Unity takes a bow on Apple's third-party development stance
When Apple first passed out those development restrictions on using third-party platforms to create iOS apps, Unity was one of the third-party services that could have been frozen out (though Flash was obviously in everyone's minds). The team behind the popular game development environment assured everyone Unity was safe, but according to the rules as stated, the rest of us weren't so sure.

Fujitsu says new wireless, contact-less charging system could hit products by 2012
There may be an increasing number of wireless charging devices available these days, but actual contact-less charging systems have so far been confined to experiments and slightly disconcerting demonstrations. Mmmm... new flavors of DODOcase iPad case are available
Remember the DODOcase? It was perhaps the first iPad case that we reviewed, a beautiful handmade Moleskine-like case made with traditional bookbinding methods. The case single-handedly revived the art of bookbinding in San Francisco, and it's sparked a handful of competitors.
For most of the product's short life so far, the interior paper in the case has been red. Now the company will be providing a full spectrum of 11 colors (including red) to purchasers. Amazon Kindle demo unit arrives in Best Buy, should populate shelves soon
Last week, Amazon decided to expand the B&M presence of its famed e-reader by throwing Best Buy the same bone already thrown to Staples and Target, and it looks as if "this fall" is about to get going. Unreal Engine now able to make iOS apps
With Apple's recent decision to ease off on its third-party app creation tools restrictions, gamers are in for some very cool and interesting developments. At the Korea Games Conference, Epic Games announced that the Unreal Development Kit (UDK) will have the ability to generate iOS games and other applications.
The UDK is freely available and has the ability to churn out incredible looking environments, such as the Epic Citadel tech demo you might have downloaded or at least gazed upon in wonder.

If you ask us, the whole Adam tablet is a concept until Notion Ink delivers something other than promises, but things are looking up for the less jaded among you. Swiss labs build credit card-sized projector for cellphones, operating rooms, and more

Intel CE4200 ups its set-top game with 3D support and H.264 HD encoding
We're sitting here at Intel's IDF 2010 day two keynote, and the company just announced its evolution of the Atom CE series for set-top boxes. The aptly-titled the CE4200 (formerly codenamed "Groveland") is an evolution of the CE4100, based on 45nm Atom architecture and now capable of H.264 video encoding. Mac OS X beta was released ten years ago yesterday
Happy (belated) birthday today to Mac OS X -- yes, the OS itself actually released to the public on March 24, 2011 (which means its actual "birthday," in my mind, isn't until next March), but on September 13, 2000, points out Macworld, Steve gave us the very first peek at the foundation of modern Apple computing at the Apple Expo in Paris. That's ten years ago yesterday -- we never were all that good with remembering birthdays.
Macworld lists out the ten most significant contributions of the OS to the Mac experience, but things like the Time Machine and Spotlight are on there, and of course those weren't introduced until much later. The OS itself was a

Verizon to launch Samsung Galaxy Tab on Thursday?
We're not calling it confirmed until we get an official invite in the mail, but it certainly looks like Verizon will be launching the Samsung Galaxy Tab on Thursday -- check out this leaked screenshot from the employees-only VZWeb system. Details are light, but it looks like Froyo and Flash 10.1 will be preinstalled along with "a number of exclusive apps" -- we'd say Skype fits the bill quite nicely here, as does the thanks-for-telling-us-it-costs-$10-per-month NFL Mobile app with live game streaming and the RedZone channel. Unfortunately, it sounds like we'll have a bit of a wait for pricing and availability details, which will be released "over the coming weeks," and that's really all we want to know -- if this thing requires a two-year contract we're thisclose to calling it a dud out of the gate. Analyst: Apple's Bumper case program a win-win for customers and shareholders
Analyst Shaw Wu with Kaufman Bros. says that while Apple is likely taking a hit by giving away free cases and bumpers to iPhone 4 buyers (and the company is even extending the offer after the deadline to anyone who calls AppleCare), the program will likely be a win in the long run. Acer shows off Windows Media Center Embedded at IDF (video)
Among the various demos at IDF today, Acer showed off its Revo 2 sporting a special treat -- Windows Media Center Embedded. A quick perusal of the menus (video is embedded after the break) showed off the same live TV / internet streaming video integration we've come to expect from Media Center, although obviously running on a simpler dedicated box. Rene Ritchie at TiPb recently noticed that Apple's new Game Center seems to be capped at 500 friends, which another user was able to confirm.
After receiving 500 friend requests*, Rene noticed they stopped coming in. He figured that was the end until he saw a tweet from fellow Game Center user MuscleNerd:
"So much for my not-so-secret plan to break GameCenter! They're capping my friend count at 500 (as soon as I delete 1, I get 1 new request)."

