android 2.2 today, which is a solid sign that the code's been bulletproofed to the Open Handset Alliance's satisfaction and is ready for deployment across a number of phones from different manufacturers and carriers. It's still ultimately up to a bunch of gatekeepers in suits to decide when various models will get the upgrade, but this is basically zero day -- so let the countdown begin.

Over 160,000 Android phones sold every day
Google's Andy Rubin during the Droid X launch today revealed that over 160,000 Android phones are sold every day. The tally is a huge jump from 100,000 each day in May and would theoretically see as many as 4.8 million Android phones go online every month. Various hardware builders like HTC and Motorola were moving just 60,000 per day as recently as February.

Tokyo Institute of Technology announces SSD-packing, 2.39 petaflop supercomputer
IBM has announced plans to start using SandForce SSDs in its enterprise machines, and now it looks like the Tokyo Institute of Technology is doing one better, working with NEC and HP to produce Tsubame 2.0. Motorola Droid X official, becomes Verizon's iPhone 4 rival
Verizon today officially took the wraps from the Motorola Droid X, its new flagship Android phone and its best hope of combatting the iPhone 4. It claims a larger 4.3-inch, 854x480 touchscreen and a 1GHz processor fast enough to support an eight-megapixel camera with 720p video recording and HDMI out. Like the Evo 4G, it will have its own Wi-Fi hotspot feature to share the 3G connection with as many as five other devices by itself.

Filed under: iPhoneAs expected, the tool-minded folks at iFixit have torn down an iPhone 4 and posted its inner workings for all to see. There are plenty of juicy high-res photos and details here.
The story of how they got their phone is even more interesting than what they found inside. Kyle was all set to hop a flight to Japan and wait in line at the Ginza Apple Store when pre-ordered iPhones started arriving early, saving him the trip. He and the rest of the team got right to work.

Belkin kicks out HDMI to Mini DP converter for iMacs
Belkin on Wednesday chased after the dorm room audience with the AV360, a new Mini DisplayPort adapter for the 27-inch iMac. Like the Kanex XD, it converts most any HDMI input, such as that of a PS3 or Xbox 360, into usable 720p video for the Apple all-in-one's Mini DP in/out jack. It carries over audio and accepts up to a native 1080p signal, although the iMac's resolution recognition will require lower.

Details emerge for Tesco, 3 UK iPhone 4 plans
UK supermarket chain Tesco has announced pricing for the iPhone 4, which is set to launch in the region on June 24th. Subscription plans begin at £20 per month for a 12-month contract, which includes 250 voice minutes, unlimited texts and BT Wi-Fi access, and 1GB of cellular data. At the top of three tiers is a £45-per-month plan, attached to a 24-month contract, but with unlimited voice. The cost of a phone itself also declines with more expensive plans; a 16GB model, for example, costs £349 under the £20 plan but only £19 under the £45 scheme.

Timex Global Trainer GPS watch now available exclusively at REI

Virgin Mobile USA to carry MiFi with prepaid data
Virgin Mobile USA today became one of the rare North American carriers to offer Novatel's MiFi with prepaid data. Much like its USB modems, Virgin's MiFi will only require data by the bucket rather than a recurring rate; users can get as little as 100MB of data for a short 10-day stint at $10 or as much as 5GB of data for a full month at $60. Apple has expanded on its original lawsuit against HTC by suing it again for additional patent claims. In addition to two patents already included in the original complaint but re-submitted due to errors, two previously unmentioned patents have now been factored in. Apple is opening five new retail outlets in Canada in the near future, the company says. Geographically, these are split relatively evenly between the eastern and western halves of the country. Eastern locations include the first-ever Apple Store in Quebec City, and another for Toronto, which already has several shops. In the west additions are being made to Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.

