TomTom already has iPhone navigation software ready to roll

That sound you hear is the not-yet-released nüvifone trembling in fear, as TomTom has just announced that an iPhone-ready version of its famed navigation software is practically ready to rock 'n roll. WWDC08: TomTom-Navigationssoftware für iPhone 3G
GPS auf dem iPhone - eine Funktion, auf welche die Apple-Gefolgschaft schon begierig gewartet hatte. Was liegt also näher, als das Apple-Mobiltelefon nicht nur zum Telefonieren, Surfen, E-Mailen und Musikhören zu verwenden, sondern auch als Navigationssystem? Design student concocts eco-friendly modular PC

This modular PC was designed with Mother Earth in mind, and from our view, design graduate Ben Chase should be receiving a copious amount of hugs from trees all around. Apple nennt erste Details zu Snow Leopard
In der Eröffnungskeynote zur WWDC 2008 war Snow Leopard kein Thema, kurz danach veröffentlichte Apple aber erste Informationen zur nächsten OS-X-Version (in einer Pressemitteilung, die unterdessen wieder verschwunden ist). Am 11. Juli: Das iPhone in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz
Man kann nicht alles haben: Die Hoffnung, dass das iPhone 3G unmittelbar nach seiner heutigen Vorstellung an den Start gehen würde, hat sich leider nicht bewahrheitet. Stattdessen müssen Fans und Interessierte in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz noch bis zum 11. Juli ausharren. Ein kleiner Trost: Wenigstens setzt Apple diesmal auf Gleichbehandlung, denn auch die US-Amerikaner müssen sich bis zu diesem Datum gedulden.

Sorry, we don't have pictures but Apple took us into a dramatically lit back-room to check out the new iPhone 3G. Here's what you need to know:
We did a quick data test -- at our location we went from 104Kbps on the EDGE iPhone to 215Kbps on the 3G model. 2x ain't bad, yo.
The enable/disable 3G setting is real, and buried a few menus deep. There is no automatic switching, Apple just assumes you'll leave 3G on, and that the iPhone has the juice to support that usage.
WiFi is still 802.11b/g, no support for n yet.
Yes, that GPS is A-GPS, just as we mentioned.
Geotagging photos is a thumbs-up. We were deep indoors though, so native GPS wasn't working and we couldn't ge

WWDC08: iTunes 7.7 kommt
Endlich wurde das neue iPhone 3G vorgestellt, das es ab 11. Juli in weit mehr als den bisherigen sechs Ländern geben wird. Mit den neuen Funktionen, die das iPhone beinhaltet, wird aber auch eine neue Firmware notwendig, die wiederum mit einer neuen iTunes-Version zusammenarbeiten soll. Das neue iPhone bei T-Mobile
In einer gemeinsamen Pressemitteilung haben Apple und T-Mobile ihre Zusammenarbeit bekräftigt. T-Mobile hat das iPhone 3G zum 11. Juli für Deutschland, Österreich und die Niederlande angekündigt, im Laufe der zweiten Jahreshälfte sollen dann noch Kroatien, Tschechien, Ungarn, Polen und die Slowakei vom rosaroten Riesen mit iPhones versorgt werden.
Ob und wenn ja wie sich die Tarife ändern, ist bislang noch nicht bekannt. Interessant ist vor allem, ob für die UMTS-Dienste höhere Gebühren anfallen als für die Verbindungen über EDGE. Bei T-Mobile kann man sich hier in einen iPhone-Sondernewsletter eintragen.

Apple bekommt keine "Revenue Sharing" mehr für monatliche Gebühren

.Mac heißt jetzt MobileMe - das ist neben dem neuen UMTS-iPhone die große Neuerung, die Steve Jobs heute Abend vorgestellt hat. Leider wissen wir bis jetzt nicht mehr darüber, denn Bertrand Serlet wird erst an Nachmittag (in Europa entsprechend in der Nacht) erste Details zur neuen OS-X-Version bekannt geben.

Am 11. Juli beginnt in 22 Ländern der Verkauf des neuen iPhone 2.0. Apple-Chef Steve Jobs hat zur Eröffnung der World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC 08)das Nachfolgemodell des vor einem Jahr vorgestellten Apple-Handys vorgestellt. Demnach soll das 8-GByte-Modell in keinem Land teurer als 199 Dollar sein. Im Vergleich zu dem vor einem Jahr eingeführten Modell ist das ein satter Preisnachlass von 200 Dollar. Apple will not recieve follow on revenue from its new iPhone partners
Apple will not receive follow-on revenue from most of its new partners according to SEC filing Form 8-K for APPLE IN. This is a very interesting development for several reasons. It means that Apple is stuck in their original agreements with AT&T, O2, Orange, Tmobile, etc. It also means that the old model wasn't optimal for Apple and it is going for the new model.
The new carriers will be doing the writeoff themselves for the new countries. How this will affect Apple's sales model is unclear. Will they sell them in the Apple store for $499 and AT&T will give you a $200 voucher? Will they still be Jailbreakable and downgradable?

