Windows Phone 7 released to manufacturing, gets tweaks
Microsoft today said Windows Phone 7 had been released to manufacturing. The move gives phone makers a gold build of the mobile OS and also includes some important changes since a Technical Preview just weeks ago. Epic Games intros Project Sword tech demo for iOS devices
Epic Games has already released an app demonstrating the graphics capabilities of the upcoming Project Sword game that was announced alongside the fourth-generation iPod touch. The tech demo, Epic Citadel, utilizes Unreal Engine 3 to render a medieval town in great detail. Why is the Apple TV so expensive in Europe?
There are lots of disgruntled people in the UK this evening, following Apple's announcement that the new Apple TV, retailing for $99 in the US, will cost £99. If you subtract our sales tax (which is always quoted upfront, unlike in the US) that's the equivalent of $128, a rather excessive 28% hike. We're used to paying a premium for Apple goods here -- the graph above shows how much more expensive we are across all the new iPods and the entry level iMac and 15" Macbook Pro -- but it's normally around 7-10%. Special Event: Das neue Apple TV
Apple‘s Set-Top-Box namens Apple TV hat heute ebenfalls seine langersehnte Frischzellenkur erhalten. Entgegen so manchem Gerücht hat das Apple TV seinen Namen behalten und wurde nicht, wie vermutet in „iTV“ umbenannt.
Die neue Apple-TV-Box ist optisch komplett überarbeitet worden. Es ist nur noch knapp ein Viertel so groß, wie seine Vorgänger-Generation. So wie bei Apple in dieser Gerätegröße üblich, ist das Netzteil ins Gehäuse integriert. Laut Apple soll das Apple TV durch seine kompakte Bauweise kaum Abwärme produzieren und bleibt im Betrieb angenehm leise.

Zune HD could have all-new model in the works
The Zune HD continues to rank among our all-time favorites in terms of industrial design, so it's good to hear that Microsoft isn't entirely abandoning the PMP sector for its new Windows Phone 7 hotness. Apple's Ping network linked to trademark agreement
Apple's new Ping social network -- introduced alongside iTunes 10 -- required a special trademark agreement to make happen, a press statement reveals. Karsten Manufacturing notes that it technically owns the Ping name for one of its sub-brands, which produces golf equipment. Apple should only be able to use the Ping name in conjunction with the social network.

FCC insists original neutrality plan still in the cards
FCC officials today tossed rumors [sub. required] that they were softening plans for net neutrality regulation. An unnamed agency staffer told the WSJ that Chairman Julius Genachowski had "absolutely not" given up on the existing strategy of reclassifying some parts of Internet use to tighten regulation. A Credit Suisse investment analyst had claimed earlier in the day that the FCC was giving up and would please telecom companies by conceding to their demands.

iOS 4.2 to bring AirPlay, printing, iPad compatibility
Although iOS 4.1 is only set to launch next week, Apple also used today's press event to preview iOS 4.2. Apple iOS overtakes Linux for online share
Apple's iOS platform has managed to pass a major desktop OS for the first time in web use as it now has more share than Linux, Net Applications found today. It just took the lead in July but held and widened it in August, with iPads, iPhones and iPods taking 1.13 percent; Linux has declined to a new low at just 0.85 percent. The figure doesn't include Android, though it has far lower share at just 0.2 percent.

iPod touch outselling PSP and DS in games, not systems
During this morning's event, Steve Jobs tossed out the factoid that the iPod touch was trouncing traditional handheld gaming, claiming that the system had sold more than Nintendo and Sony's portables combined. Apple Special Event: Neue iPods, neues Apple TV, iTunes 10
Apple hat heute Abend eine ganze Palette an neuen Produkten eingeführt, wobei die Neuerungen ziemlich genau den Erwartungen im Vorfeld entsprechen.
iPod
Der iPod touch besitzt ab sofort ein Retina-Display, den Apple-A4-Prozessor, ein Gyroskop und eine Kamera mit FaceTime- und HD-Unterstützung. Ausserdem kommt der iPod touch mit iOS 4.1, welches das bereits im Sommer angekündigte Game Center beinhaltet. Im Vergleich zum Vorgänger ist der iPod touch nochmals eine Spur dünner und leichter geworden. Die Preise bewegen sich zwischen 279.- Franken für das Modell mit acht Gigabyte Speicher und CHF 529.- für die Ausführung mit 64 GB.
Am stärksten überarbeitet wurde indes der iPod nano. Dieser besitzt neu ein Multi-Touch-Interface anstelle des ClickWheels. Er ist nur halb so gross wie sein Vorgänger und besitzt den vom iPod shuffle bekannten Befestigungsclip. Der iPod nano verfügt ausserdem über ein integriertes FM-Radio und 24 Stunden Batterielaufzeit. Er ist in insgesamt sechs Farben zu Preisen ab 189.-

