RIM ships 11.2 million BlackBerries, hints two new phones
RIM today broke another company record as it shipped 11.2 million BlackBerries in its spring quarter. The milestone was a 43 percent spike over results a year ago and also saw RIM sell its 100 millionth BlackBerry since it began selling the devices as phones. About 4.9 million of these were new to BlackBerry service, and 46 million BlackBerry accounts are still active.

iPad 3G lawsuit expands to include more buyers
A lawsuit directed against Apple and AT&T, originally filed earlier this month, has been amended and resubmitted to potentially become a class action case, says the New York Times. The plaintiffs -- Adam Weisblatt, Joe Hanna and David Turk -- allege that Apple and AT&T "baited" them into buying an iPad 3G with the promise of pre-paid, unlimited data, "only to have that promise reneged upon within weeks of their purchases." AT&T imposed caps on most iPad users beginning June 7th, only allowing unlimited data for earlier customers on automatic renewal.

Libox service to share content to any web-connected device
The recently launched Libox service promises to make sharing videos, photos and music on different and incompatible portable electronic devices possible. The founder, Erez Pilosof, wanted a less "tedious and problematic" media sharing solution. Firm calls 29 Android apps spyware-like as Google pulls two
At least 29 apps on Android Market have system level access that would be considered spyware on a PC, S Mobile Systems claimed in a warning study. When installed, the app group gave enough permission that they could represent serious privacy and security breaches. In one example, a mobile banking app was deliberately malicious and ultimately sent login data from an account to the developer's site.

Reception problems not exclusive to iPhone 4?
The reception problems people are experiencing with the iPhone 4 are not exclusive to the device, a new video suggests. A number of reports have said that when gripping an iPhone 4 in a particular way, namely with part of the palm over the lower-left corner, that signal strength drops or disappears. The word is BIG. Big lines, probably 4 times what they were last year for the 3GS roll-out. I got to the Apple La Encantada store in Tucson at 6AM to find hundreds of people in both the reserved line and those hopefuls waiting without a reservation for an iPhone 4.
The crowd was calm, but anxious. As I talked to people waiting, I was surprised by how many people were not current iPhone users. There were many BlackBerry owners, and a sprinkling of Motorola and Verizon labeled phones. Some said their contracts had just expired, and it was time to get on the iPhone bandwagon.

Activision taking a wait-and-see approach to Kinect / Move, 'concerned' about high prices
To hear Microsoft and Sony tell it, you'd think that there's no question that Kinect and Playstation Move will each become as integral to their respective consoles as a regular controller is. iPhone 4 selling out, could top 1.5 million in one weekend
Apple is selling iPhone 4s quickly enough that some stores have already sold out before the end of the day, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster discovered today. A check in the morning found that nine of 20 Apple stores had already exhausted their stock, and all others expected to clear theirs by the end of the day. Adobe Audition for Mac confirmed

NVIDIA thanks Intel for saying GPUs are 'only' 14 times faster than CPUs
Well, we've gone a full month since the last episode of NVIDIA's and Intel's ongoing public feud, but it looks like Intel has now stoked the flames once again (albeit inadvertently) in a paper presented at the recent International Symposium on Computer Architecture. That attempted to debunk the "100X GPU vs. CPU myth," but it also contained the tidbit that GPUs are "only" up to 14 times faster than CPUs in running application kernels, which NVIDIA has more than a happily latched onto. iPhone, iPad poised to dominate much of Apple business
The Mac and iPod will likely continue to decline in importance for Apple, says Bullish Cross' Andy Zaky. The writer/analyst notes that the iPhone has been Apple's main source of revenue for about three quarters so far, while the Mac has been falling in relative importance even as its revenue grows. By the end of Apple's 2010 fiscal year in September, the iPhone is expected to account for 37.4 percent of revenue. The amount might have been 40.8 percent, says Zaky, if Apple had not introduced the iPad in April.

