Garmin, TomTom stock tanks due to Android, results
Shares of GPS device makers Garmin and TomTom plummeted today through a combination of their quarterly results and the launch of Google Maps Navigation. Following both low guidance for Garmin's next quarter as well as poor results from TomTom, shares for the two fell 16.4 percent and 20.8 percent respectively and remained low through the entire trading day after news of Google's free, turn-by-turn mapping service became public.

Apple sued over infringement of camera tech patents
A lawsuit filed by St. Clair Intellectual Property Consultants has targeted Apple for allegedly using camera technology protected by several patents. The four patents, each relating to digital camera systems, were originally issued to a company named Personal Computer Cameras, although St. Clair purchased the technology between 1995 and 2001.

Apple engineers making a flurry of China trips?
Apple engineers are scaling up the number of trips to China to prepare for new products, a rumor indicates this evening. Visits to the Asian manufacturing base are reported by SAI as accelerating and may even include trips during the holidays. The exact nature of the trips isn't mentioned other than that at least one system integration engineer has been one of those making the trips.

Netflix streaming purportedly hitting Nintendo's Wii next

Astak intros stand-alone Mole Internet camera
Astak has announced the release of a standalone computer camera, the Mole on Wednesday. The wireless Wi-Fi camera can upload videos to YouTube, detect motion and alert users via Twitter or e-mail, and let them see what it sees via an iPhone or web browser. Microsoft's MSN Direct service to shut down in 2012
Well, it's quite the day for any GPS-related announcement, but Microsoft has nonetheless made a fairly big one of its own, with it dropping word via a simple service announcement that it's killing off its MSN Direct live information service for navigation units (among other devices -- even the odd coffeemaker). Those relying on the FM-based service won't be left in the lurch just yet, however, as the shutdown won't occur until January 1st, 2012. Snow Leopard: iSight unavailable after updgrade?
Some users, after upgrading their Mac OS to Snow Leopard, have lost functionality with their iSight built-in camera. When checking "About This Mac" from the Mac OS X menu > More Info (or opening System Profiler), the iSight does not show up (USB > USB High-Speed Bus). Users are experiencing this issue on external iSight cameras as well.

Korg Nanokey controller repurposed into MIDI foot pedal
Korg's Nanokey MIDI controller is pretty awesome in its own right, but using it with your feet gets a little difficult under "normal" conditions. We can't say for certain why Marc Fischer decided to convert his perfectly good control board into a MIDI foot pedal, but frankly, that's beside the point. The point is he did it, and he did it with just a bit of ingenuity, some wooden blocks for risers and a bit of Plexiglas to cover up the missing keys. Moto Droid to get Times Square ad blitz?
A leak today has revealed that Verizon plans to drive home its ad campaign for the Motorola Droid with a major promo in Times Square. Likely timed with the Android phone's launch next week, Verizon is said to be taking over the NASDAQ and Reuters billboards with promos that let visitors temporarily take control of the signs by giving them voice commands, mimicking Android 2.0's feature. A mockup for BGR suggests visitors will call a phone number and enter a queue until the ads are ready.

Datel reportedly looking to 'remedy' Microsoft's lock-out of unauthorized memory units
This brouhaha isn't officially on just yet, but MaxConsole has what it says is a letter from Datel's UK distributors, which details the company's response to Microsoft's locking-out of unauthorized memory units in the upcoming (and currently previewed) Xbox 360 dashboard update. While it's a bit short on specifics, Datel reportedly says that it is "aware of the changes that are required to remedy this problem and will shortly release a solution in readiness for this potential update." No Touch, iPhone 2G compatibility coming for TomTom kit
The combination of the TomTom iPhone Car Kit and its corresponding navigation app will not be compatible with the iPod touch or original iPhone, officials from the company say. The Car Kit's product page strictly states that while it can hold all iPhones, the matching app is only compatible with the iPhone 3G and 3GS. Regardless, a spokesman earlier claimed that company had simply not made any "public announcements" regarding the possibility of support through a software update.

The Mac Mini is perfect for running a small server for either the home or a small business, and many people have used them for this very purpose, taking advantage of the OS X client's server capabilities in order to do so. Apple has recognized this with the recent release of the Mac Mini server version, which cheaply brings the features of OS X Server to home users. Houston newscaster dictates slide transitions, goes bowling with Wiimote
We're not sure who's winning the ratings war in Houston, but we're going to give the upper-hand to KHOU based on these shots alone. As you can clearly see in the image above (and the enlarged versions there in the gallery), this newscaster is wielding a Wiimote. It's hard to say if the news station actually has their slide transitions setup to change with a swing of the controller, or if weather map zooming is handled with something typically used for gaming, but one thing's for darn sure -- lightning rounds of Wii bowling during commercial breaks are definitely happening.

