Kensington unveils Battery Pack and Charger for iPhone / iPod
Filed under: Cellphones, Peripherals
Sure, there are already a handful of options out there for extending the life of your iPhone / iPod battery, but since when have we been ones to gripe about a little competition? Kensington has just introduced a standard and miniature version of its Battery Pack and Charger for iPhone / iPod, which unsurprisingly provides juice to your device's internal battery and can be recharged simultaneously. As you could likely guess, the only differences between the two contraptions are the size, price and battery life; the 0.22-pound standard model extends play time to up to 100 hours (music) / 6 hours (talk), while the even ti

Epoda promises to deliver water-proof EP2501 watch phone
Filed under: Cellphones
While that lone image above doesn't exactly inspire much confidence of its actual existence, China's Epoda is apparently now looking for partners to help distribute its EP2501 water-proof watch phone, which supposedly packs more features than your average, non-wearable cellphone. That includes Windows CE 6.0 for an OS, quad band 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900Mhz connectivity, a 2-megapixel camera, a 1.4-inch display, the usual PMP functions, 1GB of memory, and "support" for WiFi and Bluetooth (it's not clear if that means it's built-in or not, although dongles would pose a bit of a problem). Intel and NVidia Team Up in Parallel Programming Initiative
Source : TGdailyWhile Intel and NVidia have respectively claimed that GPU are dead, and CPU have no future, they found themselves common interest in an exciting project which could, of course, serve their goals: the Parallel Programming Initiative
Indeed, even if future computer will only run with a GPU, or a CPU, having multi core processing units will not bring that much extra performance gain if software (and OSes) are not able to benefit from such raw power, in order to deliver massively multithreaded applications.
Of course, Intel and NVidia are not the only sponsors of this initiative, and AMD, Nvidia, Sun Microsystems as well as Intel, Hewlett-Packard and IBM, are also on the list. By providing hardware and financial support to university laboratories, such as Stanfords Pervasive Parallelism Lab (PPL), those sponsors expect to boost research in developing parallel programming. Apple's cash stocks approaching Microsoft's
With the failed attempt by Microsoft to buy Yahoo! as a backdrop, the importance of having some cash on hand is becoming more important in the technology world. With that in mind, the San Francisco Chronicle today does a piece on how Apple's $19 Billion dollar cash pile is climbing, while Microsoft is falling and currently at $26 Billion. The balance was more than $64 billion less than four years ago.
What is all the money for? According to some analysts, it might be for a rainy day - perhaps the tech industry will hit a dry spell? Maybe Apple will hit an innovation wall?
More likely however, Apple wants to give itself the ability to make a megabuy - like the Microsoft-Yahoo deal.
The trends have implications for both companies. Cash translates into the ability to consider acquisitions and other potentially business-boosting deals. Apple has ci

Concordance enables Logitech Harmony programming in UNIX / Linux

As a whole, it's hard to kvetch too much about Logitech's Harmony line of universal remotes, but as a devout hacker once told us, there's always room for improvement. Phil Dibowitz has been pursuing this project for months, and it looks as if a final release is at long last ready for mass distribution. Put simply, Concordance enables the Harmony family to be programmed in UNIX (which Logitech's software doesn't support) as well as in Windows and Linux. Furthermore, Phil states that the goal is to be "cross-platform," so Mac u

Issues with the Mac Pro 2008
Source : Apple DiscussionsMost review sites have already lamented about the insufficient USB ports (currently 5) on the top-of-the-line pro systems. Certainly one were not expecting underpowered ports too. Well, apparently it happens only when one uses all the 5 ports and especially true when the ports are connected to another hub (e.g. a Dell display with a built-in USB hub etc). These hubs appears to draw an excessive amount of power which unfortunately interferes with the other ports. Interestingly, these built-in hubs (within displays) should not require additional power as they are independently powered.
The above paragraph is certainly nothing conclusive, but whatever the actual reasons may be, you know what to look out for when you are unable to mount a thumbdrive, even when

The system features the world's largest (so they claim) color LED display, powered completely by photovoltaic cells which are integrated into the glass curtain. During the day the wall -- located on the Xicui entertainment complex in Beijing -- harvests solar energy, then expends the charge at night in a display of undulating colors. The system goes on display this month, but if you can't make it to China, you can watch a video of the work in action after the break.[Via
