VholdR launches helmet cam with 1080p
Action sports cam maker VholdR on Tuesday revamped its ContourHD helmet camera with its first major upgrade. The new variant of the ruggedized unit jumps from 720p to 1080p and now shoots in more modes, such as at 4:3 ratio 960p or at 60 frames per second in 720p. A particularly wide-angle, 135-degree lens gives it a better view of the environment, and dual sighting lasers help owners compose the shot.

NVIDIA releases CUDA Fortran compiler in beta form
NVIDIA has announced that a public beta release of the PGI CUDA-enabled Fortran compiler is now available for download. The compiler was developed by NVIDIA and the Portland Group, and is billed as the first Fortran compiler that works with CUDA-enabled GPUs. The compiler translates the Fortran programming language into binary code that CUDA GPUs can interpret.

Apple Tablet: Gerüchte um Ankündigung im Januar
Kaum sind die Gerüchte um einen Tablet-PC mit Apple-Logo ein wenig abgeflaut, legen unsere Kollegen von der iLounge wieder kräftig Kohlen nach. Die folgenden Informationen stammen aus der selben Quelle wie die zuverlässigen Vorabinfos zum iPod nano 5G oder dem iPhone 3GS, die die US-Webseite weit im Voraus veröffentlichte.
Der Tablet-Computer soll demnach bis zum 19. Januar 2010 vorgestellt werden fünf bis sechs Monate später erhältlich sein. Apple habe mindestens drei Prototypen getestet, die erste Version mit 7" Bildschirmdiagonale wurde als zu klein befunden, der aktuelle Prototyp sei mit einem 10,7" Bildschirm ausgestattet.
Als Betriebssystem soll das iPhone OS eingesetzt werden und es soll eine Version mit 3G-Internet und eine ohne geben. Optisch erinnern die Geräte wohl stark an ein vergrößertes iPhone 3GS bzw. einen iPod touch.

MS competitors complain about EU decision
A number of software developers that make competitors to Microsoft's to Microsoft's Internet Explorer have complained about the recent settlement with the EU that would allow Microsoft to give users the option to install another web browser. According to a Monday WSJ report (subscription required), the complaints came via a questionnaire EU officials sent out to Microsoft's competition, urging them for comment on the settlement idea.

Akamai launches network for widescale HD, iPhone streaming
Akamai on Tuesday announced it will soon launch the Akamai HD Network that will be capable of delivering HD video to hundreds of thousands of people using Adobe Flash, Microsoft Silverlight and, eventually, the iPhone. The Akamai HD Network will support both live and on-demand streaming. It will run on Adamai's global EdgePlatform network platform composed of over 50,000 servers, allowing content providers with a reach to some 70 countries.

Spätestens mit dem eilig von TomTom verfassten Presse-Statement war es abzusehen, jetzt ist es so weit: Apple storniert zur Stunde die Frühbestellungen des TomTom Car-Kits.

Windows 7 OEM pricing revealed by Newegg

Belkin on Tuesday announced the release of its Conserve Surge with Timer power bar, which has a built-in timer to eliminate power draw when an office workstation is not in use. The power bar is meant for but not limited to use in offices, where IT energy costs are unnecessarily high due to the phantom power draw from turned off devices or computers in standby mode. Canon backs out of PMA 2010
Canon today confirmed recent rumors and said it had chosen not to have a presence at the 2010 PMA (Photo Marketing Association) trade show in February. A spokeswoman for the camera maker argued to PDN that the company's product line is showing too much "convergence" for it to go to the expense of attending a speciality show. Future shows will only involve those that have the "broadest reach," the representative said.

Tesla Model S platform to be used for electric vans and other vehicles, airbrushing optional
Tesla Motors may now be banking on its Model S to help it snag a bigger piece of the electric car market, but it looks like the car's platform may be the real key to the company's near-term success. Dell recharges its new laptop wirelessly
Following Palm who offer as an option an accessory to recharge the Pre without having to connect it; now it is the turn of Dell to offer this with its latest Lattitude Z.
Offered as an option costing $199, this dock recharges the laptop placed on it. According to Dell, this mode of recharging would be as fast as a direct connection; the efficiency of this system would reach the 70% which is rather good even if that means that 30% of the power consumption is lost, without counting what is already lost at the level of the transformer.
The idea is in any case tempting even though it would certainly have been more practical if the system had taken the form of a carpet that is placed on a desk.