UK confirms plans to force alleged pirates offline
The UK government's business secretary, Lord Mandelson, has confirmed initial plans to cut off Internet service for those who persistently, illegally download files. The policy should take effect in the summer of 2011 but will allegedly be considered a "last resort" after three notifications. After two initial warnings with close monitoring over the space of a year, Internet users would be disconnected with three months' opportunity to appeal the decision.

Sony recalls 69,000 AC adapters due to shock hazard
Oh, Sony. You've been doing so well with not making things blow up lately. Even a seemingly minor fizzle turned out to be a false alarm. While it's not laptop batteries this time, it seems that Sony has run into a bit of trouble with some of the AC adapters used for its VAIO all-in-one desktops and docking stations. Citrix says it has opened up public beta entries for GoToMyPC for the Mac. Long a Windows-only service, Mac owners should now likewise be able to remotely access files, programs and network connections on a distant computer. iPhone's importance to Apple grows exponentially
Part of Apple's 10K released this morning was news that iPhone revenues moved from around 5.68% of Apple's total sales in 2008 to 18.48% in 2009, a 300% increase. That translates into a dollar increase from $1.6 billion in 2008 to $6.2 Billion in 2009.
Fortune fired up the old Excel graphing function to create the charts at the left. Notice the Purple iPhone slice of pie is growing at such a fast rate that the other pieces of pie (iPod and Mac) may not be larger in the coming years.

Ghostwire augmented reality game coming to your creepy motel room, DSi in 2010
Majesco's just announced an augmented reality game for the DSi, Ghostwire: Link to the Paranormal. While the Ghostwire title had been previously unveiled, Majesco has apparently just signed on to publish it. The game makes use of the DSi's camera and microphone so the player can hunt for ghosts in their surrounding, actual environment. Once the ghosts are detected, the player will have to track down objects to bribe them into peacefulness. Ghostwire is expected sometime in 2010, but until then, we'll just keep walking with our own ghosts.

Minox NV mini II makes night vision pocketable
There's certainly no shortage of portable night vision gear available for those that often find themselves out and about at night, but there's few quite as pocketable as Minox's new NV mini II scope, which (as you can see) is almost small enough to fit on your key ring. You'll still get 2x magnification despite that diminutive size, however, and a built-in infrared illuminator for "perfect vision" even in complete darkness. Still no word on a price, but this one should be available from all your usual night vision retailers by the end of the month, if it's not already.

Intel removes the download of the firmware for the SSD Postville
Intel has hurridly withdrawn the firmware put in line day before yesterday, intended for the SSD Postville that brought the management of the Trim and also a performances increase for the model 160 GB. Many people found that after this update their disk ceased to function. The difficulty seems to arise under Windows 7. After the update, the system while restarting detects a problem on the SSD and refuses to continue to launch out and is blocked.
Intel will have to race against the clock to isolate and regulate the problem as fast as possible.

Microsoft store PCs come without trialware
The Windows PCs at Microsoft's first retail stores are deliberately purged of the third-party apps they would normally carry, employees and eyewitnesses have confirmed. Product Advisor Jared Marino explains these systems, regardless of the brand, are considered Signature PCs and won't include any unnecessary third-party software. Companies promise GPS support for iPod touch
Third-party GPS support for the iPod touch is coming soon, an announcement claims. GeoLife says it has submitted a new version of Navmii to the App Store, which -- in tandem with a PosiMotion G-Fi router -- should allow a Touch to access turn-by-turn car navigation. The Touch lacks both the GPS and 3G receivers found in the iPhone, normally rendering it incapable of handling directions while driving.

iTunes Store: Van Helsing für nur 3,99€ kaufen
Derzeit ist der Film Van Helsing im iTunes Store für nur 3,99€ zu haben - als gekaufter Titel kann er dann auch auf ein iPhone/iPod übertragen werden oder mit dem Apple TV angeschaut werden.
Es lohnt sich bei diesem Preis auf alle Fälle, sich mal den Trailer anzusehen und über einen Kauf nachzudenken.

Apple to lose massive iPhone subsidies with Verizon?
Apple will lose its current "sweetheart" US carrier subsidy if and when it signs an iPhone deal with Verizon, says Brian Marshall of Broadpoint.AmTech. Google details Maps Navigation for Android
Google today provided added details of the turn-by-turn mapping service found on the Motorola Droid. Google Maps Navigation adds many of the features that would normally exist in a dedicated GPS unit, such as a bird's-eye view and spoken directions, but takes advantage of Google's existing Maps features. Traffic is free in those areas where Google provides service, and Street View can show directions overlaid on top of in-location photos.

