Livestream Livepack: a 'satellite television truck in a backpack'
"Game changing" is thrown around way too frequently these days, but man, this thing just might be. The Livepack is being described as "a satellite television truck in a backpack" by creator Livestream, and for all intents and purposes, it is. Put simply (or as simply as possible), the pack includes everything one would need to stream "HD quality" footage: encoding hardware, a Firewire cable and the real kicker, a built-in wireless connection with six load-balanced 3G modems over three carriers (AT&T, Verizon Wireless and Sprint if you have to know). NVIDIA previews next-gen "Fermi" GPU design
NVIDIA this evening provided an early look at the next generation of its graphics processors. Nicknamed Fermi, the architecture for future GeForce, Quadro and Tesla chipsets will jump from 240 cores to a much larger 512 and should be much faster in each core courtesy of some industry-first techniques. Sierra intros five new AirCard 3G data modems
Sierra Wireless has added five new AirCard 3G data modems to its lineup, including the AirCard 503, AirCard USB 308/309 and AirCard USB 301/302. The 503, 309 and 308 all support high-speed HSPA+ networks, allowing for peak download speeds of 21Mbps. The 503 has a two-in-one design that fits both PC card and ExpressCard slots. The AirCard 503 supports quad-band regular HSPA (850/900/1900/2100MHz) bands.

Greenpeace lauds Apple, HP in new electronics rankings
Activist group Greenpeace has released a new edition of its Guide to Greener Electronics, which ranks major high-tech corporations in terms of their alleged environmental friendliness. Among the companies favored by Greenpeace's press efforts is Apple, which the group notes recently disclosed its carbon emissions. Apple has risen in rankings from 11th to 9th, aided not by the disclosure but by being the "most progressive" computer maker in terms of removing product toxins.

Monster adds details to Heartbeats for US
Monster Cable late this afternoon provided greater details of its Lady Gaga-influenced Heartbeats in-ear headphones. The fashion-oriented audio will come in three models for the US and will sell only through Best Buy. They start with a model that goes without an in-line mic/remote combo. It should ship in black, all-chrome and rose/silver colors and will officially sell for $120 on October 18th, though Best Buy already lists them for $100.

Sony thinks its "aspirational" PSP Go might encourage an uptick in PSP-3000 purchases
We've heard plenty of arguments for high priced products before -- many of them from Sony, oddly enough -- but this has to one of the odder ones. Sony UK's Claire Blackhouse says that Sony was actually expecting a greater backlash from retailers than it got in regards to the PSP Go, and that many retailers are seeing the new launch as a way to get consumers into stores, at which point they'll realize they're too poor for a PSP Go and might end walking out with a PSP-3000 instead. Sadly, the logic sounds pretty sound, though Claire's own suggestions that some families might get a PSP Go for dad and PSP 3000s for the kids seems a lit

Base Mac mini shipping dates slip
Rumors of an immiment Apple desktop refresh were bolstered today by the addition of a delay to shipping times for the base Mac mini. Apple's online stores in the US and in Canada now show the entry $599 model shipping in one to three business days instead of its usual 24 hours. The high-end model has the same shipping time, however.

Pioneer intros industry's first 12x Blu-ray disc writer
Pioneer on Wednesday announced the release of the industry's first 12x Blu-ray disc recorder, the BDR-205. The internal optical drive is capable of recording to blank single- and dual-layer Blu-ray media at the top speed, eclipsing the 8X ceiling of previous drives. The BDR-205 also has the ability to record data onto blank DVDs and CDs, at up to 16x and 40x speeds, respectively.

News: O2 bracing for glut of iPhone returns?
With the announcement of both Orange and Vodafone securing rights to offer the iPhone in the U.K. in the coming months, a number of O2 customers may be looking to take advantage of a two-week window in which they can return their devices and wait for possible better tariff rates and contract terms on competing carriers. First Looks: Scosche KickBack n5 for iPod nano 5G
Relatively simple in design, Scosche's new KickBack n5 case for the iPod nano 5G ($25) consists of a combined rubber and clear plastic shell with a flip-out rear stand and a hole for the nano's camera. The shell offers no front protection save for the places where the black rubber grips the nano's sides; the top and bottom are also entirely exposed. iPhone usurps Symbian as most popular phone OS online
Apple's iPhone OS has successfully overtaken Symbian for the lead in all mobile web traffic, according to the latest data from AdMob. The combined iPhone and iPod touch share has jumped from 33 percent in February to 40 percent in August. Symbian, meanwhile, has almost exactly traded positions with Apple and fell from 43 percent near the start of the year to 34 percent in August.

