iLounge leaks details on next-gen iPods, iPhone, iPad

Google Wave flatlines: no plans to further develop standalone product, future is in other Google services
Wave goodbye (sorry, we couldn't resist) to Google's "community collaboration" tool. In a post on Google's official blog, Senior VP of Operations Urs Hölzle has announced there are "[no] plans to continue developing Wave as standalone product." Korea approves iPhone 4 for September, gets BlackBerry Storm
South Korea's Communications Commission approved the iPhone 4 after regulatory delays prevented it from launching it on July 30. The phone is now clear to sell but could take one to two months to reach the market as its exclusive carrier, KT, gets ready to sell the Apple device. BlackBerry Torch official, hits AT&T August 12
As expected, RIM at its still live event today launched the BlackBerry Torch. Also known as the 9800, it's the first BlackBerry to combine a touchscreen with a hardware QWERTY keyboard and still has an optical trackpad. Forrester gives thumbs up to iPhone, iPad enterprise use
iOS devices -- namely the iPhone and iPad -- should now be secure enough for enterprise use, says Forrester Research's Andrew Jaquith. The devices allegedly "satisfy the basic security needs of most enterprises," and moreover have overwhelming demand from executives and other workers. "Your rank-and-file employees want it, and your executives have likely already made many special requests to your IT team," the analyst comments.

Samsung intros 2TB EcoGreen hard drive
Samsung this week said it will soon begin shipping the 3.5-inch EcoGreen-series F4EG desktop hard drive that has the world's highest density. At 2TB, it uses three 667GB platters and is said to have 19 percent better standby time performance and 23 percent lower power consumption in standby than the four-platter, 2TB model it replaces, the F3EG. The new drive is also environmentally friendly, with no halogen compounds and brominated flame retardants from the materials used in its construction.

Murdoch claims 'tens of thousands' of app-based readers
News Corp. currently has "tens of thousands" of people reading The Times, The Australian and the Wall Street Journal via apps, according to CEO Rupert Murdoch. While declining to give exact subscription numbers at a debate in Sydney, he described the iPad and other tablets as a "perfect platform" for cheap and convenient News Corp. material. Razer refreshes Lachesis mouse with better performance
High-end PC gaming peripherals maker Razer has refreshed the performance of its Lachesis mouse. The only thing it shares with the original is its exterior look, as the new one packs a more precise 5,600DPI, 3.5G laser sensor and a multi-color LED lighting system. There are 16 million colors gamers can choose from, and each illuminated area on the mouse can be set to glow in a different color.

JailbreakMe based on major PDF exploit
The JailbreakMe hack for iOS devices is in fact based on a serious PDF exploit in Safari, claims security specialist Charlie Miller. The trigger for the exploit is currently believed to be a font bug which allows the site to gain deep access to the iOS firmware. "Scary how it totally defeats Appleís security architecture," Miller remarks.

Foxit kills e-reader, licenses out in wake of iPad, Kindle
Foxit today became the latest casualty of tougher e-reader competition as it said it would drop its eSlick hardware. The company will instead focus on licensing the software technology it uses to read PDF and ePub files. It justified the decision to exit hardware as needed to "eliminate the possibility of competing with our partners."

Lightsoft Weather Center 2.0 supports more weather stations
Lightsoft has launched an update to its weather monitoring and analysis software, Weather Center 2.0. The app lets users track weather patterns, saving figures such as wind speed and high and low temperatures in a database. It can then generate webpages with current conditions, graphs and statistics. It can further generate webcam images and time-lapse movies, or upload to the Wunderground Personal Weather Station and the Weather Observers Program. It also supports Davis Vantage, Vue, Envoy, Monitor and Wizard weather stations.

Microsoft hints at possible Magic Trackpad competitor
Microsoft's hardware group created a minor amount of intrigue today as it posted a second teaser for an unknown peripheral. The controller doesn't appear to be either a mouse or a keyboard and, from a small fragment, appears to be a possible challenger to Apple's Magic Trackpad. In one hint, however, Microsoft told users "don't be so touchy flat is where it's at," casting doubts on the trackpad theory as well.

UI Actions 2.0 adds Global Access capabilities, fixes bug
PFiddlesoft has upgraded its AppleScript attachment software with UI Actions 2.0. Users can attach AppleScript actions to native Mac OS X apps, triggering scripts whenever predetermined actions are taken in a host program. Any interface element in any app can be used to launch any action, a key distinction from the more limited Apple Folder Actions and Digital Hub Actions.

