Telefonica: 300,000 iPhone 3G pre-orders
Dow Jones reports that Telefonica SA has received 300,000 pre- registrations in the United Kingdom and Spain to buy the iPhone 3G. O2 has posted its iPhone 3G pricing for Pay & Go customers in the United Kingdom. It's an update and shipping forecast kind of a day, with Adobe introducing a new and improved CS3; Microsoft shipping its latest batch of (delayed) Mac software updates; news that Spore ships September 5 and Microsoft dragging its feet over being good under the DOJ anti-trust thing (gosh, is that still dragging on? Why not just split the company?)
Anything else? Not a whole heap really, other than some strange excitement that O2 in the UK may let iPhone buyers pre-agree their contract in early July (but not get the phone until later). Coldplay smash US/UK iTunes sales records
UK act Coldplay seems set to smash US iTunes album sales records this week. Hits Magazine suggests the band's new album, Viva La Vida, sold over 275,000 copies in the US in the most recent week, overtaking the previous record held by Jack Johnson. The album also sold in excess of 700,000 copies in US retailers.
Apple has been engaged in a Coldplay-focused iTunes campaign, which has helped raise the profile of the Chris Martin-fronted act. That Coldplay occupy the number one album slot on both sides of the Atlantic also illustrates the growing ability of Apple as a power to help create success for bands.
Coldplay's success isn't unexpected. As reported earlier this month, the new Coldplay album also became the best-selling album pre-sale ever released in the history of iTunes.

Apple not yet green enough - Greenpeace
While it excels in some areas, Apple needs to improve in terms of the energy used in computer manufacture and needs to deliver much improved global e-waste schemes, according to the latest Greenpeace report.
It's not all bad news for Apple - the company is one of the two best firms in terms of energy efficiency in its products, with all of them meeting and, in many cases, exceeding Energy Star requirements. However, Apple missed a big chance to advance its score by not improving the environmental performance of the new version of the iPhone, Greenpeace notes.

iPhone users, rejoice - Apple’s on the edge of shipping iPhone Software 2.0, meaning the upgrade looks set to reach your mobile this month.

Treo 800 spy shot madness starts again with new blurry goodness

So we've had blurry "Treo 800" pictures that turned out to be the Centro, others that turned out to be just about nothing, and now this one that is making the rounds in super-blur fast-mo. Make your MacBook Air Superdrive universal
Apple is recognized to lock its products to a specific use, the last act of meanness is the SuperDrive sold for MacBook Air. This is just a simple DVD USB2 auto-powered external engraver, however Apple could not stop themselves from restricting its use to only the MacBook Air.
A few months ago (cf news of the 15-02-2008), we dismounted SuperDrive in order to know the references of the mechanics. Our doubts are now confirmed, the problem is not a specific firmware of the Optiarc engraver, but bridge PATA to USB2. It is thus a dedicated do-it-yourselfer to make his external SuperDrive universal by replacing this bridge by another, even though this replacement bridge costs only $9.-.

Adapter wars
Apple has fitted on all the mother boards of Mac Pro,s two additional SATA connectors intended to connect optical peripherals to this standard the day when they will have the need.
We have more than once used these to connect a SATA engraver or more recently two Velociraptors.
In the PC world, there exist adaptors (that fit into the PCI-Express) with two SATA cables. But one could not install them on Mac Pro, the SATA cables are too short.
Last year, Newer produced a product compatible with our machines which was relatively unnoticed. Very recently, Sonnet announced a product more or less identical, marketed at $29,95. Newer thus relaunched their product but now priced at $24,95.

Blackberry Bold release date delayed?

