UK researcher finds Bluetooth more of a privacy threat than RFID

Privacy advocates have long since pointed out that the sniff-ability of Bluetooth signals were cause for concern, but now one University of Bath researcher has a little data to back that up. Vassilis Kostakos placed four Bluetooth receivers in the city's center for four months, during which he and his team tracked over 10,000 BT-enabled mobiles. According to Mr. Kostakos, they were able to "capture and analyze people's encounters in pubs, streets and shops." He continued on to mention that "

Poulsen Hybrid car conversion kit takes aim at X-Prize, your wallet

SPD will ARD und ZDF im Internet große Freiräume lassen
In der Diskussion um den 12. Rundfunkstaatsvertrag nähern sich die Parteien der Regierungskoalition einander an. SPD-Medienexperte Jörg Tauss hat eine Stellungnahme von Kulturstaatsminister Bernd Neumann (CDU) begrüßt, der sich überraschend dafür aussprach, dass Online-Angebot der öffentlich-rechtlichen Sender nicht auf Programmbegleitung zu beschränken. Derzeit verhandeln die Bundesländer über einen neuen Rundfunkstaatsvertrag, der dies regeln soll. First things first: this guide is absurdly complicated for what you get, but if you're the kind who thinks the journey is half the fun, you'll likely be in nerd heaven. In an attempt to make an easily accessible hidden storage disk, one Doppelgangergang hacked up an unused phone jack, a 4GB flash drive and a USB / phone cable. After a good bit of splicing, cutting and soldering, a custom phone line-to-USB cable emerged, enabling him to discreetly access the data with mum and dad assuming he was simply doing research over that trusty 56k connection. iPhone turns 2: time for a refresh, and other updates
New rumors and announcements related to the iPhone have popped up for the last few days:
- The 3G iPhone will announce on June, 29th in the USA, and in the following weeks it should invade Europe.
- Vodafone has won a contract to distribute the iPhone in 10 European countries (not all are exclusive contracts: in Italy, for example, Telecom Italia is also distributing the iPhone).
- thus, Italy will be the first country where 2 operators will sell the iPhone.
- Orange is said to be in talks with Apple about a similar contract.
It appears that Apple has finally decided to step away from the exclusive-carrier business model, in order to let carriers compete among eachother. Taking into account that T-Mobile and O2 are trying to sell all iPhones they still have in stock, and the exclusive contracts still appear to continue, one can imagine Apple's new approach:

NBC offers iPhone, touch TV episode streams
NBC has begun offering iPhone and iPod touch users in the US the chance to stream full episodes of the broadcaster’s shows, despite not making these available through iTunes.
Like the BBC’s iPlayer service in the UK, shows aren’t being made available for streaming to audiences outside the US, who will see a message warning them the streams aren’t available from their location.
NBC’s shows - including The Office - are streamed in QuickTime format and are made available ad-free.
iPhone or iPod touch owners wanting a slice of NBC’s goodness simply need to visit the NBC.com website, click on the video tab, and they’ll get the chance to select between available shows, many of which offer full episode streams for viewing.

Missbrauchsverfahren gegen Telekom eingestellt

Windows Home Server macht Fehler beim Backup
Microsoft meldet einen Fehler in der Komponente Windows Home Server Connector, die auf mit dem Windows Home Server verbundenen Computern läuft. iTunes downloads grow cheaper, kinda
iTunes offers music at inflation-busting prices, it seems, with the 99-cents per track price remaining static since the service launched in 2003.
Now, we’re not saying prices should go up - but we are interested in a recent Digital Audio Insider analysis of the inflation-adjusted price of a download through the service, which reveals that should prices have kept up with inflation, songs would now cost $1.14. And by 2012 songs will cost the equivalent of 74-cents a track, assuming prices remain static.
That download prices have remained static isn’t so remarkable when you consider the continuously falling price of CDs.
However, it’s clear that Apple will be under increasing pressure on the part of the music labels to raise its prices, even if it resists the call for price

Duke inches toward autonomous robo-surgeons

Duke researchers working on robo-doc lab feasibility studies announced this week a proof of concept using 3D ultrasound mapping to enable machines to "see" what they're doing. The first test procedures have focused on use of those ultrasound transducers in catheter-based procedures using fluoroscopy, so it sounds like we'll still have a few years before we say ahhh for a machine.

Sage Group steigert Umsatz um neun Prozent

AT&T officially promises free WiFi access
AT&T has updated its iPhone website, promising use of 17,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across the US as included within the regular iPhone tariffs.
The company briefly last week switched on Wi-Fi access at its hotspots across the country, switching it off just a few days later.
At the time, the company offered no information on its moves, but its updated page now promises: “Access to AT&T's more than 17,000 Wi-Fi hotspots, including Starbucks all for use in the US.”
The updated information on the company’s iPhone pages (in the Plans section) strongly suggests access to the hotspots will once again be enabled at an immediate future point.