We would've never figured on Verizon carrying over the "Curve 3G" name from this phone's GSM counterpart, considering all of its older Curve models have already had EV-DO -- but branding consistency trumps logic in this case, we suppose. Apple warns App Store name squatters
TechCrunch reports that Apple is cracking down on "app name squatters," developers who create an app and reserve a name on the App Store, but don't actually upload files to release and sell the app. Apparently this is an issue -- personally, I can't immediately think of any names that I'd need to have on the App Store (maybe it's something really generic, like iReader?), but there are supposedly a few developers who have a certain name in mind, but can't use it because a squatter has locked it up in iTunes Connect. In fact, our own Victor Agreda foresaw this problem a while back, and now it's popped up on Apple's radar.
There's good news, though. Apple will now send out a warning after 90 days

Fujitsu will ab 2012 drahtlose Ladegeräte anbieten
Fujitsu will beim drahtlosen Aufladen von Mobilgeräten einen technischen Durchbruch erzielt haben. Forschern des Unternehmens sei es gelungen, Strom mit Hilfe von Magnetresonanz zu übertragen, einem Verfahren das unter anderem von Intel und dem Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) erforscht wird. Klar, ihr habt es schon erwartet: Nokias CBD (Clear Black Display) Technologie tritt mit dem E7-Prototypen und seinem 4-Zoll Display mit 640 x 360 Pixeln in einem subjektiven Kurztest gegen das Retina Display vom 3,5 Zoll Display mit 960 x 640 Pixeln vom iPhone 4 an. Mac OS X wird zehn Jahre alt
Vor zehn Jahren gab Apple die erste öffentliche Version des damals komplett neuen Betriebssystems Mac OS X frei. Zwar sollte die Finalversion von OS X erst im März 2001 erscheinen, doch bereits die Public Beta liess sich für 30 Dollar im Apple Store erwerben. Mac OS X löste das klassische Mac-Betriebssystem ab und bestach durch Neuerungen wie Multitasking, Speicherschutz, UNIX-Unterbau sowie die Aqua-Oberfläche. Von der Public Beta an sollte es allerdings noch mehrere Jahre dauern, bis Mac OS X reif für den Alltagsbetrieb war. Viele wichtige Mac-Applikationen erschienen erst im Jahr 2002 für das neue Apple-Betriebssystem. iPad kommt nach China
Monate nach der Einführung des iPads in den USA und später in Europa, kommt Apples Tablet-PC nun auch auf den riesigen chinesischen Markt. Bislang war es in China nur über große Umwege bzw. über den Schwarzmarkt möglich an das iPad zukommen. Dabei wurden teils deutlich höhere Preise für das iPad gezahlt als auf anderen Märkten.

Apple: 23% mehr Mac-Verkäufe im laufenden Quartal!
Laut dem Analysten Gene Munster von Piper-Jaffray sieht es in diesem Quartal durchaus gut aus für Apple, wenn man sich allein die Mac-Verkäufe genauer anschaut. Nokia CBD vs. Apple Retina... display fight!
Come on, you knew this post was coming. Here we have a prototype Nokia E7 and its new 4-inch, 640x360 pixel Clear Black Display pitted again the iPhone 4's 3.5-inch 960x640 pixel Retina display. To our eyes, the iPhone 4 display has a noticeable blue warmth and wasn't as vibrant or bright as the CBD. The CBD, however, did come across a bit oversatured (just look at those red "breaking news" bars), but hey, it's AMOLED. It certainly looks just as good as the Galaxy S' Super AMOLED. We'll have to see how the polarized layer on the CBD affects sunlight viewing. More on that later. Until then, play nice dear readers.

