Cellphones thinner than ever

Strategy Analytics latest look at its spec-tracking (hence the name) SpecTRAX database of wireless devices has unearthed a few juicy tidbits of information, none more notable than the fact that phone thickness is at a new all-time low -- 13.96mm on average, the first time the metric has ever fallen below 14mm (for comparison, Motorola's original DynaTAC clocked in around 89mm, so we're making some solid improvement there). USB penetration is at a new high, too, supported by some 85 percent of newly-entered devices in the database, and battery life is up 25 percent from two years ago. T-Mobile: we probably lost all your Sidekick data

Well, this is shaping up to be one of the biggest disasters in the history of cloud computing, and certainly the largest blow to Danger and the Sidekick platform: T-Mobile's now reporting that personal data stored on Sidekicks has "almost certainly has been lost as a result of a server failure at Microsoft/Danger." They're still looking for a way to recover it, but they're not giving users a lot of hope -- meanwhile, servers are still on the fritz and customers are being advised not to let their devices power down because anything that's still on there will be lost the next time the device is turned on. Acer issues recall for some Aspire laptops

Acer's issued a voluntary recall for some of its Aspire laptops -- all of which were manufactured before September 15th of this year. It seems that some of them are experiencing an overheat of the microphone cable after "repeated" and "extreme" pressure is applied to the left palm rest. The affected models include the AS3410, AS3810T, AS3810TG, AS3810TZ and AS3810TZG. Apple releases Epson Driver update; how to change printer drivers

Apple has released an update to the Epson printer drivers for OS X 10.6.1 Snow Leopard. The update is a bundle of all the latest drivers for supported Epson printers, which addresses bugs in previous versions under Snow Leopard and adds support for the latest printing and scanning devices.

CNET reviews Psystar OpenQ

This is a great example of "you get what you pay for".  CNET spends most of the video pointing and laughing at the hardware. We especially appreciate the Parallel, Serial and PS2 ports. Those will definitely come in handy.  And with quality components like that, who cares if they are in business in a year?  CNET says that if you want OSX on the cheapest possible machine, get this.  We'd say wait a few weeks and get a $499 Mini.

Apple seeds new Mac OS X 10.6.2 beta to developers

Apple has reportedly provided a second beta release of its Mac OS X 10.6.2 update (labeled 10C514f) to developers, which incorporates a series of bug fixes and improved support. We've already heard first-hand how Yamaha can make surround sound emerge from a single soundbar, and now the outfit's wowing again here at CEATEC. It's latest aural innovation was tucked quietly away within its booth, disguised as an advertorial for the show itself. We've been playing with Tweetie 2 for the iPhone for a bit and have to say really makes Twittering easy.  Somehow atebits has added a lot of features without taking away the simplicity of the original app.   One small catch: If you've already downloaded Tweetie, you'll have to buy it again. The kids at Liliputing got their hands on the Asus Eee Top ET2002 all-in-one recently and were cool enough to both put it through its paces and clue us in on their findings. According to the reviewer the device, which sports a 1.6GHz Dual Core Atom 330 processor, a 20-inch / 1600 x 900 pixel display, 2GB of RAM, and a 320GB hard drive, was "impressive in many ways." It easily handles 1080p playback and video games that would cause "most Intel-Atom based PCs to choke." Windows 7 sold early at college bookstore, order somehow maintained

Street dates are invariably broken somehow, somewhere even when it comes to the biggest products and companies, and Microsoft is certainly no exception, with it now able to chalk up at least one sold copy on the Windows 7 charts thanks to an exceptionally eager college bookstore. Microsoft to try free, ad-based Office

Microsoft this week said that it would venture into free productivity apps with a Starter Edition of Office 2010 for Windows. The special version will be free to use but will have feature-reduced versions of Excel and Word as well as ads that run in a sidebar with the app window. It will only come with a new PC rather than come as a download, but it will have an option to download a more complete version such as Home & Student Edition.

AT&T data usage 'management' plans aimed at iPhone users?

AT&T's Wireless CEO Ralph de la Vega, speaking at a CTIA keynote this week, hinted about "managing" iPhone users' data accounts. The executive spoke broadly about a small portion of users that account for an extremely large percentage of overall bandwidth. iDFX app enhances audio playback on iPods

Power Technology has launched iDFX, a new app claimed to improve playback quality of MP3 and AAC files on an iPod or other mobile device. The software works as an iTunes accessory and recodes the user's music files in an attempt to recover the same quality that existed in the original CD recordings. In order to do this, the software re-synthesizes damaged or missing harmonics while improving the low frequency range of the track.
