Apple Store undergoes Friday downtime [u]
The online Apple Store has temporarily shut down, observers note. Anecdotes suggest it went offline shortly before 3:45PM Eastern on Friday, and as of 4:40PM the store is still inactive, only displaying a notice about updating content. The Apple Store frequently goes down shortly before a new product release; nothing is expected today however, as the company typically puts products on sale in the morning, and usually early or in the middle of the week.

Review: OWC Mercury On-The-Go 64GB SSD drive
MacNN has reviewed OWC's Mercury On-The-Go Pro SSD drive. The unit is now available in three sizes: 64GB (reviewed), 128GB and 256GB. The drives utilize FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 connections, and come with cables and a carrying case -- an optional AC adapter is available, though the drives generally run on bus power. The drives have no moving parts, storing data in flash memory.

Sony Ericsson Q3 slump buoyed by new financing, a rumored November launch for XPERIA X3
Bad news, good news, and potentially great news time, folks. First with the bad: Sony Ericsson posted another loss for its fiscal third quarter, to the tune of 164 million euro (about $244 million US), blaming a large chunk of that on a drop in sales. Sales dropped year-over-year 40 percent to 1.6 billion euro, and unit shipments comparably down 45 percent. That's the bad, now what's good for SE is that its secured more financial backing to reshape its future into something more profitable. Samsung debuts own memory cards
Samsung has recently introduced its first self-branded memory cards with a release in Taiwan. The cards are meant for use in smartphones, digital cameras and other portable consumer electronics. Samsung claims it's entering the market as the market for mobile storage space is expected to grow exponentially in the near future, according to research.

Intel's Pine Trail Atoms now due January 3?
In spite of claims of an on time release, Intel's Atom processors using its Pine Trail architecture now won't show until the very start of 2010, a string of leaks have shown Thursday. The 1.66GHz N450 and 1.86GHz N470 are said by Fudzilla to ship on January 3rd and won't necessarily save battery life. Instead, the primary gain will come from moving graphics to the main processor core, reducing the number of chips from three to two and creating more space.

Fujitsu has just announced two "stylish" P Series LifeBooks, and we have our hands on the PR drivel to prove it. This affable pair of machines come in "charming" colors that "endow both notebooks with a premium yet snazzy feel, for standing out effortlessly in a corporate jungle or a social playground setting." Apple seeds third Mac OS X 10.6.2 beta
Apple is already distributing a third beta seed of Mac OS X 10.6.2 to developers, sources say. Called 10C527f, the build adds fixes for 13 different components of the OS. Of special emphasis are corrections for video errors, including several GraphicsDrivers problems which can cause screen flickering, crashes in OpenCL or stuttering while playing 1080p movies in QuickTime X. QuickTime itself has been fixed to allow some movies to play properly.

Quantum computer chips get infinitesimally closer to happening
We've already seen at least one (sort of) functional quantum processor, and one breakthrough after the other in quantum computing, but it looks like some researchers at Ohio State University have now made a breakthrough of their own that could possibly speed things up considerably. Motorola Sholes makes underwhelming FCC appearance
Well, it unfortunately doesn't include any elaborate test setups or a thorough dissection of the device, but it looks like the Motorola Sholes (a.k.a. Droid) has indeed finally made at showing at the FCC, although it's unfortunately (for some of us, anyway) the non-CDMA, European version of the phone. Interestingly, it appears that this may have been a small slip-up on Motorola's part, as all references to the phone other than the one above seem to have been omitted from the documents. Adobe experiments with new Photoshop technologies
Adobe is experimenting with several new technologies which could appear in Photoshop CS5, a new video suggests. Among these is the concept of "wet" paint, which can be smeared across a surface like its real-world counterpart. The paint dries and tapers off after a certain distance, and can also be blended with other paints in order to create new colors.

Nokia plays musical execs, moves CFO to new Mobile Phones post
There's nothing quite like a dismal quarterly report to shake things up, and that's exactly what Nokia's doing after losing over $800 million in its most recent three-month period. CFO Rick Simonson is being whisked over to a new post as head of the Mobile Phones group -- concentrating on Series 30 and Series 40 handsets -- within the Devices division, while Timo Ihamuotila, who currently leads up global sales, will take over for the CFO position being vacated by Simonson. Pages '09 quits when attempting to Save As...
I discovered a quite annoying issue with Pages '09 last night when attempting to change an already completed document and save it as a different copy. Pages would save the document but would immediately (sometimes even during the save) quit. This issue was recreated several times using the Save as command as well as when attempting to print and using the the Save as PDF option.