Game Center coming in iOS 4.1, Epic Games working on Project Sword
Steve Jobs just showed off some screenshots and functionality for Game Center, which will be officially releasing with iOS 4.1 next week. The official app will provide social networking features for App Store games, including friends lists, achievements, "auto matching" (the rest of the world calls that matchmaking), challenges and a host of other cross-platform features for gamers on Apple's mobile platform.
Jobs also invited a few gentlemen from Epic Games onstage to show off "Project Sword," a gorgeous title running in the Unreal Engine inside iOS. It's an action RPG title that's coming soon with full Game Center integration, and the demo featured practically instant multiplayer fighting from a third-person perspective, as well as first-person world exploration. Apple's AirPlay music streaming coming to third party speaker docks, receivers, and stereos
Steve didn't mention it during his keynote just now, but in addition to bringing AirPlay music streaming to iOS 4.2 and iTunes 10, Apple's also opening the tech up to third parties, with a few big names already on board. iPod touch (2010) first hands-on!
So we just got our hands on the new iPod touch and boy is it small. As you would expect, the functionality of the device is identical to the iPhone 4, as well as the functions of the front and back cameras. In essence, it's a much thinner iPhone 4, with no cell radio, of course. The design is relatively in keeping with previous touches, so no major surprises there, but the inclusion of that A4 chip, higher resolution screen, and front and back cameras makes it a far more versatile device. Apple TV switches to streaming, gains 99-cent HDTV rentals
Apple today exposed a major overhaul of the Apple TV, long the company's neglected "hobby" product. The new set-top is roughly a quarter the size of the original, and all black. It includes HDMI, USB, Ethernet and optical audio connections, as well as 802.11n Wi-Fi. In terms of interface it continues to use a button-based remote, and the firmware resembles earlier versions. iOS activations trump Android at 230,000 per day
Apple during its September 1 event directly took on Google's claims of having 160,000 activations per day. Company chief Steve Jobs joked that others "throw out a lot of numbers" but said Apple was activating 230,000 iOS devices per day. iPod nano first hands-on!
Here it is, the new (and completely redesigned) iPod nano. Super thin, super light, and really, the capacitive multitouch works very well. The screen is crisp and top menu navigation is smooth, but can't say we have great feel for moving back out of sub menus (via swipe or holding down the screen). Apple TV (2010) first look / hands-on!
So we had a chance to spend a little time with the new and improved (and dirt cheap) Apple TV, and we like what we see. The streaming was speedy and extremely clear during our demo, and the overall speed of the interface seemed really solid. We also learned that the box is indeed 720p (just as we'd reported earlier). Apple told us that they felt that using 720p allowed them to strike a balance between quality and bandwidth. We're guessing most people won't complain if the service works as advertised. iPad OS will be revved to 4.2 in November, unifies the line
During today's Apple event, Steve Jobs announced that the next version of the iPad flavor of iOS, 4.2, will be available as a free update in November 2010. The iOS 4.2 version will support the iPhone and iPod touch (4.0 friendly versions of those devices) in addition to the iPad.
Among the new features in 4.2 will be folder organization for apps on the iPad, bringing parity with the 4.x smaller devices.
Innovations include AirPlay, which will allow you to stream video and audio from iTunes to your iPad or from your iPad to the newly-announced Apple TV. Also added: printing! The iPad will be able to print to networked printers or printers connected to your computer, details TBD.

iPod Shuffle und iPod nano: Runderneuert, nano mit Display
Neuer, kleiner, besser: man hat sich nie auf seinen iPod-Lorbeeren ausgeruht und dadurch mit dem iPod einen Longseller etabliert, dessen Zeit noch längst nicht abgelaufen ist. Wirkliche Überraschungen gabs keine bei den beiden neuen iPod-Modellen, außer der kurzzeitigen Probleme seiner Steveness beim Drehen des quadratischen Displays des neuen iPod nanos.

