Antec wants to rockus with its new soundscience 2.1 '3D' speakers
Yesterday it was Corsair, today it's the turn of Antec to step into the world of PC audio components. Best known for building cases and power supplies, the company's aiming to make a splash in this unexplored pool with its all-new soundscience brand and first product, the rockus 3D|2.1 speakers. We're guessing capital letters weren't high on the priority list here, with Antec instead opting to focus on delivering "immersive 3D soundscapes," the supposed aural equivalent of three-dimensional visuals. AMD may scrap annoying Windows notebook logo stickers
AMD may finally end a chronic problem with logos on Windows notebooks using its hardware, the chip maker commented today. Having discovered that most buyers don't like the stickers advertising processors, graphics and other parts, AMD hopes to now make the stickers easily removable sometime in 2011. It added to the New York Times that it was considering eliminating its share of stickers entirely, although it wouldn't say how likely that was.

iTunes 10 quick tip: Liking a song in Ping
Here's a quick tip for iTunes that puzzled a few of us this morning: once you've gone ahead and set up Ping in iTunes 10, how do you 'like' a song instead of an album? The albums have those handy thumbs-up buttons, but it's not as obvious for songs.
A bit of exploration reveals that the 'Like' command is under the pop-up menu for each song, along with the other song-specific actions like gifting, sharing, wish-list-adding and the 'Other Versions' search.

Courier 1.0 transfers files to cloud services
Realmac has launched a new filesharing utility, Courier 1.0. The software expedites moving files from a Mac to cloud services; at launch, it supports Flickr, Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo, Amazon S3, Ember and FTP/SFTP. The primary interface metaphor involves envelopes, which can be configured and saved for reuse. Each upload can be set for one or more destinations, using stamps on an envelope -- one stamp per service. Uploads are saved in history with URLs for later recall.

iTerm 2 in early development
Power users of the command-line are no doubt familiar with iTerm, the free replacement terminal application. iTerm has been the go-to alternative for people who wanted tabbed windows and other advanced features.
Development of iTerm has been fairly slow and irregular. The initial release was back in 2002 and the 0.10 release is almost a year old. A look at the version history shows very little has happened since 2006.

News: TV Show Rentals limited to iOS 4.1 devices
According to a support FAQ from Apple, rented TV Shows are limited to being played on devices running iOS 4.1 or later. Specifically, the FAQ indicates that rented TV shows downloaded via iTunes 10 can be played only on the computer, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS or iPod touch and HD TV rentals can only be played on the computer, iPhone 4 or iPod touch (4th generation) and that iOS 4.1 or later is required. All Things D: Facebook blocked Apple's Ping service for unauthorized use
We'd already heard whispers that Apple had to yank Facebook Connect integration from its new Ping music network because the connection was being denied by Facebook, and now Kara Swisher at All Things D is confirming it -- and she's saying Facebook shut down access on purpose after Apple used the find-your-friends API without permission. Google Music has yet to sign any labels for deals
A scoop this afternoon has reiterated that Google Music is on track for the end of the year but is also facing difficulty. The search engine's Android head Andy Rubin has been talking to labels with hopes of a launch before the holidays, but none of them have so far agreed to a deal. Reuters nonetheless understood that the studios were willing to keep talking as they saw Google possibly upsetting Apple's hegemony over digital music.

Fourth Mac OS X 10.6.5 beta adds Parallels to known issues
Apple is seeding a fourth developer build of Mac OS X 10.6.5, 10H535. Developers are being asked to concentrate testing on the same areas as before, including Mail, iCal, QuickTime, Time Machine, 3D rendering and USB devices. The known issue from the last build is still present, and has in fact been expanded to include Parallels as a culprit, alongside VMware. Having either of the virtualization platforms installed may prevent USB devices from working when a Mac comes out of sleep.