Windows 7 versus Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro: big cat's faster, 7 is better for games
CNET have taken the 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Snow Leopard for a spin around a 2008 MacBook Pro, and produced a decent first peek at comparative performance. Dell puts Android phone in US for 2010
Michael Dell today on Thursday said in a public talk on Thursday that the company plans to bring smartphones to the US. While unspecific on details, he claims that any devices that show will be "family members" of the mini 3i from China. Android 2.0 given a once-over, makes 1.6 look a little dated
Many Android-powered devices around the globe haven't even been granted an official Donut update yet, but 2.0 (Eclair, if you like) is already well on its way to completion, and Boy Genius Report has a rather extensive gallery of shots of the latest and greatest code in action. Origin outs 1TB external drive with hardware encryption
Origin Storage has recently announced the addition of two new capacities to its Data Locker external hard drives, with reportedly industry first 1TB and 750GB versions. Like the existing 320GB and 500GB versions, the new drives feature AES hardware encryption and a six- to 18-digit PIN password. The drives have an LCD keypad for password input, and can dismount the drive, toggle keytones on or off or erase the drive.

Safari given prominent position in European Windows?
Apple's Safari browser may occupy too central position in upcoming European versions of Windows, critics say. Users should soon be presented with a special browser ballot, explaining what web browsers are, and more crucially offering a choice of apps beyond Internet Explorer. The feature comes as a result of pressure from the European Commission, which has accused Microsoft of hampering competition by bundling IE with Windows, forcing developers to design for it and potentially limit their innovation.

MIT takes the wrappers off autonomous, robotic helicopter with intelligent navigation
Advances in autonomous helicopters have been many over the years, but as far as we can tell, there's essentially no limit to how awesome they can get. MIT's recently developed an autonomous, robotic helicopter which is also able to navigate itself intelligently through a changing environment. The helicopter, which is equipped with a dual-camera array and a laser scanner, maps its terrain in real time, identifying changes along the way. An integrated autonomous exploration module allows the heli to interact with the changing, unknown environment it is mapping. The helicopter was shown off at the AUVSI 2009 International Aerial Robotics Competition, completing five missions -- a feat not before seen in

Moto Droid footage shows Android 2.0
Motorola's Droid as well as Google's Android 2.0 hav been given a more definitive confirmation today with both a video (available below) and photos showing the two in action. Update für Googles Text & Tabellen macht Probleme
Google hat bestätigt, dass die am Montag eingespielte Aktualisierung für seine Online-Bürosoftware Text & Tabellen einige Fehler mit sich gebracht hat. Das Update habe dazu geführt, dass bestimmte Dateitypen nicht mehr hochgeladen werden können und Fehlermeldungen beim Drucken sowie Exportieren von Dokumenten auftreten. Auch die neu eingeführte Funktion zum gleichzeitigen Upload mehrerer Dateien sei fehlerhaft. Als Grund für die Probleme nennt das Unternehmen langsame Reaktionszeiten bei der Bereitstellung der Funktionen.

Nokia reorganizes to help ailing smartphone sales
Nokia took drastic action to improve its ailing smartphone business through a swap of executives as well as a reorganization of the company itself. Its Devices group has been split into a group for Smartphones, covering more advanced devices, as well as Mobile Phones, for its conventional Symbian S30 and S40 cellphones. Intel Sells for 1 Billion USD of ATOM CPU
During its last quarter financial report and its surprising 19% increase of its results, Intel executives massively commented the success of ATOM CPU. This cheap CPU (to produce and its associated low price on retail) turned out to be the Holy Grail for Intel during this economic crisis. The company announced to have already sold 1 billion $ of ATOM chipsets.
In addition, they also commented on the future of this CPU. As expected from previous reports, it will evolve towards a double core model while another model will offer a single core unit associated with a GPU on the same die. It already has a name, GMA 310. As it names indicates it, it will be an evolution of the current X3100 that powered the graphical performance of MacBook units prior the adoption of the NVIDIA G9400M, however, its performance levels are reported to be much higher even though no third party could have rationally evaluated those claims with some benchmarks.

