Apple has released a software update for people who have purchased their new wireless "Magic Mouse" pointing device. The update allows your computer to take full advantage of the features in the new mouse, and is a recommended installation for all Magic Mouse users.

Final Draft 8 adds text highlighting, scene navigator
Final Draft has released an update to its self-titled scriptwriting software, which includes a range of new functions and features. Version 8 adds the ability to select and highlight text with a new toolbar button, while users can send content from the Index Card Summary directly to the script. Droid Eris turns up in Verizon training course

Canon's EOS 7D experiencing 'residual image' phenomenon, fix is on the way
Canon's $1,900 EOS 7D DSLR just started shipping a month ago to pros and those who'd like to be, and already the thing is causing all sorts of fits when shooting continuously. In a service notice posted today on the outfit's website, we're told that images "captured by continuous shooting and under certain conditions [can exhibit] barely noticeable traces of the immediately preceding frame." The phenomenon isn't apt to be noticeable with optimal exposure, but apparently a number of Photoshoppers have been irked by the additional (and unwelcome) elements added to their shots.

Apple extends full health insurance to part-time employees?
Part-time workers for Apple will soon have the same medical benefits as full-time ones, sources say. Equal insurance is expected to become available in January, and apply to anyone working 15 or more hours a week, so long as a person also has at least a year of Apple experience. The company has approximately 9,900 part-time workers at retail, a large percentage of which should be covered by the new policy.

China's i.Tech has released a solar-powered Bluetooth headset, the SolarVoice 908. The built-in solar charger replenishes the battery while users are wearing or using the headset. Samsung ships two desktop LCDs with TV tuners
Samsung in a late afternoon update added two crossover computer LCDs to its mix. The 23-inch 2333HD and 19-inch 933HD+ both have built-in HDTV tuners and remotes to double as TVs in tight spaces. Appropriately, they both share 16:9 aspect ratios that avoid black bars for native HD video at either a 720p-friendly 1360x768 (for the 933HD+) or 1080p (for the 2333HD).

QuickerTek brings 802.11a to older Macs
QuickerTek has released a new USB wireless adapter which adds Wi-Fi support to any Mac with a USB port. The device handles 802.11a connections running at 5.8GHz, and 802.11b/g/n networks operating at 2.4GHz. 802.11a, notably allows connnection speeds up to 300Mbps.

Open Door Networks has announced a set of upgrades for its DoorStop line of Internet security apps. Google developing free navigation app?
We already know plenty of people who've eschewed traditional turn-by-turn GPS systems in favor of plotting it out for free on Google Maps, and now there's whispers that Mountain View is coming after the rest of the market with a free nav app. That's at least what nav services providers are saying to Forbes, who think El Goog is gearing up to release a free ad-supported navigation app after making moves to use its own US maps instead licensing data from Tele Atlas and putting ads on the iPhone Maps app. Obviously that would shake things up a ton -- and make Android devices a huge bargain -- but we'll see where this all leads over the next few months.

Intel to allow 2GB RAM with future Atom netbooks
Some of Intel's Pine Trail Atoms will finally escape Intel's 1GB RAM cap for netbooks even as they drop prices, a series of leaks have indicated in the past day. While the chip maker will still officially limit certain Atoms to 1GB of memory, the 1.83GHz Atom N470 will reportedly allow running 2GB of RAM. The limit should provide a large jump in performance for small systems, particularly those with more demanding operating systems like Windows 7.

Remove firmware updaters to prevent persistent update messages
When Apple releases a firmware update, the updater will download to the Utilities folder and run from that location. It will then automatically launch, apply the update, and restart your system. After the update is complete, the system will give you a notification that the update has been successfully installed and that should be the end of it. However, while this is what is the normal behavior, some people have mentioned this final notification keeps popping up at every system reboot.

Intel pulls SSD Toolbox for killing drives under Windows 7
Well, that was a short honeymoon -- Intel's now pulled its SSD Toolbox and associated TRIM firmware update amid reports that it was bricking drives under Windows 7. We haven't heard more than anecdotal evidence about this, but we'd definitely pick having a functional drive over the promised 40 percent speed boost from the code, so if you should probably hold off if you've downloaded but haven't updated yet. We're looking into things, we'll let you know -- but man, the X-25M just hasn't had an easy life, has it?

