PS3 firmware 2.40 said to be bringing in-game XMB, trophies
Filed under: GamingIt's not confirmed by Sony just yet, but Videogaming247 says it has it on "good authority" that the upcoming version 2.40 firmware update for the PS3 will at long last bring with it in-game XMB, as well as the slightly less-anticipated trophy support. iRiver Spinn gets a release date, fleshed out details

HTC ships first batch of Touch Diamond handsets

PSP hacked for use with DualShock controller

It's not the first time we've seen a controller hacked for use with the PSP, but this mod by Acidmods member Blizzrad takes things a bit further than most, with it relying entirely on hardware modifications in order to work, meaning it can be done on any PSP regardless of the firmware. All this talk that .Mac’s set for a re-branding and service improvements sent us away to search for some more incidental information. Here’s what we’ve come up with:
- Apple filed an application for the Mobile Me trademark in January 2006. (Source, Daring Fireball).
- The Mobile Me URL was transferred to one of Apple’s favourite domain registrars, Mark Monitor, on 11 January, 2007. It was parked on 13 January, 2007.
- Mark Monitor serves up to half the Fortune 500 companies, and was last widely discussed in connection with Apple earlier this year when it purchased the following domains on behalf of Apple: MacBookAir.net, MacBookAir.org, MacBookAir.us, MacBookAir.info, MacBookAir.biz.

IBM recycelt millionsten PC in Deutschland
Innerhalb von nur zehn Jahren hat das IBM Asset Recovery Center in Mainz den millionsten PC recycelt. Dort und in 21 weiteren weltweiten Aufbereitungsbetrieben hat IBM nach eigenen Angaben im letzten Jahr über 50.000 Tonnen an altem IT-Equipment ausgebaut, in anderen Computer wiederverwertet oder als Wertstoff verkauft. WWDC: No European satellite feed
Here in the land of Mac we’ve been gleefully wishing May out of the way as we wait in excitement for Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ keynote session at WWDC this year - we all hope the company will announce the next-generation iPhone during the event.
We still do.
However, we’ve just learned that Apple will not be holding an exclusive invite-only media event in London during the keynote session. And while the keynote is expected to be made available on video after the event, there will be no chance in Europe for people outside of Apple to watch what Jobs says as it happens.
This may mean nothing at all, but given Apple’s penchant in recent years for inviting select media to the BBC for a chance to watch a satellite feed of the Jobs-note, we’re beginning to wonder if there’s a reason the company doesn’t plan to invite them this time.

Telekom hat angeblich auch Bankdaten ausspioniert
Die Deutsche Telekom hat beim Bespitzeln von Journalisten und Aufsichtsräten offenbar drastischere Maßnahmen angewandt als bisher bekannt. Wie die Süddeutsche Zeitung meldet, wurden nicht nur die Telefonverbindungen, sondern auch die Bankdaten ausspioniert. Auch seien durch das Auswerten von Handydaten einzelner Personen Bewegungsprofile erstellt worden, so der Bericht. Staatsanwalt Fred Apostel bestätigte, derartige Hinweise von einer Berliner Sicherheitsfirma erhalten zu haben. Bei einer ersten Durchsuchung der Telekomzentrale hätten sich die Hinweise jedoch noch nicht bestätigt.

Gigabyte to apologize to ASUS, do laundry for next year
It's over before it even began. Gigabyte has agreed to publicly apologize to ASUS over that little Energy Processing Unit spat they've been having. As part of the reported agreement, Gigabyte will tone down its "defamatory" comments while maintaining a more subdued supposition that its own DES technology is superior to ASUS' EPU. See, no need to take the matter to court, no need to distract senior execs from executing the business plan. All it took was a little public humiliation (and soap) to make them pals again.

Umfrage: Microsoft ist bester Arbeitgeber in Europa
Microsoft ist unter den Großunternehmen mit mehr als 500 Mitarbeitern der beste Arbeitgeber in Europa. Das belegt ein vom Great Place to Work Institute Europe durchgeführter Wettbewerb, an dem in diesem Jahr insgesamt 1250 Unternehmen teilgenommen haben. Darin landete Google nur auf Platz 2, gefolgt von Cisco. Ein weiteres IT-Unternehmen, das es auf die Top-50-Liste schaffte, ist SAP.