Samsung Galaxy Tab reported to retail at €699 and €799 in Europe
An increasing number of Euroland news outlets are reporting an eye-watering set of prices for Samsung's Galaxy Tab. Although still unofficial and therefore not yet to be trusted, the values we're hearing are €699 ($890) in France and €799 ($1,020) in Germany. Those presumably represent the cost of the 16GB and 32GB Tab, respectively, and align perfectly with Apple's iPad WiFi + 3G pricing -- aside from the fact the iPads have double the storage at each price point. WSJ: iPhone 4 to be offered by Vodafone and O2 in Germany as T-Mobile loses exclusivity

The features of the new Apple TV will not carry over to older models, an Apple spokesperson clarifies. No software update to enable the options is planned, although the representative does comment that all current features should continue to work. You're looking at Canon's new 4k "Multipurpose" concept, a wondrous amalgamation of still and video cameras pumping 60 frames per second at 4k resolution out of an 8 megapixel 2/3-inch CMOS sensor. Yep, we said 4k video, which means it offers approximately 4,000 pixels of horizontal resolution, or double the resolution of 1080p . We had a chance to go hands-on with the prototype at Canon Expo 2010, and believe us when we tell you that it's really, really sharp, both in terms of hardware and the images it produces. Samsung hints Android Honeycomb will be tablet-optimized
Samsung in a brief talk on Thursday both confirmed a future Android codename and hinted at its tablet focus. In confirming that it hoped to upgrade the Galaxy Tab to Android 3.0, nicknamed Gingerbread, product planning lead WP Hong told TechRadar the next version would be Honeycomb. Mophie Juice Pack for iPhone 4 coming next week?

iOS 4.1 with HDR built-in comes as a shock to HDR app developers
If I had to make a list of the top ten features I thought would be included in the iOS 4.1 update, HDR photography would not have been on it. HDR really came out of the blue, and one developer told me he was 'shocked' to hear that the feature was included in the next iPhone update.
Let's back up a minute. HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography is a method where pictures are taken at different exposures and combined into one image. Samsung: 'we are prioritizing our Android platform'
Samsung may be one of the big players that Microsoft is pinning its hopes on for Windows Phone 7, but you wouldn't know that from listening to the company at IFA. Walkman temporarily outsells iPod in Japan
Sony's Walkman line has temporarily passed the iPod for sales in Japan once more, researchers at BCN claimed today. Basic players like the S640 helped Sony creep past in August with 47.8 of sales where Apple dropped to 44 percent. Set up your own Priority Inbox with Apple's Mail
Last month, Google released Priority Inbox, a system that learns which messages are the most important to you and highlights them automatically over time. It's in beta right now and Google is slowly turning it on for its users. If you're tired of waiting, or if you use Apple's Mail and not Gmail, you'll appreciate this setup from Ben Brooks.
Ben explains how a combination of rules acts as his "priority inbox" for Mail. He's got some basic rules in place, like one that identifies messages from Apple and one that files backups away. Others are more clever.

Verizon officially announces prepaid smartphone data packages
After a flood of leaks, Verizon's just officially announced its prepaid data plan for smartphones. The new 3G Prepaid data package will offer smartphone users "unlimited" data for $30 a month, while feature phone users can score 25MB of data a month for $10 with a 20-cent-per-meg overage fee -- all contract-free, of course. Five dislikes plus five likes equals iTunes 10
Before I get rolling here, let me warn you -- I'm not a frequent user of iTunes. I don't spend all of my time purchasing new music, videos, and movies, nor do I obsess over creating playlists to share with my friends.
However, I do use it often enough that after firing up iTunes 10 last night, I immediately found some things I wasn't fond of and some other items I quickly loved. Am I going to lose sleep over the things I don't like? Nope. But I hope that it gets TUAW readers thinking about what they like and dislike about the new iteration of iTunes.

Skype updates Android app for Verizon users, lets you keep the WiFi on
Well, it looks like you still won't be able to actually make calls over WiFi, but Verizon Android users can now at least keep their WiFi connection active while using Skype Mobile -- something that was curiously not possible before. That's just one of the improvements in the latest version of the app (also updated for BlackBerry), which also includes features like incoming caller ID, support for copy and paste and emoticons in IM conversations, and the ability to automatically set your location as your mood message.

