Apparently not one to let a tacky trend pass him by, Bill Gates has commissioned 100 mother of pearl-clad Xbox 360s to be used as extra special gifts, the first of which was given to South Korean President Lee Myung-bak earlier this month, prompting a response that we can only imagine to be, "gee, thanks." To be fair, the design by Korean artisan Kim Young-jun is a bit classier than most of the crystal-encrusted gadgets we come across, but the same can't quite be said for the move of bringing a bit of thinly disguised self-promotion to a visit with

Nintendo celebrates Wii Fit NY launch in Central Park

Nintendo is really rubbing in its NY-only launch date for the Wii Fit. Not only do New Yorkers get the Fit a whole two days prior to the rest of America, they also got to try it out for free alongside celebrity trainers in Central Park. Despite the threat of rain, we saw quite a few folks out enjoying the device, from young to old. Many of older set wasn't even aware there were two products in play, the Wii and the Wii Fit -- and some of the trainers seem to have trouble explaining that concept -- so it seems to us that a bundled SKU could do good things for Nintendo. According to a churning rumor-mill, Apple desperately wants to make over-the-air downloads of iTunes content a reality on the 3G iPhone. Bitkom: Deutschland holt bei Breitband auf
Deutschland holt bei der Breitbandnutzung im internationalen Vergleich weiter auf. Inzwischen verfügt jeder zweite Haushalt über einen schnellen Internet-Zugang. Damit hat sich die Zahl der Breitband-Anschlüsse nach Angaben des Bundesverbands Informationswirtschaft, Telekommunikation und neue Medien (Bitkom) seit 2003 vervierfacht. Telefonica MoviStar grabs Spain for iPhone
The iPhone is coming to Spain under exclusive arrangement with Telefonica Movistar, the network confirmed privately this month.
Apple has been widely-expected to ink a distribution deal with a Spanish mobile phone network to bring the iPhone to the country, and it appears Movistar has won the toss.
The company’s José Santos Esteras confirmed the news speaking at the Professional Communications Congress, PROCOM, earlier this month. He revealed the network to have secured an exclusive distribution deal for the iPhone in Spain, though competing firms this is only a limited contract, offering exclusivity for just a few months.
We've been predicting this network would snag the distribution contract for a few months now, but it's nice to confirm it.

Als Apple im vergangenen Monat den US-amerikanischen Chiphersteller P.A. Semi aufkaufte, waren die Reaktionen der Öffentlichkeit gespalten. Apple creams Windows PCs in US retail sales over $1000
We’ve always know that Apple’s marketshare figures are skewed by enterprise sales of servers, terminals and word processing PCs, and new research from NPD confirms this, revealing that two-thirds of laptops costing $1,000 or more and sold across US retail chains are Macs.
Macs? That’s right. New figures from the research group as reported by eWeek reveal that 66 per cent of laptops sold in US retail stores that cost $1,000 or more are Macs. And while that share slides to just 14 per cent for computers costing under $1,000, the news still confirms Apple’s growing footprint in retail Mac sales.
NPD vice president Stephen Baker told eWeek that Apple’s notebook marketshare is growing at twice the market rate, with Windows notebooks “pretty flat right now”.

MagSafe Is Great, but Patented
The MagSafe adaptor is a really interesting innovation, and of course Apple patented it. If this is obvious and normal, Apple might not be willing to see other PC manufacturer's to copy it, it also prevents companies that develop peripherals to offer any power related products for the Mac.
The first companies to have faced the problem were Batterygeek and more recently Quickertek. They offer batteries, but without adaptor, which should be bought independently, or built as a DIY product, this is quite expensive as one has to destroy a MagSafe in order to recover the adaptor.
FastMac just released an interesting alternative, and offer an universal charger, working with all Apple MacBook, but one should say all MacBook's batteries. Indeed, instead of getting connected to

Bekannt vor allem für tiefgründige Testberichte und Berichterstattung am Puls der Zeit sind Ars-Technica-Artikel seit geraumer Zeit Sinnbild für hochwertigen Technik-Journalismus geworden. So verwundert es nicht, dass das Blog nunmehr angeblich für viele Millionen US-Dollar den Besitzer gewechselt hat.

Asus' XG-Station für externe GPUs ist bald fertig
Erinnert sich noch jemand an die CeBIT letztes Jahr? Auf dem Asus-Stand konnte man ein doch recht interessantes Gerät begutachten, durch das es möglich war, an einem Notebook (oder generell an einem PC) eine externe Grafikkarte zu betreiben. XG-Station war der Name des Produkts, dessen Entwicklung nun so gut wie abgeschlossen zu sein scheint.

Windows XP SP3: Microsoft bestätigt Problem mit AMD-Systemen
Microsoft hat angekündigt, einen Filter zu setzen, damit das Service Pack 3 (SP3) auf bestimmten Windows-XP-Systemen nicht mehr über die Updatefunktion des Betriebssystems angeboten wird. Damit wurde der Fehler bestätigt, dass es auf manchen AMD-Systemen zu endlosen Neustartschleifen oder Abstürzen kommt, nachdem das Service Pack 3 aufgespielt wurde. iPod-Nutzer vom Helikopter erfasst und getötet
Wahrlich einer Verkettung unglücklicher Umstände ist ein junger Mann aus British Columbia (Kanada) in der vergangenen Woche zum Opfer gefallen, als er seinen iPod mit auf einen Spaziergang nahm. Denn statt auf Umweltgeräusche zu achten, hatte er die weißen Stöpsel im Ohr und ahnte nicht, dass ihn ein herannahender Hubschrauber gleich in den Tod reißen würde. AMD erhebt neue Kartellvorwürfe gegen Intel
AMD hat dem zuständigen Bezirksgericht in Delaware eine neue Anklageschrift (PDF) vorgelegt, in der es Intel erneut vorwirft, mit Computerherstellern wie Dell, Sony oder Toshiba Absprachen über die exklusive Verwendung von Intel-Prozessoren getroffen zu haben. Damit geht der seit Juni 2005 andauernde Rechtsstreit in die nächste Runde.

MSI bringt EFI auf P45-Boards im Juli

Here's the second part of our series of articles dedicated to NAS (part one).
The new generation of NAS devices has arrived, bringing some real performance gains, while keeping the user-friendly setup and usage interface. We have expanded our selection with two manufacturers, Synology and LaCie, thus offering more competition to the QNAP products. Once again, we're limited to initial installation, setup, and performance of the devices, and we've discovered some surprises. The new article is not available in EnglishFor more information, here.

Cowon's A3 PMP gets bumped to 80GB

If you've been holding off on getting an A3 for some strange reason, perhaps a bump in capacity will push you over the edge. Microsoft rethinks "transaction" with Yahoo

DISH Network's forthcoming DVRs get detailed: hints of Sling all over