Samsung brings LD-series notebook LCDs to the US
Samsung has finally brought its two LD-series notebook monitors to the US. Introduced in February for a release in Korea, the LD220 and LD190N are companion monitors and are meant to act as secondary displays for notebook PCs. The 22-inch LD220G sends its video signal over a USB port and sports a 1080p resolution. It otherwise acts as a USB hub, adding extra ports for adding more USB devices.

Tests: Snow Leopard overall faster than Windows 7
A comparison test today revealed that Mac OS X Snow Leopard is faster than Windows 7 in common tasks. Benchmarks run on a 2.53GHz MacBook Pro by CNET show that Apple's own operating system is about 38.5 percent faster in multitasking with media apps than Microsoft's platform and is also more responsive as a whole, taking less time to start up or shut down. iTunes audio encoding is also faster, though as an Apple program it's expected to run faster in its native operating system.

CNET tests show Snow Leopard besting Windows 7 on performance and battery life
CNET went to town running Windows 7 on a Bootcamp partition of a Mac (to get exact hardware parity) and found that Snow Leopard was usually faster than Windows 7 and, at the same time, used less power. Disappointment coming in Apple Q4 results?
Apple's fourth-quarter earnings could disappoint, says Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner. In spite of generally optimistic predictions elsewhere, the analyst is calling for "slightly disappointing" revenue, and urging investors to avoid buying shares until after Apple issues its report. The central issue is iPhone sales, which Reiner suggests may fall below his prediction of 6 million units, already lower than a consensus of just over 7 million.

As the Green wave grows, it seems the message is slowly percolating through, with fresh research this morning claiming consumers would be willing to buy a green handset. Apple’s recent moves toward environmental transparency could become another card to drive success in the smartphone war.
Results from a 2009 ABI Research survey of 1000 adult mobile phone users in North America reveal that approximately 7% would be willing to pay a premium for an environmentally-friendly handset. ATSC's mobile TV approved, LG/Samsung chips ready
The TV standards group ATSC today said its members have approved Mobile DTV, its over-the-air format made just for portable devices in North America. The gesture should let notebooks, smartphones and in-car units tune into free, live broadcasts of H.264 video even while moving at high speed. Sony Ericsson schreibt weiter rote Zahlen
Sony Ericsson kommt nicht aus der Verlustzone. Wie aus den heute vorgelegten Geschäftszahlen für das dritte Quartal 2009 hervorgeht, stieg der Fehlbetrag zwischen Juli und September auf 199 Millionen Euro. Sony Ericsson moves only 14.1m phones
Sony Ericsson today reported largely poor results for its summer quarter. The cellphone maker shipped 14.1 million phones during the three-month span; the number is an increase from 13.8 million in the spring but a sharp 45.1 percent drop from summer a year earlier. It successfully reduced the rate at which it has bled money down to a $244.7 million loss versus $317.8 million in spring but also saw some of its lowest revenue in recent memory, dropping slightly season-to-season to $2.4 billion but still far from nearly $4.2 billion a year earlier.

Die Registrierungsstelle Denic hat neue Richtlinien für die Top-Level-Domain (TLD) ".de" angekündigt. Sie treten am 23. Oktober in Kraft. Ab diesem Datum ist es möglich, ein- und zweistellige Domains sowie reine Zifferndomains zu registrieren. Darüber hinaus gibt die Denic Adressen zur Registrierung frei, die einem Kfz-Kennzeichen oder einer TLD entsprechen.

Wie die DeNIC überraschend bekannt gegeben hat, wird man ab dem 23. Oktober auch DE-Domains mit einer oder zwei Stellen uneingeschränkt zulassen. Google erzielt erneut Umsatz- und Gewinnsteigerung
Google hat im dritten Quartal, wie schon zwischen April und Juni, seinen Umsatz und Gewinn gesteigert. Die Bruttoeinnahmen wuchsen gegenüber dem Vorjahresquartal um sieben Prozent auf 5,94 Milliarden Dollar. Der Nettogewinn nach GAAP legte um 27 Prozent auf 1,64 Milliarden Dollar zu.