Gute Nachrichten die Erste. Vor nicht mal ein paar Stunden entdeckt, scheinen diese fiesen gelben Flecken auf dem Display des iPhone 4 vielleicht gar nicht so schlimm zu sein. Im AppleInsider Forum hat sich jemand gemeldet, der scheinbar ganz genau zu wissen scheint was da vor sich geht. Apple soll zur Bindung der verschiedenen Glasschichten "Organofunctional Silane Z-6011" benutzen und das nicht völlig austrocknen, weil sie die Dinger so schnell herstellen. Telekom informiert über "Upgrade Anytime": Offiziell ab Juli möglich
Normalerweise schließt man den iPhone-Vertrag bei der Telekom über zwei Jahre ab. Nach diesen zwei Jahren kann dann das nächste iPhone zum subventionierten Preis erworben werden. Hat man es allerdings besonders eilig oder will auf jeden Fall immer die aktuelle Modellgeneration haben, so bietet die Telekom eine "Upgrade Anytime"-Option an. Ultra High Speed spec for SD guarantees HD video
The SD Association today defined a new specification for very fast SDHC and SDXC cards. Ultra High Speed I (UHS-I) will guarantee a maximum interface speed of 104MB per second, or four times the 25MB speed of regular cards. As long as they're used with cameras, readers or other devices that can recognize the speeds, UHS cards should have no trouble recording HD video or shooting continuous RAW photos.

3 UK publishes iPhone 4 plans
Carrier 3 UK has finally published its pricing for the iPhone 4, which it has yet to launch. Plans start at a minimum of £30 per month, which brings 500 standard voice minutes. Five tiers exist, running up to £45 a month; beginning at one of two £35 options, as many as 2,000 voice minutes can be had. Nokia confirms switch to MeeGo for high-end phones
Nokia on Thursday confirmed that it will drop Symbian from its Nseries phones. A spokesperson said that all of the high-end devices after the N8 will use MeeGo, the OS co-designed with Intel. It's not known if the work-oriented Eseries or other models would use MeeGo, but most are still expected to use Symbian^3 or S40.

Ein kleiner Film mit iPhone 4 und der iMovie-App
Am heutigen Tag erschien das iPhone 4 offiziell für alle, die schnell genug vorbestellt hatten. Nach dem Chaos in der Telekom-Filiale und einer geschenkten Packung After Eight (die bekam der erste Kunde) machten wir uns auf den Weg die neue iMovie-App mal zu testen. Am Düsseldorfer Rheinufer schossen wir das 20 Sekunden lange Video vom Fluss, der Wiese und dem Fernsehturm. Das Video ist trotz der enormen Kürze satte 26 Megabyte groß und kann nicht via EDGE hochgeladen werden, sondern musste mit WLAN publiziert werden. Unser Zwischenfazit: Die Kamera des neuen iPhones ist wirklich genial und die iMovie-App könnte einfacher nicht sein. Jedoch bleibt ohne Stativ ein

Two main issues appear to be affecting new owners of the iPhone 4. The most critical of these, hinted at in early reviews, involves poor or completely absent reception when holding the device. Eine der merkwürdigsten Besonderheiten mancher iPhone 4 Modelle ist die eigenwillige Tatsache, dass sie nicht gerne telefonieren wenn man sie in der linken Hand hält. Genau das also, was man gewöhnlich macht, wenn man Rechtshänder ist. Fasst man es an der Stelle, an der die Antennen von Bluetooth, WiFi und GPS auf die UMTS Antenne treffen, an, sinkt das Empfangssignal langsam aber sicher gen Null. iPhone 4's yellow spot issue goes away with a bit of time?
We're starting to hear a few reports of the dreaded yellow spots disappearing from the iPhone 4's display after a day or so of use. Interestingly, someone posting on the AppleInsider forums seems to know why:
Apple is using a bonding agent called Organofunctional Silane Z-6011 to bond the layers of glass. Apparently, Apple (or more likely Foxconn) is shipping these products so quickly that the evaporation process is not complete. Apple vs. HTC: Weitere Patente in Klageschrift festgehalten
Apple hat seine Klage gegen HTC um zwei weitere Patentverletzungen erweitert. Im März hatte Apple die Klage wegen Ideendiebstahls eingereicht.

