NVIDIA Tegra to power next-gen Nintendo DS?
While Microsoft tries to figure out if it should take Tegra-powered Zune HD in a gaming direction or the Xbox in a portable direction, there are wild rumorings from the underground that claim Nintendo is planning on using Tegra to power a next generation DS handheld. The primary source on this comes from Bright Side of News (which doesn't have a big track record to judge by), who claims the debut is planned for late 2010 and conjectures that the device could either use the upcoming 45nm 2nd-gen Tegra tech, or the existing, tried-and-true 65nm chip. Apple updates iMovie to 8.0.5
Apple has released an update to iMovie, bringing the version to 8.0.5 and adding improved compatibility with video capture devices. The update is 35.56MB and should be available through Software Update for people with iLife installed. It can also be downloaded here.

Apple to unlock FM radio in iPhone, iPod touch?
A rumor today claims that Apple is developing software to expose FM radio tuning for certain models of the iPhone and iPod touch. The software would likely have the same feature set as the current iPod nano and could tag songs to buy them in iTunes; the Internet connection would appropriately give the option of buying the song immediately instead of waiting for the next computer sync. Though not discussed by the source, the DVR-like live pause mode is a probable addition as well.

Intel: 1,9 Mrd. US-Dollar Gewinn im 3. Quartal
Am Dienstagabend nach Börsenschluss hat Intel die Quartalszahlen für das abgelaufene dritte Quartal 2009 präsentiert. iTunes LP: Das neue Format kostenlos testen
Zusammen mit iTunes 9 hat Apple im September das neue Format iTunes LP vorgestellt. Angelehnt an das klassische Klappcover bei Vinyl-LPs erhält man gegen einen Aufpreis von drei bis sechs Euro ein aus Musik, Videos, Bildern und weiteren Zugaben geschnürtes, attraktiv aufgemachtes Gesamtpaket.
In den letzten Tagen kamen Gerüchte auf, nach denen Apple das neue Format für Indie-Labels komplett sperren, beziehungsweise pauschal eine "Production Fee" von 10.000 Dollar verlangen soll. Dies wurde inzwischen jedoch von Apple dementiert: Man wolle in Kürze die Spezifikationen offen legen, um sowohl den Major- wie auch Indie-Labels die Produktion von iTunes LPs zu ermöglichen.

Apple's iMovie 8.0.5 gains iFrame, iPod nano video support
Apple on Tuesday released iMovie 8.0.5, an update to its free movie editing software bundled with all new Macs. According to Apple, the update improves compatibility with a number of devices and fixes other minor issues, including improved compatibility with camcorders using the iFrame video format and with importing video captured on the iPod nano as well as fixed problems with resizing the iMovie window during playback. Rhapsody iPhone app to gain offline playback
A forthcoming version of Real's Rhapsody iPhone app should support offline listening, a designer of the software says. Although Rhapsody mobile service is priced at $15 a month, iPhone and iPod users can currently only stream music, whether through Wi-Fi or 3G. Offline listening would likely allow the storage of tracks for the duration of a subscription, making the app more practical in areas with bad or inconsistent connections.

GlideTV bows unusual HTPC trackpad remote
Catering explicitly to home theater computers, GlideTV today produced an unusual controller known as the Navigator. The bowl-shaped peripheral has a trackpad for mouse pointing but is surrounded by AV controls and a directional pad that ease navigating through common apps. It can steer through Front Row and iTunes on Macs, Windows Media Center, and platform-independent apps like Boxee or SageTV.

UK: Phones 4U confirms iPhone offer; Orange upgrades 3G network for Apple mobile
Phones 4U this morning confirmed it will join Carphone Warehouse in selling iPhones on the high street for Apple’s now two iPhone carriers, Orange and O2. This suggests models from Vodafone may also be made available when the device also reaches that network next year.
In related news, Orange this morning confirmed it’s engaged in a massive upgrade push to support the iPhone on its network when it ships. "We have been really busy getting ready for this," said UK vice president of sales and loyalty Guillaume van Gaver told Mobile News.