Toshiba Folio 100 preview
We just got to handle the Folio 100, after witnessing it bolted to a wall earlier, and we have to admit that it's lighter and thinner than it looks at first glance. Unfortunately, it still feels pretty cheap, and we're not sure how much we trust ourselves one-handing something this large and fragile seeming. Our brief glimpse of Toshiba's custom skin on here was most depressing -- it's not final, but we're not sure why Toshiba is even bothering showing anything in this abysmal state. O2, Vodafone expected to enter German iPhone market
Deutsche Telekom-owned carrier T-Mobile will soon lose its exclusive hold over German iPhone sales, sources tell the Wall Street Journal. Toshiba jumps into tablet space with Folio 100
Toshiba after months of teases confirmed its launch into the mobile tablet space through the Folio 100. The 10-inch tablet runs a heavily modified version of Android 2.2 and is one of the first major shipping devices to use NVIDIA's Tegra 2. Google intros final Chrome 6 with new speed, simpler UI
Just after the two-year anniversary of its Chrome browser, Google on Thursday released a new Chrome 6 stable build for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. Its engine is faster than for Chrome 5 and a full three times faster than the 2008 browser originally was in JavaScript performance. Apple has jumped into the social media pool with both feet by introducing Ping to iTunes 10. Since this is brand-new, we'll show you how to set it up and start pinging your friends. Whatever that means.
After installing iTunes 10, you'll see the Ping button. Click it to enter your Apple ID and begin the process of creating your profile. It'll pull the information stored on the account, like name and address, but fortunately you can edit it. You can add a photo to represent yourself as well. There are many PhotoBooth-style filters available, so have fun playing around.

Samsung favors Android, marginalizes Windows Phone 7

Official Twitter app updated for iPad
A few months ago, Twitter announced that they had acquired Tweetie and the web (I refuse to use the word "blogosphere" because it is a stupid word) exploded with predictions that they had effectively killed off the market for 3rd party Twitter applications.

Auf Special Event gezeigte Epic-Demo im App Store
Im Rahmen der gestrigen Ankündigung des neuen Game Centers auf Apples Special Event gab es eine beeindruckende Technologiedemo von Epic Games. Mike Capps von Epic führte das noch nicht fertig entwickelte Actionspiel Project Sword vor, welches auf der Unreal-3-Engine basiert und eine für iPhone-Apps bisher unerreichte Grafikqualität bieten soll. Zwar dürfte das fertige Spiel erst kurz vor Weihnachten veröffentlicht werden, eine kostenlose Demo lässt sich aber unter dem Namen Epic Citadel bereits über den App Store herunterladen. Mindest-Voraussetzung ist ein iPad, ein iPhone 3GS oder ein iPod touch der dritten Generation.

Apple TV found using A4 processor
A brief check of the Apple TV's technical specifications reveals that it is actually based on an A4 processor, like the iPad, iPhone 4 and the new iPod touch. The architecture is an ARM design customized by Apple, nominally with mobile products in mind. In the Apple TV it replaces a relatively low-grade Intel chipset.

A new IDC study today has put Apple at the top of environmental friendliness for phone makers. It managed to challenge other, ostensibly greener companies through the scale of its iPhone efforts. Warum es mit Geek Out jetzt doch nicht weitergeht
Geek macht dicht, Geek Out ist wieder da - und jetzt geht es doch nicht weiter? Ja, leider. Warum? Der Plan war eigentlich, dass hier zwei Autoren und ein Geldgeber als Parrtner einsteigen. Doch daraus wird leider nichts. Ich erspare Ihnen die Details. Und die Idee, dieses Seite allein weiterzuführen, funktioniert nicht. Neben Dreharbeiten stecke ich in mehreren Audio-, Mac- und iOS-Projekten, die viel Zeit und Arbeit erfordern. Schliesslich muss ich auch ein bisschen Geld verdienen. Ich habe den Relaunch einfach zu früh angekündigt. Das war ein Fehler, für den ich mich entschuldige. Das ganze Hin-und-her hätte ich Ihnen (und mir) gern erspart. Aber man lernt eben nie aus. IFA: Samsung Galaxy Tab kostet 799 Euro

