In App purchases now available to developers of free apps
Until now, if you wanted to sell items inside your app, you had to make the app a paid app. Today, Apple is letting free apps sell services in-app. Will this be the end of the paid app? Why not just make all apps free as a trial and make in app purchases activate the full version?

Samsung Pixon 12 phonecamera hybrid gets tested
It's probably best to think of Samsung's Pixon 12 not as a phone with a killer camera, but more so as a good point-and-shoot with phone capabilities tacked on. Our friends at Engadget Chinese managed to get some hands-on with the device, and while they say the voice and SMS portion is nothing to write home about, the form factor and AMOLED screen seems quite nice and the sample pictures come out even nicer. Internetzensurgesetz wird für ein Jahr ausgesetzt
Die Anwendung des Internetzensurgesetzes wird für ein Jahr ausgesetzt. Darauf einigte sich die Arbeitsgruppe Innen und Recht bei den schwarz-gelben Koalitionsverhandlungen. In dieser Zeit soll das BKA versuchen, eine Löschung von kinderpornografischen Seiten zu erreichen. Nach Ablauf des Jahres soll evaluiert werden, ob diese Maßnahme erfolgreich gewesen ist, oder ob eine Sperre mittels DNS-Fälschungen erforderlich ist.

Memorex enters HD pocket camcorders
Not normally known for capturing video itself, Memorex today upgraded its pocketable video cameras with two sleeker models. The 720p-capable MyVideo HD and standard definition MyVideo VGA emulate the same basic concept as Flip cameras but have the advantages of 2X digital zoom and longer battery life. The MyVideo HD's more demanding video gives it a still long 2.5 hours of recording time, while the VGA model can capture for up to five hours.

Pocket steel drums aren't made of steel, aren't really drums (video)
You'd be surprised how many requests we get for more gadgets that help our readers celebrate their love of the Caribbean culture and music. Luckily for us, the kids at Vat19 are now hawking a mini steel drum set that seems like it just might do the trick (that is, if the 'trick' can be 'done' by putting more red, yellow, and green-colored crap on your desk). By all accounts, this thing is pretty unexceptional -- it'll let you bang out an 8 note major scale, let you record your performance, and that's about it. Hell, it doesn't even really sound like steel drums! But the distributor did manage to get it to play Just A Friend by the incomparable Biz Markie -- and in our eyes, that's definitely worth a mention

AMD: Bessere Umsätze aber weiterhin Verluste

Endpoint Protector 2009 update adds Snow Leopard support
CoSoSys has released a new version of Endpoint Protector 2009, its data-loss prevention and endpoint security application. The update adds support for Mac OS X Snow Leopard, along with the soon-to-be-launched Windows 7. Endpoint Protector is designed to protect confidential data, and provides tools for monitoring and controlling activities on other systems. UK theaters banning notebooks over piracy fears
UK movie theater chain Cineworld has introduced a new policy that does not allow patrons to bring in notebook PCs to the auditoriums, UK resident Jeremy Nicholas wrote on his blog. The policy was supposedly introduced to help fight piracy, where bootleggers go to see a movie and record it with an electronic device. Nicholas, however, was denied entry despite his Sony VAIO's lack of an integrated webcam, making it impossible to record the main attraction.

PSP to HDMI, all with one giant converter box
Props to Lenkeng for dressing up their otherwise anonymous VGA-to-HDMI converter box with a PSP-related angle -- the LKV8000 comes with the necessary cables to take your PSP-2000 or above's 480p video output and push out a 720p HDMI signal complete with stereo audio. iPhone 3GS jailbreaking will persist, says iPhone Dev Team
Jailbreaking indeed remains an option for the iPhone 3GS, says a member of the unofficial iPhone Dev Team. "Itís not going to be impossible to jailbreak even if the exploit we used is gone," notes Eric McDonald, responding to some media reports claiming that 3GS jailbreaks might be impossible with the closure of the 24kpwn exploit. Apple has begun shipping 3GS units with a new bootrom, rendering the hole ineffective.

