Auch wenn die Weltwirtschaft momentan nicht die besten Aussichten für Spekulanten bietet: Wer die richtigen Produkte kennt, kann immer noch viel Geld machen. Motorola macht Gewinn - aber weniger Umsatz

Apple number one in Europe's education market
Apple continues to broaden its grip on European education computer sales, Gartner confirmed today.
According to the statistics for the second calendar quarter of 2008, Apple remains the number one PC manufacturer in the education segment across Europe, a position its held for eight successive quarters. In fact, Apple sold 19.2 per cent of all CPU's sold in the sector - including servers.
The company also remains the leading manufacturer in the UK - eclipsing Dell - for notebooks and now also desktops, holding 17.3 per cent of UK education marketshare, the analysts said.
These figures are simply a continuation of good news for Apple. In May, NPD revealed that two-thirds of laptops costing $1,000 or more and sold across US retail shops are Macs - 66 per cent.
The situation is very similar in the US, where Apple surpassed Dell as the number one supplier of portables to US high

Microsoft meldet Verdopplung der 64-Bit-Vista-Nutzer
Seit März hat sich laut Microsoft die Anzahl der PCs mit der 64-Bit-Version von Windows Vista verdoppelt, die auf Windows Update zugreifen. Der Anteil neuer PCs mit 64-Bit-Vista stieg von März bis Juni in den Vereinigten Staaten von 3 auf 20 Prozent. Photoshop Express erhält neue Online-Funktionen

Firewire speed set to increase four-fold
The group behind development of FireWire, the IEEE, has approved the new IEEE 1394-2008 specification that gives support for better bandwidth of up to 3.2Gbps.
In an attempt to maintain compatibility between different evolutions of FireWire, the revised specification combines and incorporates all previous IEEE 1394 standards developed since 1994.
The standard provides specifications for a high-speed serial bus which supports both asynchronous and isochronous communication and integrates well with most IEEE standard 32-bit and 64-bit parallel buses. More than 500 million IEEE 1394 ports have been produced since the standard was first published in 1995.

Upgrade season: Apple products enter upgrade cycle
If you plan shopping for a MacBook, MacBook Pro or any iPod, then you need to move fast - Apple is running down available stocks.
The company is warning its products will be in short supply, telling resellers it has begun reducing production of its laptops and iPods.
Apple is even advising resellers to get a few weeks worth of stock in to deal with the supply problem.
We've been anticipating new iPods and MacBooks for some time now, and believe plans to introduced the all-new laptops were delayed when Intel was unable to manufacture its new 45-nanometre Centrino 2 chips (expected to power the new range) to schedule.

Microsoft bungles UK imaging competition
Nikon has withdrawn its sponsorship of a Microsoft online photo competition in which photographers end up with no attribution for the images entered into the race.
The competition - 'Iconic Britain' - requires competitors to find images they think are iconic online using Windows Live Image Search.
These image searches must be submitted to the competition, where they will judged by a panel that was originally to include Simon Coleman, General Manager, Imaging Division of Nikon UK, Brian Blessed, and Joanna Lumley.
However, Microsoft gives no attribution to the images that appear in the competition, driving some photographey groups to recommend suing Microsoft, and, as mentioned, Nikon has withdrawn its support.

Börse bestraft Garmin trotz guter Quartalszahlen
Garmin hat gestern die Zahlen für das zweite Quartal des Geschäftsjahres 2008 vorgelegt und damit die Börsianer enttäuscht. Zwar konnten der Umsatz von 742 auf 911 Millionen Dollar und der Gewinn von 214 auf 256 Millionen Dollar gesteigert werden, die Analysten hatten aber mehr erwartet. Die Börse reagierte aber vor allem angesichts der gesenkten Erwartungen für die kommenden Quartale verärgert. Garmin schraubte die Prognose für das Gesamtjahr von 4,5 auf 3,9 Milliarden Dollar Umsatz herunter.

New MacBook for Back to School Period?
As we previously mentioned it, the release of Intel Centrino 2 platform will push Apple to update its notebook offer soon, and especially the MacBook and MacBook Pro. According to Apple Insider, Apple is indeed preparing such release. They sent information to distributors recommending preparing stocks because production rate will be low during the summer. This warning is also targeting iPod models, but not the MacBook Air, being a quite special product by itself. So, this information confirms our previous reports, and if Apple is preparing the release of new MacBook, MacBook Pro, iPod and iMacs, the main question remaining, especially for MB and MBP: will the shape and the design be changed?