Until now, if you wanted to sell items inside your app, you had to make the app a paid app. Today, Apple is letting free apps sell services in-app. Will this be the end of the paid app? Why not just make all apps free as a trial and make in app purchases activate the full version?

iPhone 3GS demand outstripping supply
The San Jose Business Journal is reporting that Apple has been seeing iPhone 3GS shortages throughout the quarter. This can be seen as both good news (selling well) and bad news (could be selling more). Their evidence:
PJC Wireless analyst Mike Walkley in the first two months of the first most recent quarter showed retail shortages for the iPhone 3GS
Media reports indicate that the CEO of wireless carrier 3 Italia indicated that the company is selling 20k iPhones per month, but could sell more than double that amount if it had adequate supply.
As they note, this is the first full quarter reported since the iPhone 3GS was launched in late June. Apple's earnings call is on Octob

Intel Sells for 1 Billion USB of ATOM CPU
During its last quarter financial report and its surprising 19% increase of its results, Intel executives massively commented the success of ATOM CPU. This cheap CPU (to produce and its associated low price on retail) turned out to be the Holy Grail for Intel during this economic crisis. The company announced to have already sold 1 billion $ of ATOM chipsets.
In addition, they also commented on the future of this CPU. As expected from previous reports, it will evolve towards a double core model while another model will offer a single core unit associated with a GPU on the same die. It already has a name, GMA 310. As it names indicates it, it will be an evolution of the current X3100 that powered the graphical performance of MacBook units prior the adoption of the NVIDIA G9400M, however, its performance levels are reported to be much higher even though no third party could have rationally evaluated those claims with some benchmarks.

Not content with letting a good numeric opportunity pass it by, Microsoft Netherlands has announced that it'll be handing out up to 777 copies of Windows 7 to residents of the small town of Zevenhuizen, the name of which translates to "seven houses." Nokia registers a deficit for the first time in 10 years
Proof that nothing is set in stone in this world, Nokia the world leader of the mobile telephone recorded its first loss for 10 years with a hole of 559 million Euros for the third quarters. Of course the economic crisis explains these bad results since sales of the cheap telephones has largely been eroded. However the arrival of powerful competition on Smartphones, the iPhone and Blackberry in the lead, also took part in creating this fall of income. Like all the manufacturers in the world, Nokia makes a good part of its profit on the most expensive products, and they were seen losing part of their customers especially to Apple. Although Nokia is very optimistic on its return to making profits, they will have to deal with their new competitors i.e. the mobile manufacturers who start en masse to adopt Androïd and to propose telephones with tight margins.

Apple to Prepare an Ads Campaign Targeting Windows 7?
According to BusinessWeek, Apple would prepare an ads campaign targeting Windows 7 and aiming to minimize the impact of its future release on November 22nd. It should not be much different than the current ones aiming to demonstrate benefits of Mac over PC, however it could be more aggressive. It could again use the argument that Mac are less vulnerable than PC for virus, or would demonstrate the natural evolution of having a iPhone/iPod then getting a Mac. The campaign could also use the difficulties to migrate from XP to Windows 7, most likely explaining that the procedure being so difficult it might be easier to get a Mac.This information leaks while Apple should unveil its last quarter results with expected new records. XBits Labs performed an extensive comparison of the most popular SSDs including our favorite models: Intel X25-M and OCZ models (including Vertex units). It is never easy to draw conclusion as it is not as simple as 0 and 1, or black and white. Each manufacturer is trying to demonstrate that its models are the best ones, it is often true depending on the selected/defined parameter(s) and/or optimized functions. Vertex are known for offering a very high performance level in sequential reading and writing mode both reaching or even being higher than 200 MB/s. Intel X25-M is primarily aiming to deliver the highest number of operation per second, offering excellent results in random writing/reading of small files, however, sequential performance are limited to 85 MB/s

Magic Printer iPhone app enables remote printing
Wellala has released a remote printing app for the iPhone and iPod touch, Print Magic. The app allows users to print content from the mobile device via Wi-Fi, without the need to first sync to a computer. It can print directly to network printers that support the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP), along with any printer capable of sharing from a Mac via Printer Sharing. Motorola Droid startup teased, obnoxious robot voice and all (video)
None too long after its first headshot was posted did Motorola Droid (a.k.a. Sholes) make a covert encore appearance, only showing off this time the startup process. It provides a bit more evidence -- as if we really needed any -- that the phone's bound for Verizon's network, and any Android customizations, at least from the initial glance, are nothing to write home about. Apple third in A.T. Kearney Global Champions 2009 study
Global management consulting firm A.T. Kearney has placed Apple on its Global Champions 2009 study. Apple was third overall, behind Nintendo (1st) and Google (2nd) in the study which focused on companies that outperformed peers over the past five years. Most of the top 25 companies managed 15 percent growth, compared to an average 8 percent growth for the entire sample of 2500 companies. Apple managed 41 percent median sales growth and 24 percent growth in median value.

