Did malware cause the crash of Spanair Flight JK 5022?
The inquiry into the August 2008 crash of Spanair Flight JK 5022 at Barajas Airport in Madrid took a bizarre turn recently when Spanish daily El Pais reported that the server that the airline used to track technical problems on aircraft contained malware. Although the flaps and slats were not in the proper position for takeoff, the crew was never alerted -- causing the flight to go down moments after takeoff, killing all but 18 of the 172 on board. iPhone 4 due in China on September 16th?
China Unicom will officially launch the iPhone 4 on September 16th, a local source claims. While the carrier is generally believed to have set plans in motion, it has yet to formally announce details. A launch on the 16th would come just a little over a month after the availability of the first Wi-Fi-equipped Chinese iPhones.

Flux 3 web design software adds rich HTML5, WebKit support
The Escapers has released a major update to its web design software, Flux 3. The design application is HTML5 based and offers Web 2.0 and AJAX. Users can drag and drop to create websites in the WYSIWYG editor -- XHTML and CSS is supported, but not required by Flux for building sites. Java actions and QuickTime and Flash embeds are also supported and editing can be done fully through FTP or SFTP.

Softpress Systems has launched an upgrade to its web design software, Freeway 5.5. The application offers fast layout and design, with support for embedded images and other content. Scheme sees PayPal accounts drained via iTunes charges
Some people are finding their PayPal accounts emptied of hundreds or thousands of dollars because of fraudulent iTunes purchases, reports reveal. One person complains of having been charged over $4,700, in a bill linked to almost 50 PayPal receipts worth $99.99 each. A more conventional example is a San Francisco woman, who was billed $650. By catching and reporting the problem early, it should be possible to get Apple or PayPal to reverse unwanted transactions.

Sigma SD15 DSLR gets reviewed: unique, but not for everybody
Sigma's certainly managed to get plenty of photographers' attention with its line of Foveon sensor-equipped digital cameras, but it hasn't exactly always managed to meet expectations. Android's new app licensing scheme apparently easy to break
Remember that new licensing service for third-party developers that Google started advertising last month? A new exposé on Android Police claims that it's actually pretty easy to get around -- easy enough so that the crack could probably be packaged into some sort of automated script that breaks protected apps en masse for distribution through pirate-friendly channels. MSI: Windows tablet not due until 2011, netbooks in decline
MSI this afternoon said it wouldn't ship its Windows 7 tablet, the WindPad 100, until next year. The company's Andy Tung told Engadget that the slate won't ship until Intel's Oak Trail Atom platform is ready at the start of 2011. Current Atom hardware is too battery-hungry and slow for MSI's goals, he said.

Government, enterprise Mac sales surge
Apple continues to show tremendous growth in the enterprise and government markets, as Mac sales spiked sharply over the last three months.
AppleInsider cites a report from Charlie Wolf of Needham & Company this week that Apple saw a 200.8% year-over-year growth in government sales for the month of July. That's a huge number, and significantly higher than the 12.1% of growth that PC sales showed over the same period.
Likewise, sales grew 49.8% in the business market during the same time period. Large companies out-purchased small businesses, picking up 98.3 more Macs than they did in the previous year.

HTC EVO 4G suffering occasional micro-USB port issues?

Valve denies having a Linux version of Steam in the works
It was a beautiful dream, and someone even went to the trouble of pushing some decent proof, but for now at least Valve is denying any Linux version of Steam in the works. Apple rumor roundup: iTV, next-generation iPod touch
It's a new week, and with that comes a new batch of Apple rumors. This time we've got more hints about the forthcoming Apple TV (or is it "iTV") and what could be a new iPod touch screen.
First, Digg co-founder Kevin Rose has been chatting up the new Apple TV. According to Rose, it will be launched in September and "change everything." He says that we can expect iOS apps, a la carte offerings from the major networks (goodbye, cable bill) and MobileMe picture and video sharing.

