Difficult to change settings of Airport base stations
Wired has put online a comparison of 5 802.11n wifi routers; the Apple Airport Extreme faces off against its competitors from the famous brands (Linksys, D-Link, NetGear and Belkin).

New online service from Adobe
Adobe has released a beta version of an online group working enviroment.
The platform has 5 tools:
- a word processing: Buzzword
- a Web conference tool (screen sharing, chat, notes, audio, and video): ConnectNow
- a converter of files to format pdf: CreatePDF
- a place to share documents: Share
- and finally an online storage: My Files
These various tools open communication between the Mac (under Tiger or Leopard) and a PC (running XP or Vista). Safari is not forgotten on our platform since it - as well as FireFox -is compatible.

Billboards with facial-recognition software trickling out

iTunes-Filme in England, iPhone in Japan
Angesichts der aktuellen Nachrichtenflut in Sachen iPhone versuchen wir derzeit ein wenig mehr als sonst zu filtern und lassen weniger relevante News, die nicht direkt Deutschland, Österreich oder die Schweiz betreffen, unter den Tisch fallen. AT&T touts 20% boost in 3G data speeds

Microsoft verlängert erneut Verkauf von Windows XP
Microsoft hat auf der Computex in Taipeh eine weitere Ausnahme für den zum 30. Juni dieses Jahres in Kraft tretenden Verkaufsstopp von Windows XP angekündigt. Neuer Patentantrag zeigt iPhone-Zukunft
Da im Angesicht der bevorstehenden WWDC ohnehin bereits überall die Rede von der Vorstellung eines neuen iPhone ist, kann auch ein Patentantrag nicht mehr viel verraten. So zumindest könnte Apple geplant haben, könnten sie das Veröffentlichungsdatum der Anträge selbst bestimmen. Das US-amerikanische Patent- und Markenamt kam mit seiner Verfügungsgewalt aber allen Planungen voraus und publizierte Ende letzter Woche einen umfangreichen Patentantrag zu beinahe allen Aspekten des iPhone. Montag öffnet der App-Store in iTunes
Seitdem sich kurz nach der Veröffentlichung des iPhone-SDK vor ein paar Monaten die ersten Entwickler für den App-Store angemeldet haben, erhielten zunächst nur wenige eine positive Rückmeldung. Nun will cnet.com aber von einer Quelle erfahren haben, dass die Entwickler sich auf einen Start ihrer Applikationen am kommenden Montag vorbereiten. Dies wäre auch der Termin, zu dem die Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) im Moscone Center, San Francisco durch Steve Jobs eröffnet wird. Man kann also davon ausgehen, dass der App-Store in iTunes schon am 9. Juni eröffnet wird.

DarFon exhibits luminous keyboard, giggling mouse at Computex

There are literally thousands of wacky gadget variations floating around Computex, but one that's caught the eye of our Chinese counterparts is this snazzy DarFon keyboard. As you can tell by the picture above, the keys sport some luminous qualities, and the board is constructed from lacquered metal, said to give it a "burnish." Apparently the company was also showing off a mouse which would giggle when you touch it and gets upset if someone you "don't like" emails you (don't ask us how it knows). Creepy? Yes. Hynix develops triple-level-cell NAND flash: 30 percent cheaper than MLC
Filed under: StorageThe more cells you can pack onto a NAND chip, the cheaper the storage, so we're excited about Hynix's recent annoucement of triple-level-cell NAND flash. You might have noticed that MLC-based SSDs are cheaper than SLC units, and TLC keeps the trend alive -- Hynix says the cost of TLC production is some 30 percent lower than than current chips. On top of that, the 32GB chips themselves are 30 percent smaller than current NAND chips, meaning device manufacturers will be able to cram more storage into our PMPs and phones. We'll have to wait a little while though: production is going to ramp up in October, and Hynix hasn't committed to using the new chips in SSDs quite yet.

Mac OS X 10.6: Only for Intel Inside Hardware?
According to Tuaw, Mac OS X 10.6 could be released in January 2009 during the Macworld Expo of San Francisco. The reason we are discussing about such rumor is the additional points reported by Tuaw:
- Mac OS X 10.6 would not support PPC-based machine anymore.
- Mac OS X 10.6 would be fully 64-bit coded, so it would also exclude all Intel Core Duo-based Macs, in other words the first generation of MacBook and iMac.
Of course if such information are confirmed and turn true, then for sure many PPC-based users as well as early adopters of Intel CPU-based Macs will be complaining and for sure quite upset. But it seems that Apple wants to completely turn the page of the PPC era, as well as move forward to full 64-bit OS.

Softbank Gets the iPhone in Japan
As our Japanese source was letting us know couple of weeks ago, Softbank, the third Japanese carrier, will be the exclusive carrier to distribute the iPhone 3G in Japan.
Having the iPhone announced in Japan definitely confirm, if it was still necessary, that the new iPhone will indeed support 3G, and even probably at least 3G+, as a non 3G mobile phone will simply not be sold in Japan.

SanDisk Launched SSD Dedicated to Ultramobile Device
Surfing on the current success of ultra-mobile devices and/or ultra-low cost computer, SanDisk announced a new series of SSD specifically designed for this market.
To reduce manufacturing cost as well as the size, the SSD is more or less a printed circuit on which sit flash memory chips and a controller. Data transfer speed are not as high as standard SSD, but reaches 39 MB/s in reading and 17 MB/s in writing modes. Three models should be available based on their storage capacity: 4, 8 and 16 GB.
Such reduced SSD will be using a PATA interface, very similar to the Zif PATA found in the Mac Book Air. So one could use them if SanDisk decide to increase the storage space further of such reduced SSD in the future.

