Monster releases uprated Turbine Pro earphones
Monster Cable today upgraded its non-Beats in-ear headphones with the addition of the Turbine Pro. The new pair purportedly has "reference" level audio, although specifications aren't given, and have a new custom-designed ear tip design that should provide better insulation from the outside world than Monster's previous design. Avid intros Digidesign Eleven Rack
Avid has formally unveiled the Digidesign Eleven Rack, a new music processing unit. The hardware is aimed at guitarists, and simulates a number of different amps from the likes of Fender, Vox, Marshall and Soldano, as well as stompboxes by companies like Ibanez, Electro-Harmonix and Univox. Convolution-based cabinet and mic emulations are used, the latter simulating dynamic, condenser and ribbon designs.

UMID M2 hands-on at IDF
UMID's got a couple prototype M2s lying around IDF, and while they don't seem like the most stable or production-ready things in the world -- one of them booted straight to an all-white screen, while another had its logo stuck on by a doting booth attendant -- it's clear that this revision of the M1 will correct a few glaring flaws. Although Intel made some waves yesterday with the announcement of the smartphone-capable Moblin 2.1 release, the reality here on the ground at IDF is pretty much status quo: phones and other connected devices based on the next-gen Moorestown mobile platform are nowhere to be found, and the actual products on the floor are the same chunky MIDs we've all come to know and ignore. Fon ships Fonera 2.0n router Stateside
Fon today formally rolled out its once-teased Fonera 2.0n router. The new update adds 802.11n Wi-Fi speeds but is better known for adding built-in clients for several services independently of computers. Owners can upload content to Facebook, Flickr, Megaupload, Picasa, RapidShare and YouTube when the relevant computer is turned off; it can also download BitTorrents and send Twitter updates to signal when a transfer has been completed or a guest connects to the public hotspot.

SSD: Intel resets the clock at zero
With its range X25, Intel has for a long time been the reference in the world of SSD disks. Since then, many other manufacturers have also released powerful and cheaper products, which eat away at its leadership. AT&T slips some iPhone MMS rollout details for Friday
We've just heard from AT&T that new carrier settings for the iPhone 3G and 3GS will be available "late morning" Pacific Time (which would be early afternoon Eastern) this Friday, September 25, which will finally enable MMS support. Owners will have to tether up to iTunes to grab those settings, so fish out your cable (as if you don't have it permanently attached to your machine already) and make sure you've got some solid time in front of the computer to check for the update over and over (and over) again, alright?Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds

FASB greenlights key change in accounting rules
The Financial Accounting Standards Board has officially certified a change in GAAP accounting rules, one which could significantly influence Apple stocks, the Wall Street Journal writes. A draft measure of the change was completed earlier this month, after pressure from corporations including Apple, TiVo and Xerox. As a result, businesses selling hardware linked to subscription services should now be able to report earnings as they are produced, instead of over an extended period.

Microsoft accused of dodging $707m in taxes
Microsoft is being accused of finding a loophole that has thus far saved it from paying some $707 million in software licensing taxes, according to a blog entry from Seattle-based technologist and writer Jeff Reifman. The software giant is based in Redmond, Washington, but it records its software licensing revenue from an office in Reno, Nevada. Microsoft does this to save on taxes because of different laws in the two states, Reifman says, and so would have saved hundreds of millions of dollars over the past 13 years.

T-Mobile negotiating to expand 4G service, Catherine Zeta-Jones going door-to-door
Word is that Deutsche Telekom (the parent company of T-Mobile) is now actively engaged in talks with Clearwire and MetroPCS to expand its 4G network. This isn't terribly shocking to hear, considering that most other providers (including AT&T, Verizon and Sprint) are already either heavy into negotiations or in the process of upgrading their infrastructure. Report: AT&T "very nervous" as iPhone MMS launch approaches
AT&T is allegedly "very nervous" as the launch date for iPhone MMS quickly approaches, a source familiar with the carrier told DSL Reports. The company has requested hourly updates from their MMS aggregator partners, in an attempt to quickly discover delays or outages as the service goes live on Friday. Project coordinators expect approximately 40 percent higher traffic throughout the entire day.

FASB approves accounting changes that will allow Apple to realize revenue sooner
Call your broker! The FASB has changed its accounting rules allowing Apple to realize the revenue from its iPhones and AppleTV devices at purchase rather than slowly over two years. It also allows Apple to stop charging nominal fees for iPod Touch software updates - when it doesn't necessarily want to. AAPL is up almost 4 points on the day.