Steve Jobs is 'bigger than Oprah'
From the Apple human interest department, a new survey of US teenagers this morning reveals that Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, is considered bigger than Oprah Winfrey.
Apple’s boss is the person US teens aged between 12-17-years most admire because “he has made the world a better place.”
One thousand teenagers were asked to choose between business entrepreneurs, those who had started their own business. Others in the list included Tony Hawk, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Kimora Lee Simmons, Oprah Winfrey and Mark Zuckerberg. Steve Jobs took the poll.

Smartphone wars: Will ARM takeover bid become the new front line?
ARM Holdings makes it into the news a lot more than it used to, as the company’s processor designs emerge as a de rigeur standard for mobile devices, including the iPhone.
Indeed, when it comes to the netbook and smartphone markets, the company is poised to overtake Intel in marketshare within three years, reckons semiconductor analyst, Didier Scemama, at ABN AMRO.

We've just received a tip that an iPhone radio.app is being developed in-house by Apple for use on the iPhone and iPod touch. From what we know, the app will be allowed to operate in the background like iPod.app and will offer the same functionality as the FM radio in the new iPod Nanos. The source mentioned that this application could also be incorporated into the iPod.app before release.
The holdup on this app is that Apple is trying to integrate the Mobile iTunes Store purchases into the functionality of the program. For instance, if you like a song you are listening to on the radio (and that station supports tagging and you are in the US), you will be able to push a button and see the song (and all of the information around it) in the iTunes Mobile store. Plastic Logic rebuffs claim of color e-reader
Plastic Logic today denied reports that it would have a color e-book reader ready by spring. The company tells PCPro that the Barnes & Noble contact was "misinformed" and further insists he wasn't speaking in an official capacity for the American book retailer. A color reader is still in development but isn't due to ship this year, a spokesperson says.

3 and T-Mobile planning backdoor UK iPhone distribution?
T-Mobile is not the only UK carrier distributing iPhones unofficially, a report claims. The Telegraph says it has learned that 3 is also engaged in giving iPhones to its most lucrative customers, though 3's involvement in the strategy is thought to be recent, having only begun in recent weeks. T-Mobile has allegedly been giving away iPhones since the summer.

Keepin' it real fake, part CCXXXIX: Genuine Android shipping on a counterfeit Storm
Looks like someone in Shenzhen had time to kill overnight at the Storm factory -- and they've put it to good use. Hitachi outs enterprise-grade, 15,000RPM Ultrastar drives
Hitachi has released two new hard drives on Tuesday, both turning at the fastest-possible 15,000RPM design. Part of the Ultrastar series, this includes the company's first 2.5-inch drive with the extra speed, the C15K147, and the firm's fourth-generation 3.5-inch drive, the 600GB 15K600. Either has a 6Gbps SCSI (SAS) interface, though the latter can be had with a 4Gbps Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (FCAL) interface as well. The 15K600 also has one third more the capacity of its predecessor while claimed to be 23 percent faster.

Apple to open iTunes LP standard for independent labels
Apple will "soon" open the iTunes LP standard to everyone, according to a company spokesperson. The format extends iTunes' digital liner notes to allow for DVD-like features, such as photo galleries, elaborate artwork and supplemental video. That material has so far been reserved for the four major record labels however, which include Warner, EMI, Sony BMG and Universal.

Epson's PictureMate line is one with a long-standing history, but as with most everything else in consumer electronics, the latest in the lineup seems to have shrunk. The appropriately named PictureMate Charm is a kinda-sorta portable printing solution, delivering 4- x 6-inch color prints in as little as 37 seconds. The mini printer also boasts a 2.5-inch LCD, a multicard reader, optional Bluetooth support (via a separate adapter) and room for either 150 glossy sheets or 100 matte sheets of 4- x 6-inch paper. Data "loss" in OS X: Is there really a heightened risk?
Recently there have been a number of reports around the data loss bug that, while rare, can cause a Snow Leopard user's home folder to be deleted upon logging into and out of the guest account. These reports may have people concerned about their data in OS X, but in reality it is a very rare and easy bug to avoid, and also it is much easier to inadvertently overwrite a file or accidentally trash one than be caught by this bug and other behaviors that may lead to data loss.