Intel fails to satisfy Apple
We know that Intel has made a large effort to please Apple with their offers of temporary exclusivenesses of various processors and also of the made-to-measure processors such as that which equips Apple TV, with the derivations from it used to produce the ATOM range. They have however failed with this latest. Apple would have been ready to use Intel processors in its products (probably Tablet Mac) if Intel had succeeded in lowering by a factor 10 the power consumption during sleep. Other manufacturers such as NVidia with his Tegra have done much better but Intel is not there yet.It becomes increasingly probable that the processor of the new Apple tablet is not "Intel Inside" but something else, either a NVidia processor, or more probably a product developed by Apple for its own use and derived from the ARM structure.

TomTom setzt Aufwärtstrend fort
TomTom hat seinen Nettogewinn im dritten Quartal 2009 erneut steigern können. Unterm Strich steht ein Plus von 31 Millionen Euro oder 0,14 Euro pro Aktie, nach 20 Millionen Euro oder 0,13 Euro pro Aktie im zweiten Quartal und 39 Millionen Euro Verlust im ersten Vierteljahr. Im Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahrs hatte der niederländische Navigationsgerätehersteller allerdings noch eine Nettogewinn von 58 Millionen Euro oder 0,36 Euro je Wertpapier erwirtschaftet.

Of Vietnamese origin, we do believe that this is the first GSM version of the phone we've caught on tape. Apple has flatly rejected Intel's Moorestown Atom platform for being too power-hungry, a rumor claims today. Unnamed industry contacts say Intel reportedly approached Apple on its own to suggest the ultra-mobile platform but that the Mac creator rejected it outright due to power concerns. According to the Fudzilla source, Apple needed idle power consumption about ten times lower than what Moorestown can manage.

Wie viele Tetris-Abwandlungen haben wir hier eigentlich schon gesehen? Die einfachen geometrischen Formen von unser aller Lieblingsspiel lassen sich nun mal besonders gut verbraten, so wie ja auch dieser quietschbunte Tetris-Sessel mit seinen skulpturalen Qualitäten durchaus was her macht. Die Würfel sind aus Fiberglas und entsprechend leicht und belastbar. Ob das Werk des mexikanischen Industriedesigners Gabriel Cañas irgendwann mal in den Läden stehen wird, wissen wir leider nicht. An Liebhaber der originalen Schwarz-Weiss-Version wurde übrigens auch gedacht, wie in der Galerie unten zu sehen ist.

Google Navigation coming to the iPhone Maps.app?
Google today introduced a new (kind of amazing) Navigation app for Android 2.0. This application is only avaialble at the moment as a beta for the Droid phone on Verizon but Google is apparently working with Apple on bringing it to the iPhone.
Accordding to CNET it isn't just the iPhone,
Google isn't ruling out licensing the software to makers of portable navigation devices used in cars throughout the world, said Gundotra, vice president of engineering at Google for mobile and developers. The process involving Apple is slightly different from the usual App Store submission process, because Maps is a built-in iPhone application, he said.

Verfassungsgericht lehnt Beschwerde gegen Privatkopie ab
Das Bundesverfassungsgericht hat eine Verfassungsbeschwerde der Musikindustrie gegen die Zulässigkeit privater Digitalkopien aus formalen Gründen abgelehnt. Weltrekord. Samsung baut ein 40"-LED-Display, das nur 3,9mm ist. Dazu kommt ein 120Hz refresh und ein Kontrastverhältnis von 5000:1. Wir gratulieren und sind auf die Replique von LG gespannt, die mit 5,9mm bislang die Nase vorn hatten. Und, ganz unter uns, die ersten Fernseher, in denen diese Displays hier verbaut werden, die können wir kaum erwarten.

Kohjinsha-Netbook PA kommt nächsten Monat in Japan auf den Markt, kostet definitv zu viel

Kohjinsha hat mit dem PA zwar die perfekte Mischung aus MID und Netbook am Start, die Idee aber, als Preis einfach beide Komponenten zusammenzufassen, halten wir für keine gute Idee. Anfang November geht es in Japan los. Für runde 500 Euro. Dafür bekommt man eine 1,33GHZ-Atom-Prozessor, eine 4,8"-Touchscreen mit 1024x600p und eine Fisseltastatur. WIr wünschen dennoch Glück.