Apple TV: Kleiner, billiger und ohne Festplatte
Apple hat seiner Fernseh-Settopbox einer Generalerneuerung unterzogen. Das neue Gerät ist deutlich geschrumpft und besitzt keine Festplatte mehr, sondern nur noch einen Flashspeicher. New AppleTV delivers on $99 price point, streaming
It's billed as "One More Hobby." It hasn't been a big hit, but those who used the Apple TV have shown affection for the device and provided Apple with valued feedback. Apple took this feedback and retooled the Apple TV into a smaller form-factor that clocks in at 1/4th the size of its first-generation sibling.
The power supply is built into the Apple TV along with HDMI and Ethernet connections, and onboard 802.11n WiFi support. It also includes an Apple remote.
The biggest change is that it's an all-rental model, with purchases no longer available. The rentals will all be high definition when available. There is no storage management, and all the content is streamed rather than synced -- including items you have on a desktop computer.

Apple intros touchscreen Nano, Shuffle with buttons

The Nano has seen the most radical changes, as it is now a square touchscreen device based on iOS, having completely jettisoned a clickwheel. Steve Jobs announced iTunes 10 today, complete with a new logo. The core interface does not receive much tweaking, however in the list view there is a hybrid view where if you have more than 5 songs from the same album, it will show you the album artwork.
Most of the new release's focus is on Ping, a social network for music. "It's like Facebook and Twitter meets iTunes," Jobs said. Jobs is right; it looks almost, but not quite Facebook. It's much like that service where you can follow friends, have a circle of friends and share what music you're listening to through the network. When following an artist, you can be alerted to their concert listings.

The new Apple TV
Steve Jobs just pulled out the world famous "one more thing" for nothing other than a new Apple TV. It's now a streaming-focused device with an in a small matte black enclosure we're calling "the hockey puck." It has HDMI, Ethernet, optical audio, and USB plugs around back, and of course 802.11n for the cable-averse. Inside there ain't much -- there's no local storage, which makes this thing an entirely different beast than old Apple TVs. Those new streaming HD TV rentals from ABC and Fox will be a mere 99 cents, while first run HD movies will be a less thrilling $4.99. Apple updates the iPod shuffle
At today's press event, Steve Jobs announced a full revamp of the iPod line. The new iPod shuffle is smaller than the 2nd generation device and brings back something that many users missed with the previous model. Specifically, buttons!
The new shuffle has a familiar-looking click wheel on the small postage-stamp shaped model that was introduced a few years ago. It will hold 15 hours of music, is available in 4 colors and sells for US$49. As of this writing, availability has not been announced. The iPod shuffle, and all models introduced today, will go on sale (pre-orders) today, with expected delivery next week.

FaceTime. It isn't just for iPhone any more. Not a huge surprise here, but Apple's just announced ITunes 10, complete with a brand new logo that finally ditches the CD. What is something of a surprise, however is the standout feature: Ping. That's Apple's take on a music-centered social network (think Last.fm), which will let you follow people (including artists), establish a "circle of friends," post comments, check out custom song and album charts, and even find over 17,000 concert listings. New iPod nano dumps scroll wheel for square screen
It's hip to be square. Announced today, the newly introduced iPod nano finally dispenses with the wheel as a control surface -- because now the control surface is the iPod touch. Apple announces the release of iOS 4.1
During today's press conference, Steve Jobs announced the release of iOS 4.1. The new operating system for iPhone and iPod touch comes with the following features:
High Dynamic Range photos: The phone will take three photos in rapid succession -- one at what the phone thinks is the normal image, one underexposed and the third overexposed. The image is then combined to create the high dynamic image. Mel Martin demonstrated the power of this type of program in July.