Agile launches public beta for 1Password 3
Agile Web Solutions has launched a public beta version of 1Password 3, an updated Mac login utility. The software saves passwords and other forms of personal identity for quicker insertion into web forms. Version 3's major addition is said to be inclusion of 1PasswordAnywhere, a feature which lets users remotely access information via a web browser. The update also adds 64-bit support for Snow Leopard, and a new user interface.

Shape-shifting 'Breathing Chair' looks to make the beanbag fashionable
Shape-shifting chairs may not always be the most attractive additions to your living room, but Taiwanese designer Yu-Ying Wu is hoping to change that with her so-called "Breathing Chair," which has already won a few prestigious design awards but hasn't yet snagged any commercial partners. The secret, such as it is, is the array of "professionally calculated" holes spaced out through the three layers of foam plastic, which are designed to compress into the shape of an armchair when someone sits in it and spring back into a cube when they stand up. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any video of it in action, but the chair will soon be on display at Red Dot Design Museum in Signapore if you happen to be in the area.

Ozaki has introduced its new iUFO speaker system for the iPod and iPhone. iPhone in "striking distance" of overtaking BlackBerry
The success of the iPhone 3GS could lead to Apple's device overtaking the BlackBerry, a ChangeWave study has found today. Since unveiling the phone in June, Apple has jumped five percent in its market share among those in the study, to 30 percent, and is within a "striking distance" of just 10 percent of RIM's BlackBerry, which fell a point to 40 percent. Palm is flat at 7 percent but successfully used the Pre to stave off the constant declines it has faced for the past three years.

You know, we've been pretty skeptical about the whole "fit" part of the "Wii Fit" phenomenon, and for good reason: as studies have shown, the health benefits of gaming, whether you're sitting, standing, or faux-bowling, are minimal at best. Next-gen Atom N470 to relax netbook spec restrictions slightly further
Netbook specs have been held in check by Microsoft and Intel's dizzying array of rules and restrictions for low-cost machines, but now that Windows 7 is out and Intel's getting ready to release the next generation of Atom chips it sounds like things are about to get slightly better. Microsoft has already started allowing netbook manufacturers to load Windows 7 Home Premium on machines without restrictions, and now Fudzilla says Intel will lift the 1GB RAM limit from Atom machines when the 1.83GHz N470 Pine Trail chip hits in March. We see a lot of gadgets come in the door here at Engadget. In fact, getting them in the door is actually the easy part it's getting them back out that's a bit confusing. Recycling -- something that most of us do on a day-to-day basis with our trash -- is a bit stickier when it comes to gadgets. In recent years, however, most major consumer electronics companies have stepped up their games a bit and begun "take back" recycling programs of their own. Google unveils Android 2.0
Google today at last provided full details for Android 2.0, its first major update to its mobile OS. The platform brings a much improved approach to mail that allows both for multiple accounts and native Microsoft Exchange support. Google Wave to have its own app store
We're still not entirely certain what Google Wave is for -- or even if humans are capable of comprehending it -- but we do know that we're super-intrigued by the idea of third-party extensions that hook into the fledging messaging platform, and it sounds like the folks in Mountain View are as well. Google's planning to launch both an extension gallery and extension store in the coming months, which would allow users to easily find, buy, and share apps for Wave. It's not clear how the sharing will work, or how much Google expects extensions to cost, but it's certainly an interesting way to capitalize on Wave's flexibility. Our first request? Erste Verhandlung zur Vorratsdatenspeicherung angesetzt
Der Erste Senat des Bundesverfassungsgerichts hat für den 15. Dezember eine mündliche Verhandlung über mehrere Verfassungsbeschwerden gegen die Vorratsdatenspeicherung festgelegt. Der Arbeitskreis Vorratsdatenspeicherung hatte am 31. Dezember eine Verfassungsbeschwerde gegen das Gesetz eingereicht. Im Februar 2008 wurde sie um mehr als 34.000 Vollmachten erweitert.