Web-Nutzung: iOS überholt Linux
Erstmals surfen mehr Anwender mit iOS-Geräten als mit Linux-Systemen durch das Web. Philips Cinema 21:9 Platinum 3D megadisplay eyes-on
There are some things that you just long for irrationally in a sort of trade-your-next-10-years-of-Christmas-presents sort of way, and this new 3D Cinema 21:9 Platinum HDTV from Philips is one of those things. We just got a few too-brief minutes alone with the 58-inch set, where it proved itself quite an excellent 3D display -- it's hard to differentiate exact 3D quality without another display nearby for reference, but we didn't see any issues or worry points with the image quality offhand. Billboard nominates music app awards
Billboard has announced that it will be giving awards out for iOS music apps (of all things). At the Music App Summit on October 5th, Billboard will choose winning iOS apps in six different categories, from Best Artist App and Best Music Creation App to Best Branded Music App. You can find the full list of nominees after the break, and there are some recognizable names on there, including a Phish touring app, TUAW favorite I am T-Pain, and the now Disney-owned Tap Tap Revenge.

Samsung this morning finally took the wraps from the Galaxy Tab, its first tablet and the first major competitor to the iPad. The device revolves around its seven-inch, 1024x600 LCD and is Samsung's first handheld to ship with Android 2.2 -- and Flash 10.1 -- out of the box. Sharp shows off mobile prototype with 3D screen, 3D camera, and 3D output
We've seen enough home theater 3D already to be well and sick of it, but mobile 3D is still an upcoming sector, one which Sharp seems to be making a bid for. It's showing off a mobile device prototype (it looks like it could be your friendly neighborhood carrier's next Android handset) with a glasses-free 3D parallax screen (akin to the tech used in the Nintendo 3DS), a 3D camera around back, and 3D output over HDMI. The result isn't stellar -- just because a mobile device is shooting grainy, color-bleeding footage in 3D doesn't make the footage stop being grainy and color-bleeding -- but it most certainly works, as we witnessed both on the device's own screen and on a regular glasse

TUAW's Daily App: Super Mega Worm
Sometimes you roll along, having a pretty good day and sometimes, you just want a giant worm to rise up out of the ground and destroy everything. Super Mega Worm is for that second type of day. (You'll have to find something else for the first -- Doodle Jump, perhaps?) It's a game where you control a gigantic worm on a 2D field. You use a slider (or the accelerometer) to direct it through the soil and up onto the surface of the Earth, where puny little humans await their inevitable destruction. The game is funny in a morbid way; you end up cheering for the little worm as it grows (and learns new abilities) over time, and eventually, you'll find yourself reveling in the destruction of the human race.

ViewSonic hasn't settled on a name for this thing yet, vacillating between the ViewPad 100 and the ViewPad 10i. What it has settled on is a pretty delicious for factor for an Atom N455-based Windows 7 tablet, and the dual boot option to Android is really just gravy. China verlangt ab sofort Ausweise von SIM-Karten-Käufern