iPod nano redesigned: smaller, lighter, better and costing $149 for 8GB or $179 for 16GB
Apple has just revealed its 6th generation iPod nano, which has been outfitted with just about the boldest redesign the portable media player has experienced yet. Gone is the clickwheel, to be replaced with a touchscreen interface and a shuffle-esque square form factor. It's now 46 percent smaller and 42 percent lighter. Hard volume buttons on the side and a clip on the back provide the minimal hardware accouterments to that multitouch touchscreen, while the inside provides enough juice for 24 hours of audio playback. Apple ships 120 million iOS devices since iPhone's launch
Steve Jobs just dropped a few numbers on us. Firstly, that big one above, 120 million iOS devices have been shipped since the iPhone's debut back in 2007. 230,000 is the next number of significance -- that's the tally of daily iOS activations. IFA 2010: Sony Vaio 3D Prototyp

Erst nächstes Jahr soll es mit den 3D Vaio Laptops von Sony losgehen, aber wir haben auf der IFA schon mal einen gesehen (ihr damit auch). 16-Zoll 16:9 Display, Aussehen wie ein F-Series Vaio, aber das wird sich noch ändern und mit Bravia Shutter Brille mit Infrarot ausgerüstet. Mit der Playstation wird das Laptop leider nicht zusammenarbeiten, der erste Eindruck überzeugt aber schon mal.

3D Sony Vaio landing next year, we preview the prototype
See this computer here? Yeah, well Sony's going to launch a laptop next year that will most likely look nothing like this. Intrigued? We thought you would be. Sony announced today that it will be launching at least one laptop next year (probably a mini-series of 'em) with a 3D-capable 240Hz LCD. The laptop will be using a built-in IR blaster to sync with your regular Bravia shutter glasses, but it's unclear whether the price of a laptop will get you a free pair of the precious specs. The prototype we got to look at here has a 16-inch 16:9 display, housed in a current F series chassis, but all that is of course subject to change when the final model lands. Laut gamestar.de könnte es sein dass im Mediaplayer Quicktime (und zwar in der Windows-Version) eine absichtliche Backdoor versteckt ist, die Hackern ein Eindringen auf das jeweilige System erleichtern könnte. China verlangt ab sofort Ausweise von Handykäufern
Die drei chinesischen Telekommunikationsdienstleister China Mobile, China Unicom und China Telekom sind seit heute dazu verpflichtet, ihre Kunden mit Klarnamen zu registrieren. Sony outs S-Frame digital photo frames with AVCHD playback

Sony's new S-Frames touching down with AVCHD video playback
Try as we might, we can't totally dismiss Sony's new digiframes. Sure, we find the things kind of played out, but at least the S-Frame DPF-XR100 and DPF-VR100 models (due in November for $250 and $200) now offer AVCHD video support along with the usual 10.2-inch WSVGA LED backlight LCD display. If that weren't enough, the just announced DPF-D830 will also be out in November ($150), and while it doesn't support hi-def video, the 8-inch device is the company's first with a built-in rechargeable battery (up to 100 minutes). HP will mit CloudStart-Paket das Einrichten privater Clouds vereinfachen
Hewlett-Packard (HP) hat ein Komplettpaket für firmeninterne Private-Cloud-Systeme angekündigt. Microsoft confirms Arc Touch Mouse, takes digs at Apple
Microsoft today confirmed its repeatedly teased controller, the Arc Touch Mouse. The design is considered the first mouse to completely fold flat for travel and uses its namesake touch to achieve the goal: the center strip both serves for scrolling and as a multi-purpose area that handles middle-clicks and page up/down. Haptic feedback helps compensate for the absence of the detents that would normally accompany a physical scroll wheel.

Sony Bloggie Touch brings touch display, CMOS sensor
Sony rejuvenated its pocket camcorder mix today with the Bloggie Touch. The new model is almost exclusively controlled by a three-inch capacitive touchscreen that both provides a more flexible interface and reacts to whether it's used in portrait or landscape. Image quality is also important, as it uses a CMOS sensor that handles low light better than some others and shoots both 1080p video as well as 12.8-megapixel still images, or enough to challenge a regular photo camera.