Erfahrungsbericht iPhone 4: Die Qual eines Telekom-Bestandskunden
Wie ich vor einigen Tage euch schon mitgeteilt habe, war ich am 15.06. im Telekom-Shop „meines Vertrauens“. Nachdem ich dort meinen Wunsch nach einem neuen iPhone 4 (32GB, schwarz) kundgetan habe, wurde ich nett in einer Liste aufgenommen. Ich wäre die Nr. 20 wurde mir gesagt.
Ich sollte eine Nachricht bekommen, wenn das Gerät im Laden eingetroffen ist. Nun war ich heute „zufällig“ in der Nähe von diesem Telekom-Shop. Also schauen wir mal rein und fragen nach dem aktuellen Stand der Dinge.
Mir wurde dann dort gesagt, dass nur wenige Geräte eingetroffen sind und diese sind schon verteilt (verkauft) worden sind. Auf meine Aussage, dass ich ja die Nr. 20 wäre und schon am ersten Tag der möglichen

Wer der neuen Version des beliebten OS entgegenfiebert, sollte unbedingt auf den Quelle-Link klicken und sich umfassend informieren. Und vielleicht auch anschnallen, denn Murtazins Urteil ist zweigeteilt. Letztendlich fühlt sich die neue Version von Symbian an wie ein Update der S60-Edition, hat keine wirklich bahnbrechenden neuen Features, keine Alleinstellungsmerkmale im direkten Vergleich mit der Konkurrenz und muss sich in Sachen Browser sogar ganz weit hinten anstellen.

I'm in line right now at the Santa Monica Apple Store for the iPhone 4 launch, and, just like in the rest of the country, the line is just plain huge. I was here for the iPad launch, and it's probably three times the size that line took up when it was at its longest. Of course, there are tents and camping chairs in the middle of this line, and that one was mostly people just standing around, but there's no question this is a much bigger line.
Apple Store employees haven't shown up outside yet (the store opens in about an hour from now), but the mood is genial -- even about 500 people back in line, where I am to try and get my Retina Display-enab

Liquavista displays go out in the sun, look better than all right (video)
We've seen Liquavista displays plenty of times at various trade shows, but so far they've always been locked up indoors. Now they've gone outside to enjoy the weather, and ARMdevices.net was there to capture the results. The low-power color and monochrome screens are shown looking at least as good in the wild as they do in captivity, and when placed next to a traditional LCD (in the laptop on the right) the difference is clear. Wie beim iMac? iPhone 4 hat Display-Probleme !
Seit heute kann man in Deutschland das heißbegehrte iPhone 4 käuflich erwerben. Manche werden sauer oder enttäuscht sein, wenn sie nicht zu den ersten Besitzern zählen. Aber manchmal ist es sogar besser, nicht in der ersten Reihe zu stehen.
Derzeit gibt es vermehrte Angaben, dass das Display vom neuen iPhone 4 durchaus fehlerhaft ist. Es wurden gelbliche Verfärbungen festgestellt, die irgendwie an die Probleme mit der letzten iMac-Reihe erinnern. Gerade im Apple-Support-Forum gibt es derzeit eine immer länger werdende Liste mit solche Problemen. Samsung will auf Dei und Verderb mehr abhaben vom Smartphone-Kuchen. Konkret strebt man in Korea mehr als 10% des weltweiten Marktes an. Das wäre eine Verdreifachung des aktuellen Anteils und schon Ende des Jahres soll es soweit sein, glaubt man Lee Donjoo, dem Vize von Samsungs Mobile Communications Division. Viel Glück dabei, aktuell sehen wir keine Killer-Handys, die diesen Sprung in der Hitparade ankurbeln könnte, Galaxy S hin oder her. Google-Fotografen in Geschäften gesichtet
Google hat in New York ein Pilotprojekt gestartet, dass das Street-View- und Places-Angebot massiv ausweiten soll: In mehreren Geschäften wurden Google-Fotografen gesichtet, die in der Tat Panoramen der Stores erstellten. Das im April gestartete Projekt geht über die reine Optik hinaus und möchte gar Dekoration, Angebote und Architektur der Geschäfte nutzen, um den Suchenden bessere Ergebnisse für ihre Anfragen anzubieten. Bislang scheinen sich die Fotografen nur in NYC zu tummeln, sollte sich das Projekt für Google jedoch als erfolgreich herausstellen, dürften wir in Deutschland eine ganz neue Dimension der Datenschutzdiskussion erleben.

iPhone 4 launches to long queues
As promised, Apple today launched the iPhone 4 at retail. The smartphone has faced especially large cues that have been both long and sustained; the 5th Avenue Apple Store line at opening was described as being much longer than for the iPad and iPhone 3GS. In the UK, where the phones have been available for several hours, there are still queues for at least some stores, such as London's Regent Street flagship and the Oxford Street O2 store.