Moto Cliq to ship Nov. 2, match iPhone's price
T-Mobile this afternoon set out official launch details for the Motorola Cliq, its newest Android phone and Motorola's first touchscreen smartphone. Pre-orders for existing users should start on October 19th while the phone should ultimately arrive in stores on November 2nd; those who order in advance may get the phone early, T-Mobile said. MS Courier to use Windows 7, have journal focus?
Microsoft's Courier dual-screen tablet uses a full desktop OS underneath, a leak from the project maintains. Just as the company's Surface multi-touch tables use Vista underneath, the new project is seen by Mary Jo Foley as using Microsoft's latest OS and having access to its deeper features. Snow Leopard: Enabling the root user
By default, the root user is not enabled in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Enabling it takes a simple procedure by way of the Directory Utility application or via Terminal. Sony intros DPP-F700 photo frame with printer
Sony will soon release its DPP-F700 photo frame, which also includes a built-in photo printer. The 7-inch screen on the frame sports 800x480 resolution, and there is 1GB of built-in memory. Users can display the current time in a choice of 21 templates. The integrated printer can create 4x6-inch prints at up to 300x300dpi resolution. The prints uses TruFast technology, meaning they are resistant to fingerprint marks, water and discoloration when exposed to light. Photos stored on the frame can be printed in less than one minute.

Filemaker releases Bento 3 for Mac
Filemaker has released the latest update to its consumer database management software, Bento. This latest update, now version 3, includes support for iPhoto data. You can now link your photos to contacts, projects, events, or other data stored in Bento. Improvements to the user interface show a much more visual approach, including a new Grid View of libraries and inclusion of image thumbnails in File Lists and the related data field.

Android-based ODROID handheld available for pre-order
Hard Kernel has just announced that the developer version of the ODROID Android-powered portable gaming device is available for pre-order as of today. The device features an 833MHz Samsung S5PC100 processor (same as the iPhone 3GS), 512MB of RAM, and a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen. Options for writing to NTFS formatted drives in OS X
When it comes to full read and write support for windows drives, OS X can only do so on FAT32-formatted partitions. The newer and popular NTFS format is a more stable option for Bootcamp and other applications; however, it is only readable by OS X. One of Apple's selling points for OS X is the enhanced Windows compatibility, but the lack of write ability to NTFS drives makes transferring files between the Mac OS and Bootcamp rather cumbersome. Rumours that Apple plans an update for its iMac and Mac mini range continue to percolate as the company’s first Q10 quarter gets set to start.

New Digital Copies on the actual Blu-ray Disc from Sony exclusively for the PSP
Digital Copies packaged in with DVDs and Blu-ray Discs are an old hat, but now Sony is adding a new twist. Up until now, a DVD was bundled in with a Blu-ray Disc just to deliver the Digital Copy. This way you could put the DVD into any PC or Mac and grab the Digital Copy of the main feature. What Sony is doing now is something that was demoed at CES 2008, which is to store a PSP friendly copy, on the actual Blu-ray Disc. Apple has abruptly notified resellers that it's ramping down stock of iMacs and Mac minis in what's likely a sign of new models ahead, according to leaked details. Today, our TV are often connected to ISP boxes, providing media/video content in addition to internet. Many ISP have signed contract with Movie Majors to develop a VOD offer. In a near future, other players might also want to enter the battle field and claim part of the potentially juicy cake of pay-per-view content: TV manufacturers. A new CPU announced by Intel, might further develop our future TV on transform it into a small computer. As we mentioned it in the previous related news, we will keep you updated with the alarming number of cases of Time Capsule units dying suddenly after 18 months of issue-less usage. We previously reported that bad capacitor located in the PSU were dying giving users no other choice than adapting a new PSU or buying a new one. If it does not look like a real pandemic, one can find many new reports everyday on Apple discussion forums. Most of those units seem to have been purchased around March 2008 (so early batch would be affected as it was the case for the APX). WE also encourage unfortunate owners to report the failure to Apple.You could also argue with a representative from Apple support or customer satisfaction service if you have a dead TC on your hands. Apple tablet to have non-3G model, come in January?
Apple's heavily rumored media tablet has received added details today through a leak from a historically accurate source. The device is now thought to have a 10.7-inch screen -- up from the 9.7 most often suggested -- and to have versions both with a 3G modem as well as without. Resolution would logically increase, but it's now said the display may reach near 720p (1280x720) and would be large enough for comfortably reading books and magazines as well as larger websites and videos.