Bell to add Novatel Turbo Stick, MiFi hotspot
Bell on Tuesday announced it will offer the U998 HSPA+ Turbo Stick and the MiFi 2372 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot from Novatel Wireless November 5th, to coincide with the launch of its HSPA network in November. Either of the two new products will allow notebook users to connect to the 21Mbps network from virtually anywhere a signal is present. The HSPA+ Turbo Stick will be exclusive to Bell in Canada and plugs into a USB port of notebook or netbook PCs, with a microSDHC card slot for as much as 32GB of storage.

Schiller: No more major Apple product releases in 2009
The Apple holiday lineup is "set" for 2009, according to the company's senior VP for worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller. The company recently introduced a unibody MacBook, updated iMacs and a multi-touch mouse. DJ Hero now rolling out around the world, around the world
It's been a long haul since it was first announced way back in May, but Activision's DJ Hero is now finally available in North America, and will be making the trip across the pond on October 30th. That includes both the standard $120 version, and the "premium" Renegade Edition, which runs a full $200 and includes an upgraded turntable, a hardshell carrying case that converts to a DJ stand, and a Jay-Z and Eminem two-CD set -- and the game, of course. NEC working on an Android tablet for suits?
Super-vague report in the Nikkei this morning about NEC working on a seven-to-eight-inch "mobile device as capable as a personal computer" that's aimed at business customers -- no specs are given, but the tiny accompanying pic definitely shows the Android app tab at the bottom of that custom UI. Very mysterious. The report says NEC think it'll move 100,000 to 200,000 of these a year after it launches next fall, and plans to sell a million a year over time, but we'll wait to see what's real and what's not before we tackle that prediction.

Google Wave to get own app store
Google at a user group meeting in London late Monday revealed that Google Wave will have its own app store. The real-time communication and sharing tool already has a programming kit for add-in features but will eventually have a central location to buy apps that extend its feature. As Wave is primarily web-based, many apps will live there, but its support for non-web use would allow native apps for specific platforms.

Schiller: Holiday lineup is set, not that 'there are not going to be any new Apple products this year'
Gizmodo got some mixed signals for Apple Marketing EVP Phil Shiller today. They first heard Schiller say, "There are not going to be any new Apple products this year" which they then posted. Apple, however called them up and said that a better way to put it would be that the "Holiday lineup is set".
Update: Interesting, after reading this, Apple called and said that the actual quote is "The holiday lineup is set." Weird. As far as I know, if "the holiday lineup is set," then there would not be any new products in 2010, right?
What does it all mean? Will there be updates to Apple's MacBook Pros, maybe a camera for that iPod touch?

Zune HD stops syncing playcounts with nary a firmware fix in site
This isn't exactly the same magnitude as last year's Z2K scare, but it's still an all-around bummer for all you Zune nuts. According to a spate of complaints posted to the Zune.net forums as of late, certain Zune HD units are not syncing their playcounts properly with the user's PC and Zune Social accounts. To be a little more specific, it seems that if you let a song play through on the device it will not be counted as played -- but if you skip to another tune before it has a chance to complete (but after 20 seconds or so), the play will be counted. Apple Stores expected to return to growth in Dec. quarter
Apple Stores should return to some measure of growth in the December quarter, argues Needham analyst Charlie Wolf. While worldwide retail revenues were up 9 percent overall in the September quarter, Wolf notes that same-store revenues dipped down 6.3 percent. Outlets also saw Mac sales fall 3 percent, and non-Mac sales slip by 0.6 percent. The latter figure is actually thought to have been alleviated by a doubling of year-over-year iPod touch sales, while the former is described as less severe as a result of updated MacBook Pros.