Farewell .Mac: Apple launches Mobile Me
Apple has confirmed what we first said it would - the debut of the new Mobile Me service, which pushes essential information to iPhone users.
It's Exchange - for the rest of us, pushing email, contacts, and calendars over-the-air, ensuring everything remains in sync between the iPhone, Mac, or PC, syncing data both ways. It works with Mail, iCal, and Address Book on a Mac and Outlook on Windows.
iDisk is integrated as well, while Mail allows panes to be resized, multiple messages to be selected an more. iDisk lets users send files to people through the application, over-the-air. There's also features for iPhoto users, it's incredibly effective.

eBay, TypePad, others showcase iPhone apps at WWDC

Now that developers have had a fair crack at the iPhone SDK for a few months, plenty of companies were ready today to showcase their wares alongside Stevie. Among them:
eBay. Pretty much everything you'd need to do from a desktop browser can be done through eBay's iPhone app: bidding, searching for items, My eBay (so you can see how the sale of your old iPhone's going), watching items, and the like. It's free, but since you're giving eBay money every time you make a transaction, we'd expect it to be.
Loopt. Already a staple on a couple carriers, Loopt's location-based services allow friends to keep tabs on one another. It'll be free at the launch of the App Store.

AMD's netbook really a next-gen Raon Digital Everun

According to the unit's device manager, it's actually an Everun, although the only Everun we know of looks drastically different that the thing pictured above. US Supreme Court rules against LG, will limit patent royalties

UsedSoft erwirkt Verfügung gegen Microsoft
Wie der Gebrauchtsoftwarehändler UsedSoft jetzt mitgeteilt hat, hatte das Landgericht Hamburg bereits am 2. Juni eine einstweilige Verfügung gegen Microsoft erlassen (Az. 416 O 103/08). Developers, developers, developers - and they're all in San Francisco today for the opening of the WWDC, with that in mind news of the Mac Fusion gizmo is setting tongues wagging - though whether it's true, false of a happily optimistic Photoshop pipedream isn't completely clear (Our BS detecter needle broke off when we saw this).
See here, Mac Fusion looks so much like an Apple TV it may actually be one, and the use of a Windows logo within Apple's site seems a little, erm, unusual.
So what am I going on about? Mac Fusion - allegedly a product for budget-strapped developers searching for the hardware they need to port applications to the Mac. Though that' what we thought the Mac mini (if it lasts) could be used for. Telecom Italia promises post-WWDC iPhone news
Telecom Italia has confirmed it will announce the launch date for the iPhone in Italy following the Apple keynote at WWDC, by Tuesday morning "at the latest," Reuters Italia reports.

iPhone 2's competition (Blackberry Thunder) leaked, blown off..
BGR (not to be confused with PBR) got the latest Blackberry leak on their iPhone kil..competitor. Interesting timing.
It looks pretty similar to iPhone version 1 overall in form factor. It has lots of buttons (see right) but most importantly, it runs the Blackberry software that millions of businesses have doing their enterprise email. Us IT people aren't known to like switching platforms very often so no matter how good or bad it is, it will get adopted in a lot of businesses.

iPod Touch, iPhone Slingplayer finally shows its head
As we reported way back in January, Slingplayer IS coming to the iPod Touch, iPhone platform. It has been an extremely busy topic on their forums for the past 6 months. Sling has also been hiring iPhone Engineers since earlier in the year. But all of that doesn't an iPhone Slingplayer make.

Landmark Event, 2 diverging bridges, Snow Leopard?
Here's a late breaking hypothesis: the landmark event is not just about the iPhone SDK's GPS hooks, Core Location, and the incredible possibilities they represent. The Snow Leopard OS mystery is about Apple branching off into 2 diverging Major 'desktop' OSes. Leopard for large traditional computers, Snow Leopard for MacBook Air and smaller - like Tablets? Stuff that would run on the Intel Atom.
This makes sense across a lot of lines. Intel Atoms are extremely energy efficient, but they are also underpowered for a desktop OS. Apple could be releasing an Intel Atom optimized version of OSX today.