Wo wir's gerade von Gerüchte-Gier hatten: Ein Eintrag in der Entwicklerversion des noch unveröffentlichten OSX-Updates 10.6.2 deutet darauf hin, dass Apple schon bald mit aktualisierten MacBook Pros rausrücken will. Mit denen wäre dann Schluss mit Intels Core 2 Duos, die moderneren Core i7 und i5 CPUs wären dann an der Reihe - Intels neusten Mobile-Prozessoren. [via Crunchgear]

Von 3,25 Zoll auf 4 Zoll: Nintendo DSi bekommt größere Displays

Die japanische Zeitung Nikkei hat berichtet, dass zumindest in Japan Nintendos DSi noch dieses Jahr größere Displays bekommt. Die Displaygröße wird von 3,25 auf 4 Zoll vergrössert, die DSi aber weiterhin zum gleichen Preis verkauft. Wann auch der Rest der Welt in den Genuß von DSis mit größeren Displays kommt, ist noch unklar.[via Joystiq]

Der vierbeinige Roboter-Gepäckträger BigDog bekommt einen größeren Bruder: PETMAN wurde von der Firma Boston Dynamics entwickelt, um für die US-Army gegen chemische Kampfstoffe eingesetzte Schutzkleidung zu testen. PETMAN geht wie ein Mensch, mit ein bisschen viel Hohlkreuz zwar, aber er kann wunderbar von der Ferse her abrollen. Pentax K-x sammelt Punkte

Die DLSR K-x von Pentax ist bisher vor allem durch ihre Bubblegum-Ästhetik aufgefallen. Im Test von Tech Radar geht es nun mehr um Können als um Äusserlichkeiten, wobei die Kamera wohl ganz gut abgeschnitten hat. Die Bildqualität ist fantastisch, und darauf kommt es ja letztlich an. Verarbeitung und Ergonomie fallen ebenfalls positiv auf, auch wenn die Nikon D5000 bequemer in der Handhabung sein soll. Oktober ein neues Notebook in die Märkte: Das Medion Akoya S5612 punktet vor allem durch ein großes Widescreen-Display (1366x768, 15,6 Zoll), eine ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4530, 4 Gigabyte Arbeitsspeicher und Intels stromsparendem SU4100-Prozessor: Das Akoya S5612 verbraucht bei voller Last angeblich maximal 11 Watt - und wird dadurch auch nicht zu heiß. Der neue iMac und Apples Mini DisplayPort auf-DVI-Adapter stehen auf Kriegsfuß

Wer mit dem Mini DisplayPort auf-DVI-Adapter eine Gamekonsole oder irgendein anderes Gerät an seinen brandneuen 27-Zoll-iMac anschließen möchte, hat Pech gehabt. Momentan lässt sich der iMac als Standalone-Monitor nur zusammen mit Geräten benutzen, die mit einem eigenen Mini DisplayPort ausgerüstet sind. Ein funktionierender Adapter wird aber bestimmt nicht lange auf sich warten lassen - sei er nun von Apple selbst oder von einem anderen Hersteller.

Audi rast und VW parkt: Stanford baut Roboterautos
Filed under: AutosDie Universität Stanford will offensichtlich ein paar Rekorde im Gebiet der fahrerlosen Autos brechen: ihr Audi TTS hält den "inoffiziellen" Geschwindigkeitsrekord von knapp 210 kmh, ausserdem wollen ihn die Forscher den Pikes Peak International Hill Climb hochjagen - ein Bergrennen in Colorado, bei dem auf einer Strecke von knapp zwanzig Kilometern 156 Kurven genommen werden müssen. Für einen Ausgleich im Adrenalinhaushalt sorgt das VW Passat-Projekt aus Stanford, welches fahrerloses Einparken zum Ziel hat. Piloten vergessen zu fliegen

In den US ist ein Flugzeug (Northwest Flight 188 auf dem Weg von San Diego nach Minneapolis) knapp 250km von Kurs abgekommen, weil die Piloten mit ihren privaten Laptops beschäftigt waren und dabei eine offensichtlich äusserst angeregte Diskussion über Flugpläne geführt haben. Klingt schon ein wenig nach fauler Ausrede - WiFi soll es auf dem Flug allerdings nicht gegeben haben. MSI bringt Tegra-basierten E-Book Reader Anfang 2010