Mit ELENA will die Bundesregierung eine neue zentrale Speicherung von sensiblen Daten der Bundesbürger einführen. Bei ELENA handelt es sich um einen elektronischen Einkommensnachweis. Mit dessen Einführung geht die zentrale Speicherung der Einkommensdaten der gesamten deutschen abhängig beschäftigten Bevölkerung einher. Symbian gehört Nokia und wird Open Source
Auf dem hart umkämpften Mobilfunk-Markt gibt es wieder einmal interessante Bewegungen. Coldplay smash US/UK iTunes sales records
UK act Coldplay seems set to smash US iTunes album sales records this week. Hits Magazine suggests the band's new album, Viva La Vida, sold over 275,000 copies in the US in the most recent week, overtaking the previous record held by Jack Johnson. The album also sold in excess of 700,000 copies in US retailers.
Apple has been engaged in a Coldplay-focused iTunes campaign, which has helped raise the profile of the Chris Martin-fronted act. That Coldplay occupy the number one album slot on both sides of the Atlantic also illustrates the growing ability of Apple as a power to help create success for bands.
Coldplay's success isn't unexpected. As reported earlier this month, the new Coldplay album also became the best-selling album pre-sale ever released in the history of iTunes.

Corsair Launched Mac Pro Rev2-dedicated FB-DIMM RAM Modules
Corsair, the well-known RAM module company, launched a FB-DIMM kit made especially for the newest Mac Pro Rev2. The new Corsair Mac Memory kits are fully-buffered 800MHz DIMM of 4GB composed of 2 x 2GB modules. All Corsair Mac memory modules are qualified at Apple Test Labs in California and are 100% compatibility-guaranteed with a lifetime warranty.
The kit is priced 250 USD, so around 200 , and immediately available through Corsairs authorized distributors and resellers. This is of course way cheaper than the Apple RAM available from the apple Store, but slightly more expensive than similar FB-DIMM modules from other RAM companies (Dane-Elec, etc.)

Unlängst entdeckte man eine neue Sicherheitslücke in Mac OS X, die jeglichen Benutzer, der lokalen oder fernverwaltenden Zugang zu einem Mac hat, in die Lage versetzen kann, Root-Rechte zu erlangen. Hierfür ist nur die Eingabe einer Kommandozeile notwendig, welche die Möglichkeit des Apple Remote Desktop Agent (ARDAgent), Prozesse als root zu steuern, ausnutzt. Die ermöglicht die Ausführung von Befehlen, ohne dass nach dem Administrator-Passwort gefragt wird.

Wie bereits vor zwei Jahren angekündigt, verabschiedete sich Bill Gates nun endgültig aus dem Tagesgeschäfts des Softwareunternehmens Microsoft. The HIS iClear card is marketed as a device that rides shotgun with your graphics card and "provides up to a 10-percent increase in signal-to-noise ratio performance." Blizzard-Chefentwickler: Microsoft vernachlässigt PC-Gaming

Nokia Acquired Symbian Limited
In a short press release, Nokia announced to have acquired Symbian Limited for 264 millions Euros (400 millions USD). Symbian Limited is the software company that develops and licenses Symbian OS, the open operating system for mobile devices. User interfaces designed for Symbian OS include S60 from Nokia, MOAP for the 3G network and UIQ, designed by UIQ Technology, a joint venture between Motorola and Sony Ericsson. Mobile devices based on Symbian OS account for 60% of the converged mobile device segment. Symbian OS represented approximately 7% of all mobile device sales in 2007, up from 5% in 2006.
Nokia expect to strengthen the Open source platform for mobile device to be able to fight against the recent challenger Apple OS X and the iPhone, as well as Google and its Android OS, and leader Microsoft Windows Mobile.

Mtron Unveils Next Generation 260MB/s Controller
Mtron announced a new 260 MB/s controller technology at World IT Show 2008. Mtron improved the current 4-channel system allowing a maximum read/write speed of 130/120MB/s, its next generation controller technology will be based on an 8-channel system with the maximum read/write speed of 260/240MB/s (based on SLC chips); twice faster than current controllers and the fastest speed in the current SSD market by far.
In addition, Mtron announced that it will offer SSD models with the new controller technology in early 2009, the price is currently unknown.