Google working to make electric vehicles charge more efficiently
The idea to make plug-in electric vehicles charge more efficiently and reduce strain on the grid is hardly a new one, but it looks like none other than Google thinks it can do things better, and it's now reportedly doing some "preliminary work" in the area. Akamai HD Network delivering live, on-demand HD shows for the iPhone
Akamai is preparing the ground for what could emerge to be an avalanche of HD video content streamed directly to an iPhone, as it beefs up its international content delivery infrastructure for provision of HD video services.
We’re also wondering if support for iPhone will lead to easier access to live and on-demand online video content for other Apple devices, such as the Apple TV, which some say may proffer a Web browser designed to enable easy access to video content found online. But that’s just speculation.

Apple tablet will revolutionise eBook publishing
We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again, Apple has big plans for eBooks and its future Apple tablet will help kickstart yet another change in publishing, just as the Mac helped launch the notion of desktop publishing.

BlackBerry Desktop for Mac ships October 2
RIM has confirmed it will ship its BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac on October 2.
As we previously reported, the new software makes it easier to sync data between a Mac and a BlackBerry. It will sync contacts, calendar appointments, tasks and notes from Apple apps including iCal and Address Book.
The software will also let BlackBerry users add and remove applications from their device, schedule back-ups, encrypt back-up files and install software update.

Intuit announces QuickBooks 2010 for Mac, abandons PowerPC Macs
We all know Intuit’s Bill Campbell sits on Apple’s board, so it’s nice to hear his company today announced an all-new version of its popular QuickBooks package for the Mac.

Apple to reveal Q4-09 results October 19, as iMac upgrade closes in
Apple will reveal its fourth quarter FY2009 results during a conference call held on Monday, October 19, 2009, the company confirmed today.
The call will see the final results of Apple’s last 2009 quarter, as the company reportedly moves to beef up its product offering with improvements in its iMac range as it enters the first quarter of the 2010 financial year, which customarily begins between September 28-30.
New iMacs are expected in early October.
Speaking during the most recent Q3-09 call, Apple CFO, Peter Oppenheimer, predicted revenue in this quarter in the range of $8.7-8.9 billion.

MacPractice has released an upgrade for its iPhone framework, iPhone Interface 2.0. The code allows doctors who also have the MacPractice desktop software (MD, DDS, DC or 20/20) to remotely connect to an office database for schedule access, patient records, appointment histories, prescription histories and alerts. LaCie unveils Sound2 premium USB speakers
LaCie chose today to quietly roll out a high-end USB speaker set for notebooks. The Sound2 two-channel set has tube-shaped speaker cabinets with internal engineering from French audio firm Cabasse. Each satellite has a driver with a modest range between 80Hz and 20kHz but with a 15W internal amp for each speaker. They can output at the combined 30W of power when attached to an AC outlet, but in truly mobile use they can run entirely on power from the USB bus.

Smart Devices SmartQ5a MID... now with Android!
If you're a MID fan that's curious about this crazy "Android" you've been hearing about, it looks like the realms are colliding in many new and interesting ways as of late. E World, which seems to be owned by China Mobile, is selling the SmartQ5a touchscreen device pre-installed with Android 1.5 for $199.99. We know some of the more hardcore have been taking it upon yourself to install the open source OS on Smart Devices' 4.3-inch wonder for a while, but now the whole affair appears to have the stamp of approval of the People's Republic itself. Pioneer's 12x BDR-205 Blu-ray burner is so fast it's ahead of its time
We're still not sure if that many people are interested in buying Blu-ray burners yet, but Pioneer just unveiled the first 12x capable drive (up from 8x, and with an 8x read speed that gives us a great idea for the next PlayStation 3 revision) the BDR-205. Several beta, 64-bit Cocoa versions of Vue 8 should be released by early 2010, says developer e-on. Vue is used to generate and render realistic 3D environments, and is primarily divided into Infinite and xStream editions. Modern touchscreen phones like the iPhone, Android devices and the Palm Pre are proving to be much more enjoyable to use than conventional smartphones -- at times in spite of their networks, according to a CFI study. About 83 percent of US iPhone owners are satisfied with their phones while the other two touch-first platforms, Google's Android and Palm's webOS, are close with 77 percent each. In comparison, 73 percent of BlackBerry owners can say the same while those using Palm Treos of different varieties claimed 70 percent satisfaction.

Apple to reveal Q4-09 results October 19, as iMac upgrade closes in
Apple will reveal its fourth quarter FY2009 results during a conference call held on Monday, October 19, 2009, the company confirmed today.
The call will see the final results of Apple’s last 2009 quarter, as the company reportedly moves to beef up its product offering with improvements in its iMac range as it enters the first quarter of the 2010 financial year, which customarily begins between September 28-30.
New iMacs are expected in early October.
Speaking during the most recent Q3-09 call, Apple CFO, Peter Oppenheimer, predicted revenue in this quarter in the range of $8.7-8.9 billion.