Novell setzt positiven Trend fort
Novell hat den Aufwärtstrend des ersten Geschäftsquartals 2008 im zweiten Quartal (bis 30. April) bestätigt und erneut ein positives Ergebnis erzielt: Der GAAP-Nettogewinn stieg auf 5,9 Millionen Dollar oder 0,02 Dollar je Aktie. Im Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres hatte das Unternehmen noch einen Verlust von 2,9 Millionen Dollar oder 0,01 Dollar pro Aktie verzeichnet. Xerox entwickelt neuartige Druckertinte
Xerox hat während der Drupa in Düsseldorf eine neuartige Tinte für digitale Drucker vorgestellt, mit der sich unterschiedlichste Materialien wie Folien, Pappe oder Kunststoffe bedrucken lassen. Smallest NAND Flash Engraving Process by Intel and Micron
Source : CDR InfoIntel and Micron unveiled the first flash memory chips (4 GB) produced by sub-40nm engraving process. This 34nm process was jointly developed and manufactured by both companies via their NAND flash joint venture, IM Flash Technologies (IMFT).
This is the smallest NAND process geometry on the market, and when applied on 300 mm wafer, one could then produce around 1.6 TB of NAND flash storage space.
Of course, such technology breakthrough will be useful for speeding mass production and adoption of SSD. One can already dream of a notebook-dedicated 512 GB SSD with a reasonable price.

OLED Display: 0.3 mm Thickness!
While it remains impossible to offer wide OLDE display, Sony keeps working on this technology, and is trying to reduce the thickness of such panel. The last prototype to come out from Sonys R&D features a record 0.3 mm thickness. Such achievement was made possible by eliminating the use of backlighting. However, such panel might become very fragile, and once should find ways to protect them behind a front glass.
There is no discussion that the OLED technology will allow thinner panel than the current LCD system, while offering low-power consumption.

Incompatibly between CS3 and Mac OSX 10.5.3
Stéphane, one of our readers working with Photoshop CS3 announced a problem described on forums Apple and which has also affected him.
An incompatibility arises (at least with certain configuration) between Photoshop CS3 and Mac OS X 10.5.3. It causes the corruption of the saved files (at least .psd and .tiff) making them impossible to reopen.
It seems that this bug causes a corruption to the header of the file. While waiting for a solution, the only work around seems to downgrade to 10.5.2.
[Update] The corruption seems to occur only if one opens a file created under a version previous to 10.5.3 and then to save it. It will be then illegible.
On the other hand, a file created under 10.5.3 and then edited will not pose a problem.

Wer vor hat abzunehmen, kann sich vom Mac unterstützen lassen, zwar nicht bei der sportlichen Betätigung, aber beim Zählen von Kalorien: NSObjects hat Calories veröffentlicht. Studie: Nachfrage nach Smartphones wächst
Im Vergleich zu Anfang 2007 stieg der Marktanteil von Smartphones von 1,7 Prozent auf 6,3 Prozent. Das belegt eine von J.D. Power and Associates in den USA durchgeführte Studie. Notebook-Hotlines: Inkompetenz überwiegt
Die Stiftung Warentest berichtet in der Juni-Ausgabe der Zeitschrift test über die Leistungen von Hersteller-Hotlines bezüglich Notebook-Support. Demnach wurden nur die Hälfte der telefonischen Test-Anfragen vollständig oder annähernd gelöst. Beim E-Mail-Support half sogar nur jede fünfte Antwort weiter. Erstmals konnten die Tester aber auch zwei Hotlines mit Gut bewerten.

Filed under: CellphonesWe now have official word from Samsung regarding the browser on its new Samsung L870 slider. You may recall that the Samsung-issued press release listed "Safari browser (full browsing)" as a feature. Now the clarification: "Actually, L870 is equipped with S60 OSS browser, also known as S60 safari browser because both are using same webcore platform. Sorry again for the unclear specification, and bothering you with this." Of course, the S60 browser has never been known, even informally, as the "S60 safari browser," but we'll let Samsung bang heads together internally over that one.

