Toshiba intros 640GB portable hard drive
Toshiba recently added a new, 640GB capacity model to its Portable External Drive range. The drive weighs just six ounces, adding to its portability. Users also don't need to carry around AC power supplies, as the device gets its power and transfers data over a USB 2.0 connection. There is an 8MB buffer, and users can create password-protected folders on the drive.

Microsoft waffles on 250GB Xbox Elite ads
Microsoft today provided an unusual response to apparent leaks of a $400, 250GB Xbox 360 Elite gaming console on multiple retailers. When queried about the system by CNET, a Microsoft representative neither confirmed nor denied the existence of the system, saying only that the company has made "no such announcement." Such a response doesn't necessarily confirm the console but is uncharacteristic for a company that has flatly denied Blu-ray drive rumors in the past.

Eine ganze Weile schon ist es her, seit wir das letzte Mal von Altec Lansing gehört haben. Der uns für seine iPod-Soundsysteme gut bekannte Hersteller wurde vor geraumer Zeit von Plantronics übernommen, seit dem ist es auf dem deutschen Markt etwas ruhig um die Marke geworden. Doch zur Berliner IFA kann Altec Lansing mit zwei neuen, iPod- iPhone-zertifizierten Soundsystemen aufwarten.
Das inMotion Classic löst einen alten Favoriten von uns, das iM600 ab. In schickem neuem Design besitzt das leistungsfähige Audiosystem neben der Möglichkeit, Musik vom iPod oder iPhone abzuspielen auch ein integriertes UKW-Radio. Kodak intros two efficient AIO inkjet printers
Kodak on Wednesday announced it has released the ESP 3250 and ESP 5250 all-in-one inkjet printers, which are said to have the lowest overall ink replacement costs. Either has an intelligent paper tray system that can adjust settings based on paper type and size to reduce mistakes. Print speeds are rated at 30 pages per minute in black and 29 pages in color for either model.

Sony intros BRAVIA HDTVs with three tuners
Sony on Wednesday introduced three new BRAVIA HDTVs for Europe. The V5800, W5800 and Z5800 have three tuners for receiving satellite (DVB-S2), over-the-air terrestrial (DVB-T) and cable (DVB-C) channels in standard definition or HD, nullifying the need for separate set-top boxes. The LCDs output at 1080p and also get a CI+ port for cards that allow access to subscription channels. The V5800 has a traditional 60Hz display panel, the W5800 gets a 100Hz display, while the Z5800 uses a 200Hz panel.

Sony's 400-disc Blu-ray Mega Changer reviewed, huge
You know, we never thought that it was that big of a deal to change CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs by hand. Seriously, if you're too lazy to walk two feet to your entertainment center you probably didn't want to see Air Bud: Seventh Inning Fetch that badly in the first place. On the other hand, we are gadget fiends and part of us can see the logic in something like Sony's 400-disc Mega Charger. Hell, if a Blu-ray player is good, one that holds 400 discs must be 400 times as good, right? Well, maybe. Samsung Behold 2 to sport Android OS?
A Bluetooth Special Interest Group document indicates that the upcoming Samsung Behold 2 handset, spotted earlier at the Wi-Fi Alliance and due to arrive at T-Mobile, will be running on the Android operating system. The new document indicates the SGH-T939 will be a GSM phone with a 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen that gives users access to "Google Mobile services and full web browsing at blazing speeds."

Sony readies PSP Gran Turismo bundle
Sony this afternoon geared up for the impending launch of Gran Turismo for the PSP by launching a special Limited Edition Gran Turismo pack. The special run mates the older, UMD-based PSP-3000 in silver with a copy of the racing game, a 2GB Memory Stick Pro Duo, and download codes for the in-game version of the white Corvette ZR1 seen on the cover, a free movie from Sony's PSN video store and 10 songs from its Mac- and PC-ready Music Pass service.