In Abstimmung mit dem Ministerium für Landwirtschaft und Umwelt des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt untersucht das Informationszentrum Mobilfunk e.V. (IZMF) an ausgewählten Messstationen in Sachsen-Anhalt die Strahlenbelastung von Mobilfunkmasten. Telefonica, Movistar to share iPhone Spain
It’s crystal clear now that Apple is moving away from exclusive links with carriers in order to introduce the iPhone into different countries, with news that Spain’s Telefonica will join Movistar in offering the device in Spain.
Telefonica this morning confirmed it will begin selling the iPhone in Spain this year. The company owns UK network, O2, which sells the device in Ireland and the UK.
At the end of March, Telefonica had 23 million users in Spain, where it is the leading mobile phone firm.

Apple has quietly introduced film (movie) downloads through the UK arm of its iTunes Store.
The service is clearly only being ramped-up right now, with no link to Films on the iTunes front page, you must click on any one of the iTunes Store categories (Music, Music Videos etc.) in order to see the link that takes you to the new Films page.
At present, studios agreeing to serve up content through iTunes in the UK aren't listed, but a number of titles are.

Mit dem letzte Woche erschienen Update auf Mac OS X 10.5.3 wurde bei einigen Nutzern nicht alles besser: Photoshop hatte es sich nämlich bei vielen durch die neue Systemversion zur Gewohnheit gemacht, dort gespeicherte TIFF- und PSD-Dateien beim erneuten Öffnen nicht mehr lesen zu können. Den Open-Source-Player VLC wird es zukünftig auch für iPhone und iPod Touch geben. Die erste Version wird derzeit noch getestet und spielt noch nicht alle Dateiformate ab. Zu MPEG, AVI und MP3 sollen sich bald die Formate FLAC, OGG, WMA, WMV und DivX gesellen und die erste öffentliche Version der Software wird nicht lange auf sich warten lassen.

Analyst: Linux bei Handys bald Nummer zwei hinter Symbian

Seagate Released New 2.5'' HDs for Servers
Source : SeagateIf 3.5" HDs are still mainly used in servers, manufacturers are getting interested in 2.5" HDs as they release less heat while consuming less power. It also saves space and one can install more 2.5 HD units then 3.5" HDs in a defined space. Seagate is almost alone on the market and offers already 2.5" HD spinning at 15000 rpm; however their storage capacity currently tops at 73 GB.
To further strengthen its offer, Seagate announced a new series, named Savvio 10K.3, they spin only at 10000 rpm but their storage capacity will explode to 300 GB while offering a MTBF of 1.6 million of hours.
Do not dream of installing such HDs in a MacBook, beside the noise and the power consumption, its SAS interface is incompatible for the notebook platform.

Wir warten mal wieder auf's Christkind in Form von Apple-Boss Steve Jobs, der am Montag - und daran zweifelt wohl niemand mehr - die zweite Generation des iPhone zusammen mit einem umfassenden Software-Update für das iPhone und den iPod touch vorstellen wird. 7 hours on a single battery charge for a portable based on the ATOM
Source : PC InpactOn Monday, Asus will reveal its new EEEPC, the 901. Equipped with a 9" screen and running an ATOM processor at 1,33 GHz, it will not be a bolt of lightning. On the other hand, the maximum consumption of the whole machine should not exceed 12W, which should allow it to run for 7 hours on a single battery charge. Marketed with a price around 400 euros and supplied with Linux, it should find appeal among those on the move.
Note that Sony will also launch out into this very promising market segment with an entry level ultra portable.
As more advertisements fire off in all directions, it becomes less probable that Apple will take the risk with such a market since it could adversely affect its preferred market, Education in the United States.

E-Lead's Noahpad shows up with larger keys, multi-touch

We got a little hands-on time with Olympus's tiny E420 DSLR back at CeBIT, but the cam's now shipping and the crew at LetsGoDigitial put one through its paces. Intel introduces P45 and G45 Express chipsets

Sure, all the Intel action lately has been about Nehalem and Montevina, but that doesn't mean the company's not busy tweaking its existing products, and it introduced the new P45 Express and G45 Express chipsets today at Computex. The new chipsets all support FSB speeds of up to 1.3GHz and DDR3 RAM speeds of up to 1.66GHz and have PCI Express 2.0 slots, but the G43 and G45 include X4500 / X4500HD integrated graphics while the P43 and P45 do not. Intel Nehalem system demonstrated at Computex

It doesn't look as if much has changed with Nehalem since Intel showed the thing off at IDF, but rather than staring at still images and imagining just how fast said processor can churn through data, TweakTown hosted up a video to really get the point across. According to them, the demo setup was wicked fast at everything it did, and while representatives wouldn't divulge the clock speed, whispers have it right around 3.2GHz. Intel debuts Z-P230 PATA SSD drive for netbooks and "nettops"

Hot on the heels of SanDisk, Intel has now trotted out some SSD drives of its own that it says are specifically designed for "value mobile and desktop systems such as netbooks and nettops."