Memorex MyVideo pocket camcorders are content to fit the mold
Memorex has never exactly been one to go out on a limb with its consumer electronics, and it looks like that's especially true of its new MyVideo pocket camcorders, which the company itself doesn't even bother to go into much detail about in its press release -- other than that they'll let you "zoom in on life's moments before they zoom out," of course. A bit more digging turns up some expectedly standard specs, however, including 4GB of memory and an HDMI port on the MyVideo HD model and 2GB and no HDMI on the MyVideo VGA, along with a two-inch screen and the usual integrated USB connector on each. Then again, they do just cost $99.99 and $129.99, and seem like a prime candidate for discounts in the run up to the holiday season.

Court rules ASCAP can't seek ringtone royalties
A Southern District of New York federal court yesterday ruled (PDF) that ringtones don't constitute performances and so are exempt from separate royalties. The decision by Judge Denise Cote rejects beliefs by royalty group ASCAP that the carrier is responsible for royalties for any ringtone played in public and grants the complainant Verizon a summary judgment that the only valid royalty is the original for the music file itself.

Blu-ray pulled from new iMacs at last moment?
Blu-ray drives were pulled as an option for upcoming iMacs with little time to spare, anonymous sources claim. People described only as "close" to Apple say that Blu-ray support was originally anticipated for a near-future iMac refresh, but that it was nixed just before the computers went into production last month. Regardless, buyers would only have been able to get a Blu-ray drive as part of a custom order.

How lower Mac price points and Windows 7 will affect Apple troubleshooting
Rumors around the Internet continue to make mention of the possibilities of Apple initiating a deft attack, targeting the pending Windows 7 release. Advertisements are just the first step with Senior Apple VP Phil Schiller stating that the Microsoft OS upgrade process presents a "very good opportunity for us", which could very well include price reductions in Apple's lineup to better compete with low-cost PCs. Nokia smartphone share falls on iPhone pressure
Nokia this morning revealed a chunk of lost smartphone marketshare, a $1.35 billion hit from its networks unit and more bad news generating an immediate sell-off of the company’s stock.
The company revealed a net loss of $834 million dollars for its third quarter, this is significant as it represents Nokia’s first loss-making quarter in a decade.
Sales fell 20 per cent and the company’s slice of the smartphone market fell from 41 percent to 35 percent, as it faces stiff competition from Apple’s iPhone and the round the corner threat from Google’s Android.

10/GUI interface looks to redefine the touch-enabled desktop
Redefining the way we interact with computers is a pretty ambitious task as far as things go, but that's just what R. Clayton Miller is looking to do with his so-called 10/GUI project, and he may just be onto something. Miller begins with the notion that the traditional mouse-based interface lacks the "interaction bandwidth" afforded by multitouch interfaces, and that touch-enabled desktops (or laptops) are inherently problematic since they can't be used for prolonged periods of time -- even a flat surface will do a number on your neck if you use it all day. To solve that problem, Miller proposes separating the touch surface from the display and placing it below the keyboard in the form of a large, hybrid capacative / resistive touch panel. Next iMac to use Core i7 after all?
A tentative rumor ad mid-day suggests that Apple's anticipated iMac redesign may draw on Intel's mobile Core i7 processors. Most other details aren't provided in the AppleInsider tip, but any release before early 2010 would require that Apple use some or all of the quad-core "Clarksfield" designs on the market and produce the first non-workstation quad-core Macs.

Trillian instant messaging app still waiting for approval
Cerulean Studios has complained that a new Trillian instant messaging app, for the iPhone and iPod touch, has yet to be approved. The app was submitted over 60 days ago according to the company, but at last check is still winding its way through Apple evaluation. A steady stream of e-mails is said to have been sent, but met only with generic form letters, giving no indication on whether changes are needed or how much longer the company may expect to wait.