Apple stung with criticism for inadequate App Store refunds
Apple is facing new media criticism over the absence of a comprehensive App Store refund policy, most prominently from the New York Times. One writer notes that while people can get refunds if a download is delayed, or not properly executed, it is impossible to get money back based purely on quality complaints. The issue can become serious when dealing with more expensive iPhone apps, such as navigation software. Nokia Booklet 3G hands-on (with video!)
That $599 non-subsidized price still sounds silly -- and $299 with a 2-year $60 monthly contract seems almost more extreme -- but there's no denying that the Booklet 3G is a truly premium netbook. It's light, strong and very elegant, with an aluminum chassis, wonderful keyboard and spacious two-finger-scroll touchpad. Unfortunately, those netbook innards deliver about what you'd expect in the performance arena (almost too slow for web browsing), and NY's AT&T 3G coverage certainly doesn't serve the laptop well (as demonstrated on video after the break). Sources: Bell to carry iPhone Nov. 4
The iPhone for Bell should arrive near the very start of November and will have very familiar device and rate pricing, according to Electronista sources. People familiar with the plans say the iPhone 3GS and 3G are both due to arrive on November 4th, which should also mark the formal start of the Canadian provider's HSPA-based 3G network. The news is corroborated by earlier word of Telus training ending at the same time and suggests Bell and Telus will have their networks and iPhone sales ready at the same time.

We had a sneaking suspicion that it was too good to be true, and now Plastic Logic has stepped forward to officially kill our pipe dreams. Disney's retail division is turning to Apple and its CEO, Steve Jobs, for help in redesigning its 340 American and European retail stores, says the New York Times. VUDU throwing Rotten Tomatoes reviews on every movie it sells
Next step for VUDU after adding LG's BD390 to its list of compatible players? The streaming service is now trying to help you figure out which movie to watch with help from the website Rotten Tomatoes, integrating its ratings directly into the movie listings as seen above. Viewers can sort by Tomatometer score and see quotes from top reviews directly on their HDTV screen. Sure it's not auto Twitter updates and IMDB clippings on what scene, movie and actor you're watching, but if they're not going to reduce the cost per rented (or purchased) streaming flick, at least VUDU can help you pick one that's actually good. SanDisk ships first memory cards based on X4 tech
SanDisk achieved a technical milestone today by shipping its first products based on four-bit-per-cell (4BPC) storage. Both standard SDHC and Memory Stick Pro Duo cards now use the much denser storage (versus existing 2BPC or 3BPC) to carry all their storage on 64-gigabit (8GB) chips; the move lets even a 16GB card use just two chips and should scale to allow for 64GB and larger-capacity cards in the future. It should also have implications for solid-state drives and others that depend on multi-level cell storage.

Smartphone wars: Will ARM takeover bid become the new front line?
ARM Holdings makes it into the news a lot more than it used to, as the company’s processor designs emerge as a de rigeur standard for mobile devices, including the iPhone.

The unofficial iPhone Dev Team team has released PwnageTool 3.1.4, an update to its Mac hacking utility for iPhones and iPods. The latest version is mainly addressed at unlocking iPhone 3.1.2, which was released last Thursday. 2G, 3G and 3GS iPhones are supported, as well as the first- and second-generation iPod touch, though the latter devices can only be jailbroken. We already saw the Picsio GC-FM1's splashy debut for Japan, but now JVC is announcing the camera for a Stateside release. UK adds second official third-party iPhone retailer
UK retailer Phones 4u has announced a deal to begin selling the iPhone, both online and through its stores. Devices will be paired either with the original UK iPhone carrier, O2, or else Orange, which is slated to begin support later this year. Microsoft's launch next week of Windows 7 could paradoxically help Apple's Mac sales, analyst data shows today. Broadpoint AmTech researcher Brian Marshall notes that, historically, every major Windows release in the past 10 years has coincided with a significant spike in Mac purchases either during the same calendar quarter or within a few quarters afterwards. JVC brings 1080p pocket camera to the US
JVC on Tuesday exported its first-ever pocket camcorder to US shores. The Picsio GC-FM1 is one of the few cameras its size to record in 1080p (albeit 4:3) at a full 30 frames per second with image stabilization. It also has a 720p, 60FPS shooting mode and a toggle to switch to 8-megapixel still image shooting. All movies are captured in H.264 (AVCHD) in a format that can be immediately sent to iMovie, iTunes or YouTube without being transcoded first.