Gibt es eigentlich etwas was der Tegra nicht kann? Er ist das Herz des Zune HD, außerdem soll er in der nächsten Generation Smartbooks drin sein, MIDs, Media Pads und sogar die Nintendo DSi betreiben. MSI-Chef Joseph Hsu hat nun einen Tegra-basierten E-Book Reader für Anfang 2010 angekündigt, ohne weitere Details zu nennen. Für einen einfachen E-Book Reader ist der Tegra von NVIDIA allerdings überdimensioniert, deswegen dürfen wir durchaus ein bisschen mehr erwarten als schlichte E-Ink - Darstellung

Einige Bibliotheken in Großbritannien bieten neuerdings im Kampf gegen rückläufige Mitgliederzahlen auch E-Books an. Die Vorteile liegen auf der Hand: der Weg zur Bibliothek entfällt, da die Bücher bequem von zuhause aus auf diverse Lesegeräte wie den Sony Reader oder den B&N Nook runtergeladen werden können (während das proprietäre Kindle-Format leider aussen vor bleiben muss). Ausserdem erledigt sich das leidige Problem mit den Rückgabefristen von selbst, weil das E-Book nach vierzehn Tagen Ausleihe automatisch gelöscht wird. Klingt gut!

Yamaha EC-f: E-Moped im XBox-Design

Vor allem die weiss-giftgrüne Variante dieses E-Moped-Konzepts von Yamaha namens EC-f hat was extrem XBox-artiges. Viel wissen wir noch nicht über die technischen Daten, obwohl die auf der Tokyo Motor Show gezeigten Teile eigentlich schon ziemlich nach Serienmodell aussehen: 0,6 kW (knapp unter einem PS), wahrscheinlich so um die 50 km/h schnell, das wars aber schon mit den harten Fakten. Pascal Brisset hat aus einem Gumstix Overo Fire Modul mit 3D-fähigem OMAP Prozessor auf dem Linux läuft und einem Vuzix VR920 mit dreiachsigem Accelerometer und Kompass einen Wearable Computer geschaffen, der auf die Nase passt und von den Bauteilen her unter 1000 Dollar (ca. 670 Euro) kosten soll. Bridgestone präsentiert zwei ehrgeizige, farbige E-Reader-Prototypen

Die japanische Firma Bridgetstone ist vor allem für Reifen bekannt, entwickelt aber seit 2002 auch E-Papers. In einer japanischen Pressemitteilung hat das Unternehmen nun zwei rekordverdächtige E-Reader vorgestellt. Der Bildschirm des größeren Geräts hat mit 13,1-Zoll A4-Format und nimmt damit laut Hersteller eine Spitzenposition ein. Geblättert wird in nur 0,8 Sekunden, es werden 4,096 Farben dargestellt, zudem können Notizen mit einem Stift eingegeben werden. Das kleinere der beiden Geräte verfügt über einen 10,7-Zoll großen Touchscreen und ist als "weltweit erstes vollständig flexibel".

jkkmobile hat sich auch den französischen MID Archos 5 vorgeknöpft und erstmal in aller Ruhe ausgepackt. Das Kurzfazit nach ein paar Minuten Browsen: man kann schnell surfen, das Teil ist angenehm leicht und handlich, aber mit der alten Firmware klappt YouTube noch gar nicht und der Browser stürzt gern ab. Engadget US hat einen HP Pavilion dv3 in die Finger bekommen, welcher mit Windows 7 und Multitouch sowohl auf dem Bildschirm als auch auf dem Trackpad ausgestattet ist. Ihr Urteil: Angenehme Tastatur, das glossy Trackpad hingegen ist weniger toll, obwohl es auf die Multitouch-Gesten besser reagiert als der kapazitive Bildschirm. Am meisten Probleme verursachten aber die Versuche, Bilder auf dem Screen zu rotieren. Für eingefleischte Liebhaber mechanischer Uhren zählen vor allem die inneren Werte, gut verpackt hinter silbernen und goldenen Deckeln. Alen Parekhs Uhr besteht zwar ausschliesslich aus inneren Werten - aber mit der Lupe braucht man danach nicht zu suchen. Für uns Laien spielt das keine Rolle, wir würden uns dieses erfreuliche Mischmasch unterschiedlicher Zahnräder, das ganz ohne Zifferblatt und Zeiger auskommt, auch so gerne in die gute Stube hängen. Samsung stellt 30-Zoll großes 3D-AMOLED-TV vor

Nur 2,5mm dick ist der neue 30-Zoll große AMOLED-3D-Fernseher, den Samsung heute in Japan vorgestellt hat. Die Pressemitteilung ist leider in Koreanisch geschrieben, aber irgendwie soll das Panel selbst und die Shutterbrillen-Technologie, bei der abwechselnd und in hoher Geschwindigkeit das linke und das rechte Glas undurchlässig werden, dafür sorgen, dass die von manchen 3D-Nutzern empfundenen Schwindelgefühle reduziert werden. Vorsicht, Wanze: US-Behörde warnt Blackberry-User vor Exploit PhoneScoop