PC users get drivers for Magic Trackpad via Boot Camp hack
UNEASYsilence has hacked Apple's Boot Camp update, extracting a Magic Trackpad driver, allowing any Windows user to take advantage of the new controller. Released last week, the Magic Trackpad employs the same surface-as-a-button design as the trackpad on a MacBook, but with an 80 percent larger surface. Multi-touch gestures carry over, including rotations, scrolling and special three- and four-finger swipes.

Vodafone HTC Desire shows growing Android bloatware issue
Vodafone UK has sparked anger on its forums and elsewhere today as an Android update forced unwanted apps on HTC Desire owners. The upgrade improved the OS but also installed both the 360 service, redundant carrier-branded music store and web browser apps, and a shopping app. None of the apps are removable and also weren't mentioned as part of the update.

Motorola tablet may reach Verizon with TV, mobile hotspot
Motorola's rumored 10-inch Android tablet could have an unusual TV feature to lure buyers away from the iPad, anonymous sources said Tuesday evening. The slate would support watching TV and would have an unspecified link to Verizon's FiOS fiber optic IPTV. It's unknown if this would involve a FLO TV tuner, but with Qualcomm's planned exit an Internet streaming option is more likely.

Apple outs iOS 4.1 beta 3, pulls Game Center for old devices
Apple tonight posted its third beta of iOS 4.1 to the iOS developer center. The update comes just a week after beta 2 and, so far, is known to pull support for some older devices for Game Center. The social network component is "no longer supported" on the iPhone 3G or second-generation iPod touch, Apple said in its notes.

Barnes & Noble considers selling itself
Barnes & Noble today surprised the industry by revealing that it was contemplating "strategic alternatives" that could involve selling itself. In a statement, the company believed its shares were priced well below expectations and had recruited an independent committee to research its choices to boost the company's fortunes. Intel, FTC reach antitrust deal, promise details tomorrow
Intel and the Federal Trade Commission tonight said they had reached a settlement in their antitrust lawsuit. The two didn't explain the agreement but will provide full details on Wednesday morning. Public comments will be open for those who object to the deal, they said.

FTC secrecy confirms investigation of Apple SDK rules
The FTC has indirectly confirmed an investigation into Apple's iOS SDK rules as it has denied a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for the complaint. Officials exempted all of Adobe's 189-page document from the openness demand by Wired as its publication could "reasonably be expected to interfere" with ongoing cases. The agency didn't directly acknowledge the case or provide details.

Android at 33% of US smartphone sales, leapfrogs Apple, RIM
Android has overtaken not just the iPhone but the BlackBerry as the top-selling smartphone platform in the US, the NPD Group found on Wednesday. Exactly one third of all smartphones sold this spring were running Google's platform. Most of the losses came at RIM's expense, as it dropped to 28 percent. The iPhone 4 launch helped Apple gain share at 22 percent, but it wasn't enough to offset overall gains by Android.

iPad gets Israeli launch date, Chinese certification
The iPad will officially launch in Israel in a few weeks, according to the country's Apple importer, iDigital. So far the only way of getting an iPad into Israel has been to buy one abroad or as a gray-market import; Reuters reports that an Israeli electronics chain will start selling iPads later this week at a base cost of 3,800 shekels, or $1,000. Those tablets will lack warranties and complete Hebrew support, iDigital notes.

21% of iPhone 4 users get death grip, most happy with fix
As many as a fifth of all iPhone 4 owners have been hit by the iPhone 4's "death grip" issue in some form but could be happy with Apple's case fix, ChangeWave said in a study today. About 21 percent of owners responding either thought it was "somewhat of a problem" or a "very big" problem, but 73 percent of the group was either very or somewhat satisfied with getting a free case to address it. The majority, 64 percent, either didn't think it was an issue or hadn't noticed it in practice.

BBC considers adopting iPad; EU picks iPhone, HTC devices
Apple products are gaining special favor in Europe, reports say. In the UK, the BBC is currently said to be running limited internal trials of the iPad, in order to judge whether it might improve work efficiency while eliminating paper waste. Intel's FTC deal prevents price dumping, artificial slowdown
As promised, Intel and the Federal Trade Commission today detailed the settlement (PDF) made to avoid a full penalty for Intel in its antitrust case. Under the new terms, Intel is barred from offering incentives to carry its chips exclusively or from retaliating if a PC builder uses chips from AMD or another rival. The semiconductor pioneer would be prevented from deliberately price dumping or threatening a lack of marketing or discounts.