Microsoft fears the iReaper
Microsoft last night attempted to reassure its partners over the fate of Windows Mobile, trumpeting sales of 20 million supporting devices, while an analyst predicts 14 million iPhone sales this year.
RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky has conducted a global survey that finds 20 per cent of those surveyed plan to buy the 3G iPhone - 70 per cent of which are new to the device. The analyst expects the new iPhone will begin shipping in July and to sell 14 million units this year, 4-5 million in the first 90 days.

SMK's Wireless Input Pen lets you scribble like a 5 year old

So Long iPods?
Almost all analysts, as well as Mac-dedicated websites, agree that the new iPhone model could sign a new era for Apple, and Cupertino could sell dozen of millions units of the new device as it should bring the missing features identified in the first generation iPhone (such as GPS and 3G). In addition, the change in the iPhone business plan should massively extend the market of potential iPhone owners. Ob wir bereits heute Abend in den Genuss der neuen und sagenumwobenen 2.0-Software für das iPhone und den iPod touch kommen werden, ist noch ungewiss. TV-App für das iPhone
Im Rahmen der heute in San Francisco beginnenden Worldwide Developer Conference werden zahlreiche native Programme für das iPhone vorgestellt werden, unter anderem auch der sogenannte “SlingPlayer Mobile” zum Empfang von TV-Sendungen über das Internet. Das Unternehmen habe eine “Proof of Concept”-Version entwickelt, die sowohl mit dem iPod touch als auch dem iPhone funktioniere, so AppleInsider. Landmark Event, 2 diverging bridges, Snow Leopard?
Here's a late breaking hypothesis: the Landmark event is not just about the iPhone SDK's GPS hooks and the incredible possibilities they represent. The Snow Leopard OS mystery is about Apple branching off into 2 diverging Major 'desktop' OSes. Leopard for large traditional computers, Snow Leopard for MacBook Air and smaller - like Tablets? Stuff that would run on the Intel Atom.
This makes sense across a lot of lines. Intel Atoms are extremely energy efficient, but they are also underpowered for a desktop OS. Apple could be releasing a Atom optimied version of OSX today.

Intel to Launch Entry-Level SSD models
Source : Tom's Hardware.frWhile Intel recently announced its goal to enter the high-end SSD market, targeting mostly Pro users at first, it recently unveiled its low cost entry-level offer. Such SSD units will feature 4 to 8 GB of storage space in SATA format. The main difference with other similar products will be the specifications: 25 MB/s only in reading mode, while writing speed will top at 7 MB/s. The half life of such SSD is expected to be around 3 years with a MTBF of 1 millions hours.
So, who could be interested by such products? Most likely integrators aiming to bring low-cost/low performance computer to the market, indeed, the main advantageous of such solutions is the price: 4 GB for 25 USD and 8 GB for 50 USD. With such price and specification, those SSD resembles more a USB key drive than a true SSD.

CUDA and Tesla to Be the Big Parallel Programming Innovation at the WWDC?
Source : CNETAccording to NVidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, Apple could introduce its graphics parallel processing technology based on NVidia's CUDA technology. during the WWDC. CUDA is a programming system allowing software developers to take advantage of the unique parallel processing characteristics of NVidia's GPUs, such as the GeForce 8600M currently found in the MacBook Pro. Such announcement does not come at first, as NVidia released a beta version of CUDA for Mac OS X back in February; so any announcement at the WWDC could indicate that Apple has adopted the technology in its hardware to boost GPU performance. According to Jen-Hsun Huang, Apple's implementation of CUDA will not be entitled accordingly, but will have a different name; it will most likely be the new booster for Core image and Core video.

Wireless USB: Towards a Larger Adoption?
Source : DigitimesIt has been years that one talks about Wireless USB to allow connection to devices without any cable while offering massive data speed within a short range of couple of meters. If some peripheral prototypes have been demoed, the market remains inactive due to the lack of default support in computers. This could change in a near future as Realtek announced that it will provide Fujitsu with Wireless USB chips for some of its notebook models to be launched in 2008. If a large adoption is for sure not for tomorrow, one can easily imagine that a revised version of the MacBook Air will feature such system to boost its abilities to be connected to other peripherals. Totalausfall bei Amazon.com
Am Freitag war die US-Website von Amazon für rund zwei Stunden nicht erreichbar. Der Vorfall ereignete sich gegen 10.21 Uhr Ortszeit in Kalifornien. Acer settles with HP over patent litigation