Die BlackBerries galten bisher als ziemlich sicher, mal abgesehen von Lücken im PDF-Distiller des Attachment Severs. Nun warnt das US-CERT vor einem Exploit, der BlackBerries in Wanzen verwandelt. Mit einer vorher definierten Nummer lässt sich mit einem Anruf das Lauthören ohne Wissen des Besitzers aktivieren, um Gespräche oder das im Raum Gesagte mitzuhören. Die Software namens PhoneScoop ist frei erhältlich und wurde vom Entwickler Sheran Gunasekera in Java programmiert, der damit auf Sicherheitslücken aufmerksam machen will. Der Gewinner der World Solar Challenge ist Japaner, sieht aber aus wie ein Marsianer

Diese schnittige UFO-Flunder hat die World Solar Challenge gewonnen, eine der beiden Kategorien der Global Green Challenge. Die als besonders hart geltende Rennstrecke für Solarautos führt 3000 Kilometer quer durch das sonnige Australien. Der diesjährige Sieger "Tokai Challenger", entwickelt von einem Team der japanischen Tokai-Universität, fuhr mit einer Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit von mehr als 100 kmh und erreichte das Ziel in Adelaide nach 29 Stunden und 49 Minuten. Analysten sehen Erholung für Halbleitermarkt im vierten Quartal
Die Analysten von iSuppli rechnen damit, dass sich der weltweite Halbleitermarkt im vierten Quartal erholt. Für die Monate Oktober bis Dezember erwarten sie einen Umsatzzuwachs um 10,6 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr. Still using that heap from 1999 that shipped sans a multicard reader? We know, it's tough. As does Elecom, who has just pumped out a foursome of new flash card readers for those less fortunate among us. The token one, however, is the sticky guy pictured above, which can actually be mounted on one's wall or desk side in order to maintain your precious desk space up top. Apple has published an official 10-K statement for its 2009 fiscal year, revealing some broader trends. The company for instance sold 54 million iPods, 1 percent less than in 2008; the result was more damaging in financial terms, bringing in 12 percent less revenue at $8.091 billion. Lower selling prices are said to be blame, as each iPod is estimated to have brought in an average of $149, as compared to $167 in 2008.

Google adds free turn-by-turn navigation, car dock UI to Android 2.0 (video)
Those nat service providers' fears were actually quite justified. Google today unveiled Maps Navigation (beta, of course), an extremely upgraded version of its current Maps software that'll be free and, from what we understand, available by default on all Android 2.0 devices. All the usual Maps features are present, including the ability to search by name of business and have it suggest the closest matches, both semantically and geographically, and traffic data. We're also now looking at turn-by-turn navigation, female robotic voice and all, and integration with satellite and street view, the latter of which will be able to show you what lane you need to be in when exiting the highway, for example. Magic Mouse software now available, Magic Mouse still not shipping...yet
Apple's new wireless Magic Mouse comes with all new iMacs. Unfortunately, you can't quite get them as standalone products yet. That's didn't stop Apple from releasing the software that will allow your Mac to use these new mice.
Come to think of it, since Apple is releasing this software now, there is a pretty good chance we'll see it in stores soon. You can still pre-order from Amazon for a buck off of Apple's price and free delivery.

Disney makes iPhone augmented reality move
Walt Disney Co is getting involved in the iPhone, promising a bunch of free iPhone and iPod touch applications, giving fans access to Disney content - with some interesting interactive features.
The free app offers bonus animations to users who follow clues to take pictures of characters from movies such as ``Up,'' ''G-Force,`` ''Ratatouille,`` and ''Wall-E`` on the site.
Taking the correct picture unlocks exclusive video and downloadable content such as frame images that can be overlaid on photos, or wallpaper images for. Disney is calling the feature ``Click2Life,'' because it makes characters captured in photos appear to suddenly become animated in one's hand.

Apple will defend itself "vigorously" against Nokia's billion dollar iPhone patent claims
The dispute between Apple and Nokia regarding patents claimed by the latter company to have been used without permission within the iPhone seems set to continue for “over a year” analysts say.
In its form 10Q filed last night, Apple responded that it will defend itself against Nokia’s patent lawsuit “vigorously”.
At issue: Nokia claims ownership of ten patented technologies applied within the iPhone, and insists Apple hasn’t paid the relevant royalties for these uses. Patents include those for wireless data transfer, speech coding, security and encryption.