Intel Light Peak may give iPods 10Gbps sync
Intel used a presentation at IDF to unveil Light Peak, a new interconnect standard for PCs. As implied by the name, the technology uses fiber optics instead of wires to transfer data and consequently has much more bandwidth. Even in its first generation, it's expected to transfer at about 10 gigabits per second, or over 20 times faster than USB 2.0; it could transfer the entire contents of a typical Blu-ray disc in about 30 seconds if working at top speed, Intel claims.

Intel has 22nm in sight
The first INTEL processors engraved in 32 nm will start their commercial career at the end of the year, however the foundry is already looking ahead and proves it. During an IDF conference, they showed a wafer engraved in 22 nm that contained DRAM chips.
Once again, Intel wanted to prove its enormous technological advance compared to its competitors, who are at least a year behind with the processes of engraving chips.

Stitchtastic 1.0 converts images to cross-stitch patterns
Severn has released its latest application, Stitchtastic, used to design cross-stitch patterns. The program features a photo-to-pattern tool that can convert an image into a cross-stitch pattern, or users can alternatively digitally paint stitches onto a virtual canvas. News: China Unicom to launch iPhone on October 15?
China Unicom is internally targeting October 15 as its launch date for the iPhone in China, according to a China Business Times report (Translated Link). Intel formally reveals Core i7 for notebooks
Intel at its second Developer Forum keynote officially unveiled its first Core i7 processors for notebooks. Once codenamed Clarksfield, the quad-core processors share the same Nehalem architecture and 45 nanometer process as the desktop part but are designed to consume much less power, although more at peak than the Core 2 Quad. The top-end Core i7 Extreme consumes 55W where regular quad Core i7 mobile chips will use 45W.

USB 3.0 might be one of the big stories here at IDF, but Intel just showed off a glimpse of the future: Light Peak, an optical interconnect for mobile devices that can run as fast as 10Gbps. That's fast enough to do everything from storage to displays to networking, and it can maintain those speeds over 100-meter runs, which is pretty astounding. Die DENIC eG, Verwalterin der .DE-Domainhierarchie, hat die Abfrage von Domaininhabern (Holder) und Verwaltungsansprechpartnern (Admin-C) über Whois stark eingeschränkt. Eine direkte Abfrage des Servers whois.denic.de, beispielsweise über das Kommandozeilentool whois, liefert nur noch den technischen Ansprechpartner (Tech-C) und den DNS-Zonenverwalter (Zone-C). Bei von Privatpersonen und kleinen Firmen registrierten Domains liefern letztere meist einen Ansprechpartner beim Registrar oder beim Registration Service Provider.

WhoPaste 3.2 adds SMS e-mail control for existing contacts
Mac-Chi has released v3.2 of its flagship software, WhoPaste. The application lets users create contact records in a variety of data stores by copying text to the Clipboard, and then invoking a user-configured hotkey. The latest version allows users to select text and create a new contact using the context menu. It also provides optional phone formatting, storing phone numbers in a manner that can be dialed from within any country.

Intel announces quad-core Core i7 Extreme and Core i7 for laptops
As expected, Intel just announced its Clarksfield laptop chips, bringing Core i7 to the laptop form factor. There'll be two chips, a quad-core and a Core i7 Extreme that can run as fast as 3.2GHz in Turbo mode, which selectively shuts off cores and uses the extra power to speed up the the remaining cores while preserving battery life. Computer desktop moves around inside monitor?!?
OS X has a variety of features that help people navigate, view windows and other items, as well as aid people with visual and hearing disabilities. Some of these features are relatively obscure, and need to be researched to enable, but others are more easily enabled. One of these, which has puzzled new OS X users is when the desktop seems to be larger than the extents of the screen, regardless of the resolution being used. This results in the screen moving around with the movement of the mouse.

On mobile apps, Palm and Google show history repeats itself
It’s not just Apple and AT&T who have problems delivering the needs of mobile users, both Google and Palm have also let the ball slip in recent days.
Strike one: Google, which yesterday introduced real time “push” Gmail sync for the iPhone. Seems too many iPhone users wanted this feature, with Dan Frommer helpfully pointing out a deluge of frustrated user comments on Google’s blog pages and Twitter.