Patent depicts multiple modes for touchscreen iMac
Apple could be planning to introduce touchscreens to the iMac by way of a hybrid interface, a recently discovered patent application suggests. The company notes that despite the usefulness of a touch interface, a mouse- and keyboard-based one is still better in some circumstances. To switch between the two, Apple proposes a design in which a computer's display would be upright for the mouse interface, but slanted down and back for touch.

At last, Steve Jobs may demolish old home
1984 wasn't just a landmark year for Apple, but it was also the year that Steve Jobs bought an aging mansion. Jobs lived in the house, originally built in the 1920s, for 10 years then rented it out. Since 2001, he's tried to get the mansion torn down to build a new home, saying that it was "

Buffalo intros new DriveStation NAS devices
Buffalo on Monday detailed the upcoming release of updated DriveStation Duo and DriveStation Quad direct attached storage. The latter replaces the DriveStation Quattro range, and a new Axis series of single-drive storage devices was also announced. The DriveStation Duo contains two eSATA 3.0 drives and has a USB 2.0 interface that supports up to 225MBps speeds. Tools are not require to remove or install the quick-swap drives, and they can be set up in either RAID 0 or 1 for either redundant backup or added capacity.

E-voting whistleblower Hari Prasad arrested, taken to Mumbai for questioning
In America, when you demonstrate what a racket e-voting is, you get to play Pac-Man. In India? You just might get arrested. Government, business Mac sales surge
Macs saw unusually high levels of government and business interest during the June quarter, says Needham analyst Charlie Wolf. Looking back at figures, Wolf notes that government Mac sales grew a colossal 200.8 percent year-over-year, over 16 times faster than the rest of the PC market's 12.1 percent. Business sales of Macs grew by 49.8 percent, topping the industry's 15.7 percent.

Intel debuts dual-core Atom N550 processor, 70 million Atom netbook chips shipped so far
Intel first made mention of its upcoming dual-core Atom for netbooks back at Computex, and now it's making good on its promise with the ready-to-ship Atom N550. The chip operates at 1.5GHz, with 1MB of cache and support for DDR3 memory, and "similar" battery life to the Atom N450. Intel is billing it as a more "responsive" experience, which will make sense as a selling point to anyone who has attempted any serious multitasking on a netbook. Study claims 90% of iPad buyers already own Apple gear
Very few iPad buyers so far are new to Apple hardware, Strategy Analytics said in a new study. Where 18 percent of those with iPhones, iPods or Macs plan to get an iPad within a year, only two percent of those foreign to Apple devices plan to do the same. Apple is chiefly "preaching to the converted" at the early stage, Principal Analyst David Mercer said.