Samsung intros PL90 camera with built-in USB plug
Samsung tackled a longstanding problem with compact cameras today by adding a new entry-level model, the PL90. Borrowing a cue from Cisco's Flip cameras and Samsung's own pocket camcorders, the PL90 has its own swiveling USB plug. The software focuses on exporting and encoding video, especially for iPad, iPhone, Apple TV and YouTube, and it handles a wide range of formats, such as AVCHD, AVI, DV, WMV, MPEG, MP4 and VIDEO_TS. Samsung FX2490HD serves as hybrid TV, computer display
Samsung in its home market of South Korea showed off a new hybrid computer monitor that doubles as a TV set. The 24-inch FX2490HD has a built-in TV tuner, a picture-in-picture function and support for 7.1-channel Dolby Digital and DTS audio. There is no word on resolution, but its size would suggest 1080p.

iPad a major influence on recent Apple retail success
Much of Apple's June-quarter retail success can be linked back to the iPad, observes Needham analyst Charlie Wolf. Retail revenue grew 72.8 percent year-over-year, reaching $2.58 billion. While same-store Mac sales rose 21.8 percent, the iPad is believed to have helped non-Mac sales jump 106.3 percent. The device is the new "fourth leg of the stool" for Apple, actually replacing retail in importance behind the iPhone, Mac and iPod, says Wolf.

Bell to join Telus with 42Mbps HSPA+ 3G
Bell today announced it will begin field trials of its new 42Mbps network this month. This follows internal trials of its HSPA+ 3G service, which promises to deliver significantly faster download speeds for its Canadian customers. This development comes after news from Telus, which yesterday announced that would be the first carrier in North America to support the theoretical maximum 42Mbps speed of HSPA+ on its 3G network.

Nikon locks in August 19 press events, shoots D3100 ads
Nikon's plans to launch the D3100 next week have been virtually confirmed today as the company has slated several European press events for the anticipated August 19 unveil date. The event would follow two days after a Coolpix unveiling and should introduce a significant leap for Nikon's DSLRs as a whole and not just the entry-level. It should switch from CCD to a much improved CMOS sensor but could also add 1080p AVCHD video, continuous autofocus in movie and live view modes, and on-camera video editing.

Google drops Wave after lack of interest
Google today said it would drop Google Wave. The over year-old service had "not seen the user adoption [Google] would have liked" and won't be a developed further. The search firm plans to keep supporting Wave through at least the end of the year and, as it's open-source, says both the technology and the data will be made exportable to other services.

Report: iPhone 4 owners report fewer dropped calls than iPhone 3GS
With all of the Antennagate hoopla since the release of the iPhone 4, you'd think that owners of the new phone are never able to complete a call normally. According to a recently published survey from ChangeWave Research, iPhone 4 owners are reporting fewer dropped calls than iPhone 3GS owners.
5.2% of iPhone 4 owners reported dropped calls during the month of July, while 6.3% of owners of the iPhone 3GS said they had experienced dropped calls in a June survey. Dish Network to offer live TV streaming on its free mobile apps next month
Now that the SlingLoaded ViP922 DVR is actually available from Dish Network it's ready to offer more features from the Sling Mobile side of the menu, with plans to add free live TV (or recorded DVR program) streaming to its own mobile apps. Apple slyly enables background iDisk music streaming in iOS 4
Well, would you look at that? The v1.2 update to MobileMe iDisk that Apple pushed out last month has a secret -- er, did have a secret. NVIDIA 3D Vision Pro Technology uses RF syncing to woo professionals
NVIDIA has a strong lead in PC land with its IR-based GeForce 3D Vision tech, but apparently us lowly consumers aren't enough for the squiggly green eyeball. iPhone 4 camera won't open? Try these steps
There are numerous reports of the camera in iOS 4 failing to open. I've seen it quite a bit on my iPhone 4, but it comes and goes. While some folks are swapping out hardware, I'm not so sure this is a hardware issue. I still advise you to call Apple or visit a Genius Bar, but this appears to be a memory issue more than anything. I'm hoping iOS 4.1 will fix the problem.
What happens is that you go to use the camera on your phone, and the shutter won't open. You may see this in the Camera app, or in other apps like Facebook or Ya Gotta See This! which use the iPhone's camera. iPad moves closer to sale in China
On Monday, the iPad moved one small step closer to the Chinese market when it received the China Compulsory Certification from the China Quality Certification Center. Other certifications will be necessary, but this important first step has been taken.
The Chinese government will ultimately determine if and when the device is sold. Before that happens, it will be subject to other regulating bodies like China's Telecommunications Equipment and Certification Center.
Liu Liang with the consulting group iResearch suggests that the iPad would sell well in China, despite competition from other devices. "The iPad is a top tier device," he said, "and the Apple brand has a great deal of influence among consumers."

