Bohemian Coding has released a new vector drawing application, Sketch 1.0. The title relies on a minimalist design, foregoing palettes and panels. It does however have unlimited layers, and drop-down menus for access to tools and modifiers. Ten pre-defined shapes are included, which can be customized or added to by users. Shapes are composed of objects, like vectors, pictures, or text, which are designated as symbols.

iPod nano code hints at possible video playback
It may not be anything more than a bit of excess or leftover code, but it looks like there's at least a hint of some possible video playback capabilities lying deep in the code for the new iPod nano (the internal settings property list, to be specific). As discovered by Erica Sadun over at TUAW, that includes options for things like TV subtitles, captions and alternate audio, and even a fit-to-screen option -- for the perfectly square aspect ratio of the nano's screen, perhaps? Of course, there doesn't seem to be an option to actually make video watchable on a 1.5-inch screen.

4th-gen iPod touch teardown shows stealth antenna
iFixit continued its investigation of the latest round of iPods today with a teardown of the fourth-generation iPod touch. Going deeper than the FCC look, the repair shop confirmed that the Wi-Fi antenna has been moved to the front, eliminating the need for the black plastic window on earlier models. It also confirms that Apple is using Toshiba flash memory for the main storage on the iPod; other Apple devices usually depend on Samsung.

News: iPod touch 4G teardown: Only 256MB of RAM

On the heels of iOS 4.1's release, Apple has posted still more downloads related to the firmware. Qualcomm: iPad killed smartbooks, dual 1.5GHz in late 2011
Qualcomm chief Paul Jacobs made remarks today indirectly acknowledging that the iPad had all but eliminated the smartbook category. During an event, he argued that tablets like Apple's had displaced the smartbook category Qualcomm had been trying to make through devices like the Lenovo Skylight by achieving the same goal. App downloads prepare to overwhelm song sales
App downloads should match and actually surpass song downloads at the iTunes Store sometime this year, says asymco. The analysis and production firm notes that during Apple's September 1st press event, the company released new growth statistics, indicating downloads of over 6 billion apps. asymco remarks that apps have managed to achieve in two years what for music took five.

Have you been to VersionTracker.com lately? If you try today, you'll be redirected to the CNET site, where you'll get a brief explanation that the venerable VersionTracker site is now a branded part of the CNET empire.

iPod touch (2010) torn down, found to contain an awful lot of battery
As predictable as the sun rising somewhere over east Japan, the iFixit crew have put their tools and wits to the task of deconstructing the latest generation of iPod touch. Their teardown is still ongoing (exciting, isn't it?), but here are their observations so far. The new touch is noted as being the easiest to crack open yet, and yes, its retina-busting 640 x 960 LCD is fused to the external glass, just like the iPhone 4. There's an 11-gram EMI shield between the front end and the battery, accounting for a lofty 10 percent of the portable media player's weight. Games updated for Game Center (soon)
As you might have noticed if you've added a few friends in Apple's new Game Center service, the backbone social components are working great. But where, exactly, are all of the games? Developers have actually had access to Apple's service for quite a while now -- it was introduced to them under NDA way back at WWDC. But for some reason, Apple seems to be waiting on approving Game Center-enabled games.
Fortunately, they're coming, probably as soon as Apple can approve them. Touch Arcade forum member Project-79 has been keeping track of which games have said that they'll be Game Center-enabled. As soon as updates roll out for games like Field Runners,

iMovie updated to 1.1, requires iOS 4.1
Apple's official iMovie app for iPhone has been updated to version 1.1. The new update requires iOS 4.1, but it makes the app compatible with the new iPod touch, and adds the ability to split up video clips, automatically loop music for a longer video, as well as an updated Photos browser. There are a few other upgrades to help performance and reliability, and a few tips and indicators to help you use the app. High Dynamic Range photography is new in iOS 4.1, but since HDR requires multiple exposures of a still picture, there's nothing in the new iMovie that will make videos look better in the same way.
Current users can of course go upgrade it right now in the App Store, and the app itself can be purchased for US $4.99. Enjoy the update!

New iPod touch has vibration motor
FCC pictures of the brand new iPod touch's internal tech show that the device has a vibrating motor inside of it. According to Apple, the motor will be used with FaceTime, but presumably, it'll work when any app calls for vibration. That should help for gaming -- neither the DS nor the PSP has any sort of vibration feedback, and that's a feature that has become more or less standard on game consoles.
This also brings the iPod touch in line with most of what the iPhone has. Besides the cell service (obviously), the GPS, and the mute switch, the iPod touch really is, as even Steve commented at last week's event, "an iPhone without the contract."

