Sony Ericsson CEO: "big surprise" soon, no iPhone rivalry
Sony Ericsson chief Bert Nordberg in an interview (below) hinted that the company has a "big surprise" in store in the next few months. He couldn't say more in talking to GlobalAtlanta but is believed to be alluding to the PlayStation phone, a Gingerbread (Android 3.0) device with a large touchscreen and slide-out PSP-style controls. It may arrive as soon as October.

Bookeen's multitouch-equipped Cybook Orizon e-reader to launch next month
Bookeen's been touting its Cybook Orizon e-reader since CES in January, but it looks like it's now finally, actually nearing a release. According to the company, the device will be available in "mid-October," and it'll boast a 6-inch multitouch screen with "reading quality close to that of paper." UTexas researchers develop organic battery, aim for week-long use in smartphones
Christopher Bielawski, a brilliant mind working at the University of Texas at Austin, had this to say about his newest discovery: "I would love it if my iPhone was thinner and lighter, and the battery lasted a month or even a week instead of a day; with an organic battery, it may be possible." NeuroSky shows off upcoming Mindwave headset, other new chip applications
We've seen plenty of applications for NeuroSky's brainwave-sensing chip already, but it looks like we're going to be seeing more. Luckily, some of these are pretty neat. A sweat-band embedded "Thket Brain Athlete" product will allow athletes and trainers to track concentration levels through a workout or through a particular activity (a golf swing, for instance) and analyze that performance later. An iPad app (for the Japanese market, we're assured) allows you to concentrate on a girl avatar until she kisses you. Just like real life! Apple's VP of worldwide product marketing, Phil Schiller, once came into conflict with Google while visiting the latter's offices several years ago, a source claims. The executive is said to have been at the building for a meeting, and as he entered, he was asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement common amongst Silicon Valley businesses. Schiller is then alleged to have made a "big deal" out of refusing, according to Silicon Alley Insider, insisting that he would either attend the meeting or sign the NDA, but not do both.

JetBlue to get in-air Wi-Fi before the end of 2012
JetBlue has become the latest airline company to announce it will bring Wi-Fi to its fleet. The company, which flies across the US, will partner with ViaSat to install hardware that will enable broadband Internet and TV service on its 160 aircraft by the end of 2012. Before this happens, however, the FAA needs to test and approve all the gear.

3D printed Steve Jobs pixel bust for sale
For the Apple fan who has everything, here's a blockhead bust of Steve Jobs. It's been 3D printed by Dutch artist Metin Seven, and if the urge so hits you, you can buy your own online for just under $120. I'm not entirely sure what the bust is made out of, but 3D printing usually requires a mixture of molding powder and resin that hardens into a kind of brittle claylike material, but of course for display this thing looks fine.
It's not too tall, either -- 14x10x6 cm or so. Sounds perfect for displaying on a desk -- you can have your very own "one more thing" anytime you want.

BBC cautions parents against in-app downloads
The BBC series Watchdog is now warning parents against giving kids access to apps on iOS devices, even if the apps initially appear harmless. On a recent episode of the investigative show, the BBC noted that many apps marketed at children contain in-app download systems that charge real money, while giving the impression of costing only fake currency. This can potentially deceive children into making purchases that cost their parents hundreds of dollars or pounds.

Is this the Droid 2 World Edition / Droid Pro?
If you look quickly, you might not be able to tell that there's any difference between this thing and the Droid 2 that you can go out and buy today, but this thing is all about subtlety -- after all, the only obvious internal change is that it can be used globally. Android makes deep inroads into business, hurts BlackBerry
Android's footprint in the workplace has gone up 60 percent in just a few months, ChangeWave found in a study today. Only 10 percent of US companies used Android in May, but the number shot up to 16 percent in August. The iPhone was the only other platform to grow but moved up just slightly to 31 percent.