Laufwerkshersteller erwarten erst Ende 2010 Durchbruch von Blu-ray-Notebooks
Einem Bericht der in Taiwan erscheinenden Digitimes zufolge erwarten die dort ansässigen Hersteller optischer Laufwerke eine breite Nutzung von Blu-ray in Notebooks frühestens in der zweiten Jahreshälfte 2010. Aufgrund der hohen Kosten sei Blu-ray derzeit noch dem oberen Preissegment vorbehalten, heißt es. Während ein notebooktaugliches Blu-ray-Laufwerk rund 100 Dollar kostet, können die Hersteller DVD-Brenner ab etwa 20 Dollar einkaufen.

dict.cc: Translations only a touch away
iPhone-Nutzer haben inzwischen breite Auswahl bei kostenlosen Übersetzungs-Werkzeugen. Neben dem hier bereits früher vorgestellten iTranslate hat auch dict.cc jetzt ein Deutsch-Englisch-Wörterbuch als App vorgestellt. pocket.dict.cc ließ sich immer schon im Browser nutzen, genau wie das von vielen Übersetzungsprofis genutzte pda.leo.org, vgl. unten. Die dict.cc-App bietet den Vorteil, auch ohne Internetzugang jederzeit zu funktionieren (Funklöcher, Roaming-Kosten). Dies wird allerdings mit einer Appgröße von 55 MB bezahlt. Im direkten Tempotest dict.cc (App) gegen iTranslate (App), Google App (Programmteil "Übersetzer") und Leo im Browser gewann der Newcomer dict.cc schon aufgrund seiner minimalistisch-narrensicheren Bedienung und einer mal wirklich gut funktionierenden Autovervollständigungsfunktion mit einigem Abstand.

Vielleicht waren die Gerüchte um einen flachen Tablettrechner (wie auch immer er genannt werden mag) nicht ganz so aus der Luft gegriffen? Selbst wenn sie in letzter Zeit etwas verstummten, haben die Gerüchteköche neue Nahrung bekommen: Apple hat nach 15 Jahren Abwesenheit einen neuen alten Mitarbeiter der aufgelösten Newton-Abteilung wieder eingestellt.

Samsung's 12 megapixel SCH-W880 made official
We might still have debates over whether the SCH-W880 represents a cameraphone or our newly minted category of phonecamera, but there's no doubt about this: the Samsung AMOLED 12M is now official and coming to (at least) Korea in October. The specs align closely to yesterday's info, with a 3x optical zoom, 720p video recording, dedicated camera controls, and a 800 x 480 3.3-inch AMOLED display grabbing the headlines. Vodafone nabs iPhone in prelude to UK price war
Now that O2 has lost exclusivity, everyone's getting in on the iPhone action in the UK. First it was Orange, now Vodafone has inked a deal said to have been signed only last night as a defensive move to stave subscriber defections. Vodafone to sell iPhone in UK, price war looms
Vodafone this morning will confirm it has reached a deal to carry the iPhone in the UK, following a similar confirmation from Orange yesterday. Both networks will vie for iPhone customers with O2, which now loses its exclusive deal for the device in the UK market.
With three carriers now confirming they will be selling the device in the UK by Christmas, and given that T-Mobile has also been discussed as a possible iPhone vendor, increased competition between the networks should eventually translate into good news for consumers.