Munster rechnet vor: 29 Cent erhält Apple pro App

Canon patent application takes in-camera HDR to the pixel level
There's certainly cameras out there that offer in-camera HDR (or High Dynamic Range), but none that go quite as far as what Canon has detailed in a recently published patent application. Nokia changes Ovi Store app rules to revive interest
Nokia today reworked some of its rules and software to rekindle developer interest in the Ovi Store. The phone maker is responding to a long called for move is now letting individuals, rather than just companies, sign up as Ovi Publishers. Developers can also now have their apps signed for free instead of having to pay per app, and Nokia promises to cut in half the time needed for an app to be signed.

Well, this is not encouraging. The photo you're seeing above is our leader Joshua's iPhone 4 review unit, snapped by Ryan Block just moments ago. Ryan pointed out that there are some nasty scratches on the back of the phone. While we don't have any better photos of it at the moment, Josh told us that they're hard to see unless in bright light, but they look pretty notable to us for a five day-old unit made of Gorilla Glass. We'll get some better photos for you as soon as humanly possible.

iPhone cracks 18% of Euro smartphone market, hurts Nokia
Apple has managed to claim second place in the European smartphone market in less than three years, new data comScore found today. It has grown from scratch to 18 percent of the core five countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK) and has kept Microsoft, RIM and Google down to 13, 8 and 3 percent each. Nokia still has most of the share as of April but has seen much of its once-secure position slip away, as it has let enough of its most important market drop to reach a total of 58 percent.

Adobe makes Audition for Mac official
A Mac version of Audition is in development, Adobe has confirmed. Earlier this month, video showed the software running on a Mac, but without any apparent acknowledgment from the developer. The arrival of Audition could be important, as it will compete in some respects with other professional audio production tools, such as AVID's Pro Tools and Apple's Logic. Adobe will try to carve out a niche in broadcast and post-production work, a representative says.

Der neueste Hack funktioniert mit gejailbreakten iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G und der zweiten Generation von iPod touch. Whoa. Nokia's premier range of devices, the N Series, will bid adieu to the Symbian operating environment and go MeeGo full time after the introduction of the N8. Tesco Mobile announces cheapest UK iPhone 4 tariffs yet
You're not going to believe this, but someone actually bothered to turn up to the iPhone 4 launch with a bit of competitive spirit. Tesco Mobile, an MVNA riding atop O2's network, has busted out its idea of what represents good value for iPhone lovers' money, and it has put everyone else to shame. 1GB of data and unlimited texts come as standard (seems like O2's network can handle the load after all). Two 12-month options are available, at £20 ($29) per month for 250 minutes and £35 ($52) per month for 750 minutes, accompanied by the big spender platter of unlimited minutes and an almost free 16GB iPhone 4 for those willing to spend £45 ($66) over two years. Tja, manchmal hat es auch Nachteile, wenn man jedes Update gleich mitmacht: laut Heise sperrt das Update auf iOS 4 den Fussballübertragungsservice Liga Total von der Telekom. Betroffen sind davon iPhone 3G und auch das iPhone 3 GS. Laut Telekom sind davon aber nur Nutzer betroffen, die das Update auf iOS 4 bis gestern nachmittag gemacht haben, für sie soll es eine aktualisierte App geben, die bereits im App Store eingereicht sei. TomTom aktualisiert seine iPhone-Navigationslösung

We've seen the inside of the hardware for Samsung's Galaxy S, and now a Russian coder who goes by the name LeshaK is ready to take you down to the core of the software -- despite himself not actually having one of the phones. Schweizer Radio DRS direkt auf iPhone und iPad
Das Schweizer Radio DRS kann rechtzeitig zur Lancierung des neuen iOS 4 für das iPhone und dessen Multitasking-Fähigkeiten — eine Funktion prädestiniert für Internet-Radio — auch auf dem iPhone und dem iPad direkt auf der Webseite von DRS live gehört werden. Dazu wird man via Safari Mobile beim Link «Radio ein» auf den DRS-Webseiten direkt auf den mp3-Stream geleitet, welcher dann in Safari Mobile abgespielt wird. Bisher führte der Link wie auf dem Desktop zu einem Flash-basierenden Musik-Player, welcher den Live-Stream abspielte. Auch einzelne Beiträge können neu direkt via Stream-File in Safari-Mobile geöffnet bzw. abgespielt werden. Wie bekannt ist, wird Flash auf iOS-Geräten nicht unterstütz, deshalb baut man neu beim Radio-DRS auf «HTML5», wie es in einer Mitteilung heisst — wobei die Streams eigentlich nichts mit HTML5 zu tun haben.