It wasn't that long ago that a bathroom scale was the only gadget you needed to track weight loss. Today even videogame consoles, once the bane of the fitness industry, are trying to help you recycle that spare tire, and of course there's no shortage of specialty doo-dads getting in on the action. The Fitbit is one of those, a little accelerometer that pledges to keep an eye on what you do so that you can just go ahead and do it, reporting back at the end of the day on how well you did at staying active. The just announced Logitech G110 gaming keyboard is the followup to the G11 -- and it shows. Aesthetically, it's a bit tamer looking than the previous version. No AT&T iPhone tethering before 2010?
AT&T's planned tethering support for the iPhone might not arrive until 2010, a a statement from a carrier spokesman suggests. Nokia meldet Quartalsverlust von 559 Millionen Euro

Google to launch paid, universal e-book store
Google today set out official plans to launch its own paid e-book store. Known as Google Editions, the service will be one of the few truly universal stores and will work with any device that has a reasonably modern web browser, including most computers, smartphones and even normally locked-down devices like the Amazon Kindle. Nokia smartphone share falls on iPhone pressure
Nokia this morning revealed a chunk of lost smartphone marketshare, a $1.35 billion hit from its networks unit and more bad news generating an immediate sell-off of the company’s stock.
The company revealed a net loss of $834 million dollars for its third quarter, this is significant as it represents Nokia’s first loss-making quarter in a decade.
Sales fell 20 per cent and the company’s slice of the smartphone market fell from 41 percent to 35 percent, as it faces stiff competition from Apple’s iPhone and the round the corner threat from Google’s Android.

Speakers might be among the worst hardware to assess online. What do 36 watts of power output and a 40Hz to 20kHz response range tell you about the actual audio quality? ComScore: Bing gewinnt weiter Anteile am US-Suchmarkt

Nokia swings to $1.36 billion loss
Nokia on Thursday suffered one of its larger blows in recent years with word of especially poor results during its summer quarter. The company posted a net loss equivalent to $1.36 billion between July and September and almost completely reversed a $1.58 billion profit from a year earlier. Much of the blame was placed directly on a deep, 19.6 percent plunge in its revenue from phone sales compared to a year earlier, even though the number was a slight 5 per cent gain versus the spring.

After looking into the installation package, it seems that the extension IOAHCIFamily.kext has been updated. It is related to the software layer communicating with Advanced Host Controller Interface allowing control and management of functions and specificities of the SATA bus.
This update is not proposed automatically to all computer, indicating a hardware specific distribution. This could be a new hope for the owners of EFI 1.7-based MacBook Pro, even though we doubt it will fix it. As usual, the limited comment from Apple Support website does not really inform us about the bug being fixed:

We are now waiting for more than 10 days, expecting new Mac mini (and potenetially new iMac too) to be released. As we mentioned it earlier based on messages sent by Apple to resellers, the availability is limited and Apple is most likely working on emptying stocks. Nokia posts $834 million quarterly loss, smartphone share down to 35%
Nokia just posted a net loss of 559 million euro (834 million dollars) for the third quarter -- its first quarterly loss in a decade according to the AFP. The loss comes after a reported 20% drop in sales and 1.17 billion euros in write-downs, mostly for impairment charges on Nokia Siemens Networks. Nokia also said that its smartphone market share dropped to 35% versus 41% in the previous quarter. With fierce competition from Apple and RIM, and Palm just launching its Pre into Nokia's European stronghold, well, it's a good thing Nokia's branching out into untapped markets like single-core Atom-based netbooks.

BlackBerry Storm2 official, headed to Vodafone
RIM today at last released the BlackBerry Storm2, its second touchscreen phone. The new model has a sleeker design that centers on a much-improved 480x360 touchscreen; rather than slow down users by actually moving the screen inwards, it uses a piezoelectric system that replicates physical feedback but still allows two-finger input. iPhone in China: Verkaufsstart am 30. Oktober

Mit dem neu veröffentlichten Programm GarageSale Touch (3,99 Euro) lassen sich eBay-Auktionen direkt vom iPod touch oder dem iPhone aus erstellen. Die Anwendung bietet zehn verschiedene, vorgefertigte Auktionsdesigns und lässt sich in 16 eBay-Ländern (darunter natürlich auch Deutschland, Schweiz und Österreich) nutzen.