Palm overwhelmed with app submissions
Palm's decision to open development to everyone has left it facing more webOS app submissions than it can take, the company's Developer Community Manager Chuq Von Rospach admitted this week. Demand already building for Apple tablet?
Over a fifth of the public may be interested in buying Apple's rumored tablet device, says RBC Capital Markets' Mike Abramsky. The analyst notes that in a recent survey of 3,100 people, 21 percent expressed interest in buying the tablet, despite the lack of an announcement by Apple, or even a detailed set of rumored features. Codex and InkSeine -- the roots of Microsoft's Courier?
Yesterday, the cats over at Gizmodo got a look at what appeared to be a pretty groundbreaking product from Microsoft -- the Courier -- a dual-screen, multitouch tablet with an advanced UI the likes of which we've rarely seen. According to the site's report, the product was in "late prototype" stages, and judging from the video, it looked to be pretty far along (at least as far as software was concerned). Today, MobileTechWorld looks as though it might be shedding a little more light on the device and its software but it might not be quite what you think.

Apple Store walkout planned
ifoAppleStore is reporting that employees of a Seattle area Apple Store are planning a 1PM walkout on October 3rd. Alderwood Mall retail employees cite “abusive” management and possible state and federal labor law violations at the store. Apple wins, Palm in hot water over iTunes Pre sync
Apple wins, Palm takes a slap in the ongoing iTunes war between the two firms.
We all know the background, Palm introduced the Palm Pre, which the company equipped with the ability to sync with iTunes. Apple didn’t like it and prevented use of this within an iTunes update, Palm re-enabled its feature, Apple stopped it again and Palm took a complaint to the USB Forum, the body which polices such things.
Palm had accused Apple of improperly using its USB Vendor ID to block sync with iTunes. This view wasn’t shared by the USB Forum, where executive director, Traci Donnell, said: “In the view of the USB-IF, Palm’s allegation (if true) does not establish that Apple is using its Vendor ID (VID) contrary to USB-IF’s policies. Eminem’s litigious people make the news again, on reports that talks between the rapper’s ‘people’ and Apple legal are at a critical point, if both parties want to avoid a public spat in the US courts.
It’s a complex issue of music, distribution rights and music industry lawyers. Palm climbs on Nokia takeover chatter as iPhone market grows
Despite trouble with the USB Forum, Palm shares are climbing this morning on market chatter claiming mobile phone giant, Nokia, may plan a takeover of its smaller rival.
Reports from financial wires suggest the potential marriage may be predicated on two twin but different needs: Nokia want’s an Apple iPhone-class technology for its smartphones, while Palm needs financial clout to truly gain the chance to deliver on its own technological possibilities.
While neither company has been prepared to comment on these rumours, Palm stock climbed 10 per cent on early Nasdaq training (up $17.50) on chatter and claim.

2009 PC business better than hoped; Win 7 a non-factor
Computer sales will fare much better than feared but won't get any help from Windows 7, according to revamped estimates from Gartner. The analyst firm had recently predicted a 6 percent drop in shipments for all of 2009 but now believes the numbers will only drop 2 percent compared to 2008. Most of that, however, is attributed to an expected growth in holiday sales instead of any pent-up demand for Microsoft's new OS, which may actually worsen results as PC makers may put too much faith into the upgrade.

USB-IF rebukes Palm for iTunes workaround
By means of an official letter, the USB Implementers Forum has criticized Palm for using a workaround to sync the Pre with Apple's iTunes software. The letter is in response to an earlier complaint from Palm, which accuses Apple of violating its USB-IF membership agreement by deliberately blocking third-party devices through iTunes updates. Frankreich: Gesetz zu Internetsperren für Raubkopierer verabschiedet
In Frankreich haben jetzt sowohl der Senatals auch die Abgeordnetenkammer dem umstrittenen Gesetzentwurf zu Internetsperren für Raubkopierer zugestimmt. Die Regierung möchte das unter der Abkürzung "Hadopi" bekannt gewordene Gesetz jetzt so schnell wie möglich umsetzen. UK etailer confirms iPod touch with camera delayed...
Some disappointment greeted the announcement of the new high-capacity iPod touch, mainly because every tech pundit and every tech pundit’s brother had expected the new version to ship with its own built-in cameranow it’s pretty clear pre-launch reports claiming production problems with the new model were accurate.
Latest evidence comes from UK eTailer, Dabs.com, and a recent catalogue entry (now removed) which did plainly state the product carried a “built-in video recorder”.
This flyer was recently mailed to subscribers and still lists a "built-in video recorder" as a feature. Of course, clicking through reveals the same ol' iPod touch launched sans camera.