OnStar expected to add Facebook updates and texting soon, might make some services free
Time waits for no infotainment system and GM's OnStar seems to be well aware of that fact. Plunging headfirst into the social world, the driver assistance service is said to be planning to start conveying Facebook status updates and text messages in an upcoming update, reputedly landing later this month. Text-to-speech translation will be done on incoming notes and voice-to-text is said to be undergoing testing for outgoing updates. So you can tell your friends you're free as a bird, born to run, rocking the highway, or whatever else, without ever having to speak to them directly or going to the effort of typing anything. Apple widens lead in satisfaction for computers, phones
Apple today managed to hold on to and in some cases widen its lead in a reader-guided study of satisfaction with their computers and mobile devices. The company's MacBooks led the way in PC Mag's studies with an overall score of 9.2; the figure was the highest in any category, not just notebooks, and kept it in front of ASUS' 8.5. Most sat between 7.9 and 8.1, while HP's Compaq label trailed the pack at 7.3.

A gallery of iOS 4.1 update screenshots
If you're stuck at work and can't update your iPhone or iPod touch to iOS 4.1 yet, feast your eyes on the gallery below. I was able to take some screenshots of the notes for the update as well as get some shots of Game Center, the HD YouTube movie upload capability, and the new HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography setting in the Photo app.
As noted in the gallery titles, I wasn't able to actually find any Game Center games -- the button in the Game Center app shows nothing just yet. That's not a good sign for the first day. At least we can all get signed up and befriend each other. We'll keep an eye out for any games that get GC-enabled as soon as they're ready.
I plan on tinkering with the HDR photography quite a bit over the next few days. I could have used it during

Google Instant on a Motorola Droid 2, hands-on
Google's new hotness is likely invading your desktop web search right now, but what's Instant search like on a smartphone? We got a good look at a Verizon-based Droid 2 running a prototype version of the auto-complete engine on both WiFi and 3G, and we're happy to say it's just about the same -- assuming you've got a decent connection and a reasonable amount of screen real estate. Apple replaces 5K nano batteries in Japan
Back in 2008, reports of fires that were caused by overheating batteries in first generation iPod nanos caught the attention of Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (MEI). In turn, MEI ordered Apple to replace defective units. Apple conceded and launched a replacement program in August of 2010. Since then, according to the Mainichi Daily News, Apple has replaced over 5,000 batteries.

Hands on (and in) the iPod nano 6th generation reveals hints of video playback support
This morning, I headed over to the Apple Store and picked up a sweet little green iPod nano to play with. (Thank you, red-headed Molly!) The nano is basically the size and weight of a 2G shuffle, with a cute little touch screen and a couple of buttons for volume control and Sleep/Wake. Of course, I was just as interested in what was inside the nano -- at least from a software perspective.
The interface is easy to use once you get comfortable with the lack of a Home button (you swipe to switch screens) and certain GUI changes (switch buttons are smaller and look slightly different from their standard iOS cousins). Google at its special event today rolled out Google Instant, its codename for a live, as-you-type search. The method provides results on the fly and auto-suggests search queries based on the exact characters. Wie angekündigt hat Apple soeben das zum Teil sehnlichst erwartete iOS-Update «iOS 4.1» veröffentlicht. Bei kompatiblen Geräten (iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 und iPod touches ab 2. Generation) wird das Update ab sofort via iTunes angeboten. Das Update ist gut 300 MG gross und kann alternativ auch via apple.com geladen werden. Das Update bringt neben dem Game Center (für alle Geräte ausser iPhone 3G) und der Möglichkeit auf dem iPhone 4 HDR-Fotos zu erzeugen vor allem auch zahlreiche Fehlerbehebungen und Verbesserungen bei der Geschwindigkeit — vor allem für das iPhone 3G. AT&T surprised at slow Torch sales while Android, iPhone win
AT&T's President of Wireless Operations in the US West, Fred Devereux, hinted today that sales of the BlackBerry Torch were disappointing. He told those at Seattle's Mobile Future Forward conference that he was "surprised there hasn't been a faster adoption" of the phone, which he thought was the best-ever BlackBerry to date. iFixit tears down a new iPod shuffle
Whenever Apple releases new hardware, I start to anticipate iFixit's inevitable teardown. This time they've gotten into the iPod shuffle to show us the very small number of tiny parts that keep users rocking.
Much like the Magic Trackpad, there isn't much to see inside the new shuffle. The guys admit that getting the shuffle apart wasn't easy. "It took us a good half hour of prying and heat-gunning to open the little guy." The front and back cases were glued and press-fit together. It's a solid little device.