Telekom mit stabilem Ergebnis im ersten Quartal
Trotz eines Umsatzrückgangs um 3,1 Prozent auf 14,987 Milliarden Euro hat die Deutsche Telekom im ersten Quartal 2008 einen bereinigten Gewinn vor Steuern, Zinsen und Abschreibungen (EBITDA) in Höhe von 4,686 Milliarden Euro erwirtschaftet, was in etwa dem Vorjahresniveau entspricht (plus 0,1 Prozent). Nachdem wie bereits am 22. April über den Ausverkauf des 8GB-iPhones in Großbritannien beim Anbieter Carphone Warehouse berichteten, meldet sich nun auch Provider O2 offiziell zu Wort. Auf dessen Webseite ist ersichtlich, dass beide Modelle des iPhones nicht mehr zu haben sind. Bereits letzte Woche gingen auch die Lagerbestände des 16GB-Modells bei Carphone Warehouse zur Neige. Unlike traditional electrosurgery tools like the bovie cutter, the PlasmaBlade operates at low temperatures, using pulsed plasma energy to cut tissue and control bleeding. Then, stupidly, we watched the video. O2 sells out of iPhones
Apple’s UK iPhone network partner O2 has sold out of iPhones.
The company’s iPhone pages now reveals the following message: “Please note: 8GB and 16GB iPhone are no longer available.”
O2 has clearly shifted all available stock in hand in order to make way for the next-generation iPhone, expected to ship next month. The network cut the cost of the 8GB model by £100 last month, selling out of that model within a week. Clearly the move also saw consumers shift to purchase the 16GB model.

Deutsche Telekom verliert 582.000 Festnetzkunden
Die Deutsche Telekom stand im ersten Quartal durch die Konkurrenz und negative Währungseffekte unter Druck. Die Zahl der Festnetznetzanschlüsse in Deutschland ist um 582.000 gesunken, während die Zahl der DSL-Neukundenanschlüsse bei 539.000 lag. Der bereinigte Gewinn vor Steuern, Zinsen und Abschreibungen (EBITDA) ist mit 4,7 Milliarden Euro gegenüber dem Vorjahreswert fast gleich geblieben. Panasonic ermöglicht künftig Highspeed-Web im Flugzeug
Ab Anfang 2009 will Panasonic Avionics ein System veröffentlichen, das den Breitbandzugang in Flugzeugen ermöglicht. Sony XEL-1 estimated to last customers only half as long as expected

Ruh roh. Research firm DisplaySearch has just unleashed a new report that takes an in-depth look at the ultrathin XEL-1, and it ended up finding a video lifetime barely half of what Sony promises. Apparently the company ran a couple of Sony's OLED TVs for 1,000 hours, after which it found that blue luminance degraded by 12-percent, the red by 7-percent and the green by 8-percent. Keine iPhones mehr in UK - Modellwechsel steht bevor
Für reichlich Überraschung sorgt in Großbritannien O2 mit der fetten Ankündung iPhone no longer available auf der hauseigenen Webseite. Es scheint also, als müssen die iPhone-Interessenten auf der Insel nun zwangsläufig auf die - nach allem was sich in den letzten Tagen so abzeichnet wohl in der Tat bevorstehende - zweite iPhone-Generation warten. Interessant ist in diesem Zusammenhang die Tatsache, dass (wie gestern berichtet) auch bei T-Mobile iPhones zur Zeit Mangelware sind. Das Modell mit 8 GB Speicher ist bis auf weiteres nicht verfügbar, soll aber angeblich in ein bis zwei Wochen wieder erhältlich sein. Auf eine offizielle Stellungnahme von T-Mobile warten wir noch.

iPhone Crashtest bei 100 km/h
Unsere italienischen Kollegen von macitynet.it haben die Story vom iPhone, das seinem Motorrad fahrenden Besitzer bei 100 km/h aus der Tasche gefallen und dann noch 50 Meter über den Asphalt geschlittert ist (Google-Übersetzung hier).
Nach kurzer Suche wurde es ziemlich zerschrammt und mit zersprungenem Frontglas gefunden und die Überraschung war groß, als es zu zu läuten anfing. Die Annahme des Anfrufs funktionierte wie auch alle sonstigen Funktionen einwandfrei, selbst das zersprungene Glas beeinträchtigt scheinbar die Bedienung des Touchscreen nicht.
