$10 Indian laptop to actually cost $100, anyone surprised?
Filed under: LaptopsCome on, you didn't really believe that a $10 laptop was even remotely possible, did you? Yeah, didn't think so -- and unsurprisingly, that project sponsored by the Indian government to develop a low-cost laptop actually has a price target of $100, not $10. Chalk another one up to bad transcription, we suppose, although getting the price of a reasonable machine down to $100 won't be all that easy, either -- any bets on where the final price of this thing ends up?

Für viele Nutzer ist es ein Ärgernis, dass man aus Versehen oder aus einem anderen Grund die Hoch- bzw. Feststelltaste immer mal wieder dauerhaft aktiviert. Mit einer externen Tastatur wird dies dann nicht einmal über eine eigene Leuchtdiode angezeigt. Und nicht nur beim Programmieren ist der Unterschied zwischen Groß- und Kleinschreibung gravierend. Apple with PA licenses ARM technology for mobile devices?
Rumours claiming Apple has reached a licensing deal with ARM continue to intensify following the latter firm's financial results announcement today, when management revealed an extensive multi-year architectural licensee has reached a deal with ARM.
Naturally, ARM management refused to disclose just who the new licensee actually is, beyond describing it as a "leading handset OEM", adding "which is developing its roadmap for mobile computing devices."

GamePark's GP3X leaked in spy shots, called the 'Wiz'

Apparently, a leaked shot of GamePark's next iteration of the GP2X -- the GP3X (not to be confused with the Pandora project) -- has gone and gotten itself leaked onto the interblogs. According to a post on GP2X News, the new system (which is being called the "Wiz") isn't set in stone, but will contain some form of a system-on-a-chip, and apparently will allow GP2X emulators to run after a bit of recompiling. Journalisten klagen über Internetzensur in China
Anlässlich der bevorstehenden Olympischen Spiele in Peking haben sich Journalisten über die strenge Internetzensur in China beklagt. Entgegen den Zusagen der chinesischen Regierung hätten sie auch im Pressezentrum und den Sportstätten keinen uneingeschränkten Zugang zum Internet. Vielmehr seien viele Internetseiten nicht zugänglich, zum Beispiel die Website von Amnesty International oder Seiten, in deren Adresse das Wort "Tibet" auftaucht. Auch Reporter ohne Grenzen (ROG) kritisierte, dass seit gestern Seiten der Deutschen Welle, chinesische Angebote der BBC und Berichte der Hong-Konger Tageszeitung Apple Daily sowie der taiwanesischen Liberty Time wie auch die Site von ROG selbst nicht mehr aufrufbar seien.

China setzt weiter auf modifizierte HD-DVD
Die HD-DVD ist zwar von Toshiba und der Filmindustrie aufgegeben worden, doch in China soll sie als China Blue High-definition Disc (CBHD) weiterleben. Universal Music launches LostTunes music store
Universal Music has launched a service to compete with iTunes, called Lost Tunes, which is available now in the UK.
Naturally, Universal isn't presenting the service as an iTunes threat, and, to be fair, its focus isn't on selling music to everybody. Instead, the new Universal service offers extremely rare single and album tracks from the labels extensive music back catalogue - better still, songs are being sold in MP3 format at a (relatively) impressive 320kbps - so high quality, near lossless audio downloads of tracks you just can't find elsewhere. And all tracks work on any platform, and nearly all devices.

Bundesregierung beschließt Gesetzentwurf zu Telefonwerbung
Das Bundeskabinett hat heute den Entwurf eines Gesetzes zur Bekämpfung unerlaubter Telefonwerbung und so genannter Kostenfallen im Internet beschlossen. Verstöße gegen das bestehende Verbot der unerlaubten Telefonwerbung können künftig gemäß dem neuen Gesetzentwurfs mit einer Geldbuße von bis zu 50.000 Euro geahndet werden. Außerdem wird im Gesetz klargestellt, dass ein Werbeanruf nur zulässig ist, wenn der Angerufene vorher ausdrücklich erklärt hat, Werbeanrufe erhalten zu wollen. So wird verhindert, dass sich Anrufer auf Zustimmungserklärungen berufen, die der Verbraucher in einem völlig anderen Zusammenhang oder nachträglich erteilt hat.

Garmin's Nuvifone delayed until early 2009

All photos features a White iPhone 3G model, but it might well be because it is easier to spot the defect than on a Black model. If you look carefully it looks like the plastic case broke under pressure along a more solid compartment located inside the device. This is typically something that can happen when carrying its iPhone in a pocket, especially in the back pocket of trousers. Gores Group kauft Siemens Enterprise Communications

IBM kritisiert Sicherheitsforscher
IBM hat heute die Ergebnisse seines X-Force-Halbjahresberichts 2008 bekannt gegeben. Demnach erfolgten 94 Prozent aller browserbasierten Internetattacken innerhalb von 24 Stunden nach der öffentlichen Bekanntgabe einer Schwachstelle. We can't blame you if you missed it, but Dell's latest leaked PowerPoint had one little gem tucked away near the end of the 31 slide deck. No, not the Coolslice homeslice, rather the Pocket Projector. Weighing just 1.1 pounds, this LED projector is either incredibly small, or that's a Texas-sized coffee mug either of which could be true in Dell country. Asus on Apple Mac mini attack
Asus has taken another attempt at Apple, introducing the Windows XP-powered Mac mini alternative, the ASUS Eee Box.
Small, quiet and equipped with an Intel processor, the Eee Box costs just £199 (UK), around $300 (US), and ships later this year (in the UK, at least).
The Eee Box comes with the option to VESA mount on the back of LCD displays, for "the ultimate minimalist space-saving solution".
There's touch sensor buttons and the company has clearly paid a little thought to design, smooth curves and its paperback-thin construction could make this interesting to floating Mac switchers, scared to leave Windows.
Though the choice of XP says a great deal about the current situation for that OS. And there's a Linux version to follow

Erst gab es für Canon-, dann für Hewlett-Packard- und jetzt für Lexmark-Drucker eine Aktualisierung der Druckertreiber für Mac OS X 10.5. Something Special in our Future Macs?
According to Apple Insider our future Macs could feature something special on the motherboard which will make them different than other PC, not being 100% Intel-based anymore.
This would be based on a chipset but the website does not provide any details. If we look at the opportunity, Apple could either get a specific chipset from NVidia or any other chipset manufacturers (SiS, etc.), or developed its own solution, an expensive and potentially dangerous way. The latest option has advantages and disadvantages:

Gerüchte: iPod nano im Querformat & iPod touch 2
Sieht so der nächste iPod nano aus? Unsere Kollegen von der iLounge vernahmen Gerüchte, nach denen der iPod nano mit der nächsten Aktualisierung ein größeres Breitbilddisplay erhält und weiterhin in bewährter Weise über ein neben bzw. unter dem Bildschirm angebrachtes Click Wheel bedient wird. Böse Zungen sehen bereits einen neuen iPod nano im "Zune-Look".
Auch die Hinweise auf eine anstehende zweite Generation des iPod touch werden Konkreter. In der bereits an Entwickler verteilten Version 2.1 der Systemsoftware für das iPhone und den iPod touch wurden Hinweise auf einen "iPod2,1" gefunden. Unter dieser Bezeichnung dürfte relativ sicher ein neuer iPod touch veröffentlicht werden, das aktuelle Modell läuft Apple-intern als "iPod1,1", andere iPods dagegen tragen lediglich Hardwarenummern ganz ohne einen Zusatz wie "iPod".

Walkers swallow RFID pills for science