Meizu appears to be readying another Apple clone, the M9 II, which has appeared in teaser photos posted by company head J. Wong. Interestingly enough, the executive claims Apple's new iPod touch "looks a bit like the M9 II." Sunrise Telephone Systems has announced its 2010 version of Asterisk for Mac OS X. The software is a port of the Linux version, and allows a Mac to host a private branch exchange -- PBX -- telephone system and VoIP server. Samsung outs Cortex A9 dual-core to power next gen devices
Samsung today unveiled its new 1GHz ARM Cortex A9-based dual core processor, codenamed Orion, for ëadvanced mobile applicationsí. Highlighting the generational leap in performance, Orion is capable of simultaneously supporting two on-device display screens, while driving a third external display such as a TV or monitor through an HDMI interface. Built on a 45nm process, each 1GHz core is equipped with a 32KB data cache and a 32KB instruction cache. Also integrated is 1MB of L2 cache, which is designed to optimize multitasking.

iPad triggering PC sales slowdown, memory overstocks?
Samsung on Tuesday warned that a slowdown in computer sales was close to triggering an oversupply of RAM. While the company's semiconductor head Kwon Oh-hyun said that phones and servers were keeping the supply-and-demand balance "stable," a continued slowdown of the PC business could create a glut in the fall or in the winter. Prices had already started falling in July after Greece's debt problems and an overall unexpected economic slowdown.

Intel may add USB 3.0 to chipsets next week
Taiwan's Commercial Times today claimed that Intel will launch its first native USB 3.0 chipset at next week's Intel Developer Forum. Its Cougar Point chipset for desktops using Sandy Bridge processors will get the faster bus speeds and should help accelerate the adoption of the newer standard in computers. When it would ship wasn't mentioned, but Intel has already promised a late 2010 launch and is informally expected to ship in November.

Apple has managed to clamp down on several of the early flaws of Ping, reports say. Initially the network was hit by a wave of spam, often pointing people to outside URLs with the promise of free iPads, iPods and iPhones. Fourth-generation iPod touches begin shipping [u]

Analyst: BlackBerry use at work facing new low
BlackBerry adoption at work is dropping fast, Goldman Sachs analyst Simona Jankowski warned on Tuesday. In a study tracking corporate plans for the next six months, plans to shrink their BlackBerry use grew from just four percent last October to 21 percent in August. Meanwhile, those who wanted to expand BlackBerry use dropped to 54 percent, down from 68 percent a year earlier.

QuickBooks 2011 for Mac set for September 27
Intuit has unveiled QuickBooks 2011 for Mac, the next version of its small-business accountancy software. New in the upgrade is the concept of multiple user accounts, which allows up to five workers to view or edit content at the same time. Samsung may use Google TV to chase Apple, Sony
Samsung admitted at a forum today that the company was considering developing Google TV hardware. TV group leader Yoon Boo Keun told the media Samsung was "reviewing" the prospect of using the Android-based shell but was anxious about support in South Korea. HP Zeen tablet may lack Google apps, come in printer bundle

Mophie confirms Juice Pack Air for iPhone 4
As speculated last week, Mophie has released a Juice Pack Air case that doubles as an auxiliary battery for the iPhone 4. The seventh in the line, the pack is made of soft-touch plastic and can nearly double the battery life of the iPhone 4. The pack is said to provide up to six hours of extra talk time on 3G networks and up to 12 hours on 2G, with up to 36 hours of added music or nine hours of video.

Energizer intros Qi wireless power for iPhone, BlackBerry
As promised, Energizer today rolled out the Inductive Charger. The plate uses the Qi standard to charge the BlackBerry Curve 8900 and the iPhone 3G/3GS without wires. Both smartphones need a special add-on, either a battery door for the Curve or a full case for the iPhone, but never need to switch back; the iPhone case appears to block the Dock Connector, however.

IDC: iPhone to drop to 11% share by 2014 while Android rises
Apple's share in the smartphone will settle down over the next few years while Android makes a fast rise, IDC predicted today. Researchers expect the iPhone to drop from 14.7 percent today to 10.9 percent by 2014. Android would account for most of the switch, as it would overtake the BlackBerry and claim second place with 24.6 percent.

Samsung adds faster moviNAND flash for smartphones
At a forum in Taiwan, Samsung announced it will soon switch to using high-performance 8GB and 16GB moviNAND embedded memory chips in its smartphones. The new memory will be the first to fully meet the latest JEDEC standard for embedded flash. Apple Japan replaces over 5,000 batteries in August
After launching a replacement program for iPod nanos on the 11th, Apple Japan replaced exactly 4,994 batteries during the remainder of August, according to documents from the country's industry ministry. A total of 5,527 batteries were replaced during the entire month; the number compares against 232 in July however, and just 62 in June. The figure suggests that thousands of people are taking advantage of the Nano program.