Dell erzielt Umsatz- und Gewinnsteigerung
Im ersten Quartal 2008 hat Dell einen Umsatz von 16 Milliarden Dollar erzielt, was einem Wachstum von 9 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr entspricht. Der Gewinn stieg im gleichen Zeitraum um 12 Prozent auf 38 Cent pro Aktie. Damit übertraf das Unternehmen die Erwartungen der Analysten, die einen Gewinn von 34 Cent pro Aktie vorausgesagt hatten.

Vermutlich neuer iPhone-Spot im Apple Store gedreht
Im New Yorker Apple Store an der 5th Avenue wurde gestern allem Anschein nach ein Werbespot für die nächste iPhone-Generation gedreht. Der Platz um den Glaswürfel am Eingang wurde abgesperrt, das Treiben im Store selbst wurde unter anderem mit einem großen Kamerakran auch von außerhalb aufgenommen.
Das Blog iLife berichtet von mysteriösen Kisten mit der Aufschrift "Anonymous 5+4" und buntem Treiben im Inneren des Würfels, vor allem im Bereich der iPhone-Tische. iLife ist derzeit nicht erreichbar, wir haben für euch bei Flickr ein umfangreiches Bilderset der Aktion gefunden.

Apple will flood the world with its iPhone
A day does not pass without one hearing about a new agreement between some operator and Apple for the distribution of the iPhone.
The breaking news is that while waiting for an global agreement on China, HongKong and Macao will be able to get the device via Hutchinson.
For the next release of the iPhone, it should be available in the main industrialized countries of the world contrary to its initial launch that was only in the United States.
Thus, Apple should not have any difficulties reaching its objectives, the market potential being largely more important.
All in all, and it is rare that one can see it so easily, Apple seems to have taken account of the strategic "errors" made with the first iPhone and has taken steps not to reproduce them.

Note 3: Apple-Support bei Stiftung Warentest
Den technischen Support 14 Firmen hat Stiftung Warentest unter die Lupe genommen und kommt zu einem eher schlechten Urteil: Jede zweite schnitt mit ausreichend oder schlechter ab, auch die Anfragen wurden nur zu Hälfte vollständig oder annähernd gelöst. Teuer kann es bei Apple werden, zumindest wenn das Problem komplexerer Natur ist. Laut Stiftung Warentest berechnete Apple hierfür 49 Euro plus Telefongebühren. In zwei Fällen mussten nur letztere bezahlt werden, ansonsten haben die Tester einen Durchschnittspreis von 31,60 Euro errechnet.

Austauschbare LED-Streifen für längere Display-Lebensdauer
Nach und nach stellt Apple die Displays auf LED-Hintergrundbeleuchtung um. Das vorher verwendete Beleuchtungssystem gilt als umweltschädlicher, verbraucht mehr Strom und nimmt mehr Platz ein. Zudem muss bei einem Ausbrennen von Lampen oft das ganze Display ausgetauscht werden.

In den USA gab es bereits 2005 die erste Zusammenarbeit zwischen iTunes und dem Konzertkartenanbieter Ticketmaster. Damals wurden mit der Vorbestellung des neuen Depeche Mode-Albums Gutscheincodes für den Voraberwerb von Konzerttickets vergeben.
Mittlerweile läuft die Kooperation zwischen iTunes und Ticketmaster auch international. Wer das neue Album von Paul Weller über iTunes vorbestellt, erhält neben dem digitalen Booklet und einem exklusiven Titel auch einen Gutscheincode für Ticketmaster. Bacteria computer is good at math, even those pesky story problems

Scientists have successfully developed a computer out of E. coli bacteria (again), which has managed to solve the Burnt Pancake Problem -- at least in a limited form. The problem involves creating a golden-side-up stack of pancakes out of all different size pancakes, each of which is burned one one side, with the largest pancake on the bottom tapering up to the smallest on top.
