EA Games aiming to bundle peripherals with games

Incompatibility between iWeb and Firefox 3

Dell, Hitachi et Westen Digital sued for patent violation
Source : InfoworldIt is now the turn of the manufacturers of hard drives (Hitachi and Western Digital) and Dell to be pursued for patent violation. The company, Convolve Inc., has sued them for using one of its patented technologies aiming at controlling the vibration of products moving very fast, in this case the platters of the hard drives.
Dell finds itself involved in the suit as a user of the disputed disks, but especially (although exactly how is not stated) as inciting the two manufacturers of disks to find quickly grounds for agreement so as to remove fault from this important customer.
The control of the vibrations of the platters is of immense importance. Indeed, if it is not controlled, it causes not only premature wear of the mechanical parts but also degraded the performances in reading and writing.
We will know in a few months if this business will be regulated in front of the courts or with the help

Antro Solo gas-electric hybrid promises 150 mpg

DARPA's Vulcan engine combines turbo jet with scramjet, faces will melt

When you're building a jet that exponentially accelerates past Mach 6 -- as one does -- you need to come up with a way to get it off the ground. Scramjets, or Constant Volume Combustion (CVC) engines, use compressed air and a reduced nozzle to accelerate planes, and they're a hot technology in aviation. Problem is, you have to get them to Mach 4 before the magic happens. Traditionally, scramjet tests have involved strapping the craft to supersonic jets to get the jet up to speed -- not a very cost-effective solution.

Offshore wind power park to energize Delaware homes

Studie: Firmen sind mit ISPs nicht zufrieden

Games guru slams complexity on iPod
Chris Foster, a Harmonix developer from the company behind the original Guitar Hero and the more recently-introduced Rock Band, had some interesting insights on games development for the iPod today.
Speaking at the Paris Games Developers Conference, he talked about iPod users as gamers, characterising them as extremely casual gamers. He chatted about the game he worked on, called Phase, to outline the kind of lessons he learned in his work.
"The audience for iPod is different to that of the PSP and DS," he said. "The iPod user is not necessarily a gamer. Complexity is not welcome on the iPod."

Zu Beginn unserer Review wollen wir euch gleich den wohl größten Kritikpunkt des ansonsten durchweg eleganten DUO-Soundsytems auf den Tisch legen. Ihr könnt euch sicherlich noch an den entsprechenden News-Eintrag erinnern. Anfang Juni vorgestellt, sollte das DUO-Soundsystem als eines der ersten GEAR4-Produkte vollkompatibel zum iPhone sein. SproutCore co-founder speaks
An audio interview with SproutCore founder Charles Jolley (now senior user interface engineer for .Mac/Mobile Me at Apple) is available now. Jolley is the man with the plan, as commentators observe SproutCore could be the perfect open-Java-based competitor for Flash and .Net.
Educated at the University of Kansas, he's the former MD of Nisus Software. His SproutCore code is used as the foundation of Mobile Me. It's a JavaScript framework designed to make web applications that work a lot like desktop apps while running within the browser, while also being widely compatible as a result of being built with JavaScript's open standards.
As interviewer, Dion Almaer, reports for Ajaxian: "We talked about the history of the project, how it differs from other frameworks that are out there, and where they are going."

First team sets a date for Google Lunar X-Prize attempt

Just under a year after Google ponied up the money for the Lunar X Prize, there's a team set to attempt a launch and claim the $20M reward. The Aeronautics and Cosmonautics Romanian Association (ARCA) has scheduled up a launch of a 92-pound rover called the European Lunar Lander within the the next three months, with the plan being to float a balloon over the sea to a height of 11 miles, at which point a STABILO rocket will carry the payload to space. Power assisted Live Luggage ready to "world premier"

Well, well three years and change have passed since since we first told you about power-assisted Live Luggage. Now it's finally coming to market -- at least that's what we think they mean by a June 26th 2008 "world premier." The PA series of checked baggage features a 12V NiMH rechargeable battery pack supplying power to the wheels when the handle is gripped and the bag is tilted. The bags weighs 10.6kg (23-pounds) which is about 3kg (6.6-pounds) more than standard hard luggage, according to the manufacture. Toshiba to Add Cell CPU in Notebooks
Couple of days ago, we were reporting about Cell-based accelerating card designed by Toshiba to boost HD video transcoding, Featuring only 4 active SPE units (compared to 8 for the PS3), 128 MB XDR DRAM memory (compared to 256 MB for the PS3), and clocked at 1.5 GHz, it is sitting on a PCI 1x card.
Toshiba decided to install such chips in notebooks in order to accelerate multimedia tasks. The overall architecture of the computer will remain the same, Core 2 Duo and a dedicated GPU, but when decoding or encoding HD video, the system will make use of the SpursEngine (the name of the Cell-based chips).