Apple only PC maker growing phone business
Of a recent wave of computer builders entering the smartphone space, only Apple is likely to have more than a small stake the market, Gartner research estimates today. The analyst group believes that "all" major PC firms will have signaled their intentions to build smartphones by the end of 2009 but that none of these will have more than two percent outside of the iPhone maker, even by 2012. Apple sorgt angeblich für Lieferengpass bei Kamera-Sensoren
Wie OmniVision Technologies, Apples Lieferant für die Kamera-Sensoren des iPhone 3GS, einigen Kunden mitgeteilt haben soll, kann es bis Ende November zu einem Lieferengpass kommen. Gerüchten zufolge soll eine erhöhter Bedarf seitens Apple für die Lieferprobleme sorgen. Apple Store bald in Berlin und Stuttgart?
Wie iFun aktuell berichtet, sollen sowohl Berlin als auch in Stuttgart als Standorte für neue deutsche Apple Stores bereits beschlossene Sache sein. Skype fordert EU-Unterstützung für Netzneutralität
Der Regulierungsbeauftragte von Skype in Europa, Jean-Jacques Sahel, hat in einem Blogeintrag die Europäische Union aufgefordert, sich ein Beispiel an der amerikanischen Federal Communications Commission (FCC) zu nehmen, und sich dem Thema Netzneutralität zu widmen. Camera maker hints at 20% jump in iPhone 3GS sales
OmniVision may have given signs of a large jump in iPhone 3GS production today through a leak of its production demands. Best known for making the 3.2-megapixel camera inside the Apple handset, the mini-camera designer is warning its other customers that supply will be tight until at least late November as Apple is consuming much of its stock. Other sources for DigiTimes add that iPhone 3GS orders for the holidays may have increased by as much as 17 to 20 percent.

VMware ships Fusion 3 virtualization tool
Formally announced earlier this month, VMware today began shipping Fusion 3, an updated version of its Mac virtualization software. Another day, another Apple media-related tablet rumour, and this time the leak’s coming from way down under, Australia. That’s where the Sydney Morning Herald has reportedly been chatting with high level media people as it ties deals together to present Slate as the world’s best eBook reader.
Apple’s talking with media execs to firm up deals to get their content available to the device, tipped to be a larger version of the iPhone that’s small enough for a handbag but won’t fit your pocket.

MSI readying Tegra-based e-book reader
MSI is developing an e-book reader that would use NVIDIA's Tegra processor at its core, the company's chairman Joseph Hsu says today. Apple has been actively recruiting media producers in Australia for its rumored upcoming tablet, a claim today maintains. Xerox druckt Schaltkreise mit Silbertinte
Xerox hat eine neue Technik angekündigt, mit der sich elektronische Schaltkreise mittels einer Spezialtinte auf Textilien und andere Materialien drucken lassen. Fresh from helping create a shortage of flash memory components, Apple seems set to create yet another shortage, this time reducing one supplier’s stock of image sensors, as used in the iPhone and iPod nano cameras.

Markt für Grafikchips wächst um 21,2 Prozent

Studien: Potenziale für Mobile und Online Payment
Eine Studie von Capgemini Consulting bescheinigt Mobile Payment als Zahlungsmethode via Mobiltelefon eine hohe Attraktivität bei Verbrauchern. Cap Gemini schätzt das mögliche Marktvolumen in Deutschland nur durch Endkundengebühren auf allein 600 Mio. Euro - also noch ohne Transaktionsgebühren. Laut Cap Gemini sind heute bereits 1,3 Mio. Anwender bereit, bis zu fünf Euro pro Monat zu bezahlen, um Mobile Payment überhaupt nutzen zu können. Der Studie zufolge ist das Wachstumspotenzial gigantisch, da allein ein Drittel der Deutschen dem Mobile Payment noch unentschlossen gegenüber steht. Hier könnten schlüssigere, besser dokumentierte Geschäftsmodelle und -prozesse helfen, bei denen Carrier, Diensteanbieter und Finanzdienstleister zusammenarbeiten. Ein weiteres K.O.-Kriterium ist natürlich die Sicherheit.

Stuttgarter und Berliner dürfen in verhaltene Vorfreude ausbrechen: Wir haben aus recht glaubwürdiger Quelle vernommen, dass die Standorte für Apple Stores in beiden Städten inzwischen fix sind. Pilots too busy with laptops to remember flight path, go 150 miles off course
That Northwest Flight 188 San Diego to Minneapolis that went 150 miles off course? Well, it wasn't because of alcohol or sleeping. No, the cause here was the pilots using their personal laptops while talking about "airline crew flight scheduling procedure." As far as we can tell there was no in-flight WiFi, and it's a good thing, too -- no telling how far of they'd have been if the pilots had access to World of Warcraft.

The cheap SSD of Intel: X25-V arrives via Kingston
We have spoken recently of a new range of entry line SSD offered by Intel. the X25-V will have a capacity of 40 GB that will have the data flow in reading of 170 MB/s compared to 40 MB/s in writing. These disks will appear under the label of Kingston, a partner of Intel that markets already the other X25.