Adobe schließt kritische Sicherheitslücke in Acrobat Reader

Canonical bringt Ubuntu MID Edition für mobile Geräte
Canonical hat eine erste Vorabversion von Ubuntu für Mobile Internet Devices (MID) veröffentlicht. Wer hätte nach der der Präsentation des ersten iPod vor nun bald sieben Jahren darauf gewettet, dass er irgendwann ein Soundsystem dafür beim Bäcker kaufen kann? Tchibo jedenfalls hat iPod-Zubehör inzwischen regelmäßig im Programm, aktuell sind zwei Lautsprecher-Docks mit Ladefunktion im Angebot.

Office 2004 lernt Open XML
Wer (noch) nicht von Microsoft Office 2004 auf die neue Version 2008 umsteigen wollte, musste bisher hinnehmen, ohne fremde Hilfsmittel keine Dokumente im neuen XML-Office-Format öffnen zu können. Legal news: Apple online store threatened with shut down
Apple and HP's online shopping system has won an unusual customer - Clear with Computers (CWC) - which has filed a patent infringement lawsuit claiming Apple and HP's online stores, websites, marketing and sales and supply chain systems infringe on patents held by CWC.
As explained in court documents filed in the Texas Eastern court this week, and available here, the case alleges HP and Apple infringed against the CWC-held United States Patent No. 5,615,342, entitled “Electronic Proposal Preparation System,” which was issued on March 25, 1997 and US Patent No. 5,367,627, "Computer-Assisted Parts Sales Method", itself issued November 22, 1994.

Motorola massacre: iPhone slices Razr...
Apple's iPhone is already snapping at the heels of Research In Motion and trouncing Palm, but spare a thought for another victim of the invasion - former partner, Motorola.
Apple worked with Motorola to deliver the first iTunes-capable mobile phone, the somewhat lacklustre ROKR. While this never truly competed with Motorola's RAZR phone, it was an attempt.
Motorola's handset sales are suffering now in the PiP (Post-iPhone) world. A survey by Rubicon Consulting reveals 14 per cent made the switch from Windows Mobile; 13 per cent from Blackberry, 7 per cent ran from Palm - but almost a quarter, 24 per cent, of those surveyed were previously owners of a Motorola Razr.

Wondering how Apple has bought down the price of the iPhone? Anyone remember the first-generation iPod, which shipped with its own power adaptor?
Announced on October 23, 2001. Jobs announced the first-generation iPod put "1,000 songs in your pocket," Apple charged $399 for the device. Over time, Apple whittled away the cost by sourcing lower-cost components and by removing things like the dock and power adaptor from the retail product, making these available as optional extras.
Now the company is doing the same thing again as it makes its iPhone more widely accessible at $199, subsidised by carriers. Apple seen as already greener
Apple is seen as the greenest IT brand, sharing the lead with HP, Microsoft, IBM, Intel and Sony, reveals an environmentally-focused research study among enterprise technology users.
The survey - conducted by GreenFactor - revealed that 70 per cent of those surveyed said they would be prepared to purchase green products, but only if they were convinced of the positive impact of the decision.
The research was conducted among 3,500 enterprise IT decision makers during the first quarter of 2008 by Strategic Oxygen, GCI Group and Cohn & Wolfe.

iPhone war begins: Nokia buys Symbian
This is interesting - Nokia this morning announced plans to buy mobile phone operating systems maker, Symbian. This is significant because it underlines how software is the new battle ground for the smartphone market, with devices and functionality taking second place to ease-of-use and integration.
Nokia paid out over $250 million in Symbian license fees last year, so it makes sense for the company to purchase the firm. Well, that, an imminent competition from Google's now-delayed Android platform, and the permanent looming threat of Apple with the iPhone. Apple, in particular, lends its proven skills in software design to the mobile phone market.