Druckermarkt wächst im zweiten Quartal um 14 Prozent
Die Druckerindustrie hat laut IDC im zweiten Quartal 2010 erstmals seit Anfang 2000 wieder ein zweistelliges Wachstum bei Umsatz und Stückzahlen verzeichnet. Microsoft wird erneut ein Family Pack von Windows 7 anbieten, das zum reduzierten Preis drei Lizenzen der Home-Premium-Version des Betriebssystems enthält. Bereits für gestern hatte Apple die Medienverwaltung iTunes in Version 10 angekündigt, doch durch die Zeitverschiebung war die Software hierzulande erst im Laufe der Nacht als Download verfügbar. Motorola hat den Nachfolger seines Android-Smartphones Milestone bekannt gegeben. Das Milestone 2 läuft unter Android 2.2 und wird von einer 1-GHz-CPU von Texas Instruments angetrieben. In what amounts to yet another co-branding marketing kerfuffle, Philips and O'Neill have teamed up on a foursome of so-called durable headphones. The Stretch headphones (pictured) are the toughest of the bunch, constructed from an ultra-durable, temperature-resistant, and awesome-sounding material called TR 55LX that boasts a surface hardness six times greater than the polycarbonate stuff found in most headphones. Panasonic announces speedy new 8GB, 16GB UHS-I SDHC cards
We've already heard some of the claims made about SHDC cards using the new UHS-I specification, and it looks like we'll now soon have our first actual cards based on the spec courtesy of Panasonic. The company has just announced some 8GB and 16GB UHS-I SDHC cards at IFA, which boast a Class 10 speed specification and promise to deliver a maximum data transfer speed of 60MB/s, or about twice that of Panasonic's current top-end cards. Twitter tonight posted its long awaited iPad update (free, App Store). The now universal app borrows the side navigation bar of Tweetie for Mac but has its own unique interface elements rarely or never seen in an iPad app, including slide-out panes. 4G iPod touch at FCC shows internal, insulated antenna
In sync with the launch of the fourth-generation iPod touch, the FCC has posted Apple's filing for approval in the US. The shots show that the iPod touch manages to have a completely internal antenna despite the lack of the black plastic covering from the back. It also notes that the antenna has an insulator to reduce interference, though this is more likely to be for internal interference since the steel back isn't known to be used for reception.

It's not just the new iPod touch that's gotten the FCC treatment today -- what we can only assume is the new Apple TV has also just turned up in some newly published documents from the agency. Unfortunately, there's no pictures this time around (internal or otherwise), but there are a number of test reports that confirm that the device does indeed pack Bluetooth and dual-band WiFi (802.11 b/g/n at 2.4GHz and 802.11 a/n at 5GHz). Booyah releases InCrowd for iPhone and iPod touch
Booyah has released an iPhone and iPod touch version of its Facebook game, InCrowd, and it's now available on the App Store. We'll admit, we'd kinda figured that HTC's venture into the seedy underworld of dumbphones with the introduction of the Smart earlier this year was a non-starter and that it'd quietly fade into the night before 2010 was out, but apparently not -- at least, not if you ask AT&T. Amazon follows Apple with 99-cent TV rentals of its own
Amazon today revealed that Apple's 99-cent iTunes TV rentals weren't an exclusive by offering 99-cent Amazon VOD rentals of its own. As with Apple's plans, Amazon has both ABC and Fox providing shows, although the online retailer's ability to rival iTunes is mixed. Amazon VOD can play on the web and on multiple set-top boxes like the TiVo, but only some of its shows are in HD where Apple promises 720p.

iPhone "definitely" coming to T-Mobile US, G2 pricing leaked
Persistent talk of an iPhone for T-Mobile USA gained a minor assist with a rumor this morning. An unnamed Examiner contact said that there had been "problems with the carrier" but that there would now "definitely" be a version for the second-largest American GSM carrier. The unconfirmed tip had the iPhone reaching the network early in 2011.

Boxee Box priced at $199, Avner Ronen says it'll give users 'freedom to watch to watch what you want'

Our homey Avner Ronen from Boxee just posted up a little response to Apple's $99 next-gen Apple TV announcement, and he's letting it slip that the much-anticipated Boxee Box will be $100 more than Apple's device, or $199. One more Zune HD coming in 2011?
Microsoft may give the Zune HD one last try, but not for some time, a source hinted Wednesday. The device mentioned to ZDNet would, as predicted, use at least some of Windows Phone 7 but wouldn't ship until sometime in 2011. Given its early development, most hardware was unknown, although it would keep using an ARM processor much like the NVIDIA Tegra used today.

iPod classic remains unchanged in wave of updates
Despite today updating the Touch as well as the Nano and Shuffle, Apple has left the iPod classic unchanged. The player currently holds about 160GB worth of music and video, and supports up to 36 hours of audio playback. These specifications are no different from the ones announced during last year's iPod refresh.