Apple tech claims 30 percent drop rate for NYC iPhone calls
Nearly a third of all iPhone calls made in the New York City area are dropped, according to a Genius Bar technician at Apple's SoHo retail store. A person who recently brought his iPhone 3G to the outlet says he complained of being repeatedly disconnected, thinking the issue was related to faulty hardware. BlackBerry Desktop for Mac ships October 2
RIM has confirmed it will ship its BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac on October 2.
As we previously reported, the new software makes it easier to sync data between a Mac and a BlackBerry. It will sync contacts, calendar appointments, tasks and notes from Apple apps including iCal and Address Book.
The software will also let BlackBerry users add and remove applications from their device, schedule back-ups, encrypt back-up files and install software update.

We've been furnished with the above page from an O2 in-store catalog detailing the HTC HD2 (aka Leo), which was set for a UK release on October 12 (though we're hearing that may have slipped to the 26th). Look, we admit it: Honda's U3-X unicycle gave us a bit of a chuckle when we first peeped the video last week. Now look at this, just look at it! Not only does the Honda EV-N Concept steal all the best retro styling from the classic Fiat 500, it also integrates the miniscule U3-X electric transporter directly into its passenger door frame -- adding an additional 22-pounds, at least, in the process. Gotta hand it to LG, it pulled out the big hitting hyperbole with the launch of its otherwise simplistic GD510 touchscreen phone. LG begins with a reminder that it launched "the world's first full touchscreen phone" -- the Prada -- back in January 2007. A claim that Ericsson, Nokia, and others would rightfully dispute. LG then calls the brushed-aluminum GD510, or "Pop," the "most compact 3-inch full touchscreen phone ever made," while boasting of its simplicity. That latter claim is achieved by removing "unnecessary features" that apparently include burdensome WiFi and 3G radios since modern consumers want to browse the internet over GPRS/EDGE. OmniFocus wurde von der Omnigroup aus Seattle auf den neuesten Stand gebracht und trägt jetzt die Versionsnummer 1.7.4. iMac, Mac mini supplies dwindle as new models loom?
Rumours that Apple plans an update for its iMac and Mac mini range continue to percolate as the company’s first Q10 quarter gets set to start.

Expected call drop rate in New York City is 30% says Apple
It turns out that New Yorker's frequent complaints about AT&T's iPhone service aren't unfounded. Some dude sent Gizmodo his Genius Bar adventure - he thought he had a faulty iPhone.
His iPhone was dropping calls left and right ("over 30%") so he brought it in to the Apple Store to have it evaluated. The Apple technician ran some tests and found that his drop rate was "only" 22%. That is apparantly a better than average result for iPhones in New York City.
Conclusion?

Palm verzichtet auf iTunes-9-Anpassung - vorerst

A promotional video from ABB Robotics shows how its FlexPicker robots installed at a HoneyTop foods facility can accelerate production while simultaneously improving hygienic conditions. Auch Vodafone verkauft das iPhone in Großbritannien
Vodafone verkauft künftig ebenfalls Apples iPhone in Großbritannien. Nach Ablauf des zweijährigen Exklusivvertrags zwischen Apple und O2 ist Vodafone neben Orange der dritte Provider, der das Smartphone im Vereinigten Königreich anbietet. Im Gegensatz zu Orange, das das iPhone im Lauf des vierten Quartals in sein Programm aufnimmt, startet Vodafone den Verkauf erst Anfang 2010.

Microsoft Offers a Free Antivirus
Microsoft launched yesterday its home-made free antivirus: Security Essentials.
We do not intend to criticize such move, and it is a more concrete move from Microsoft than what has been installed by Apple in Snow Leopard, and could allow BootCamp users to get the minimal level of protection.Of course, companies offering retailed antivirus application will follow performance of Security Essentials, and will most likely heavily comment any failure from the Microsoft solution. Panasonic Expects Its Stereo 3D BD Video to be Standardized in 2010
As we reported it several times in the past few months, after HD TV, manufacturers are trying to promote 3D HD TV as the new ear and a perfect way to make us buying a new TV while the current generation of LCD or LED LCD TV is still evolving/maturing and still have room or improvements. Of course, all manufacturers are trying to develop their own 3D system and expect to see it adopted and becoming the new standard to collect cash from royalties. After having sold its new Stereo 3D for BD system to many Movie Majors (Twentieth Century Fox or Lightstorm Entertainment), Panasonic is now trying to make its format adopted by the BD LA, in charge of the Blu-ray format and standard. The company might have more competitors here, such as Sony and Macrovision, both companies already working on their own 3D rendering system for BD video.