SproutCore co-founder speaks
An audio interview with SproutCore founder Charles Jolley (now senior user interface engineer for .Mac/Mobile Me at Apple) is available now. Jolley is the man with the plan, as commentators observe SproutCore could be the perfect open-JavaScript-based competitor for Flash and .Net.
Educated at the University of Kansas, he's the former MD of Nisus Software. His SproutCore code is used as the foundation of Mobile Me. It's a JavaScript framework designed to make web applications that work a lot like desktop apps while running within the browser, while also being widely compatible as a result of being built with JavaScript's open standards.

Games guru slams complexity on iPod
Chris Foster, a Harmonix developer from the company behind the original Guitar Hero and the more recently-introduced Rock Band, had some interesting insights on games development for the iPod today.
Speaking at the Paris Games Developers Conference, he talked about iPod users as gamers, characterising them as extremely casual gamers. He chatted about the game he worked on, called Phase, to outline the kind of lessons he learned in his work.
"The audience for iPod is different to that of the PSP and DS," he said. "The iPod user is not necessarily a gamer. Complexity is not welcome on the iPod."

UK group wants FM turned off in favor of DAB by 2012

Firefox3: Probleme mit iWeb-Seiten im Browser
iWeb 2 und Firefox 3 sind ein Paar, welches sich derzeit noch nicht gut verstehen. Von Darstellungsproblemen geplagt sind besonders die Fotogalerie und die Blogkommentare. Erstere erscheinen unter dem aktuellen Browser schlicht nicht, während Safari und Firefox 2 sie anzeigen. Bis es für dieses Problem eine offizielle Lösung gibt, empfiehlt sich der Einsatz des kleinen Programms "Fix iWeb and Firefox 3".

Firefox-Marktanteil knapp unter 20 Prozent
Der kleine Panda mag nicht unbedingt das aktivste Tier sein, doch sein Browser-Namensvetter ist dafür umso aktiver: Die Marktforscher von Net Applications vermelden einen gestiegenen Marktanteil. Demnach liege der Browser jetzt bei 19,17 Prozent (von 18,41), ein Anstieg, der vor allem auf Kosten des Internet Explorer geht, der mit 72,95 Prozent allerdings immer noch deutlich führt. Office 2008 und 2004 aktualisiert
Wer in Microsoft Office 2008 die Funktion AutoUpdate ausgeführt hat, dürfte das neue Update schon besitzen, welches gestern veröffentlicht wurde. Die 153 MB große Datei bringt Änderungen für verschiedene Teile der Office-Suite mit sich, die laut Microsoft die Stabilität und Leistung verbessern sollen. Unter anderem stürzt Entourage nicht mehr ab, wenn der Computer aus dem Ruhezustand zurückkehrt. Auch Probleme beim Konvertieren von Open-XML-Dokumenten wurden behoben.

Kein CrossFire zwischen HD 3800 und HD 4800
AMD vollzieht derzeit den Start der neuen Radeon-HD-4800-Karten, die, wie gewohnt, per CrossFire Multi-GPU-Betrieb ermöglichen. Los Angeles Traffic Cam brings live gridlocks to your cellphone

We have all ideas (okay, so we know it for a fact) that the Los Angeles Traffic Cam was designed for those living in LA, but we can't help but imagine how drivers in less congested cities could use this to make their own daily commute not seem so bad. NBC4 and 3rd Dimension have teamed up to beam out live video and nearly live still shots from some 270 LA-area traffic cameras to those with compatible mobiles, and being that it's ad-supported, the whole thing is completely free to end users. CryEngine 2 auch für die PSP?
Die Studio-Eröffnung in Budapest im Mai letzten Jahres durch Crytek sollte offiziell dazu beitragen, die hauseigene CryEngine 2 auch für andere Spiele-Genres tauglich zu machen. Schon damals deuteten einige Stimmen die Eröffnung als Schritt, die Engine nicht nur für neue Genres, sondern auch für neue Plattformen fit zu machen.

E Ink exec sees e-newspapers going commercial in 2009

Yeah, quite a few rags out there have already diverted at least some of their efforts to the electronic press, but according to E Ink's Ryosuke Kuwata, the trend is set to explode in late 2009.