Apple's 10K reveals higher R&D, more key suppliers, warns of lower margins
Apple published its latest 10K financial statement through the SEC late yesterday afternoon, confirming a decline in iPod sales, an apps-driven increase in iTunes revenues, and many more fascinating tidbits from behind Cupertino’s secrecy wall.
The company achieved 54 million iPod sales (down one percent) during its last financial year, accuring $8.091 billion (down 12 percent). As you can see, revenue fell more than unit sales, reflecting lower selling prices, though shored up by the slightly pricier iPod touch devices.

VIZIO brings the LED party to 19- and 23-inch models
Unless you've been under a rock for a hot minute, then you know that LED backlit LCD HDTVs have been all the rage, though so far no one has brought those benefits to the smaller TVs. Well today VIZIO added a 19-inch and a 23-inch model to its LED lineup. Only the 23-inch is 1080p, but both have very thin profiles and the improved contrast and color you'd expect. The interesting twist is that both models will work as a picture frame, which someone (as in, literally one person in some random corner of the globe) might appreciate. The 19-inch model retails for $349, and the 23-inch will set you back another $50, but there's no word on when you can expect these to show up on a store shelf near you. SAP kämpft weiter mit schwierigem Marktumfeld
SAP hat vorläufige Ergebnisse für das dritte Quartal 2009 veröffentlicht. Obwohl besonders die Umsätze mit neuen Lizenzen stark zurückgingen, konnte die operative Marge gesteigert werden. Das Gesamtergebnis fällt passabel aus. SAP-Finanzvorstand Werner Brandt führt das auf "konsequentes Kostenmanagement" zurück. Grund für die schwachen Zahlen bei Software- und softwarebezogenen Serviceerlösen sei in erster Linie die schwierige Situation in den Schwellenländern und Japan. Brandt sieht aber auch Zeichen einer Stabilisierung des gesamtwirtschaftlichen Umfelds.

Fast jedes 3. Smartphone ist von Apple
Folgt man einer vielzitierten Studie der Marktforscher von ChangeWave Research, dann macht Apple weiter Boden und Anteile im Smartphone-Markt gut. 30 Prozent aller Smartphones weltweit sind danach von Apple. Marktführer ist zwar noch RIM mit 40 Prozent, doch mit fallender Tendenz: Während RIM seit Januar 2008 drei Prozent verlor, konnte Apple um 24 Prozent zulegen. Palm verlor im gleichen Zeitraum 11 Prozent und rangiert jetzt bei sieben Prozent.
Da passt es gut ins Bild, dass der App Counter von AppShopper heute die Hürde von 100.000 genehmigter Apps genommen hat. Das Directory Apptism liegt mit knapp 97.100 nicht wesentlich darunter

Walt Disney Co is getting involved in the iPhone, promising a bunch of free iPhone and iPod touch applications, giving fans access to Disney content - with some interesting interactive features.
The free app offers bonus animations to users who follow clues to take pictures of characters from movies such as ``Up,'' ''G-Force,`` ''Ratatouille,`` and ''Wall-E`` on the site.
Taking the correct picture unlocks exclusive video and downloadable content such as frame images that can be overlaid on photos, or wallpaper images for. Disney is calling the feature ``Click2Life,'' because it makes characters captured in photos appear to suddenly become animated in one's hand.

Intel zieht Firmware-Update für Solid State Drives zurück
Intel hat ein gestern veröffentlichtes Firmware-Update für seine 34-Nanometer-SSDs vom Typ X25-M zurückgezogen. Apple: Produktpalette fürs Weihnachtsgeschäft steht
"The holiday lineup is set". Apple hat gegenüber der US-Webseite Gizmodo bestätigt, dass die Produktpalette für das diesjährige Weihnachtsgeschäft komplett sei.
Beste Zeit also, einen Mac zu kaufen. Die eben neu vorgestellten iMacs und MacBooks sollten allerdings sowieso erstmal wieder für ein Weilchen aktuell bleiben. Immerhin kann man nun aber auch davon ausgehen, dass vor Januar keine neuen Pro-Notebooks mehr erscheinen.
Die iPod-Palette präsentiert sich ja bereits seit September in neuem Glanz. Bei Shuffle und Nano gilt als sicher, dass der gewohnte Turnus beibehalten, und es vor September 2010 keine wesentlichen Änderungen gibt. Einzig und allein beim iPod touch halten wir es für nicht ausgeschlossen, dass vor Ablauf dieser Jahresfrist per Hardware-Update die