HP macht mit Schul-Netbook dem OLPC Konkurrenz

iPhone 4 teardown confirms 512MB of RAM, unique parts
A quick dissection of the iPhone 4 by iFixit has discovered that it theoretically has performance as least as good as an iPad. The already-known A4 processor should run at the same 1GHz clock speed as seen in the Apple tablet, in spite of the smaller size, but with 512MB of memory should be better with multitasking. Whether Apple has quietly underclocked or otherwise detuned the A4 isn't known, but early benchmarking has suggested it's faster than an iPhone 3GS but not as fast as an iPad in practice.

iPhone sync problems after iTunes update traced to leftover plugin
Filed under: Troubleshooting, iPhoneIn case you are on the road to an iOS 4 update (and be careful), you might want to double check your work. Remember, first you have to update iTunes to 9.2, which will then allow you to download the iOS 4 update.
After I updated iTunes, I went in to make some changes to what I had synced and take off some podcasts that I don't listen to and video I don't really watch. After making changes and clicking apply, I got this error:
"iPhone cannot be synced. A duplicate filename was specified."

EVO 4G gets 802.11n WiFi by changing two lines of code
The EVO 4G has a lot of weight in the smartphone arena thanks to WiMAX and that 4.3-inch screen, but though its Broadcom BCM4329 silicon also technically supports 802.11n WiFi over 2.4GHz, the protocol was disabled for some reason. Mercedes Benz SLS E-Cell Prototyp hat 526 PS, soll 2013 in Produktion gehen

Mercedes Benz kommt nun auch mit einem Elektro-Supersportwagen um die Ecke. Noch ein Prototyp, aber es macht Hoffnungen auf eine Newtonmeter-reiche Zukunft. Der SLS E-Cell basiert auf dem SLS AMG und hat satte 526 PS. Er verfügt über vier Motoren (für jedes Rad eins) und ein Batteriearsenal, das 480kW an Saft geben soll. Eine weitere Besonderheit: das 10-Zoll-Infotainment-Panel in der Mittelkonsole. Ein weiteres Bild nach dem Break und 2013 soll der Wagen sogar in Produktion gehen.

Adobe erzielt Rekordumsatz im zweiten Quartal

iOS 4 Jailbreak: Pwnage Tool 4.01 erschienen
Für diejenigen, die das Update auf iOS 4 nicht abwarten konnten und nun vor dem Problem eines erneuten Jailbreaks stehen, sicherlich eine gute Nachricht: Das Dev-Team veröffentlichte vor wenigen Stunden eine neue Version des bekannten Pwnage-Tools. Das Pwnage-Tool 4.01 kann aber nicht alle Geräte problemlos jailbreaken: iPhone 2G, iPod touch und iPod touch 3G werden von der aktuellen Version nicht unterstützt, teilweise auch wegen der fehlenden Unterstützung von iOS4. Für das iPhone 3GS gelten indes Sonderregeln: Handelt es sich bei dem Gerät um ein iPhone mit altem Bootrom, so kann das Pwnage-Tool damit umgehen. Bereits vor einigen Wochen tauchte ein Video auf, in dem Adobes Audio-Recording-Lösung Audition in einer Mac-Version zu sehen war. Die Erkenntnisse: 512 MB RAM, ein 1 GHz ARM Cortex A8 Prozessor (der gleiche wie im Samsung Wave S8500), chemisch verstärktes Gorilla-Glas als Frontpanel. Plus-Symbol und alternative Screenshots: So erkennt man die "echten" iPad-Apps
Die in der App Store-Einzelansicht unter dem Punkt "Voraussetzungen" angezeigte Kompatibilitätsbeschreibung von Programmen sorgt immer wieder für Missverständnisse. Wenn hier geschrieben steht, die Anwendung sei kompatibel mit "iPhone, iPod touch und iPad", so bedeutet dies keinesfalls, dass die Bildschirmdarstellung der betreffenden Anwendung auch für das iPad optimiert wurde. Die Aussage bezieht sich lediglich darauf, dass das Programm auch auf dem iPad ausgeführt werden kann, meist jedoch als Emulation im verkleinerten iPhone-Fenster.
Wer sich sicher sein will, dass die Anwendung für das iPad optimiert wurde, muss darauf achten, dass eine der beiden folgenden Voraussetzungen erfüllt ist:

Das iPhone 4 in Einzelteilen
Das neue iPhone 4 kommt in diesen Tagen auf den Markt und iFixIt hat wie üblich die Gunst der Stunde genutzt und das Gerät erst einmal in Einzelteile zerlegt. Zuvor wurde das iPhone 4 einer Software-Diagnose unterzogen, die aber nicht ermitteln konnte, mit welcher Taktrate der A4-Prozessor des iPhone 4 arbeitet. Beim iPad sind es 1,0 GHz, beim iPhone 4 muss hingegen weiter spekuliert werden. Der Bustakt liegt laut "Checkup" bei 100 MHz.

In a shocking turn of events, tonight's Jimmy Kimmel Live (12:05 am Eastern on ABC) will be an unexpectedly 'very special' episode. As seen in the clip below, and as reported on the show's Facebook page, a freak power outage took out the studio cameras and production control room -- leaving Jimmy to improvise a camera setup using his MacBook Pro instead. Verizon's Droid Eris goes on permanent vacation
You might have figured that the recent update to Android 2.1 would've given Verizon's Droid Eris a few months of additional shelf life, but alas, it was not to be; the phone is no longer available from Verizon's online store, and we'd assume that any remaining inventory in the field will dwindle to nothingness in the coming weeks. FCC approves AT&T's buyout of rural Verizon licenses
The FCC today greenlit AT&T's nearly $2.4 billion buyout of some Verizon wireless spectrum. A unanimous vote by all five commissioners ruled that the buyout, prompted by an FCC requirement that Verizon sell 79 of its frequency holdings after acquiring Alltel, didn't pose a competitive risk. It argued in turn that there were "public interest benefits" to AT&T taking over the discarded frequencies.

Intel's X25-M and X25-V SSDs now stocked on Best Buy's shelves
Best Buy selling some new hard drives may not exactly sound like news, but it is when the drives in question are Intel's X25-M and X25-V SSDs, which just so happen to be the first SSDs that Best Buy has ever stocked on its store shelves. The first few reviews of the iPhone 4 have arrived this evening and are largely positive on the phone but critical of the network. USA Today's Ed Baig describes the phone as "the one to beat" despite Android and said that most of the limitations were now down to AT&T, whose network still drops calls in congested areas. He considers FaceTime one of its best selling points and, in spite of the limitation to Wi-Fi and (currently) other iPhone 4s, a worthwhile feature. Two days without an iPhone
Filed under: iPhoneLast week I went and did it. I reserved the new iPhone. I'll pick it up Thursday morning. To keep the purchase price cheap, I sold my old one to Nextworth, one of a few firms that gives good deals on used electronics. Google today took Google Voice out of its test phase and made it available to all US residents. The previously invite-only service is normally free and gives users a virtual phone number that can be linked both to regular phones and to the Internet. Gourmet magazine to return as iPad app

Gourmet magazine closed up shop late last year, but the publisher is getting ready to bring the mag back -- as an iPad app called Gourmet Live. Etymotic ships promised earbuds, widens custom fitting
Etymotic on Tuesday began shipping a number of headsets introduced at CES. This includes the hf3 headset for the iPod, iPhone and iPad, the etyBLU2 Bluetooth and Etymotic's entry-level MC-5 earphones and MC-3 headset. At the same time, the company made its Custom-Fit Earmold Program available for all of its headphones and headsets, letting users get special eartips modeled just to their exact designs.