Intel nennt Details zu nächster Core-i-Prozessorgeneration
Im Rahmen des Intel Developer Forums hat der amerikanische Halbleiterhersteller weitere Details zu der nächsten Generation seiner Core-i-Prozessoren bekannt gegeben. Diese trägt den Codenamen Sandy Bridge und soll 2011 erscheinen. Sandy-Bridge-Chips sollen im 32-Nanometer-Verfahren gefertigt werden und über eine deutlich leistungsfähigere integrierte Grafikeinheit verfügen. Anders als bei den aktuellen Core-i-Chips (Arrandale) werden sich bei den Sandy-Bridge-Prozessoren der Grafikchip und die CPU auf ein und demselben Chip befinden. Intel verspricht eine 3D-Grafikleistung, welche mit aktuellen Einsteigergrafikkarten mithalten kann. Darüber hinaus sollen die neuen Prozessoren weitere Performancegewinne ermöglichen, unter anderem durch einen verbesserten Turbo-Boost, eine neue 256-Bit-Befehlssatzerweiterung mit der Bezeichnung AVX und einer neuen Hardware-Beschleunigungseinheit für Video-Transcoding.

Erstes Hands-On: Nokia C6-01

Wie schon beim C7 zeigt sich auch beim ersten Hands-On des C6-01 ein etwas träges Verhalten des Touchscreens, allerdings deutet auch die mit "C0" ziemlich prototypenmässige Bezeichnung des Gehäuses schwer darauf hin, dass es sicjh noch nicht um ein Seriengerät handelt. Ansonsten ist das recht schnuckelige C6-01 wegen seinem im Vergleich zum C7 kleineren Display zwar ein wenig umständlicher zu bedienen, dafür hat es aber die gleichen satten Schwarztöne. IDF: Displayanbindung mittels USB 3.0
Auf dem Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco hat DisplayLink neue USB-3.0-Chips vorgestellt. Diese sollen mehr Bandbreite anbieten um so in der Lage zu sein, über eine schlichte USB-3.0-Verbindung maximal zwei Displays in voller HD-Auflösung anzusteuern. Erstes Hands-On: Nokia C7

Ein erstes Hands-On mit der silbernen und der schwarzen Variante von Nokias neuem C7, sozusagen dem N8 für die Masse zeigt, dass es tatsächlich ziemlich schick ist. Das Ansprechen der Touchscreens lässt allerdings zu wünschen übrig, sowohl beim C6-01 als auch beim C7. Das kann natürlich auch daran ligen, dass es noch keine Serienmodelle sind, sondern Prototypen, bei denen ja nicht immer alles rund läuft. Die ganze Bilderpracht in der Galerie.

Nokia C6 und C7 mit Symbian^3 und 8 Megapixel Kamera

Neben dem E7 hat Nokia auch das C6 und das C7 vorgestellt, zwei Candybars, die Lust auf Symbian^3 machen sollen. Das Nokia C6-01 kommt mit 8-Megapixel Kamera und 3,2-Zoll AMOLED Display mit der neuen ClearBlack Display (CBD) Technologie, die vor allem draussen bessere Sichtbarkeit bieten soll, der grössere Bruder C7 mit 3,5-Zoll ein grösseres Display und ein Gehäuse aus Edelstahl, dass es laut Anssi Vanjoki "ohne Zweifel" zum schicksten Gerät überhaupt macht. Beide sollen im vierten Quartal zu preisen von 260 Euro (C6) bzw 335 Euro (C7) vor Steuer kommen, die komplette Pressmitteilung findet ihr nach dem Break.