Angesichts der vielen iPhone-Apps ist es wenig verwunderlich, dass es hier und da zu kleineren Problemen bei der Überprüfung durch Apple kommen kann. TomTom Car Kit: Erster Praxistest
Seit ein paar Tagen lässt sich das TomTom Car Kit nun offiziell bestellen (wir haben berichtet) und wird offensichtlich bereits ausgeliefert. An sich sollte der Versand der Bestellungen ja erst Ende Oktober statt finden, einige Leser haben uns jedoch bereits über erhaltene Versandbenachrichtigungen informiert.
Bei YouTube gibt es bereits einen ersten, erfreulich umfassenden Praxistest aus England zu sehen (Danke Peter, das Video haben wir unten auch eingebettet). Unter anderem zeigt das Video, dass sich das TomTom-Kit auch in Kombination mit anderen Navi-Apps verwenden lässt.

PC-Markt: Acer überholt Dell im dritten Quartal
Acer hat im dritten Quartal 2009 einen Anteil von 14 Prozent am weltweiten PC-Markt erreicht, was einem Zuwachs von 2,6 Prozentpunkten gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres entspricht. Austausch-Akku für MacBook Pro 15" Unibody vergriffen
Das im Januar präsentierte MacBook Pro 17" verfügte über eine wesentliche Änderung: Der Akku lässt sich nicht mehr vom Kunden selbst auswechseln, hält aber laut Apple 1.000 Ladezyklen, was bei einer normalen Nutzung für ca. 5 Jahre reicht. Gartner: Android überholt iPhone bis 2012
Die Auguren bei Gartner sagen Apple zwar weiterhin starkes Wachstum mit dem iPhone voraus, sehen die Open Source-Konkurrenz Android der von Google angeführten Open Handset Alliance allerdings bereits in zwei Jahren am iPhone vorbeiziehen. Gartner prophezeit Symbian (Nokia) auch 2012 den ersten Platz bei Handys mit rund 39 Prozent Anteil am Weltmarkt (heute: 50 Prozent), Rang zwei (14,5 Prozent) würde sich wie gesagt Android erkämpfen, beachtliche 14 Prozent würden dem iPhone den dritten Patz sichern, gefolgt von Windows Mobile und BlackBerry mit jeweils etwas mehr als 12 Prozent. Heute liegt noch BlackBerry auf Rang 2, gefolgt von iPhone OS.

Performance Update fixes hard drive stalls in Snow Leopard
If you are in the "small number" of people who are seeing hard drive stalls since Snow Leopard and that Unibody MacBook Firmware update that allowed 3Gbs SATA, Apple finally has an answer - in the form of a "Performance Update 1.0." Though, it only affects a small number of users, anyone with a recent MacBook of any kind running Leopard or Snow Leopard should download this update.

AMD Has Plan for a Radeon HD 5900
Yesterday, AMD unveiled its SDK Open CL, only available for Linux and Windows. It is likely that the one dedicated to MAc OS X will be available when Apple will release MAc OS X 10.6.2 as it should massively improve drivers for Radeon. It is rather enjoyable to see both graphic card manufacturers to work hard and fixing problems on Open CL, a key feature of Snow Leopard. When looking into the new SDK, there are references to a Radeon HD 5900, so far unknown as officially the flagship model is the Radeon HD 5870. AMD is most likely waiting for NVIDIA to release its new models before unveiling a potentially even faster unit.
PS: During years, graphic cards dedicated to our Mac have always been one generation away, and Apple never considered that one could play games on a Mac. things will change with Open CL and Apple will have to invest more resources to of

Wi-Fi Direct will arrive in 2010
The Wi-Fi Aliance announced that it would start at the beginning of 2010 certification for an evolution of the Wi-Fi standard. This time it does not act to extend the range or the increase the data flow, but to re-examine and simplify connection between the various devices.
Currently, there are two ways to be connected:
A connection in Infrastructure mode via a Wi-Fi base station that will route the data between the various peripherals. Everything must be connected on him.
An 'Ad Hoc' connection makes it possible to connect two devices directly, without having to pass through a router. One uses primarily this type of connection for breakdown servicing or if one has two Wi-Fi peripherals.