Six apps to be released parallel to Ken Burns mini-series
Open Door Networks and Project A have announced a series of six iPhone apps will be released in parallel with the new Ken Burns PBS series, "The National Parks: America's Best Idea." The companies plan to release a single app to their Envi product line each day an episode airs, between September 27th through October 2nd, putting out a total of six programs. Based on the companies' iEnvision web-image browser iPhone app, the new apps utilize the "Ken Burns" motion effect to showcase thousands of web-based photographs from about 400 National Park Service sites.

LaCie and loudspeaker manufacturer Cabassee have announced the Sound2 Speakers, a new USB-powered speaker system. The set is designed to be used with any computer, iPhone, iPod or other media player, with plug-and-play connection to avoid setup hassle. The system integrates a Class D digital amplifier with magnetic shielding, which reaches a total output of 15W per speaker. NI Sound and Vibration Suite adds frequency sweep tool
National Instruments has released the NI Sound and Vibration Measurement Suite 2009, a collection of the developers machine condition monitoring and audio test applications. The suite features a new continuous frequency sweep virtual instrument (VI) used to perform frequency response tests. The collection additionally utilizes an AES17-compliant audio filter VI that provides the correct frequency filters for testing audio devices that involve digital-to-analog conversion technology.

Leaked BlackBerry Atlas gives Curve 8900 its CDMA counterpart?
Gemini had its Aries, and now it seems Javeline (a.k.a. the Curve 8900) has found its own CDMA equivalent in the BlackBerry Atlas. (Isn't a shame that RIM's device codenames are so often catchier than their final designation? But we digress.) A new BlackBerry has hit the internet in grainy photograph form, and according to Salomondrin with additional notes from Crackberry, the pictured leak (it's the one on the left) boasts CDMA bands, WiFi, and a 8900 series keyboard. Mum's the word, officially and otherwise, on pretty much any other details, but hopefully RIM won't keep us waiting too long.

Health care reform iPhone app rejected for political reasons
Apple has frustrated yet another developer, as the company allegedly rejected an iPhone app, iSinglePayer, which promotes health insurance reform in the US. The app displays charts and information regarding single-payer health care systems, while GPS information can be used to find a local congressperson. Users can even view the donations to each congressperson from the health sector.

Expected call drop rate in New York City is 30% says Apple
It turns out that New Yorker's frequent complaints about AT&T's iPhone service aren't unfounded. Some dude sent Gizmodo his Genius Bar adventure - he thought he had a faulty iPhone.
His iPhone was dropping calls left and right ("over 30%") so he brought it in to the Apple Store to have it evaluated. The Apple technician ran some tests and found that his drop rate was "only" 22%. That is apparantly a better than average result for iPhones in New York City.
Conclusion?
"The problem is consistent with the service provided by AT&T." Have fun

Verizon bubs flub, hawk their last Hub
No, we didn't accidentally link to the wrong page -- that "page not available" you're getting over on Verizon's site is where the Hub's product site used to reside. The whole thing's been unceremoniously yanked and the product sunsetted, suggesting that the carrier's functionality-rich VoIP base station wasn't getting the love it needed to justify its continued existence, Verizon didn't know how to market it, or some combo thereof. Microsoft unveils Barrelfish multi-core optimized OS
With current operating systems, as the number of cores increases performance decreases. Microsoft Research has just announced an experimental OS, called Barrelfish, that they're developing in conjunction with ETH Zurich, in the hopes that they'll learn how to buck that trend -- both with current and future hardware. Building upon lessons learned with projects including Midori and Singularity, Barrelfish eschews share memory schemes in favor of message passing and a kind of database that shuttles information between cores. Poll: Is your Zune device out of sync with Zune software?
Are older Zune models going the way of the brick? We've received a handful of tips pointing us to the official Zune forums, where reports are coming in that apparently a number of the non-Zune HD units haven't been able to sync with Zune 4.0 software. Although a few people have elaborated on some steps to take (hint: it involves a lot of downgrading and reinstallation of both firmware and Zune software), there doesn't seem to be a clear consensus on its effectiveness. US may need $350b for broadband; CTIA wants spectrum
A mid-progress update from an FCC panel said today that the US may need $20 billion to $350 billion invested into broadband to realize current government plans for readily available, national Internet access. The agency warns that its data is incomplete but that the figures may be necessary depending on the guaranteed speeds, with $20 billion covering relatively basic broadband while the top sum would cover high-grade access. The figure is well beyond the $7.2 billion so far assigned to the initiative.