iPhone in Switzerland: Orange, Swisscom and APR
As we reported it previously, Switzerland will be one of the countries where 2 carriers will officially offer the iPhone to consumers. So, Orange and Swisscom shops will distribute the iPhone 3G, as well as all Apple premium Resellers; and NOT the other Apple Resellers. This was confirmed by Daniel Forster, administrator of Swiss APR (http://www.macs.ch)
The iPhone 3G will be available in Switzerland from the following shops:
Orange: Orange Center, Orange Point, Interdiscount, MediaMarkt, and APR

First LCD 16:9 Panels to Hit the Market
Source : TGdailyAs we reported previously, LCD manufacturers as well as computer designers have initiated a transition from 16:10 LCD display to 16:9 in order to adopt the same format than the TV HD. BenQ already announced the availability of 2 products based on this ratio, a 21.5" and a 24" monitors both featuring a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, the same one used for the Full HD 1080p.
When compared to the previous ratio 16:10, we lose 120 lines, while having wider display, if it can makes manufacturers as well as integrators' life easier, it might not please all users who got used to such vertical extra space when organizing windows or working desktop. But as usual with the previous migration from 4:3 to 16:10, most customers' complains will not be heard by LCD display manufacturers

iTunes Store Australien verkauft TV-Serien
Ohne große Aufregung oder Ankündigung hat Apple kürzlich auch sein Angebot im australischen iTunes Store erweitert. Neben der riesigen Musikauswahl können Australier nunmehr auch TV-Serien kaufen. Apple kooperiert hierfür mit insgesamt fünf Sendern, die ihre Programme über iTunes verfügbar machen. Von Spielfilmen allerdings fehlt wie im deutschen iTunes Store nach wie vor jede Spur.

This is interesting - Nokia this morning announced plans to buy mobile phone operating systems maker, Symbian. This is significant because it underlines how software is the new battle ground for the smartphone market, with devices and functionality taking second place to ease-of-use and integration.
Nokia paid out over $250 million in Symbian license fees last year, so it makes sense for the company to purchase the firm. Well, that, an imminent competition from Google's now-delayed Android platform, and the permanent looming threat of Apple with the iPhone. Apple, in particular, lends its proven skills in software design to the mobile phone market.
Mobile phone makers have been slammed in the past for creating user interfaces which don't sufficiently engage users and lack the level of intuition most of us demand from devices we use every day

Analysten: iPhone 3G ist nicht businesstauglich
Während Apple die Businesstauglichkeit seines Smartphone-Modells iPhone 3G betont, stehen Analysten dem skeptisch gegenüber und empfehlen Unternehmen, noch zu warten, bevor sie das es als Endgerät für ihre Mitarbeiter einführen. ZFS kommt: Neue Funktionen von Mac OS X Snow Leopard

Symbian wird erst kostenlos, dann Open Source
Aus dem Smartphone-Betriebssystem Symbian soll eine offene Softwareplattform werden, die letztendlich als Open Source zur Verfügung steht. JVC Soundsystem mit 2 Docks für iPods und iPhone
Zu dem bereits im Januar angekündigten JVC-Audiosystem NX-PN7 gibt es detaillierte Informationen. Das Gerät ist sowohl für iPods wie auch für das iPhone zertifiziert und bietet die Möglichkeit, zwei kompatible Geräte gleichzeitig anzudocken um beispielsweise deren Akkus zu laden.
Für die Audiowiedergabe kann entweder einer der beiden Dockanschlüsse oder ein zusätzlicher AUX-Anschluss am Gerät ausgewählt werden. Zudem besitzt das NX-PN7 einen integrierten Radioempfänger, eine Uhr mit Weckfunktion sowie einen Videoausgang für das Abspielen von Videos über ein angeschlossenes TV-Gerät.
Alles in allem also ein durchaus interessantes Leistungspaket, das in den USA ab sofort für 150 Dollar erhältlich ist. Ob, wann und wie das Audiosystem auch nach Europa kommt ist noch offen, wir haben bereits bei JVC nachgefragt und warten auf Antwort.

Broadcom cofounder Henry Samueli reaches plea agreement, admits he lied to SEC