Nokia C6-01 first hands-on
So the C7 might be the sexiest Symbian^3 device but the C6-01, well, it just may be the cutest. Just all depends on what you're looking for (and how much you're willing to spend), you know? Like the C7, we had a little difficulty getting screen swipes to register while trying to change home screens, but considering that the top of the bezel had the very prototypish "C0" mystery name badge, we're more than happy to cut it a little slack. IDF: RAID-SSD mit 4 SandForce-Controllern

Nokia E7: neuer Flaggschiff-QWERTY-Slider von Nokia

Nokia hat auf der Nokia World 2010 soeben sein neues Flaggschiff, den QWERTY-Slider E7 vorgestellt. Das E7 kommt in schmucker Aluhülle, hat einen 4-Zoll Touchscreen und eine 8-Megapixel Kamera. Laut Nokia das beste Business Handy ever, und PowerPoint-Präsentationen kann man auch damit machen. We've just played with both black and silver versions of Nokia's just-announced C7 -- a phone that you might call an N8 for the masses -- and we think it's probably going to come away with the "sexiest Symbian device" crown by the time it's on shelves. We're a little concerned with screen sensitivity; on both the C7 and C6-01, we had a little difficulty getting home screen swipes to actuate -- but you never know what the deal is with these well-handled protos, so we're going to hold off on passing judgment until we've got retail units in our hands. Apple hat sich in den Support-Dokumenten einem DNS-Problem in Safari 5.0.1 gewidmet. Dabei kann es durch das DNS-Prefetching dazu kommen, das Webseiten als nicht erreichbar angezeigt werden oder die Ladezeiten allgemein extrem lang werden. Als Lösung schlägt Apple die Prüfung des gewählten DNS-Server vor, oder man deaktiviert das Prefetching komplett:

Mac-Verkäufe wachsen weiterhin rasant
Im letzten Quartal (April bis Juni 2010) verkaufte Apple mit 3.47 Millionen Macs so viele Computer wie noch nie. Analysten zufolge wird Apple diesen Wert im aktuellen Quartal nochmals deutlich übertreffen und rund 3.8 Millionen Macs unter die Leute bringen. Dies entspräche einem Wachstum von 23 Prozent im Vergleich mit dem Vorjahresquartal. Mit starken Absätzen in der Vorweihnachtszeit könnte Apple im Kalenderjahr 2010 damit erstmals in seiner Geschichte über 15 Millionen Macs absetzen.

27 Zoll LED Cinema Display steht kurz vor der Auslieferung
Ende Juli hatte Apple ein neues 27-Zoll Cinema Display zusammen mit neuen Desktop-Rechnern angekündigt. Als Erscheinungstermin gab Apple den September an. Nun scheint die Auslieferung kurz bevorzustehen. Im amerikanischen Apple Store wurde das Display offenbar zwischenzeitlich als Konfigurationsoption beim Kauf eines neuen Macs angezeigt, unterdessen hat Apple den entsprechenden Hinweis aber wieder entfernt.
Das neue LED Cinema Display besitzt eine Auflösung von 2560 x 1440 Pixel und einen Mini DisplayPort. Eingebaut sind ein MagSafe-Ladegerät, eine iSight-Kamera, Lautsprecher und drei USB-Schnittstellen. Das 27-Zoll-Display wird die bisherigen Cinema Displays ersetzen und kostet 999 US-Dollar.

Auf dem Intel Developer Forum wurden weitere Details zu den kommenden Core-i-Prozessoren, welche auf den Code-Namen "Sandy Bridge" hören, bekannt. IDF: Kein natives USB 3.0 für „Sandy Bridge“
Vor einigen Tagen kamen Gerüchte auf, dass Intel sich doch noch für die Integration von USB 3.0 auf den neuen Platinen entschließen würde. Dieser Punkt ist in dem Sinne richtig, da man den gleichen Weg geht wie auch bisher: Man verbaut Chips von NEC. Eine native Unterstützung gibt es nicht.

Canon SX30IS packs a 35x zoom with auto framing for the casual paparazzo
Canon point-and-shoots usually chug along on a pretty iterative update cycle, but the new SX30IS takes a pretty major leap -- it now packs a crazy 24-840mm 35x wide angle zoom, which Canon says is a first on a point and shoot. That monster lens is backed by a 14.1 megapixel sensor with a 720p movie mode and a DIGIC 4 processor, along with a new zoom framing assist system that lets you push in to nail your subject on the 2.7-inch LCD and then back out again. Not bad for $429 when it hits later this month -- we'll have to see how well that lens does at max range, but if it's any good at all this thing is destined to become very popular indeed.