Phones 4U this morning confirmed it will join Carphone Warehouse in selling iPhones on the high street for Apple’s now two iPhone carriers, Orange and O2. This suggests models from Vodafone may also be made available when the device also reaches that network next year.

Sonos rolls ZonePlayer S5 for iPhone, iPod owners
Sonos adapted to the changing nature of its market today through the ZonePlayer S5. Rather than bundle a dedicated controller or a bridge unit, the S5 depends on either the iPhone app or computer software to let an iPhone, iPod touch, Mac or Windows PC on the local network steer all its playback. Problembericht zu MobileMe: Möglicherweise Zugriff auf fremde Kontaktdaten möglich?
Bis jetzt hat sich Apple noch nicht zu diesem Bericht geäußert bzw. das Problem bestätigt, daher muss man die Schilderung noch mit etwas Vorsicht genießen. Einem Bericht zufolge führte ein Fehler dazu, dass über die Web-Oberfläche von MobileMe Kontaktdaten angezeigt wurden, die gar nicht zu diesem Account gehörten sondern von anderen Benutzern stammen. Im konkreten Fall geschah die Verwechslung der Daten bei der Verlängerung des Zugangs.

Bitkom: PC-Verkäufe ziehen 2009 trotz Krise kräftig an

Nach dem Ausfall des Cloud-Diensts für Sidekick-Nutzer hat T-Mobile USA mitgeteilt, dass einige der gelöschten Daten - entgegen erster Vermutungen - wiederhergestellt werden können. Apple has confirmed it is “aware” of the widely-reported Snow Leopard data-munching bug which could occur when users logged in.

Several manufacturers making use of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 and 275 announced to have stopped production of such GPU-based graphic cards. The reason is rather unusual and is worth a news. While production usually stops because the product is flagged EOL, here this is the lack of GPU that pushed manufacturers to stop production.NVIDIA only ships small volumes, not large enough to maintain production lines. There is no official reason for such status, maybe NVIDIA wishes to move faster to Fermi, but it still needs a bit of time, and the risk is rather high as the new Radeon HD 5750 and 5770 are far better than the current NVIDIA models, but they also share with them a limited availability. It is unclear if such strategy from NVIDIA would also affect the GeForce GTX 285 Mac Edition, but the higher price tag and the limited compatibility to only recent Mac Pro models should not be a real problem as it has never been a mass product.

Das Problem ist bekannt: Man ist in einer fremden Stadt und braucht Bargeld, möchte aber beim Geldabheben Gebühren vermeiden. Mit der App "iPostbank" findet ab sofort jeder Kunde auf dem iPhone oder iPod touch schnell den nächstgelegenen Geldautomaten der Postbank oder der Cash Group. Ebenfalls verzeichnet sind die mehreren tausend Filialen von Postbank und Deutscher Post. Auch die nächste Shell-Tankstelle mit dem neuen Postbank Bargeld-Service kennt iPostbank schon. Wirklich praktisch: vor dem Abheben kann man sich den aktuellen Kontostand anzeigen lassen.
Bei der Entwicklung der App konnte die Postbank auf die Erfahrung von und mit über 100.000 Pilotkunden zurückgreifen, die bereits Mobile-Banking betreiben. Die Menüführung entspricht dem bekannten iBanking via Browser, das die Kunden bereits seit 2007 rege nutzen. Rund die Hälfte aller mobilen Bankgeschäfte werden heute schon bei der Postbank über das iPhone erledigt, den Rest teilen sich Endgeräte von Nokia, HTC, SonyEriccson und Blackberry.

