Microsoft updates Bing with 'Visual Search' feature
Microsoft's Bing search engine is stepping up its assault on Google by introducing a new tool called Visual Search. Instead of displaying traditional lists of Web site search results Bing's Visual Search displays rows images of items that can be scrolled through via a slick interface.

CTL outs new 2go Classmate PC netbook
CTL has introduced its next generation 2Go Classmate PC, and the first to sport a 10-inch display. The 2go Classmate PC E10 is another rebranded Intel Classmate PC, which itself was developed to compete with the OLPC XO Laptop. All are made to serve as educational tools in developing and developed nations alike. The 10.1-inch form factor allows for the use of a keyboard that is 90 percent the size of that of a conventional notebook, which is better than the 77 percent of the older, smaller models.

Clearwire starts global WiMAX roaming
Clearwire Communications on Monday announced it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with WiMAX operators UQ Communications of Japan and Yota of Russia to allow international roaming. This would involve the three parties collaborating on business and technical aspects, as well as other WiMAX operators and Clearwire's Global Alliance Partner Program members.

A note about last week's Engadget Podcast
A lot of our faithful listeners have inquired as to the status of last week's podcast. We regret to inform everyone that we lost the audio just after we were done recording. To be more exact, the Mac Pro at AOL's studio which was recording our rare (and magical) in-person podcast decided to upchuck the boogie and destroy our precious tracks. What that means is we will be skipping that show (it is already the following week) -- though in the next few days we'll bring you the first-ever Engadget Show as well as a proper podcast. 'iPhone Activation Zones' to grace Apple Stores?
Apple is planning to reorganize the layout of Apple Stores in order to better support the iPhone, anonymous sources claim. Possibly launching as soon as Tuesday, changes are said to revolve around the creation of "iPhone Activation Zones," where people can pick up and activate their purchases after having done pre-authorization online. There people may be met by "iPhone Experts," with distinct sets of badges and t-shirts.

Wii getting $50 price drop this month? One Toys R Us ad seems to think so
Of all the fakeables in consumer electronics, the weekly newspaper ad has to be one of the easiest marks. Still, this one looks pretty legit, and if it's real it means either we're getting a much overdue Wii price cut on September 27th, or someone on the Toys R Us ad team has been severely misinformed. If it's not true and we have to wait another holiday season for the Wii to break the $200 mark, we're not getting Nintendo that Snuggie we promised it for Christmas -- everybody knows only good little boys, girls and multinational game companies get presents.

ATI Radeon HD 5700 series due in October?
AMD will launch its ATI Radeon HD 5700-series GPUs, including the Radeon HD 5770 and 5750, in October, according to sources at graphics card makers. A Monday DigiTimes report maintains that ATI will also release Radeon 5800-series graphics chips on September 22nd, while the 5870 X2 (R800) has been slated for November.

ASUS to launch Eee Keyboard in October: executive
The Eee Keyboard from ASUS will be out in the European and North American markets this October, a company executive a href="http://macnn.com/rd/140719==http://www.pcworld.com/article/171905/asustek_eee_keyboard_coming_in_october.html" rel='nofollow'>said on Monday. iTunes 9 audio, streaming problems claimed
Initial problems with use of iTunes 9 are beginning to emerge, now the software has emerged from internal testing into a wider user base.
The first problem is described within a series of posts on Apple’s discussions forum, where customers claim some loss in audio clarity once iTunes 9 is installed.
As described, users complain that bass-heavy audio played back through the software is muddy or muffled, a problem they have not experienced before. Others complain at loss of clarity and detail when playing existing music files.
However, some customers are denying this, saying music playback has markedly improved.

iTunes U coming to AppleTV, more?
AppleTV day continues here at 9to5macLoopinsight has found some localization strings inside AppleTV which refer to iTunesU syncing. Currently, AppleTV doesn't play content from iTunesU which leads them to believe that there is an update to AppleTV arriving in the near future.
While this isn't a monumental update in functionality, it does mean that something (anything?!) more may be put into the AppleTV in Apple's future. Perhaps AppleTV will see and additional life as a university dorm kiosk or a medium to communication for eLearning.

Zune service down pre-update; Zune HD already discounted
Microsoft this afternoon took down most of its Zune online system for maintenance, including the Marketplace and the web, ahead of the launch of the Zune HD and its accompanying new PC software. The update involves a pre-planned but major revamp of the underlying service and won't see the service go live until the "early hours" of the 15th, just before the hardware and software updates are available.

Apple is distributing a collection of v2.2 updates for Xsan, its SAN (storage-area network) management software. These include patches for the administrative component, in both Leopard and Snow Leopard varieties. Each corrects similar flaws, in areas such as listing computers connected to a SAN, or displaying when LUNs have been truncated.