Apple unable to keep up with iPhone 4 demand, say execs
Apple is still unable to cope with interest in the iPhone 4, two of the company's key executives indicate. A Deutsche Bank analyst, Chris Whitmore, recently met with CFO Peter Oppenheimer and senior VP of retail Ron Johnson to discuss the state of sales. "iPhone 4 demand remains very robust and despite efforts to close the supply-demand imbalance and the continued supply ramp, Apple still cannot meet iPhone demand," Whitmore says of the discussion.

Event streaming to stress-test new datacenter
Not much of a surprise, but nice to have some details: Cult of Mac cites a source close to Apple saying that the live stream of today's iPod event will be used to put some real-time load on Apple's new North Carolina data center. The facility isn't all the way operational quite yet, but it's apparently ready enough to play a major role in today's festivities.
The NC datacenter is five times the size of Apple's similar facility on the West Coast and is officially intended to support the iTunes music

HTC HD3 to be named HD7 in honor of Windows Phone 7, launch October 18?
Ooh boy, do we have a good one for you today. We've been tipped off that the HD3 -- HTC's mythical successor to the wildly popular HD2 -- is not only alive and kicking, but headed for a bright and sunny Windows Phone 7 future, starting as early as October 18. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, all the evidence we have for now is the above spreadsheet, which we're told is an internal planning doc from UK carrier O2. BSI-Chef plädiert für mehr Sicherheitsstandards
Michael Hange, Präsident des Bundesamtes für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI), hat für eine stärkere Standardisierung plädiert, um die Bereitstellung datenschutzfreundlicher Technologien zu unterstützen. Apple live stream a dry run for streaming iTunes to iOS?
Apple's decision to stream its event live is actually a cover for a test of eventual iTunes streaming, a rumor asserted today. The first-ever Apple stream in eight years is reported by Apple contacts to be a practice run for the North Carolina data center to see how well it copes with a heavy traffic load streaming to iOS devices. CoPilot GPS nav app adds ActiveTraffic
ALK Technologies today is releasing a new version of the CoPilot Live app with a feature called ActiveTraffic. It uses real time traffic flow information that mates with dynamic routing technology to get you to your destination by selecting alternate routes, then accurately estimating your new arrival time.
The traffic information comes from INRIX, which is a leading provider of traffic data. I tried the new app, and it certainly showed some traffic snarls. But here in southern Arizona, things don't get too dicey even at rush hour, so there wasn't any need to select a new route. I could see very detailed information in Phoenix, where traffic can be downright hellish.

People should not expect to see a new Apple TV shipping immediately after today's Apple press event, sources for the Australian edition of Macworld claim. The people moreover say that the device is retaining the Apple TV moniker, instead of switching to the iTV name as has been reported. I have a late 2008 MacBook Pro and a 4 year old MacBook Pro that I will be taking to Romania next month to give to my in-laws so we can video conference with them. Seeing as they are not very computer literate, I want to be able to perform remote control / screen sharing in case the need should arise.
I know that OSX has built-in screen sharing capabilities on a local network, but over the Internet is something else altogether. I know that there are several services, such as LogMeIn, that provide this service for a fee, but I was wondering if I could do this without paying for a service.
Can you direct me to some documentation as to how to set this up? ssh configuration, port forwarding on the firewall, etc. that might be able to get me started? Or make a recom

Lenovo launches AMD-packing IdeaPad U165 ultraportable in Czech Republic, nowhere else?
We weren't particularly impressed with the IdeaPad U160 when we recently reviewed it, giving it a score of five out of 10 thanks to disappointing battery life and a high price. Lenovo, it seems, looking to bridge that gap to a perfect score has announced the U165, which is apparently five more. NVIDIA developing graphics, southbridge chipset combo?
A source today hinted that NVIDIA might be developing a chipset that would work around Intel's current ban on what it can build. The design would combine a graphics core with the equivalent functions of a southbridge chip, which controls peripherals, audio and other features. DigiTimes understands it would still manage to take up less space than dedicated graphics and could shave $10 to $15 off the price of using one of Intel's southbridge chips.