In an extremely brief statement, Acer says to have "settled all ongoing patent litigation with HP." Sicherheitsupdate für VLC-Mediaplayer
Der quelltextoffene Mediaplayer VLC wurde aktualisiert. Das jedem Benutzer empfohlene Update auf die Version 0.8.6h behebt einige Stabilitäts- und Sicherheitsprobleme und gibt es wie gewohnt in getrennten Versionen für Intel und PowerPC, oder als große Universal Binary. Thecus unveils the massive N7700 eight-bay NAS

The last time we checked in with Thecus, they'd broken off a five-bay NAS called the N5200. Well, it appears the company upped the ante just a touch at this year's Computex with its new array -- an eight-bay monster known as the N7700. The massive storage appliance doesn't seem to deviate from the previous model much, utilizing a Celeron CPU to control the system, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, and a wide variety of RAID options (0, 1, 5, 6, 10 and JBOD). We don't have word on pricing or availability just yet, but hopefully the archiving of your of "films" and "music purchases" can wait.

Heute: iPhone OS 2.0 und ein paar Überraschungen
Zur besten Fußballzeit wird Apple-Boss Steve Jobs heute ab 19 Uhr Details zum großen Softwareupdate 2.0 für das iPhone und den iPod touch bekanntgeben und im besten Fall gleich die sofortige Verfügbarkeit ankündigen. Eine Tatsache, die angesichts der brodelnden Gerüchteküche in letzter Zeit ungerechterweise fast in Vergessenheit geraten ist - bringt uns das Update doch eine Vielzahl neuer Optionen für die bereits verkauften Geräte - vom AOL-Chat-Client bis zu Spielen mit Touch Screen-Unterstützung.
Aber natürlich steht die von allen erwartete Ankündigung einer zweiten iPhone-Generation im Mittelpunkt der Veranstaltung im Moscone Kongresszentrum in San Francisco. Wir rechnen sicher mit einer UMTS-Variante, eingebautes GPS klingt eher unwahrscheinlich, aber letztendlich nutzen all die Spekulationen gar nichts sondern wir müssen uns einfach noch ein wenig gedulden.
Interessante Neuigkeiten könnte es zudem auch in Sachen Rechner (Notebook-Updates oder gar ein neuer Mac mini?) sowie in Bezug auf Apples On

PowerPC-Unterstützung doch in OS X 10.6?
Heute Abend gibt es wohl endlich Gewissheit, wenn im "One more thing" ein wilder Schnee-Leopard auf die ausverkaufte WWDC losgelassen wird. Auf das Gerücht, dass der Nachfolger früher kommt als erwartet, gibt es nun ein weiteres Gerücht: Gizmodo berichtet, dass PowerPC-Macs weiterhin unterstützt werden. Laut deren Quelle gibt es Hinweise auf Arbeiten an PowerPC-Treibern. MacRumors bezweifelt die Glaubwürdigkeit des (anonymen) Tippgebers, kommen doch die Hinweise auf einen Intel-exklusiven Snow Leopard von bekannten (aber auch anonymen) Insidern.

FileMaker-Unterstützung für Version 7 endet am 26. September
Weniger dramatisch als die Gerüchte um ein Ende der PowerPC-Unterstützung im nächsten OS X, aber Besitzer von FileMaker 7 sollten wissen, dass der Hersteller nur noch bis zum 26. Nokia E71 and N66 online demos leak out

After spying those "in the wild" shots of Nokia's E71 and N66, we knew something had to be up -- and that does appear to be the case. A forum member over at Mobile-Review has stumbled upon user demos for both of the forthcoming devices, featuring in-depth Flash walkthroughs on how to master all the basic features of either phone. Sling announces proof-of-concept SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone

We had a feeling it was coming any day now, but now we have confirmation that Sling won't be leaving iPhone and iPod touch users in the lurch when it comes to streaming TV to their devices. The bad news is the software they showed us was pre-alpha proof-of-concept, and their whole situation is hamstrung by the fact that Apple hasn't officially accepted them into the developer program yet. So what we've seen is basically an app developed out of bounds for jailbroken devices -- thus it goes without saying that Sling won't be releasing it until they can do so legitimately. But assuming all goes well, they do intend to get it out the door by sometime this fall or winter. No word yet on the Android release. Video of the app in

The not-3G iPhone unboxing gets faker still

C'mon guys -- you're going to have to do better than this. First you show us that beat looking gray phone with the "dot" front-facing camera. Now the dot has magically grown, and the gray face looks more and more like a Colorware job or a badly cut sticker. But you know what's really insulting? You show that colored plastic back, and then in the next picture, the original iPhone aluminum back is clearly visible. Honestly it's like you're not even trying.