Tim Berners-Lee, the man credited with creating the World Wide Web, recently said that his only real regret about the whole shebang is forcing people to type out the (essentially unnecessary) double slash before the 'http' in URLs. Rawzor brings RAW image compression to Mac
Rawzor has updated its lossless RAW image-compression utility with support for Mac OS X. The self-titled Rawzor software, in Beta version 0.45, delivers compression rates of 20-60 percent with no change to image quality or metadata. Rawzor promises a complete restoration of the original file on decompression, and Rawzor has an SDK that allows independent RAW processing software to open the compressed .rwz files. The new Mac-compatible version has a core engine fully ported for Mac.

Recosoft has launched a new PDF converter, PDF2Office, for iWork '08 and '09. The software converts PDF files by changing each page to an equivalent format for either Keynote or Pages. iPhone 3GS demand outstripping suply
The San Jose Business Journal is reporting that Apple has been seeing iPhone 3GS shortages throughout the quarter. This can be seen as both good news (selling well) and bad news (could be selling more). Their evidence:
PJC Wireless analyst Mike Walkley in the first two months of the first most recent quarter showed retail shortages for the iPhone 3GS
Media reports indicate that the CEO of wireless carrier 3 Italia indicated that the company is selling 20k iPhones per month, but could sell more than double that amount if it had adequate supply.
As they note, this is the first full quarter reported since the iPhone 3GS was launched in late June. Apple's earnings call is on Octob

Apple allows in-app purchasing for free App Store apps
Apple is now allowing developers of free App Store programs to include in-app purchasing. This should mean the end of two versions of programs - a free 'lite' version and the paid-for full program, as developers can activate additional features with in-app purchasing.

Robotic 'mood tail' is everything you hope it to be, and more
Why hang on to your emotions when you can wag them proudly with a robotic mood tail? Sure, you may never have asked that question yourself, but intrepid DIYer Wei-Chieh Tseng seemingly has, and he's done something about it. Apparently, the tail makes use of the ever dependable Arduino and an RFID reader to detect different emotion cards that set off varying degrees of tail-wagging, or you can simply control the tail yourself using a Wii nunchuck -- because, why not? Intel Shipped 1 Billion ATOM CPU
During its last quarter financial report and its surprising 19% increase of its results, Intel executives massively commented the success of ATOM CPU. This cheap CPU (to produce and its associated low price on retail) turned out to be the Holy Grail for Intel during this economic crisis. The company announced to have already sold 1 billion unit!
In addition, they also commented on the future of this CPU. As expected from previous reports, it will evolve towards a double core model while another model will offer a single core unit associated with a GPU on the same die. It already has a name, GMA 310. Free iPhone apps can now include in-app purchases
One of Apple's many curious restrictions on iPhone apps has now been lifted. It used to be that, in order for developers to have microtransactions / in-app purchases, they had to charge something upfront for the software, essentially requiring consumers to pay at least twice, or not at all. Well, all that's changed, as the company has sent word to its developer community that the restriction has been lifted, meaning those annoying "Lite" and "Full" versions cluttering the app store can now be one and the same, with folks downloading the demo and paying to upgrade from within the app itself, a model that's worked to success in other software

Sidekick outage may have cost MS $700,000 per day
Microsoft may owe T-Mobile millions of dollars for its just-concluding Sidekick outage, an inside tip may have revealed today. Like most carriers, T-Mobile is believed to have a service level agreement (SLA) with Microsoft and Danger to guarantee uptime but may have a particularly costly deal with Microsoft. The MobileCrunch source claims that Microsoft will likely pay a rate roughly equal to $700,000 per day for the period it couldn't guarantee 99.5 percent availability of Sidekick services.

AMD beats Q3 forecast with $128m net loss
AMD on Thursday reported its third-quarter financial results, indicating an 18 percent revenue increase from the previous quarter.