SPSS steigert Umsatz und Gewinn
SPSS, Spezialist für Data Mining und Statistik-Software, hat seine Geschäftszahlen für das zweite Quartal sowie für das erste Halbjahr 2008 bekannt gegeben. Sony kündigt Laptop mit Hybrid-Grafik an
Sony hat mit dem Vaio Z570 eines der ersten Centrino-2-Notebooks angekündigt, das neben einer Onboard-Grafik von Intel auch mit einer Grafikkarte von Nvidia ausgestattet ist. Sony bezeichnet diese Technik, die auch mit Grafikkarten anderer Hersteller funktioniert, als Hybrid-Grafik. Im Akkubetrieb nutzt das Notebook den sparsameren Grafikchip von Intel, mit angeschlossenem Netzteil wechselt das Gerät zur leistungsstärkeren Nvidia-Grafik. Über einen Schalter kann der Anwender während des Betriebs und ohne Neustart auch von einer Grafik auf die andere umgeschalten.

TurboSIM are Back
Several users probably remember TurboSIM, those cards making possible to use first generation iPhone on non exclusive carrier.

iPhone 3G Shortage to End on August 21st?
We have received confirmation that the Apple Premium Resellers will be able to distribute the iPhone 3G from August 21st. This will also be true for other large consumer electronics distributors. Ladeadapter für iPhone 3G vorbestellbar
Der schwedische Hersteller Ridax nimmt Vorbestellungen für einen Ladeadapter für das iPhone 3G an. Durch Änderungen bei der Anschlussbelegung können viele für ältere iPod-Modelle ausgelegten Ladestationen und -anschlüsse nicht mehr genutzt werden, der Ridax-Adapter verspricht hier - allerdings nicht ganz günstige - Abhilfe: Wer es ganz eilig hat, kann sich für 45 Dollar den Stecker ohne Plastikhülle bereits Ende August zusenden lassen und bekommt Ende September die Hülle nachgeliefert. Das komplette Produkt soll ab Ende September für 40 Dollar lieferbar sein.
Wir empfehlen wenn möglich noch ein wenig zu warten, in den nächsten Wochen werden sicher günstigere Alternativen auf den Markt kommen.

Chinese HD-DVD Format Aiming to Compete with Blu-ray.. in China
During the war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD, supporters of the latest format started discussing with Chinese manufacturers to convince them to join the HD-DVD side. Couple of weeks afterwards, a new high definition format was announced, the CH-DVD very similar to the HD-DVD for both media and hardware. If Toshiba dropped the HD-DVD, Chinese did not want to stop the development of their HD copy, nor pay royalties to Sony nor support the financial cost of modifying their production lines.
The CH-DVD will have a business life, dedicated to the Chinese market, large enough to be juicy for promoters. The name will also change from CH-DVD to CBHD. However, there is a major problem for manufacturers; there is currently no Hollywood majors ready to accept another HD video format adventure, considering the history of this country regarding illegal copy business and lack of action to fight against counterfeit industry.

The French website Hardware.fr released an deep analysis of CUDA, the well known forthcoming parallel computing solution from NVidia, aiming to take advantage of the unused processing power of the GPU.
AS expected from the first public beta version, the technology is powerful and delivers performance gain ranging easily from 7 to 14 fold (depending on the graphic card and GPU, and on applications), when compared to the processing power of a Core 2 Duo CPU. Of course, CUDA does not speed up all applications, but software coded to benefit from this technology will have their performance level dramatically raised up leaving competitors in the dust. Portugal signs up for 500,000 Intel Classmate laptops
Looks like Intel's clearing out all its Classmate inventory in preparation for that new model -- it just inked a deal with Portugal for 500,000 of the chubby gray laptops. Ridax first company to overprice iPhone 3G charging adapter
Filed under: CellphonesAlthough the 30-pin Dock connector in the iPhone 3G looks the same as it has since it was introduced in the 2G iPod, it's different in one important (and maddening) way -- it doesn't support charging the older FireWire charging pins, only the newer USB method. That means a whole host of older chargers and docks don't work with the iPhone 3G -- and it also means that we'll be seeing a lot of adapters like this one from Ridax make the scene. T-Mobile 3G service coming October 1 to 27 markets

We were already pretty sure this would be happening, but it's looking real now, if 8.5 x 11-inch pieces of paper taped to a window is any indication: T-Mobile is rolling out its 3G service on October 1 to 27 select cities. The above poster was spotted by TmoNews "outside a meeting" and, as you can see, it says, "10.1.08 3G is Coming." As far as those launch cities, we have a handy little list for you after the break. By the way, it's entirely possible T-Mobile 3G is already live in your market, though, so don't let this confuse you too much.