Die SD Association hat die UHS-I-Spezifikationen vorgestellt, die einen Datentransfer von bis zu 104 MB pro Sekunde auf den kleinen Karten einleutet. Damit sind Video-Aufnahmen in HD in Echtzeit ein Kinderspiel. Die SD-Kiste ist ja ein amtliches Tohuwabohu, deshalb bekommen die neuen schnellen Karten einen neuen Namen. BGH entscheidet am 30. September über Handel mit gebrauchter Software
Wie Usedsoft heute mitgeteilt hat, wird der Bundesgerichtshof am 30. September über die Rechtmäßigkeit des Handels mit gebrauchter Software entscheiden. Dass er dies prinzipiell tun wird, steht bereits seit einem Beschluss vom 12. November 2009 (Aktenzeichen I ZR 129/08) fest. Ausgelöst wurde dieser Beschluss durch einen Revisionsantrag zu einem Verfahren zwischen Oracle und Usedsoft vor dem Oberlandesgericht München.

The line in Knoxville, TN is freaking huge

I came up to our local mall this morning and found that they had just begun to let people inside at 6:30am. The line for the iPhone 4 was huge, and apparently that was just for the non-preorders. The pre-order line snakes from the Apple Store to nearly the front door, and I'd say there are well over 200, possibly as many as 400 or 500 people if you add up both lines. Several hundred of those are simply hoping to get a phone without a reservation! Good luck, those of us with reservations are sweating the situation.

Das "Tokyo Institute Of Technology" arbeitet mit NEC und HP an einem neuen Supercomputer. Tsubame 2.0 soll mit 2,39 Petaflops gigantisch schnell werden und auch SSD-Speicher verwenden. Aber auch sonst ist Kumpel 2.0 seinem Vorgänger haushoch überlegen. 30 Mal schneller ist er, das Ganze bei einem Stromverbrauch, der gerade mal beim 1/25 des alten liegt. Im Herbst könnte schon alles fertig sein für anvisierte 28 Millionen Euro.

Micro-SIM: iPhone 4 kompatibel mit beschnitter Standard-SIM
In den britischen Store-FAQs zum iPhone 4 lässt sich derzeit eine Anmerkung zur Micro-SIM finden: Angeblich soll die iPad-Micro-SIM nicht mit dem iPhone funktionieren.

Lenovo lässt nicht locker in Sachen Netbook. Die Kollegen von Notebook Italia haben diesen Prototypen gesichtet, anlässlich des Freescale Technology Forums war er zu sehen. Das Netbook läuft - natürlich - mit einem Freescale-Prozessor, und zwar dem i.MX515 SoC, mit einem 800MHz-ARM-Cortex-A8. Die Batterielaufzeit soll der eines aktuellen Smartphones entsprechen und das Power Management ist so clever programmiert, dass Lüfter völlig überflüssig sind. Wir sind durchaus interessiert.

Atebits veröffentlicht eine neue Version des Twitter-Clients Tweetie für den Mac. Mit Version 1.2.7 entfällt die Registrierung, den entsprechenden Button haben die Entwickler enfernt. Ebenfalls neu ist eine Einstellungsoption, die auf Wunsch den iChat-Status nach jedem neuen Tweet aktualisiert.

Das iPhone 4 ist inzwischen bei den ersten Bestellern angekommen und schon finden einige Nutzer erste Fehler. Schon die alten iPhones hatten teils Probleme mit fleckigen Displays, die eine leichte Verfärbung in einigen Bereichen aufwiesen. Wie DailyTech und Mac Rumors berichtet, klagen einige Besitzer des iPhone 4 über einen Gelbstich im Display. Anscheinend gibt es hier wie schon beim iMac 27 Zoll Probleme bei der Display-Fertigung. Viacom hat ein langwieriges Urheberrechtsverfahren gegen Youtube verloren. Weißes iPhone 4 verzögert sich bis zweite Juli-Hälfte
Wer mit einem weißen iPhone 4 liebäugelt, muss sich noch etwas gedulden. Apple verrät in einer Pressemitteilung, dass sich die Produktion des weißen iPhones schwieriger gestalte als die des schwarzen Modells. Deshalb könne das Unternehmen das weiße iPhone erst in der zweiten Juli-Hälfe ausliefern. Das schwarze iPhone sei von den Problemen nicht betroffen.