LG Vortex for Verizon in the wild?
It might be a little early to cue the "vortex of suck" jokes, but this spy shot definitely says it all: the phone -- claimed to be called Vortex -- is decidedly on the lower end of Verizon's Android spectrum. The Droid Guy, source of the photo, says that the specs include a 600MHz core, 3.2-inch display, FM radio, and Froyo; that basically matches up with the recently-announced Optimus One's spec sheet, and considering the similarity in industrial design, it's reasonable to follow the site's conclusion that this little more than a CDMA port of the device. iPads complement primary computers, threaten secondary ones
Here's a bit of news that you might have already figured out for yourself. Your primary computer doesn't need to feel threatened by your iPad. Sure, your Mac (or PC) probably felt a little uneasy when you brought that slim. trim, shiny, and lets not forget - magical - little number into your home, but it knew, oh yes it did, that you would come crawling back sooner or later. The Sims 3: Ambitions adds a few new things to the mix that you couldn't do in previous versions. It beefs up your Sim's career paths and options, including firefighter, chef, musician, athlete and artist. EA's also added the option to have babies in this new iPhone iteration. Dropbox brings out BlackBerry app, updates others
Dropbox, which provides apps for mobile devices that let users share files and documents, today released its first app for BlackBerry phones as well as Android and iOS updates. The new Dropbox for BlackBerry app can be downloaded today and includes core features such as upload progress, file sync and more. Novatel's Ovation MC545 modem suggest extremely fast things come in small packages
The next (and most likely last) step in extending the lifespan of 3G data is dual-carrier HSPA, a technology not unlike using two modems at the same time to effectively double the width of the pipe. Sports Illustrated: Cost-cutting has hindered iPad app
If you're a regular reader of the Sports Illustrated (SI) publication for the iPad, you may have noticed something unusual / different in the latest issue. The SI iPad edition is now only viewable in landscape mode, no longer supporting portrait mode as it did in previous issues. If you hold your iPad in landscape mode and then turn it to portrait mode the message, "This page is intended to be viewed in landscape mode. (There's nothing wrong with your iPad -- just turn it horizontally.)" appears.

Apple supply manager proposes bond of over $600,000
Apple supply manager Paul Shin Devine, accused of taking kickbacks from suppliers, has proposed a bond of $612,407 taken from foreign bank accounts in order secure a temporary release from jail. Pledged as collateral is the equity of Devine's home near San Francisco, and the home of his mother, located in Maryland. Defense lawyer Raphael Goldman claims that most conditions for release have been met.

Sprint outs EVO 4G and Hero updates, EVO framerate cap might be solved
Last time we checked in on this problem, HTC had said that the EVO 4G's 30fps cap on video output simply couldn't be increased -- but it seems the latest firmware update might prove otherwise. Dell confirms 7-inch Looking Glass tablet early
Dell's namesake chief Michael Dell confirmed [sub. required] the company's 7-inch Looking Glass tablet today at Oracle's conference. He didn't provide more details other than to say it would run Android like the Streak. Dell also didn't mention ship dates and other details.

Hasselblad outs H4D-31 and CFV-50, wants 200MP cam in 2011
Hasselblad swept through a series of new medium format camera systems at the Photokina show along with a tease of a 200-megapixel camera next year. The H4D-31 is one of the company's cheapest ever complete cameras and shoots at 31 megapixels while still sharing all the features of the larger models, including the off-center focusing adjustment that defines the H4D line. It will cost 9,995 euros ($13,416) with either an 80mm prime lens or a CF-mount lens adapter to use existing Hasselblad optics.

Rumor: Apple to build 3 million CDMA iPhones in December
Jeffrey Fidacaro with Susquehanna Financial Group has claimed that Apple is prepared to begin assembling CDMA iPhones in December, and will produce 3 million units for a 2011 launch -- such phones would obviously be intended for a CDMA carrier like Verizon or Sprint.
Furthermore, as AI reports, Fidacaro expects Apple to crank out 11.6 million iPhones in the fourth quarter of FY 2010, which would be a new record for Apple, and a 39% increase from Q3 in FY 2010.

Mailplane 2.2 adds several key features
Mailplane, the native Mac app for Gmail and Google Apps email, has been updated to version 2.2, adding several new features and improving on others.
Leading the charge is support for the recently-released "Priority Inbox." You can now tell Mailplane to open either your regular inbox, Priority Inbox, or a custom label.
My favorite new feature is the ability to drag a Mailplane URL directly from the title bar. I use this with BusyCal's URL field if I need to connect an email with a meeting. It works for conversations or searches.