Case in point: Samsung's Galaxy Tab was innocently doing some testing rounds through Sydney recently, only to be happened upon by the Electronista scribes, who diligently videotaped it -- seemingly without the knowledge of the tablet's possessor. Kodak wrapped up its launches today by adding its highest-end pocket camcorder to date. The PlayTouch centers on a three-inch, capacitive touchscreen that moves almost all the control to the display rather than the back. Kodak today rolled out a camera with a social networking component the 14-megapixel EasyShare M590. Using an on-board tagging tool, users can tag a photo for upload to Facebook, Flickr, Orkut, YouTube, and Kodak Gallery. It also allows photos to be tagged to an e-mail account and sent directly to an internet-enabled digital photo frame. Acer exec thinks iPad market share will fall to 20%
Acer chairman JT Wang today predicted that Apple would drop to just 20 to 30 percent of the tablet market in the near future. The executive anticipated that the presence of both Acer's tablets and others to make the iPad a minority once the market 'settles.' Technically speaking, we already know what Toshiba's Smart Pad will look like. It was waved around in Australia briefly, and these shots seem to match it perfectly, but corroboration for their validity is otherwise light on the ground. Apple plant App zum Sperren freigeschalteter iPhones
Apple hat ein Patent für eine Anwendung beantragt, die den unautorisierten Zugriff auf elektronische Geräte wie iPhone und iPod erkennen kann. Werden verdächtige Nutzeraktivitäten erkannt, schränkt die Software einzelne Funktionen automatisch ein. Intraincom: den Funklöchern den Kampf angesagt
Intraincom, ein Konsortium bestehend aus der SBB und den drei Schweizer Mobilfunkanbietern Swisscom, Sunrise und Orange steht dieser Tage wieder vermehrt im Rampenlicht. Bereits vor wenigen Jahren hatte dieses Konsortium dafür gesorgt, dass bei SBB-Wägen GPS-Receiver installiert werden, um diese Daten besser an die in den Wagen vorhandenen Geräte zu leiten. Jetzt hat das Konsortium, so SDA, den Funklöchern den Kampf angesagt: bis 2015 sollen diese der Vergangenheit angehören. Aktuell befindet sich das Vorhaben noch in der Verhandlungsphase. Die Kosten — über 50 Millionen Schweizer Franken — werden noch verhandelt. Ziel ist es, die 3G-Netzqualität in den Zugswagen zu verbessern. Angeblich schwächen die speziell beschichteten Fenster in den Zugswagen die 3G-Funkwellen um den Faktor 1000 ab. In den nächsten fünf Jahren sollen deshalb Wagen direkt mobile 3G-Antennen erhalten, die den Funkverkehr ins innere der Wagen leiten können. Schwedische Justiz zieht Haftbefehl gegen Wikileaks-Gründer zurück
Schwedische Strafverfolgungsbehörden haben am Wochenende einen Haftbefehl gegen den Wikileaks-Gründer Julian Assange aufgehoben. In February 2009, Arron La's $0.99 Advanced Task Manager was one of the first paid apps on Android, allowing T-Mobile G1 users to do what was then a novel thing -- close applications. Viacom exec jumps to News Corp.'s iPad project
News Corp. has begun moving executives around to start up its iPad-focused news service, a leaked memo confirmed this evening. Viacom's digital distribution head Greg Clayman is said moving in the AllThingsD note to a "new venture" that is known to be the corporation's national digital-only news outlet. The New York Post's executive editor, Jesse Angelo, will reportedly moonlight in a similar position at the new project.

Redspotgames has plans for further Dreamcast development
Whether you're still lugging around that old Dreamcast, or you have a new-fangled mod or an emulator of some sort handy, have heart: you're not the only one keeping the dream alive! If the kids at Redspotgames have their way, they'll keep publishing games for the venerable (and defunct) console -- that is, according to marketing and sales director Adrian Loudero, who spent some time chatting with Joystiq at Gamescon last week. Confirmed: Galaxy S unlock codes are stored in your phone, Vibrant capable of AT&T 3G
Sure, the Samsung Vibrant's a T-Mobile device and the Samsung Captivate belongs to AT&T, but there's no longer any reason you can't swap them around -- all you need is a simple script and a USB cable to completely unlock your phone. Dagentooboy of XDA-Developers discovered that Galaxy S unlock codes aren't kept in a secure remote server, but merely stored in a .BAK file on the device itself, which you find with a hex editor and key right in when inserting a new SIM card of your choice. Quality and the setup process
There's not much to say about the iAdapt HDMI V2's design other than that it's well-built; it's clearly meant to match the current aluminum and white aesthetic spread across most of the current Mac line. The cabling is thick and unlikely to fray or break unless you bend it to a clearly unreasonable angle.

Review: Kanex iAdapt HDMI V2 Mini DP to HDMI adapter
With every 2010 Mac and even some Windows PCs now supporting audio through Mini DisplayPort, it was about time that adapters readily exist to feed that output to its most logical destination: an HDMI-equipped TV. Apogee has stepped up to the plate with its own adapter cable that can put full audio and video through a single pipe. We'll find out how that works in our review of the Kanex iAdapt HDMI V2.

No fair: Gizmodo editor leaves his phone in a restaurant, gets it back right away