Mozilla hat Firefox auf die Version 3.5.4 aktualisiert. Das Update schließt 16 Sicherheitslücken, wovon das Unternehmen elf als kritisch, drei als moderat und zwei als gering eingestuft hat. The US investigates the prices of optical readers
The American Authorities concerning competition have just launched a large investigation aimed at Hitachi, Toshiba and Sony via its Optiarc division (held jointly with NEC). They seek to assemble evidence needed to prove that these companies cooperated in an illegal way in order to fix the prices of the optical products, readers and burners.
In actual fact, after a large drop in price, the prices of DVD burners, readers and Blu-ray burners stabilized while at the same time the world broke down around them. If the antitrust authorities launch a large scale investigation, it indicates that they have already the beginnings of evidence. The accused companies thus await heavy sentences as has already been the case for other computer related components such as LCD screens.

NVIDIA Bets on ATOM While Waiting for the Nehalem
NVIDIA is in a particularly difficult situation. Its GPU are currently behind corresponding models from ATI/AMD RAdeon, its Fermi GPU will not be ready before the end of the year, and Intel refuses to give NVIDIA a license to develop compatible chipset for its Nehalem. On the other side, the GeForce 9400M has been a huge success from end of 2008, massively adopted by Apple and many other Pc manufacturers. However, the GF 9400M will also disappear with the end of the Core 2 Duo CPUs, early 2010 when Intel will massively release mobile Core i5 and i7 CPUs.As the company can not find a short term solution, NVIDIA decided to bet on ATOM. They will release by the end of the year a new version of its ION platform, offering even more power and performance for ATOM-based hardware. They will of course have to fight with Intel and the founder is offering all kind of advantages to manufacturers if they choose the ATOM CPU AND its Intel motherboard/chipset instead of the more powerful NVIDIA ION solution.

Within one single year, the so far unknown company Indilix, specialized in SSD controller, became famous and among high-Tech star icons. Its current and last controller, the Barefoot, is the reference in the field and several manufacturers are using it in various SSDs. It offers more than 200 MB/S in reading and writing modes. Supply chain hints 20% climb in Q1 FY2010 iPhone 3GS sales
Fresh from helping create a shortage of flash memory components, Apple seems set to create yet another shortage, this time reducing one supplier’s stock of image sensors, as used in the iPhone and iPod nano cameras.

Another day, another Apple media-related tablet rumour, and this time the leak’s coming from way down under, Australia. That’s where the Sydney Morning Herald has reportedly been chatting with high level media people as it ties deals together to present Slate as the world’s best eBook reader.
Apple’s talking with media execs to firm up deals to get their content available to the device, tipped to be a larger version of the iPhone that’s small enough for a handbag but won’t fit your pocket.

Gizmodo got some mixed signals for Apple Marketing EVP Phil Shiller today. They first heard Schiller say, "There are not going to be any new Apple products this year" which they then posted including the bit:

Plex update brings Snow Leopard optimizations, bug fixes
The Mac OS X media software Plex has been updated with several Snow Leopard optimizations and bug fixes. Version 0.8.3 now works with 5.1-channel audio, a feature that had proven problematic with Apple's latest operating system. The developers have also addressed an issue with low volume when listening to downmixed 5.1-channel audio. Custom settings now allow for three different levels of dynamic range compression for AC3 and DTS audio.

Intel Wants to Further Increase the Market for its ATOM
While the ATOM has been the driving force for Intel to cross the economic slow-down, the company still has high expectation for this CPU and might even further increase its market share by cutting prices. New models will be released to open up new opportunities:
Dual core ATOM D510 associated with the Chipset NM10, including a graphical engine, will be dedicated to the Nettop market for hardware models featuring 160 GB of storage space and 1 GB of RAM. The maximum price recommended by Intel should be 299 USD.
The ATOM N450 will have only one core but will include a graphical chipset. It will be dedicated to the still growing market of netbook with price ranging from 249 to 299 USD. As Intel defines specifications of such notebook, manufacturers will have to offer display with max 10.2", 1 GB of RAM and 120 GB HD or 20 GB SSD.

HP Pavilion dv3 with multitouch screen spotted in the wild, we go hands-on
Our curious British fingers managed to stumble upon a European HP Pavilion dv3 blessed with Windows 7 and multitouch on both the screen and the trackpad. The keyboard was great to type on with negligible flex, but the trackpad suffers from the same glossy issues on other recent HPs -- although it responded to our multitouch gestures better than the capacitive screen did.