South Korea to allow iPhone, more
South Korea's Communications Commission on Wednesday cleared a path for Apple to legally sell the iPhone in the country. The organization said (subscription required) that it would waive a normal rule that requires domestic location software and instead let individual carriers obtain permission for Apple on its behalf. Zunächst sah es so aus, als würde die Beschwerde Palms vor dem USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) gegen Apple für Schwierigkeiten in Cupertino sorgen. US looking to deploy long-endurance hybrid airship over Afghanistan

Deutsche Telekom setzt beim Breitbandausbau verstärkt auf Kommunen
Die Deutsche Telekom will ihre Zusammenarbeit mit den Gemeinden deutlich verstärken, um die flächendeckende Versorgung mit schnellen Internetanschlüssen voranzutreiben. Nach eigenen Angaben hat der Bonner Konzern in diesem Jahr bereits 500 Kooperationsverträge mit Kommunen geschlossen - bis Jahresende sollen es 750 werden. Das wären fast doppelt so viele wie im Vorjahr.

Courier: Microsofts angeblicher Tablet-Prototyp (Video)
Microsoft soll angeblich an einem eigenen Tablet (oder eher Booklet) arbeiten, das mit zwei 7" Displays ausgerüstet sein könnte und sowohl für Multitouch-Gesten empfänglich ist wie auch eine Eingabe per Stylus erlaubt. Apple wins, Palm in hot water over iTunes Pre sync
Apple wins, Palm takes a slap in the ongoing iTunes war between the two firms.
We all know the background, Palm introduced the Palm Pre, which the company equipped with the ability to sync with iTunes. Apple didn’t like it and prevented use of this within an iTunes update, Palm re-enabled its feature, Apple stopped it again and Palm took a complaint to the USB Forum, the body which polices such things.
Palm had accused Apple of improperly using its USB Vendor ID to block sync with iTunes. This view wasn’t shared by the USB Forum, which said: “In the view of the USB-IF, Palm’s allegation (if true) does not establish that Apple is using its Vendor ID (VID) contrary to USB-IF’s policies,” said Traci Donnell, the forum’s executive director, in rendering her decision.

Neue Details zum Microsoft Tablet
Auch das Microsoft Tablet hat ein Anrecht auf Render-Grafiken, die vermutlich nicht viel mit dem fertigen Gerät gemeinsam haben. Mit dem Flip4Mac 2.3.0.11-Update versucht Microsoft uns automatisch Silverlight mit unter zu jubeln. Chinese mobile phone provider China Unicom is expected to begin selling the iPhone next month. Interestingly, it appears that suits at BB expect Nintendo to make an official announcement on the drop this Friday, yet retail stores won't begin selling at the discounted rate until Sunday. "Pod" trademark sparks battle between Apple and entrepreneur
Apple is currently involved in a legal dispute with an entrepreneur, Daniel Kokin, over the use of the term "Pod," according to Wired. The iPod maker has threatened legal action against a variety of other individuals and companies that choose product names it considers too close to the popular media players. Most submit to Apple and follow the cease-and-desist commands, but Kokin has decided to fight back.

Video: Intel's four-screen laptop prototype hands-on
Well, here's something you don't see every day: Intel's got a concept laptop here at IDF that features three OLED touchscreens below the 15-inch screen. In keeping with the hype of the moment, the primary idea is to run widgets and other passive apps on the little screens, but they're actually integrated with the main screen, so you can flick content up to view it full-size, and even use the mouse to interact with the widgets instead of your fingers. It's definitely cool, but it's also definitely a little odd in practice -- although Intel says they're talking to OEMs, things will have to be significantly refined before this can hit production. Garage Band brings new lessons from John Legend, Rush
Apple has added several new instructional lessons to its Garage Band software for musicians. We know, we know -- you're probably still waiting for the Apple tablet that'll never come, but how's about a prototype alternative from said outfit's arch enemy to tide you over? Gizmodo has just let slip details surrounding what was previously a top secret project deep within the lairs of Redmond, but it's said that the Courier booklet is now in the "late prototype" stage of development. We're told that the folding device could eventually ship with dual 7-inch displays, both of which support multitouch gestures and can also be controlled via a stylus. Picasa 3.5 adds facial recognition, Google Maps integration

Version 3.5 adds several new features, including facial recognition technology that is designed to automatically organize content based on the subjects in the pictures. Intel to demo Larrabee, Sandy Bridge tomorrow

Eminem lawsuit against Apple set to begin trial
Eminem's lawsuit against Apple and Aftermath Records, filed by the rapper's publisher Eight Mile Style, is set to begin trial on Thursday. Each party has yet to agree on a settlement since the proceedings were initiated in 2007. The dispute involves sales of Eminem tracks through iTunes, content which Eight Mile Style claims was not authorized for online distribution.