Intel and FTC settle charges of anticompetitive conduct
It's been quite a stretch since the Federal Trade Commission first investigated and then ultimately sued Intel for alleged anticompetitive conduct, but the saga has now come to a close -- the two parties today announced a settlement of the charges. Verizon chief tapped for CES 2011 keynote

AV-Test kritisiert mangelnde Stabilität bei Panda Internet Security 2011
Das auf Tests von Antivirenprogrammen spezialisierte Unternehmen AV-Test hat die geringe Stabilität von Panda Internet Security 2011 bemängelt. Im Test sei das Programm mehrmals abgestürzt. Unter Windows 7 habe das Programm weitergearbeitet, obwohl die Tester es deaktivierten. Capo 2 detects chords and tabs in your favorite songs

iriver Story Touch edition reader shows up on fan site
It's been a while since we've heard anything from iriver on the e-reader front, so this one isn't a huge surprise. It looks like the Story is getting a nice, compact Touch edition, and while we don't have full specs yet, we do have plenty of photos, and we also know it's going to boast a 6-inch, touchscreen display (which appears to be some type of e-ink), 2GB of internal storage, with SDHC expansion up to 32GB. US Navy working to make drones laser-proof
No, you're not looking at a still from a purported UFO video. That's an unmanned drone that the US Navy recently shot down with a prototype laser weapon. While that test was a runaway success, it looks like the Navy is now already going the extra mile -- it's begun work on making its drones laser-proof to guard against such weapons eventually winding up in the wrong hands. To shoot the basketball, you just touch the screen and drag until your guideline is lined up, and then you fire away and try to drop in as many shots as possible. While some companies try to get away with calling themselves Nokla or BlockBerry, these Chinese KIRFers have no qualms about copying HTC's EVO 4G in its entirety (externally, anyhow). Wikipedia soll FBI-Wappen aus Lexikonartikel entfernen
Das FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) hat einen Rechtsstreit mit Wikipedia vom Zaun gebrochen. In einem Brief (PDF), der von der New York Times ins Web gestellt wurde, verlangt die Behörde, dass ihr Wappen aus dem Wikipedia-Artikel über die Bundespolizei entfernt wird. Intel stellt Core i7-975 EE und weitere CPUs ein
Nachdem Intel mit dem Core i7-970 und Core i7-980X zwei Prozessoren mit sechs Kernen zu Preisen von 885 und 999 US-Dollar im Portfolio hat, ist der bisherige Quad-Core-Prozessor Core i7-975 Extreme Edition überflüssig geworden. Diesen entfernt Intel deshalb wie einige weitere CPUs aus dem Portfolio.

Saudi Arabia beats UAE to the punch, BlackBerry service to be ceased by Friday
Folks in the United Arab Emirates may have until October to enjoy BBM, but neighbor Saudi Arabia isn't the patient type. According to state news agency SPA, the Communications and Information Technology Commission for the country has ordered all BlackBerry services in the country to be halted by this Friday. HTC Glacier leaks out in GLBenchmark database, boasts really high scores
Remember the HTC Glacier spotted in a database a few months ago? Neither did we, but it's back and eating most every other smartphone's pixel-pushing lunch. Photon enhanced thermionic emission could double efficiency of solar cells
Engineers at Stanford have developed a process which can harness the light and heat of the sun simultaneously, which could lead to solar cells that are twice as efficient as those currently available. Called photon enhanced thermionic emission -- or PETE for short -- the process differs from traditional cells which lose efficiency as temperatures rise, and the materials needed to build the cells are cheap and widely available. The Wedgepad ($27 shipping only to the US), taking a cue from Veronica Belmont's Cat stand, is a comfortable iPad stand comprised of a wedged bean bag and four white elastic straps. Motorola Sage spotted in the wild, Mr. Blurrycam claims there's QWERTY on board
Sure, we'd heard tell of a Motorola Sage and briefly posited that the 850 / 1900MHz Android device could be AT&T's followup to the Backflip, but bless our bluetooth and count our digital compasses if this isn't it. Filed under: iPhoneMissing FieldTest? It was a "secret" iPhone application that used to report all kinds of basic signal and connectivity details for your phone. You could access it by typing a special sequence (*3001#12345#*) into the Phone app. Field Test would list your local cell towers, their ids, relative strengths, and so forth.
Apple ditched Field Test in iOS 4, which made a lot of people sad. Having that information in-hand can really help with certain diagnostic uses of the phone, not to mention assist with home brew location calls. (Core Location has not been available from the command line, making home brew workarounds a handy asset.)

Member of the illustrious iPhone Developer Program? Well, aren't you special? So special, in fact, that you're once again being granted access to a highly-coveted iOS build that the unwashed commoners can't get: yet another beta of iOS 4.1. This time around, it's beta 3, suggesting that Apple might be getting close to having this thing ready for the mass market; after all, it's been just a week since beta 2, and Apple tends to accelerate the pace when a release is drawing near.