Sony overhauls Readers with all-touch line, iOS/Android apps
Sony as expected today revamped its entire Reader lineup to hold on to its position in e-books. The five-inch Pocket Edition, six-inch Touch Edition and seven-inch Daily Edition all now use touchscreens and fix a common problem of glare with e-paper touchscreens: the new models have a single touch and display layer that should be easier to read without glare. You may not be familiar with the Internationalen Funkausstellung Berlin -- better known as IFA -- but it's a positively massive consumer electronics trade show with a European slant, and this year marks its 50th in the game. 3D television technologies and Android tablets are the early favorites to be the big themes at the show, but with LG, Samsung, and Sony all figuring prominently into the equation, it's anybody's guess what kinds of surprises we're going to see over the next few days. Im dritten und letzten Teil unseres Gerüchte-Überblickes im Vorfeld des heutigen Special Events geht es um ein Thema, welches in den letzten Monaten und Jahren regelmässig Gegenstand wilder Spekulationen war: Apple TV.
Apples Multimediabox hat unterdessen bereits einige Jahre auf dem Buckel und wurde von Apple stets eher stiefmütterlich behandelt. In den Augen von Steve Jobs war Apple TV für die Mac-Company bisher nichts weiteres als ein «Hobby». Mit einigen Neuerungen und Verbesserungen am Konzept könnte Apple TV aber durchaus zu einem interessanten Geschäftszweig für Apple werden. Solche Neuerungen sollen nun tatsächlich vor der Tür stehen.
Das neue Produkt soll mit dem bisherigen Apple TV nicht mehr viel gemein haben. Angeblich plant Apple gar einen Namenswechsel, iTV soll Apple TV ersetzen. Poor, poor Sony. First PSJailbreak splayed wide the PS3's security model, now PSGroove has arrived calling itself the "open source PSjailbreak." The code must first be downloaded and installed onto a $30ish AT90USBkey or a $25ish Teensy++ USB development board. After that, homebrew enthusiasts can then execute unsigned third-party apps and games on their PS3. At the moment, the ability to boot ISO files (read: pirated or "backup" games) is temporarily disabled. Road to Special Event: Neuerungen in iTunes?
Im zweiten Teil unseres Gerüchte-Überblickes im Vorfeld des heutigen Special Events dreht sich alles um iTunes. Schon in der Vergangenheit ging die Präsentation neuer iPod-Modelle häufig auch mit Neuerungen in der iTunes-Software einher.
Zwei Themen rund um iTunes wurden von den Gerüchteköchen in den letzten Tagen besonders heiss gekocht. Erstens werde Apple diverse Verbesserungen hinsichtlich der Bedienung des iTunes Stores vornehmen und es ermöglichen, auch über einen Browser auf den Store zuzugreifen. Zweitens plane Apple die Einführung eines Miet-Angebotes für TV-Serien.
Bereits seit knapp fünf Jahren ist es zumindest in den Vereinigten Staaten möglich, TV-Serien über den iTunes Store zu beziehen. Eine einzelne Episode kostet in der Regel 1.99 US-Doller, in HD-Auflösung sogar 2.99 US-Dollar.
Aktuellen Berichten zufolge wird Apple nun auch eine Mietoption zusätzlich zur Kaufmöglichkeit anbieten. Eine Folge soll dabei nur noch 99 Cents kosten und darf innerhalb von 48 Stunden beliebig oft abgespielt wer