HTC Hero firmware update peps up the Sense Experience to something usable
Good news for HTC Hero early adopters: HTC has a new firmware update out now for the device that considerably speeds up the interface, if the multitude of reports to be found on the internet can be believed. Seeing as this was the number one gripe with the overall excellent UI, we're incredibly glad HTC has gotten work on this, and we'll be spending some more time with the device to return our newly tinted impressions. iTunes LP, iTunes Extras tap into new JavaScript framework
The LP and Extras features introduced in iTunes 9 are built around new JavaScript framework, probing is said to show. Called TuneKit, the standard is not only aimed at supporting interactive bonus media, but handling it without the need for plug-ins such as Flash, typically used to deal with animations. Bowers & Wilkins downsizes with Zeppelin Mini iPod speaker
It's been well over two years since high-end audio outfit Bowers & Wilkins introduced the iPod-lovin' Zeppelin, and evidently it's time for a downsizing. Apple triggering massive flash memory shortage?
Apple's new iPods and other flash-based devices have sparked an industry-wide shortage in the NAND memory they use, unofficial industry contacts claimed today. Samsung, one of Apple's primary suppliers, is claimed by DigiTimes as having cut its supply of flash memory to Taiwan companies in half. Other companies are faring worse, as Hynix and Toshiba have only promised "limited supply" while Micron has simply said it has no spare supplies at all.

Steenstra Styletto all-electric vehicle gives Tesla a run for its money
Looks like the kids at Tesla have a little competition in the battery-powered sports car stakes. Zune portals close up shop for the day, should re-open with Zune HD launch
No shock here, but it seems as if the Zune world as we know it has closed up for the day. The Zune homepage is currently displaying the banner shown above, while a good number of our tipsters and staffers have confirmed that signing into Zune Marketplace is impossible. Intel producing 32nm CPUs, "Jasper Forest" Xeons
Intel on Monday headed up its Developer Forum with word that it has started manufacturing its first processors based on a 32 nanometer (nm) process. The shrink from 45nm, nicknamed Westmere, should improve performance by increasing the density of the processors by about 30 percent while reducing the amount of power used; the gesture lets Intel boost clock speeds without drawing extra battery life or generating more heat.

iTunes 9 breaking AirTunes connections?
Apple breaking support for third-party devices in iTunes may not have been all that unexpected, but you'd think it'd have support for its own products lined up before pushing a major update out the door -- especially something that it had already broken with the last major iTunes update. Photos reveal real-world look, specs of HTC Leo
A Polish website claims to acquired the first photos of the Leo, an upcoming HTC smartphone. The device is immediately distinguishable through its touchscreen, which covers nearly the entire front surface and is believed to measure approximately 4.3 inches. Leaked data points to resolutions up to 480x800, and the phone is likely to use a resistive touchscreen, in light of the presence of Windows Mobile 6.5. Targus outs notebook cases, accessories, mice, more
PC accessory maker Targus on Monday announced the upcoming release of a whole slew of accessories and carrying cases for notebook and smaller netbook PCs, including mice, cases, presenters, cooling solutions, USB hubs and more. The new mice are compatible with both PCs and Macs, and ship with Energizer MAX batteries for long life out of the box. The first of the new products, the Bluetooth Comfort Laser Mouse has a 33-foot range and sports a 1,200dpi sensor, along with a 6-month battery life. It's priced at $40.

iTunes 9 audio, streaming problems claimed
Initial problems with use of iTunes 9 are beginning to emerge, now the software has emerged from internal testing into a wider user base.
The first problem is described within a series of posts on Apple’s discussions forum, where customers claim some loss in audio clarity once iTunes 9 is installed.
As described, users complain that bass-heavy audio played back through the software is muddy or muffled, a problem they have not experienced before. Others complain at loss of clarity and detail when playing existing music files.
However, some customers are denying this, saying music playback has markedly improved.

New accounting rules may boost Apple stock value
The US government has tentatively approved new accounting rules which could significantly impact the iPhone, and possibly the iPod touch, says Fortune. Under influence from corporations like Apple, TiVo and Xerox, the government has relented to pressure and made initial changes to regulations involving subscription accounting. Roadmap shows Moto Cliq on T-Mobile in October
Motorola's first Android-powered phone, the recently introduced Cliq, will arrive at wireless provider T-Mobile, according to a recent BGR report. A leaked PowerPoint slide from the carrier shows a timeline for the device, among others, though the source says a newer slide does actually show October, and not November, as indicated in the outdated screen capture. Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard läuft auch auf PCs
Dank zahlreicher Neuentwicklungen der OSx86-Community wird die Installation von Mac OS auf einem Standard-PC immer einfacher. Ein neuer Bootloader ermöglicht jetzt sogar den direkten Start der Original-Installations-DVD von Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Zudem sorgt die Kernel-Extension FakeSMC V2 dafür, dass der PC sich gegenüber Mac OS als echter Mac zu erkennen gibt. Eine Umgehung der im Betriebssystem integrierten Echtheitsüberprüfung ist nicht mehr nötig.

