iPhone 3G and firmware 2.0: the day after
Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds
So many of you are probably still in your jammies, reveling in the afterglow of yesterday's purchase, repeatedly opening Maps on your glossy new iPhone 3G and watching in exaggerated wonderment as your location is determined with frightening speed and accuracy. Others might be standing in a line snaking hundreds of bodies long into your friendly local Apple Store, reading this post from the comfort of your Motorola RAZR V3 and realizing that these are some of the last moments you'll be using a physical keypad. Still others are bemused by the fuss -- but whatever your stance on the phone, it's pretty hard to ignore the buzz that's floating around in the aftermath of day zero. Here a

Well, that was quick. We mentioned Ion's fancy drum kit yesterday, which will be released around when Rock Band 2 ships, but works with both Rock Band games, and now we've got a price and a press shot of the Drum Rocker. The $300 set has high-durability pads, which are supposed to play quiet and will register the velocity of your hits, but the real win is the re-configurability of the whole set -- much like a for-realises electronic drum kit. iPhone 3G: The Waiting Game: Part II: Redux
Filed under: Cellphones
If you hadn't heard, hundreds of people were turned away from Apple Stores last night, iPhone 3G-less. However, being gluttons for punishment -- and having nothing to do over the weekend -- they've returned in droves to Apple Stores, with reports of lines longer than 200 people stretching out from The Cube, Apple Store Chicago (pictured) and even a store in Durham, NC. Apple offered up vouchers last night, at least at some stores, to anyone still waiting in line, so those folks can show up whenever and jump the line for a phone -- about 30 of them are lined up at The Cube currently. Cat Faucet solves elusive cat drinking from sink issue, we sigh in relief

The 3G iPhones from Belgium work in France
Just because Orange decided to push back the release of the 3G iPhone in France are we going to leave you without information on this device. We decided to find one of them elsewhere. New Zealand is a little far, however Belgium is very close. Moreover, the law oblige them to sell the iPhone without subscription and desimlocked. Thus equipped with a 16 GB white iPhone, we installed a SFR chip, and launched the activation through iTunes. And
.
voilà.
All passed without problem and the iPhone functions marvellously. We will return later during the day to comment on the iPhone itself to give us some time to test it.
PS: Firmware 2.0 makes it possible to make a screen capture by simultaneously pressing the top button and the central button. They are then stored in the photo album of the telephone.

iPhone lines cut off on East Coast and Midwest, west side still rockin'
This'll come as no surprise to those of you that've been following our worldwide line / stock watch, but with lines hitting six hours long, Apple's started capping them so that stores can close and prepare for tomorrow. Reports of line capping are coming mostly from larger stores in the East Coast and Midwest, but the Glendale Apple store in California is reportedly capped as well. Interestingly, while carrier stores worldwide have all sold out, we've heard that most Apple stores have had more than enough inventory -- one tipster reported that delivery trucks were being used to store overflow, since the main stock rooms were full at h

How would you change Popcorn Hour's A-100 HD media streamer?
When Popcorn Hour's Networked Media Tank / A-100 went on sale earlier this year, we didn't really foresee it gaining so much fanfare. Even months after launch the unit still had a waiting list, and just recently has the commotion died down enough so that supply and demand could meet in beautiful harmony. In all honesty, we haven't heard many negative feelings towards this potent little media server, but as these things

Former HP exec pleads guilty to stealing IBM trade secrets
Filed under: Misc. GadgetsWell, that didn't take long. Atul Malhotra, the HP executive charged with stealing printer market data when he left IBM and sending it to his new colleagues at HP with the genius-level subject line "For Your Eyes Only," has pled guilty to one count of theft of trade secrets. Malhotra probably made the right choice -- he specifically requested the information just before he left IBM and HP itself investigated and turned him in when he was found sending it around, so the case against him was pretty airtight. It's not clear what his plea

'Official' iPhone firmware 2.0 now available for download, seriously, for real

So yesterday we posted a link to a version of the 2.0 iPhone firmware which was supposedly the release version of the new system software. After getting weirded out by some buggy behavior, then discovering that there were number differences between our version and the version shipping with new iPhone 3Gs, we got a little suspicious. Today, we noticed that the file which Apple

Rock Band 2 special edition Ion drum kit and real Fender Stratocaster guitar controllers coming
Filed under: Gaming
Playing Rock Band sometimes feels like the real thing, but what if it looked like the real thing? Ion, who make real drum kits, have announced that they will release a premium Rock Band 2 drum kit that will not only have realistic pads and cymbals (which you can custom-assign), but it will also be possible to plug the thing into a drum brain to turn the kit into a real electronic drum kit. Is your Samsung Instinct acting up?
At first, we figured our Instinct here at Engadget HQ had just woken up on the wrong side of the bed, but we're now receiving a flood of tips from individuals nationwide having the same issues. Put simply, it seems that certain data services are thoroughly borked, with our Weather app being unable to refresh for at least the past 18 hours (some are reporting even longer). Additionally, we're hearing that folks are having to manually refresh their email and deal with all sorts of error messages when attempting to use any of the data services. So, what gives? Are you having data-related issues with your Instinct? C'mon Sprint, this is your

Apple Activations servers are back, fanboys go back to being fanboys
Today was supposed to be a exciting day for Apple and iPhone users but things went south when Apple's activation servers went out and people effectively got bricked iPhones. After waiting hours/days in line on a blistering hot summer day, many first day iPhone customers found that their activations couldn't take place. They were given the iPhones and told to go home and activate. Unfortunately, when they got home, they still had problems. Still, 3G iPhone customers got off easy.
Even more infuriation was felt by those EDGE iPhone 2.0 updaters who essentially killed their phones for the better half of the day when prompted to update by iTunes to iPhone 2.0. The software update happens but Apple needs to re-activate your iPhone. Instead of activations, iT