IGPs ab 2013 zum Tode verurteilt

webOS 1.4.5 for Palm Pre Plus on Verizon and AT&T finally arrives
Palm first started telling us webOS 1.4.5 was coming "soon" back in May, but after an interminable wait it looks like Pre Pluses on Verizon and AT&T are starting to get an OTA update. The release notes page on Palm's site is currently down, but we're looking for better PDK support, some GPS fixes, and improved gaming action. HDCP 'master key' supposedly released, unlocks HDTV copy protection permanently
Just as the MPAA is preparing to offer movies to customers at home while they're still in theaters by limiting playback to DRM-protected digital outputs only, the HDCP protocol they rely on may have been cracked wide open. Microsoft's Principal Researcher recently sat down for a very long interview with The Globe and Mail. 40.1 million people are playing games on iDevices, 45% fine with in-app ads
Here are two interesting stats about iOS gaming to round out your Monday. First up, a new industry survey says that 40.1 million people in the US are playing games on Apple's mobile devices -- that's over half of the 77 million strong total gaming audience. That's a huge market share, especially considering this platform has only existed for a few years.
By comparison, Sony's PSP system only has an audience of around 18 million, and Nintendo's DS audience in the States sits at 41 million. Axion Logic hat vor kurzem “chronoSgear” für iPhone und iPod Touch veröffentlicht. Es handelt sich um einen Mix aus Match-3-Puzzlespiel und Rollenspiel-Elementen.
“chronoSgear” (Affiliate) von Axion Logic verbindet die dialog-orientierte Erzählart von Rollenspielen mit Manga-Optik mit dem Gameplay von Match-3-Puzzlespielen. Kämpfe werden dabei in Form von Puzzle-Einheiten absolviert.

Drobo wants Mac users to "Upgrade your RAID"
Did you buy one of those "quasi-RAID" storage devices over the last few years? You know, the ones that tried to squeeze a few hard disks into a shiny silver box and call it RAID? In many cases, those devices simply implemented RAID 0 (block-level striping without parity or mirroring) as a way to create a big drive out of two or more smaller drives. Disney aiming to establish technology standards for web-connected toys
Details are still pretty light on this one, but it looks like Disney is doing its part to add a bit of order to the wild technology frontier that is web-connected toys -- the company's consumer products division will reportedly detail a proposal to establish a set of technology standards at the Engage Conference and Expo later this month. That plan will be laid out by the head of Disney's "Toymorrow" team, Armen Mkrtchyan, who will apparently discuss what sort of standards Disney is currently looking at, and how such standards could lead to things like cost-savings and "increased playability." Newest Canadian Apple Store draws hundreds
Here's a local report from Newmarket, Ontario in Canada, where Apple opened up a brand new store at the Upper Canada Mall over the weekend. Apparently hundreds of people were in line for the opening on Saturday morning, trying to get the iPhone 4 as well as all of the new iPod devices. Everybody involved sounds pretty happy, from the people who got in line starting at 4:30am, to the manager of the new store and the landlord in the mall itself. Then again, maybe that's their Canadian friendliness coming through.

TiVo tries a "limited test" of free-on-contract DVRs
Our keen eyed friend Dave Zatz spotted an offer that popped up on TiVo's homepage over the weekend, offering customers the opportunity to obtain a TiVo Premiere DVR for zero dollars down, with the caveat that they would be locked into paying $19.99 a month for service for the next two years. That's a slight bump over the regular $12.95 per month (currently offered at $9.95) service fee, but nothing unreasonable if you do the math. New Kindle ad takes on the readability of iPad in the sun, doesn't have monster track
This morning as we were brewing our coffee, we saw what appeared to be a new Kindle ad that mocked the readability factor of an iPad-like slate in the sun. The video turned a little weird, however, when, at the end we were greeted with a maniacal monsterish cackle. Unsurprisingly, we thought, "this is fake" and moved on with our day.