Adobe CEO claims 'muted' impact from loosened app rules
Apple's decision to loosen App Store rules and once again permit third-party development tools has had a "muted" impact on Adobe, at least in the short term, according to the latter company's CEO. Distributor KT Corporation announced this week that the iPhone has sold more than 1 million units in South Korea. It took 9 months for that many units to fly off the shelves, and doesn't include sales of the iPhone 4.

Netflix on Wednesday launched its Canadian service that lets residents sign up for Watch Instantly streaming movies and TV shows. New study questions extent of iPod-induced hearing loss
Have you heard? Apparently iPods cause hearing loss. A Journal of the American Medical Association study published in August found that 14.9 percent of teenagers aged 12-19 suffered from hearing loss from 1988-94; 19.5 percent of the same age group had hearing loss from 2005-06. Throw in another statistic, a 100 percent increase in the number of iPods in existence from 2005-06 as compared to 1988-94, and it's clear what's behind this statistically significant rise in teen hearing loss.

Apple's FileMaker division has posted a new version of FileMaker Go for the iPhone and iPad, v1.1. The latest revision to FileMaker's two mobile database apps, FileMaker Go 1.1 for iPhone and for iPad (two separate products), gives the Go team a few vital new features for users on the move. Netflix launches in Canada today: streaming only service for $7.99 per month

Apple said building 3 million CDMA iPhones in December
Susquehanna analyst Jeffrey Fidacaro today claimed in a research note that Apple will make three million CDMA iPhones in December. Checks with Asian suppliers led him to believe the company is queuing up the large amount in anticipation of a launch in early 2011. Combined with GSM models, as many as 21 million to 22 million iPhones could be produced in the last three months of the year.

Lost iPhone investigation almost done
We could finally be nearing the end of the lost iPhone saga. Way back in April, police launched a probe into the alleged sale of the lost prototype iPhone 4 that was found in a bar near San Jose earlier this year, and CNET is now reporting that the investigation is almost over. Chief Deputy District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe of California's San Mateo County says that the final report on the probe could be sent to his office in the next few weeks, at which point he'll look at what evidence was collected and see if charges need to be brought.

Mit dem iPhone verdient Apple mehr Geld als jeder andere Mobiltelefonhersteller. Im ersten Halbjahr 2010 verkaufte Apple 17 Millionen iPhones, bei über 600 Millionen verkauften Handys entspricht dies einem Marktanteil (nach Stückzahlen) von weniger als drei Prozent. Zwei Drittel aller verkauften Mobiltelefone stammen von den Marktführern Nokia, Samsung und LG. Ganz anders sieht das Bild aus, wenn man einen Blick auf die erwirtschafteten Gewinne wirft. Auf Nokia, Samsung und LG entfallen zusammengezählt bescheidene 32 Prozent der Gewinne der gesamten Industrie. Apple kommt hingegen auf stolze 39 Prozent der Profite, verdient also mehr als die drei weltweit grössten Handyhersteller zusammen. Dieses Ungleichgewicht liegt primär darin begründet, dass viele Mobiltelefonhersteller mit extrem tiefen Margen operieren. Neben Apple sind RIM und HTC offenbar die einzigen grossen Hersteller, welche Gewinnspannen im zweistelligen Prozentbereich erzielen.

TUAW's Daily App: Undercroft
Undercroft is an iPhone RPG that's reminiscent of the old Elder Scrolls games; it's turn based, and seen from a first-person perspective (even though you actually play a party of adventurers). This is strictly fantasy fare, and it doesn't do a lot that's new. For the first few quests, you're fighting rats and spiders, and you'll need to level up, deal with loot, and do lots and lots of exploring and quest completing before getting anywhere. But as traditional as it is, it's actually a lot of fun, and the retro format translates well to the iPhone's touchscreen. We've seen elsewhere that the iPhone can do next-gen games, but it's nice to see older forms like this finding a tidy home on the App Store.