Most of you noticed something a bit oddly specific about Apple's streaming announcement for the 9/1 event:
Apple(R) will broadcast its September 1 event online using Apple's industry-leading HTTP Live Streaming, which is based on open standards. Viewing requires either a Mac(R) running Safari(R) on Mac OS(R) X version 10.6 Snow Leopard(R), an iPhone(R) or iPod touch(R) running iOS 3.0 or higher, or an iPad[TM]. HP Wireless TV Connect pipes HDMI video over wireless
HP's unveilings tonight have been joined by a rare, truly cross-platform media add-on. ABC, Fox 'confirmed' for iTunes 99-cent TV rentals
Apple has managed to line up two major TV networks for its 99-cent iTunes TV rentals ahead of tomorrow's event, a late leak may have confirmed this evening. Previously undecided Fox as well as ABC have reportedly agreed to offer at least some of their shows. HP commercializing "memristor" computing technology
HP has announced a new partnership with Hynix Semiconductor that aims to commercialize its "remristor" technology. Exmovere shows off Exmobaby biosensor pajamas for babies, coming to retail in 2011
Baby monitors have become quite commonplace over the past 20 years or so, and come in many variations. Exmovere (a company that previously produced the wearable Chariot) has debuted a new type of monitor, however, which are actually part of the baby's pajamas, and which are said to help monitor heart rate, emotional state and behavior. The outift -- called Exmobaby -- uses the Zigbee wireless standard, effectively connecting the baby to the home wireless network, enabling the parents (or you know, whoever's around) to track the babies various states via icons on their mobile phones. Apple to stream video of tomorrow's live event
It looks like Apple has decided that it's finally time to let the public in on their press events -- the company will be streaming live footage from the event tomorrow on its website. Traditionally, the company has depended on third parties (like, ahem, us -- we'll still be metaliveblogging the event here on TUAW, don't worry), but it looks like tomorrow's event is free for everyone to watch.
That's assuming things all go to plan, of course -- it'll likely be tough for even Apple to keep up with the demand of streaming out live video to what must be millions of people around the world. Apple's PR release says that the stream will be up on Apple.com tomorrow at 10am PDT, and that it will

iPod nano touchscreen surfaces again in new video
The purported touchscreen for the next iPod nano has surfaced yet again in a new video, which also shows the alleged LCD cover for the next iPod touch. The video appears to show the same 1.7-inch touchscreen that has been linked in earlier rumors to the next-generation iPod nano or Shuffle, although the most recent reports lean toward a shrunken Nano.

Apple to stream event over HTML5 for iOS, Snow Leopard Macs
Apple provided a late surprise by revealing that it would stream its music event tomorrow through HTML5. The option will use the open HTTP Live Streaming format but, according to Apple, will need either iOS 3.0 or Mac OS X Snow Leopard or better to watch. Wall Street Journal confirms iTunes TV show rentals
TV shows and iTunes go back several years now, to October 2005. If iTunes TV show sales have not been as brisk over those five years as Apple and the studios might have hoped, perhaps a less expensive rental solution might introduce vigor to the TV market.
This afternoon, the Wall Street Journal has confirmed with "people familiar with the matter" that Apple is set to announce $0.99 rentals during tomorrow's media event. Rumors of iTunes TV rentals have been widespread over the last month.

Commodore USA to relaunch Amiga brand with series of AROS desktops
Barry's back, kids! The CEO of Commodore USA just informed us that, in addition to slapping Commodore stickers on various all-in-one PCs, he has acquired the rights to the Amiga name (we only hope that the process went a little smoother this time around). A new premium movie subscription service is being offered by Verizon via V CAST Video. For an additional $6 per month customers can add Crackle Movies to their V CAST subscription, providing access to on-demand movies from a mobile phone. Hey, do you hate reading? Well for the first time in history, Apple feels your pain. Tomorrow at 10AM PT, Apple will stream its live fall event directly to your Mac, iPhone, iPad, or iPod. Amazon seen planning unlimited movie, TV streaming
Amazon is planning to expand its Video On Demand service into a flat-rate, unlimited service, insiders said this evening [sub. required]. The plan pitched to NBC, Time Warner, Viacom and other studios would provide unmetered access to at least "some" movies and TV shows, according to Wall Street Journal contacts. BeamAtic Premium headlights let you keep you high beams on all night long
It looks like the highways of Japan could soon get a bit brighter -- at least if these new BeamAtic Premium head lights from Ichikoh Industries ever catch on. Developed by France's Valeo SA, the headlights make use of an on-board camera and some image processing software that tracks oncoming vehicles, and some movable dousers attached to the headlights that are able to deflect the light so it doesn't bother other drivers; the idea there being that you could simply leave your high beams on all the time without worrying about blinding anyone.