Video: iPhone 4 und der erste Besitzer kommt aus Bremen
In der vergangenen Nacht hatte der Berliner Telekom-Shop 4010 schon seine Pforten um 0:01 geöffnet. Nachdem diese Möglichkeit bekannt wurde, war die Schlange vor dem Laden immerhin weit über 100 Meter lang. Der erste Besitzer eines iPhone 4 vom ersten offiziellen Verkaufstag dürfte Kubi aus Bremen sein. Er wartete seit ca. 17:00 vor dem dem Telekom-Shop auf das neue iPhone 4. Das iPhone 4 wollte er wegen den „edlen“ Materialien sich zulegen. Er hatte noch das iPhone der ersten Generation und die Nachfolger im Plastikgehäuse haben ihn nicht angesprochen. Deswegen hat er so lange gewartet.

We got up pretty close to the iPhone 4's retina display in our review, but we can't say we got quite as close as PhD candidates Ryan White and Bryan Gauntt of Penn State University, who have kindly provided us with some images of the screen under a microscope (along with an iPhone 3G for comparison). Nexus One getting Android 2.2 FRF83 update over the air?
The Android 2.2 source code just went public this morning, but we're hearing a fully-compiled, legitimate OTA version of Froyo may be hitting small batches of Nexus One handsets as well. Though a 1.78MB ZIP file floating around XDA-developers this afternoon was originally thought to be the droid we've all been looking for, Android and Me reports that they received an honest-to-goodness OTA version of FRF83 after trying (and failing) to get that ZIP to work, and we're getting several similar reports. Samsung Behold II finally gets Android 1.6 update
Yes, yes, we know you'd rather get Eclair or Froyo -- but sometimes you've got to be happy with what you've got, and this is one of those times. As far as we can tell, Samsung hasn't budged on its commitment to sunset the Behold II's upgrade path with Donut, but at least 1.6 is finally trickling into the hands of owners this week via a rolling over-the-air update that should wrap up on the 25th. HP buys Melodeo, brings Nutsie music streaming service into the fold
Well, it looks like HP's year of acquisitions isn't showing any signs of letting up just yet -- it's now reportedly bought Melodeo, the parent company of the Nutsie music streaming service, for between $30 and $35 million. While the service doesn't exactly have the name recognition of the now Apple-owned Lala, Nutsie's mobile applications (for iPhone, Android and Blackberry) have reportedly been downloaded more than two million times, and the company already has partnerships with a range of carriers and cellphone companies including Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint. Some iPhone 4s already showing discolored displays?
As customers begin to receive their iPhone 4 shipments, some users have already reported problems with the LCDs. Several threads on Apple's support forums suggest certain devices show yellow discoloration on different areas of the new "retina" display, typically near the lower right corner.

HP buying Melodeo to get iTunes-to-webOS music streaming?
HP may be buying its way into music streaming for Palm's webOS devices with the acqusition of Melodeo, a scoop today claimed. The PC veteran has reportedly already completed a deal worth as much as $35 million and would primarily get nuTsie, a mobile media streaming app. It lets Android, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile users stream their iTunes playlists over the Internet as well as access streams from fellow users and from recommendations; the iPhone is also supported but only has recommended playlists as it already has local iTunes access.

Droid X vs. iPhone 4... hang out!
So, these aren't exactly the most similar phones ever. The Droid X has Android, a high res 4.3-inch screen, Verizon, and a hump in back. The iPhone 4 has iOS, a higher res 3.5-inch screen, and some of the slimmest smartphone dimensions ever. Sure, they're both flagship handsets for their respective teams, but we'd really rather live in a world where Droid X and iPhone 4 hang out after work for drinks than one where they stab each other in their silicon hearts. Evernote launches in Japan, updated for iOS 4.0
Filed under: iPhone, App StoreMac & iPhone-friendly memory service Evernote has announced this morning that it's launching in Japan -- a new subsidiary called Evernote Japan will be headquartered in Tokyo. While a Japanese version of Evernote launched a while ago, it's become the company's second largest market, taking up fifteen percent of the daily traffic on the service.
What this means for non-Japanese users is that the main app will now also support Japanese character recognition -- while handwritten characters still probably won't work with the service, we're told, printed Japanese characters can be read by the app from photographs and scans.