Casio, Hitachi, NEC merge cellphone businesses
Casio, Hitachi and NEC took defensive steps to protect their cellphones today and said they would merge their handset businesses into a single joint venture. The deal leaked earlier will see NEC join an existing Casio and Hitachi venture but largely take it over; NEC will have a 66 percent stake while Casio and Hitachi will have 17.3 percent and 16.7 percent respectively. Rogers' 21Mbps 3G, modem go live in five cities
Rogers today officially deployed its HSPA+ service in Canada. The service has a peak speed three times faster than its existing HSPA network, at 21Mbps, and is launching in a much wider area than originally promised. Zune HD sold early, still unusable until tomorrow
See that there? That's a shiny new 16GB Zune HD, which isn't supposed to ship until September 15th. Why bother to honor the street date? Ask the cool cats at the Fort Myers, Florida Best Buy, who has no qualms selling our tipster a unit over the weekend. At the time, no 32GB versions were available, and even now, this 16GB unit won't sync with one's PC or do much of anything useful. Of course, Microsoft's pretty much shutting itself down tonight as it readies a new software update, so we suspect all systems will be go within the next 24 hours. LG today released its first smartphone based on Android rather than Windows Mobile. The GW620 teased earlier is a high-end model with a 3-inch touchscreen and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Apple today quietly reshuffled the prices of the Apple TV for the first time since the 160GB model was added in May 2007. The company has reduced the price of the 160GB model to $229 (from $329) and has dropped the original 40GB model (once $229) entirely. Apple hasn't mentioned any feature set changes for the one remaining model.

ASUS: Eee Keyboard to launch in October, C64 fans unite!
Looks like those DigiTimes sources were right: the ASUS Eee Keyboard will officially launch in North America and Europe in October. And while CEO Jerry Shen is keeping quiet on pricing, the original $400 to $500 estimates should hold-up. Telekom rüstet sich angeblich für Übernahme von Sprint Nextel
Die Deutsche Telekom hat nach einem Bericht des britischen " Telegraph" Berater der Deutschen Bank für eine milliardenschwere Übernahme des amerikanischen Mobilfunkanbieters Sprint Nextel herangezogen. Apple slashes Apple TV prices, abandons 40GB model
We were curious, now we’re convinced Apple has some big, big plans for Apple TV - the company this morning dumped the 40GB model of the product and slashed the cost of the 160GB version of its TV set-top box.
The company has slashed prices on the product, too. The US Apple Store now offers the 160GB model at $229 - that’s $100 less than it cost yesterday, and follows Amazon’s move to slash prices on the product, as we reported last week.

HP Envy 13 exhumed lacking Voodoo DNA
It's been months since we've heard a peep from Voodoo or its swaggering founder, Rahul Sood. Now it seems that one of the changes headed to the Voodoo brand is no branding at all judging by the pics of this purported Envy 13 from parent company HP -- it steals both the name and size-indicative numbering from the Voodoo Envy 133 without a hint to its heritage. In iPhone OS 3.0 findet sich ein Bug, der im Rahmen der Copy&Paste-Funktionalität Einzug hielt und sich das "Widerrufen" (Undo) zunutze macht, um rückwärts stückweise Passwörter auszulesen. Quad-Core Mac Pro nun offiziell auch mit 16 GB RAM lieferbar
Wie Mac Rumors entdeckt hat, wurden die RAM-Optionen beim Mac Pro heimlich erweitert. Bisher war es nur möglich, den Quad Core Mac Pro bei Apple mit maximal 8 GB DDR3-RAM zu bestellen. Nun sind weitere Optionen für 12 GB und 16 GB RAM hinzugekommen, die mit drei bzw. vier 4-GB-RAM-Module realisiert werden. Apple TV billiger - Zukünftig mit iTunes LP + Extras?
Letzte Woche hat die ungewöhnlich lange Lieferzeit für die 40 GB-Variante der Apple Set-Top-Box Apple TV bereits für Gerüchte gesorgt, jetzt hat Apple das kleine Modell ganz aus dem Programm genommen und dafür den Preis für die Version mit 160 GB Speicher deutlich reduziert.
Während die Änderungen in den USA bereits umgesetzt wurden, wartet der deutsche Apple Store noch auf ein Update. Voraussichtlich wird der Preis für das Gerät hierzulande von 399 Euro auf 299 Euro fallen.