Compaq CQ61 does 15.6-inch screen and "real" processor for $399, wonders what all that netbook fuss was about

onOne has launched DSLR Camera Remote 1.2, an update to its Canon EOS and Nikon DSLR remote-control software that works with an iPhone or iPod touch. The app provides tools for controlling the camera settings such as shutter speed or aperture, as well as the ability to view images shot on the camera from the userís mobile device. HP's ProBook 6x45b line handles a spill with aplomb (on video!)
While we don't normally find ourselves terribly jealous of laptops designed for massive rollouts at medium and large businesses, the new ProBook and 6545b (15.6-inch) and 6445b (14-inch) almost have us ready to reassess that assumption. They're pretty boring AMD-powered workhorses on the surface, but HP has reworked the keyboard tray so that it automatically drains spills through the laptop and out through the bottom -- without running past any of the vitals. It's not foolproof, but it's a great first stab at making us all a little safer from accidents -- and hopefully finds its way into consumer lines sooner rather than later. HP unveils 42-inch multi-touch display
HP's large-scale introductions on Tuesday brought about one of the largest multi-touch displays available. The LD4200tm produces a 42-inch, 1080p picture but uses a combination of infrared and imaging sensors to recognize two-point gestures such as pinching to zoom. Opting for this approach is less costly than a capacitive touchscreen as it only needs to detect when light is broken rather than wire up the entire display.

HP early today is making an aggressive push into touchscreen PCs with two key updates to its TouchSmart home all-in-ones. The TouchSmart 300 and 600 add true multi-touch input and have significantly expanded use for the technology: they can not only use pinch-to-zoom, flicks and other gestures in the general operating system thanks to Windows 7 but in several new touch apps for the systems' custom front end. They can now navigate Hulu or Netflix streaming video, stream Pandora or Rhapsody music, or update and follow Twitter feeds all primarily using touch.

HP TouchSmart 300 and 600 bump the software to the next level, tx2 comes along for the ride
While the hardware on the outside looks to hardly be a departure from the norm for HP's TouchSmart line, there's some exciting stuff going on under the hood. Of course, multitouch is the big buzz this season with Windows 7 onboard and those fancy Surface apps are fine to play with, but more important is what HP is doing with its own TouchSmart application. Prosoft Engineering has released Data Rescue 3, a new upgrade to its data recovery software. The app is designed to help users retrieve files from a corrupt hard drive, as well as restore files that have been previously deleted. Apple just sent us a statement about that nasty Snow Leopard Guest Account bug that deletes user data -- it's not much, but at least the people in charge are working on things.
We are aware of the issue, which occurs only in extremely rare cases, and we are working on a fix.

Green laser for microprojectors developed, microraves soon to follow
Japanese company QD Laser has apparently developed a green laser which could up the ante in the HD pico projector market. The laser -- which is just 5.6mm in diameter and outputs a 532 nanometer, pure green light -- was shown off as a working prototype at CEATEC. Apple has confirmed it is “aware” of the widely-reported Snow Leopard data-munching bug which could occur when users logged in.

Bad News for EFI 1.7-basedMacBook Pro Owners
Many owners of the MacBook Pro mid-2009, sporting the EFI 1.7 are experiencing problems (here for a summary). With a variable frequency, the laptop will freeze for couple of seconds to one minute, similarly to a HD failure. Several hypotheses have been proposed, without much success, and many users are expecting an EFI update to fix the issue.Well, it seems that we will still have to wait for a longer time as a reliable source told us that there is no one defined to work on this issue at Apple, and there is no EFI 1.8 update planned for the moment. Dell offers more looks at "ultra-thin" Adamo XPS laptop
Dell on Monday offered two new product shots of its upcoming Adamo XPS" ultra-thin laptop. The highly stylized laptop, which was unveiled in early September, is thinner than the Apple's revolutionary MacBook Air--under 10mm thick. Although few details have been disclosed, the ultra-sleek laptop appears to rely on a unique, underside hinge to reach its dimensions.