Elgato hat nun die erste iPhone-App für die Zusammenarbeit mit der bekannten Mac-TV-Software EyeTV in den App Store gebracht. Apple startet neues Programm für Bildungseinrichtungen
Besonders in den USA hat Apple einen hohen Anteil im Bildungssektor, für diesen vereinfacht der Mac-Hersteller nun das Lizenzierungsprogramm: Die neue Lizenz ist ein Jahr gültig und beinhaltet Aktualisierungen auf die in dem Zeitraum erscheinenden Apple-Produkte. Auf die Versionsnummer 2.0.3 aktualisiert ein Firmware-Update den iPod classic mit 160 GB aus diesem Jahr. Viel ändert sich nicht: Nach dem Update unterstützt der iPod Genius Mixe. As we mentioned it in the previous related news, we will keep you updated with the alarming number of cases of Time Capsule units dying suddenly after 18 months of issue-less usage. We previously reported that bad capacitor located in the PSU were dying giving users no other choice than adapting a new PSU or buying a new one. If it does not look like a real pandemic, one can find many new reports everyday on Apple discussion forums. Most of those units seem to have been purchased around March 2008 (so early batch would be affected as it was the case for the APX). Intel Releases a CPU Dedicated to HD and Media Content for Our TV
Today, our TV are often connected to ISP boxes, providing media/video content in addition to internet. Many ISP have signed contract with Movie Majors to develop a VOD offer. In a near future, other players might also want to enter the battle field and claim part of the potentially juicy cake of pay-per-view content: TV manufacturers. Indeed, several HD TV models are now able to to browse media content in USB key, external HD, NAS or even internet thanks to the "DLNA" function. A new CPU announced by Intel, might further develop our future TV on transform it into a small computer. DisplayPort Adoption Will Be Driven by Notebooks
An analyst predict that if the DisplayPort will take over DVI as the new standard for video port, it will be by step and primarily with notebooks. The main driving for for the adoption of the DisplayPort is its low power consumption when compared to other format. However, one will first need to quickly and strongly push display/monitor manufacturers to adopt this port and offer models featuring it. Of course, electronic components required for the DisplayPort will have a cost, but many users are not ready to pay a little premium (10-20 USD/€) to have such port natively integrated in 22"+ display. The first manufacturer to offer a good display with a DisplayPort at a reasonable price when compared to the Apple 24 LED Cinema display will most likely capture a large percentage of MacBook Pro owners who are desperately waiting for an alternative option.

It's not every day you see something thoroughly distinct in the laptop scene -- or even barely off the beaten path -- so we were quite happy to behold Dell's new Latitude Z 600 outside of the narrow confines of the FCC. The machine combines a 16-inch 1600 x 900 display with a Core 2 Duo processor and a thin (0.57-inch) and light (4.5 pounds) chassis -- a rather rare trifecta. Verizon adds internet security, online file storage for Mac
Verizon has announced both a new Mac versions of its Verizon Online Backup and sharing software (VOBS) and its Verizon Internet Security Suite. With the storing and sharing app, users can back-up selected files and folders to their designated storage plan, and restore them at a later date. Users can also send or receive invitations which allow people to download or upload photos onto their storage space, for simpler sharing of music, videos, or files. The online storage plans range in size from 5GB to 250GB, with monthly fees starting at $2 and ending at $20.

iPhone Apps now allowed to download software for accessories
According to iLounge, Apple has begun to allow Made For iPod and Works With iPhone-certified developers to include automatic application download prompts. If the devices are connected to the Internet via Wifi or WWAN, the user can then download the necessary software to get the devices to work.
A similar feature works for Printers in Snow Leopard. Plug the printer in and the OS gos out to the internet to get the software for it to work. Now this has been brought to iPhone.

Feel free to feign surprise, but seeing how Sony handled the PlayStation 3 Slim's launch, we kind of expected this. According to an anonymous tipster, at least one Metro Atlanta-area Target store has the PSP Go in stock and is apparently already selling them to (presumably) eager customers.