Apple is generating a major shortage of flash memory as it ramps up its product plans for Christmas.

iPod touch: Prototyp mit Kamera war offenbar echt
Im Vorfeld der Apple-Keynote vom 9. September waren Bilder eines angeblichen Prototyps des nächsten iPod touch aufgetaucht. Quad-Core Mac Pro nun auch mit 16 GB RAM lieferbar
Bei einem Preis für die Grundausstattung von 2299 Euro kommt es auf 1600 Euro mehr auch nicht mehr an: Im Apple Store lässt sich nun der Mac Pro mit 16 GB RAM gegen einen Aufpreis von 1665 Euro bestellen. Jeder der vier Steckplätze ist dann mit einem 4 GB RAM-Modul belegt. In den technischen Spezifikationen gibt Apple als maximalen Speicherausbau für das Quad-Core-Modell weiterhin 8 GB an. Apples TuneKit-Framework deutet auf Apple-TV-Integration hin
TuneKit ist das JavaScript-Framework, welches sowohl iTunes LP als auch iTunes Extras antreibt, die neuen Angebote im iTunes Store, bei denen der Kunde neben dem eigentlichen Produkt (Musikalbum, beziehungsweise Film) noch Bonusmaterial bekommt. Bei der Präsentation ist weder Java noch Flash mit im Spiel, stattdessen kommt der von Apple auch auf dem mobilen Safari-Browser bevorzugte Mix aus HTML, CSS und JavaScript zum Einsatz.

WebGL hält Einzug in WebKit
Ohne groß Aufhebens darum zu machen, wurde WebGL in WebKit integriert. Bei WebGL handelt es sich um eine standardisierte Technologie, um hardwarebeschleunigte 3D-Grafiken im Browser betreiben zu können, ohne dafür PlugIns installieren zu müssen. LG officially announces GW620, its first Android phone
Though it already broke cover at IFA out in Germany a few days ago, LG's just sealed the deal on its very first Android phone -- the GW620 landscape QWERTY slider. Interestingly, the "Etna" name seen at IFA is missing from the official press release, but otherwise, the 3-inch touchscreen mentioned lines up nicely with what we'd previously known. Camera specs aren't mentioned here, but as far as we know, it's going to clock in at 5 megapixels and the phone looks to be loaded with a very bone-stock Android build sans LG-specific enhancements like an S-Class port. WLAN-Standard 802.11n nach sechs Jahren verabschiedet
Die IEEE war auch schon mal langsamer: Nur sechs Jahre sind vergangen, seit eine Arbeitsgruppe angefangen hatte, den 802.11n-Standard auszuarbeiten. Natürlich existierten in den letzten Jahren diverse Entwurfsspezifikationen, verschiedene Hersteller von WLAN-Geräten wollten bis zur endgültigen Verabschiedung des Standards nicht warten - deshalb ist beispielsweise auch der Broadcom-Chip im iPod touch 3G grundsätzlich 802.11n-fähig.

Dell plant schlankes Notebook mit 0,99 Zentimetern
Dell hat auf einer Teaser-Website ein neues Adamo-Notebook angekündigt, das nur 0,99 Zentimeter dick ist. Das MacBook Air von Apple ist an seiner dicksten Stelle mit 1,94 Zentimetern etwa doppelt so hoch. Weitere Informationen zum Adamo XPS genannten Gerät sind nicht noch bekannt.

Gesundheitsreform: Health Management fürs iPhone
Bereits seit Anfang Juli steht die gleichnamige App von Cencurio kostenlos im App Store bereit, mit der man laut Anbieter die wichtigsten Gesundheitsdaten der gesamten Familie archivieren sowie seine Arzttermine verwalten kann. Die App erinnert automatisch an Vorsorgeuntersuchungen und vergisst auch Haustiere nicht.
Die Cencurio App ist dabei nur die Erste einer Reihe von Anwendungen, welche die Cencurio Software AG im Laufe des Jahres mit Dienstleister Kupferwerk der Öffentlichkeit vorstellen wird. Bereits in Arbeit sind weitere Funktionen wie ein elektronischer Impf- und Röntgenpass sowie sogenannte Medipakete für spezielle Nutzerkreise wie Schwangere oder chronisch Kranke. Auch ein Webportal zum privaten Gesundheitsmanagement ist in Vorbereitung.

T-Mobile said eyeing buyout of Sprint again
T-Mobile's root company Deutsche Telekom is more seriously considering buying Sprint in what could be a major shakeup of the US cellphone industry, according to sources. The two have been rumored in talks for such a deal for over a year, but tips to the Telegraph now have the German firm bringing in financial advisers from Deutsche Bank to evaluate the possibility of making a bid for the ailing but still larger American provider.