UBS nearly doubles forecast for AT&T iPhone activations
A UBS analyst, John Hodulik, has significantly raised an estimate for how many iPhones AT&T will activate by the end of the September quarter. The number has has almost doubled from an earlier forecast, shifting from 2.5 million to 4.5 million. During the recent June quarter, AT&T activated roughly 3.2 million iPhones. The iPhone 4 only launched in the US on June 24th though, giving the model little chance to have an impact on Apple's latest financial report.

To celebrate and coincide with its fifth-year anniversary, Eye-Fi has announced a new Developer Program that will expand its wireless SD card platform. 4th-gen iPod shuffle torn down, found tough to fix
DIY repair shop iFixit today posted a teardown of the new iPod shuffle that reveals an extremely tight if limited construction. The device took about half an hour to pry open as the clip was both press-fit into the body and glued at the same time; while sturdy, it guaranteed that anyone would have to "break it" to open it. To save on space, Apple has also soldered the battery directly to the circuit board and uses very small connectors that could easily snap if the explorer isn't careful.

RIM confirms buying most of DataViz, may shut out rivals
RIM today confirmed a rumor from the weekend that it had acquired much of DataViz in a deal that could shake up professional mobile apps. The company in a statement said it had bought only some of the company's assets but was hiring most of the Documents To Go developer's staff to support the BlackBerry. Apple's iPad isn't just hurting netbooks but notebook sales as a whole, UBS analyst Maynard Um told investors today. Antenna problems tangibly affecting iPhone 4 sales?
Even if the iPhone may be doing well as a rule, flaws in the iPhone 4's antenna design may be having a noticeable effect on sales, suggests Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. The firm recently interviewed 258 people in Minneapolis on the topic, of whom 69 percent were aware of a quality issue. Galaxy Tab using iPad-grade display, may hop to AMOLED
Samsung's Galaxy Tab is already using an LCD on the level of the iPad's and should jump to AMOLED in the future, Digitimes analyst Mingchi Kuo claimed today. Both Samsung itself and E Ink's Hydis division have been supplying the seven-inch tablet with a display that uses the same combination of IPS (in-plane switching) and FFS (fringe field switching) as Apple's tablet, just in a smaller size. The addition will give it both color accuracy and the wide viewing angles that have been credited to the iPad's success.

Cyberduck adds cloud file management improvements
My FTP app of choice, Cyberduck, has updated to version 3.6, and as you can see on the changelog, it's a nice, chunky update. The developers have added in support for Google Storage, made things easier for Amazon S3 users, and added a lot of little features and bugfixes that make the whole experience easier and more compatible with other apps and platforms.
I still like Cyberduck as an app -- a lot of Mac users praise the heck out of Transmit, and it's also a very nice app, but I like supporting open source (and don't mind the free downloads, either). And Cyberduck is still growing -- they just recently anno

Here's two tips for the new iTunes 10 that you might not have seen yet. First up, 9to5Mac shares the news that you can now plug any iOS device with music on it into iTunes 10 and listen in to whatever music is available without having to enable "manual sync mode." That's a nice bonus -- if you're at a party, and your friend wants to hear a tune you're carrying around on the iPhone, you can just plug it in, hit play, and dance the night away. I presume all of the usual restrictions on sharing music are still there (music bought on one account can't be downloaded to another, obviously), but at least just for listening, iTunes 10 makes things much easier.

I actually picked up Skies of Glory a while back, but it wasn't until I finally nabbed my iPhone 4 this weekend that I got to see it running in its full, well, glory. Skies of Glory is a World War II air combat simulator -- it walks a nice line between simulation and arcade, as you don't need to worry too much about controlling the plane (the iPhone's accelerometer is used to great effect), but you'll still need to keep your bearings to take out enemies. It's challenging, but spending the time to get your plane lined up is actually pretty rewarding, not to mention that it's awesome to see a fully implemented air combat sim on the iPhone.