VG Wort erringt Teilerfolg im Streit um pauschale Abgaben auf Drucker
Die VG Wort hat mit ihrer Verfassungsbeschwerde gegen eine Entscheidung des Bundesgerichtshofs von 2007 Erfolg gehabt. Das Bundesverfassungsgericht hat die Sache an den Bundesgerichtshof zurückverwiesen. Der soll nun prüfen, ob sie dem Europäischen Gerichtshof zur Vorabentscheidung vorzulegen ist. iPhone cracks 1 million mark in Korea
South Korea's KT this week said it had passed one million iPhone sales after nine months of having the device in the country. The marker was passed on August 16, almost a month before the Korean iPhone 4 launch, and is known to be accelerating with the launch of the current model. KT is still trying to fulfill the now 350,000 back orders for the iPhone 4 and expects to have reached 1.2 million sales by early October.

For the seventh straight year in a row, Apple has topped the American Customer Satisfaction Index survey, ringing in at number one on the annual list of PC manufacturers as ranked by customers. Adobe meldet Rekordumsatz im dritten Fiskalquartal

Facebook for iOS updated, fixes what last update broke
A previous update of Facebook's iOS app completely messed up a handful of features, particularly its push notification services. I'd be browsing through status updates, exit out of the app, and see a notification badge had popped up. Curious to see what was new, I'd go back into the app and check out the notifications only to find notifications for stuff I'd already read. This wasn't a "once in a while" kind of bug, either; it happened nearly every time I used the app.

One great thing about being owned by Sprint is that you can sneak a handset here and there into your own lineup, which is exactly what Virgin Mobile has done in adding the midrange Intercept from Samsung to its range. Actually, it's not in the range just yet -- Virgin's Facebook page says that we should "stay tuned over the next few weeks" to find out the details, which leads us to believe we might see a launch (or at least a launch date announcement) around CTIA early next month. Olympus Zuiko-equipped compact camera eyes-on: optical zoom, HDMI spotted
Olympus' PR branch left us digging for details when announcing the outfit's new Zuiko-equipped camera, a concept piece that's actually on track for the real world in early 2011. It seems as if this, along with Fujifilm's FinePix X100, is carving out a new niche in the compact space. It lacks the flexibility of Micro Four Thirds / mirrorless, but it packs a bigger quality punch than any other point-and-shoot on the market. Clear WiMAX is live in New York City
Sprint and Clearwire's WiMAX service has been making occasional cameos throughout the five boroughs since at least June, but now it's official: the service has been launched, closing up one of the most conspicuous holes in coverage so far. aTV Flash 4.2 for AppleTV adds Last.fm app
FireCore has launched aTV Flash 4.2, updating the Apple TV hack with support for Last.fm's music streaming service. aTV Flash is primarily devoted to enabling formats such AVI, MKV, WMV and VIDEO_TS, normally incompatible with Apple's firmware. It also adds a WebKit-based web browser, and permits expanded storage using an external USB hard drive.

Leica outs two rebadged Panasonic digital cameras
At Photokina on Tuesday, Leica added two new compact cameras in the V-Lux 2 and D-Lux 5. The two are luxury versions of existing cameras from Panasonic, namely the Lumix FZ100 and LX5, respectively. The former has a 14-megapixel CMOS sensor and 24x optical zoom and can record 1080i video at 11fps, just like the FZ100.

Forums: VLC media player for the iPad?
A new thread by Andy8 asks if anyone has used the VLC media player for the iPad with .avi movies yet, so far the response has been rather limited. RIM may unveil BlackBerry tablet as soon as Monday
RIM may use BlackBerry DevCon to unveil its repeatedly rumored BlackBerry-related tablet. A San Francisco event on Monday, before the conference in earnest, is said to be very secretive by ZDNet and might precede the actual keynotes for the event, which start with co-CEO Mike Lazaridis' presentation at Moscone Center West. While not necessarily a revelation by itself, it would come just as major companies like Citrix are reportedly promoting services and other products that would support a RIM tablet when ready.

TUAW Giveaway: Bugger puts repeated reminders in your pocket
Given the number of things you have to keep track of in a day, sometimes a simple task manager -- the kind that reminds you once and then waits until the next day to tickle you again -- doesn't seem adequate. If you wish you had a snooze button for your tasks, maybe Bugger (US$0.99) is worth a look.