Woz Does Not Entirely Believe in SSD
The well-known Steve Vozniak, now working for Fusion-IO, a company manufacturing high performance SSD PCI Express units, holds a strange position as scientific adviser. He gave his thoughts on the future of the storage market. As one would have expected, he thinks that PCI Express solution have many more advantages than SATA solutions, and the first one should become much more popular in a near future as their bus is much faster than the current SATA format now well consider as the bottleneck for SSD. Surprisingly, when talking about the future of storage, he does not think that SSD will completely overtake disk-based HD as they will keep holding a huge advantage in term of price/capacity over SSDs. Apple Facing Shortage of Supply for MacBook Pro 15'' Unibody Batteries
Apple informed its partner that it is facing a temporary shortage of supply for batteries dedicated to MacBook Pro 15", affecting all models except the last one with its non-removable unit. It is currently impossible for APR and/or repair center to order such unit to change a defective one. This shortage would be linked to some issue in production. Apple does not provide any date for getting status back to normal. The fact that it is tagged as "temporary" should indicate that the company expect to quickly resume availability.

Mac Pro to get exclusive on six-core, 32nm Xeons?
Apple may have a temporary exclusive on Intel's fastest workstation Xeons early next year, a purported leak argues tonight. An unnamed source says Apple is readying a Mac Pro based on the Xeon version of Intel's Gulftown six-core architecture and that the Mac builder would have a short exclusive for the processors, launching its own workstations in the winter while everyone else would have to wait until the spring. Motorola CLIQ review
Palm and Motorola have taken very different paths to get where they are today; one began life as a scrappy Valley start-up founded by a tablet computing pioneer, the other traces its roots to all the way back to the early days of consumer electronics and the automotive industry. Acer partially fulfills prophecy, overtakes Dell as number two PC maker in US
As if on cue, here's some new data research firm Gartner lending credence to Lanci's boasting. Looks like Acer has leapfrogged over Dell for the number tow spot in terms of US market share for the third quarter of 2009, from 12.5 to 15.4 percent of the Big Pie Chart[TM]. Appswell's looking for a few good app ideas
With the newly launched Appswell app, users can submit their own ideas for iPhone apps and vote on the ones they like. The developer will pick a winner based on user votes and build the app, with the person who suggested the idea getting $1,000 plus a 10 percent share of the profits.

iPhone MMS showing incorrect sender number? (poll)
It all started with an iPhone-borne MMS video of a Kirby plush toy that I tried to send. You see, I don't have a 510 number -- that AT&T mobile number belongs to a friendly gentleman living in Fremont, CA, about 40 miles from where I reside -- but that didn't stop the message from going through the airwaves with his number listed as sender. Confused? Yeah, so are we, and a quick look at the forums say we're not alone. We've contacted AT&T for more information, but in the meantime, let us know if you've noticed any similar problems.

Mac OS X update helps prevent hard-drive stalls
Apple on Wednesday released performance updates for both its Leopard and Snow Leopard operating systems. The downloads address intermittent stalls caused by hard drives, an issue reported by a a small number of users. The updates do not appear to include any other bug fixes.

HTC HD2 turns up in purported T-Mobile USA materials
We've already had some indication that HTC's take on Windows Mobile 6.5, the HD2, would be headed to T-Mobile UK, and heard straight from HTC itself that the phone would indeed be headed to the US in next year, but it looks like we may now have one more key piece of the puzzle. Future Mac Pro: Apple to Enjoy Short-Term Exclusive Use of Future Xeon CPU?
According to one of our sources, Apple is finalizing the future Mac Pro models. They are currently testing the last evolution of Xeon CPU, known as Gulftown, that Intel only demoed a couple of times so far.This Xeon is an evolution of those already powering Mac Pro 2009 with some new features:
6 cores and 12 threads for each CPU.
12 MB of shared cache instead of 8 MB today.
32-nm engraving vs. 45 nm today.

Dell founder attacks netbooks, Vista
Dell's namesake Michael Dell in a talk late Tuesday criticized both his own products and Microsoft. Despite his company offering multiple netbooks, including the Mini 10, the CEO largely dismissed the category and said a "fair amount" of buyers are unhappy with them for both their smaller screens and slow performance. Many existing notebook owners in particular often come back disappointed as they lose what they liked about their larger portables.