Thought that every iOS 4.1 device would be compatible with Apple's Game Center mobile and social gaming platform? We're sorry to say that's not the case. Initially it was looking like both the iPhone 3G and second-generation iPod touch would be left out, having to take their copies of Kickety-Kick Ball Bounce Out and go home. Along with the desktop version of Ping, you can also utilize Apple's new social network on your iPhone. It's actually proven to be my favorite method of using the service.
However, Apple does make it a bit difficult. At this time, you can't activate a Ping account from your phone -- it must be done through iTunes 10. Samsung Mobile Display promises 10x increase in production next year, end to AMOLED shortages
We already knew about Samsung's grand plans for expanding its display production in 2011, but now we also have a number to give us a sense of scale: 30 million. That's how many screens the new Mobile Display fab (set to go live in July) will be able to churn out in a month, a vastly superior rate than the current 3 million maximum. Apple-Updates: Safari, iWeb, MobileMe iDisk, Find my iPhone
In der Nacht auf heute hat Apple eine ganze Reihe an kleineren Software-Updates veröffentlicht. Über die in Mac OS X integrierte Softwareaktualisierung sind Safari 5.0.2 und iWeb 3.0.2 erhältlich. Das Safari-Update ist rund 39 Megabyte gross und enthält Kompatibilitäts- und Sicherheitsverbesserungen. Wer noch Safari 4 unter Tiger verwendet, kann das Update auf Safari-Version 4.1.2 laden. iWeb 3.0.2 wiegt 177 Megabyte und behebt einige kleinere Bugs, unter anderem ein Problem im Zusammenhang mit Uploads auf MobileMe.
Desweiteren hat Apple zwei seiner iPhone Apps aktualisiert. MobileMe iDisk 1.2.1 zeigt gedrehte Bilder nun beim Öffnen in der richtigen Orientierung an und Find my iPhone 1.0.1 bietet neben diversen Fehlerbehebungen Unterstützung für den neuen iPod touch.

India's $35 Android tablet reportedly on track for January launch

Extended iTunes song previews delayed, licensing may be to blame
One of the things that was widely rumored to appear but ultimately absent from Apple's music event last week was an extension of song previews on the iTunes Store from their current 30 seconds to 60 or even 90 seconds. According to CNET, we can blame the Byzantine licensing arrangement of the music industry (surprise, surprise).
Apple had a deal worked out with Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), all four major record companies, and a contract with American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) that never limited preview lengths in the first place. Apparently that still wasn't enough to increase preview lengths, because CNET says the National Music Publishers Association objected and basically said, "No, you have to make a deal with us, too."

Nikon Coolpix S8100 gets 1080p video, S80 sprouts an OLED touchscreen
In addition to the intriguing new Coolpix P7000, Nikon also announced the Coolpix S8100 (pictured above) and S80 tonight -- sure, they're not the dramatic new models, but they're certainly respectable updates to the S8000 and S70. iPod touch makes up 38% of iDevices shipped
Blogger asymco did a little calculating from last week's announcement numbers, and has hammered out a rough estimate of just how many of each iDevice are floating around the world today. Safari updated to 5.0.2
The good news is, the Safari 5.0.2 update fixes a passel of bugs and outstanding security issues. The bad news: like all Safari updates, which replace the underlying Webkit framework used by many Mac OS X apps to render HTML, this 39 MB update requires a restart.
Apple's notes on the update say that it "contains improvements to compatibility and security" including:
Fixes an issue that could prevent users from submitting web forms
Fixes an issue that could cause web content to display incorrectly when viewing a Google Image result with Flash 10.1 installed

Game Center is live... mostly
iPhone developers report that Apple's Game Center has finally gone live. Formerly limited to a sandbox-only development environment, accounts and friends that were created for the sandbox will not apply to the live production system on Apple's servers. Game Center is now prompting for new credentials -- and developers are sharing usernames on Twitter. Older accounts and friends were wiped out yesterday to prepare for the live system.
The server is reportedly having some start-up issues including connectivity and crashing issues, but developers who were limited before are now able to create full accounts and full-on matchups. Currently Game Center is live in 4.1, which we expect to arrive soon. Developers can submit Game Center applications to iTunes Connect using

Australian carriers feel heavy burden from iPhone 4
Stop us if you've heard this one. Apple releases the iPhone 4, and the tremendous demand from customers keeps store shelves bare. That's the case in Australia, where suppliers Telstra, Optus and Vodafone Hutchison Australia are struggling to keep up.
As online stores generate increasing backlogs, shipping times increase. As of this writing, most customers are being asked to wait between two and three weeks for their orders to arrive. Toshiba AC100 smartbook preview: what were you expecting?
Despite the downright sexy hardware, it was no surprise that the Toshiba AC100 (which has just been launched in the UK) didn't review very well: Android just isn't ready to give an enjoyable smartbook experience. Our hands-on experience with the laptop at IFA did nothing to disabuse us of this notion.