Computerworld installed Psystar's RebelEFI bootloader on two machines, one a PC Desktop and one a Fujitsu laptop/tablet. Both worked but the final results left much to be desired. The desktop PC was stuck at 1024x768 resolution and audio drivers didn't work. Otherwise it seemed to work as advertised. The Fujitsu laptop however was a different story.

New iMac doesn't play nice with Apple's Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter
Apple hasn't exactly been making any promises to the contrary, but it looks like anyone hoping to use the company's Mini Display Port to DVI adapter to hook a game console or other device up to a brand new 27-inch iMac is flat out of luck -- for now, at least. That's because the system's exciting (but pricey) ability to be used as a standalone monitor only applies to devices equipped with their own Mini Display Port at the moment, which does limit your options quite a bit. Thought you could fool us by renaming it "Pixe" in the file, eh Palm? We're onto you not that it matters given you've already announced a release date. At any rate, the Palm Pixi has popped up in the FCC database, being tested for CDMA/1xEVDO Rel 0 and EVDO Rev. A along with Bluetooth and naturally, no WiFi. Sapphire HD 5750: Neue Kühlung, alter Takt

Intel releases a firmware that supports TRIM on its SSD
As promised, Intel offers a firmware via a remote download allowing its X25 to support TRIM. This firmware also improves the performances in writing on its 160 GB disks. To install, it is enough to download it from the Intel site, then use the Disk Utility to burn image " 100902HA88208850.ISO" onto a fresh CD, then startup your computer while pressing the key C.

Quick Note: Guest Account bug rumored to be addressed in 10.6.2
We've had ongoing coverage of the guest account bug that cropped up in Snow Leopard, where depending on how the account was configured when you upgraded there may be a small possibility that logging into the guest account could wipe data from non-guest accounts. This is a rare bug, but one that caused a number of people to be concerned about data loss.

Microsoft abandons Family Guy Windows 7 promo
Microsoft in a sudden reversal today exited its sponsorship of a Family Guy episode due to air in just under two weeks. The company had originally signed on to tie Windows 7 to an uninterrupted half-hour episode of the show known as Family Guy Presents: Seth and Alex's Almost Live Comedy Show that airs November 8th but now says the material it saw in an early cut is "not a fit with the Windows brand" and will leave any Windows 7 advertising to a 12-week Family Guy-related tour. It's believed the humor was considered too controversial for the software developer.

Navigon-Update 1.3: Live-Verkehrsinfos jetzt verfügbar
Das im September angekündigte Navigon-Zusatzpaket mit Live-Verkehrsinfos für Deutschland und Österreich kann jetzt direkt aus der Navigon-Anwendung heraus zugekauft werden. Netflix for PlayStation 3 requires a disc, software solution coming late 2010
It can't all be sweet, right? So Netflix is indeed coming to PlayStation 3, but there's a catch, and that is a disc (badly photoshopped into the picture above) will be required for use -- not just for a one-time install, but every time you want to stream. Joystiq shot some questions off to the company, who justified this as being "fastest and easiest way to let PS3 enthusiasts get Netflix on the PS3" and that an embedded software solution through XMB will be coming late next year. PC-Grafikmarkt wächst um 21,2 Prozent
Die Grafiksparte hat sich im abgelaufenen dritten Quartal 2009 deutlich erholt. Die Zahlen der Analysten von Jon Peddie Rersearch (JPR) sprechen mit dem größten Wachstum seit neun Jahren von einem Quartal zu anderem eine mehr als deutlich Sprache. Scythe „teilt“ Katana 3 zu Gunsten des Preises
Bereits im März dieses Jahres hat Scythe den Katana 3 als preisgünstigen Prozessorkühler präsentiert. Jetzt legt Scythe nochmals Hand an den besagten Kühler und teilt ihn in die Varianten AMD und Intel auf. Dies hat laut UVP einen mehr als 20 Prozent günstigeren Preis zur Folge.

HTC confirms it has Android 2.0 handsets in the works
Of course nobody expects Motorola and Verizon to be the sole benefactors of Android 2.0's Donut-ey goodness in the long run, but in an age of increasing Android ubiquity it seemed odd to see them as the only ones with a more-or-less-confirmed Android 2.0 handset on the way.