Solar Technology debuts universal CamCaddy camera charger
Solar Technology's CamCaddy universal camera charger has been available in a bundle with the company's Freeloader Pro solar charger for a little while now, but it looks like the company has just now made it available separately for folks not quite ready to go solar. As you might expect, the charger isn't quite fully "universal," but the company says it should be compatible with more than 85% of the proprietary batteries used in digital cameras, camcorders and DSLRs, and it's provided a handy tool on its website to let you check your camera before you buy. Sony puts out PC speakers with iPhone dock
Sony at its IFA show presence added a pair of 2.1-channel PC speakers, including what it claims as a first for integrating iPhones and iPods. The 60W SRS-GD50iP has its own dock in the central controller to play audio from any of the dockable Apple devices or just to keep it charged. A toggle button lets users switch between this and the regular sound output from the computer.

Marware launches 1mm hardcase for iPhone 3G, 3GS
Marware has released the MicroShell for iPhone, an "ultra-thin" hardcase for the iPhone 3G and 3GS. The half-shell design is 1mm thick, with a metallic sheen and a smooth rubberized finish. Six colors are available -- black, red, blue, pink, white and silver -- along with a clear version.

Alleged iRiver Story e-reader pics exemplify imitation as the sincerest form of flattery
We can't fault iRiver for striving to beat Kindle at its game, but to be Kindle is a different story altogether. A Korea-based MobileRead forum member posted a trio of pics that apparently show off the company's up e-book reader, aptly titled the Story. Here's the scoop as "dasony" tells it: the talented Mr. Ripley here sports a 6-inch screen, physical QWERTY keys, up to 32GB expandable memory, 9,000 page turns (per charge, we presume), a comic viewer, and support for PDF, EPUB, and a number of word / document files. Toshiba bows 640GB 2.5-inch drive range
Toshiba today introduced a new range of 2.5-inch hard drives, running at 5,400 rpm with a maximum 640GB capacity. Although that is less space than the 1TB monsters that Western Digital have rolling out by the end of the year, the Toshiba drives are 8.5mm thick. That is small enough to fit in most laptops, making them the biggest such announced drives in this category. The WD drives are 12.5mm thick which are better suited to external enclosures.

Nokia's 3D N810 Internet Tablet caught on blurrycam

MyService offers 750GB MacBook Pro hard disk upgrade
Apple service provider MyService has launched a 750GB MacBook Pro hard disk upgrade. The company is providing round-trip shipping, installation of the drive, and full data transfer. In particular the new drive is a 5400rpm Scorpio Blue model from Western Digital. Its height slightly exceeds the standard 9.5mm for 2.5-inch drives, but still fits in the computers accepted by MyService.

FCC, telcos push for more wireless spectrum
FCC broadband head Blair Levin today pushed for more access to wireless spectrum as part of his organization's plans to expand broadband Internet access in the US. Pointing to complaints that there isn't enough available, the official suggested that the FCC could use the technology not only to grow coverage in rural areas where landlines are impractical or simply to improve the bandwidth available to everyone. He added that the extra spectrum could even be necessary as more wireless devices come online and saturate existing networks.

CrossOver Games 8 supports Snow Leopard, new games
CodeWeavers has released v8.0.0 of CrossOver Games, its specialized virtualization software. Users can play Windows games inside of Mac OS X, without needing a license for the former. Sony Ericsson today launched its long-in-the-making sequel smartphone. The XPERIA X2 updates to Windows Mobile 6.5 and gets the more touch-friendly interface changes of the new OS. The company's own panel interface has an improved panel interface with a more natural, Cover Flow-like navigation in landscape mode and time-sensitive organization that can bring different panels to the front, such as games in the after hours. V-MODA intros Faze headset for iPhone, iPod
V-MODA on Wednesday announced it has started shipping its Faze metal headset, made to work with Apple's iPhone and iPod, as well as other smartphones including BlackBerries, the Palm Pre and other MP3 players or devices with a 3.5mm audio jack. Video: Hands-on Creative X-Fi2, you get what you pay for
Look, you can't expect a cheap, touchscreen media player to cut through polygons like a hot knife through butter. That's just not how it works. And that 3.0-inch screen on Creative's new X-Fi2? Resistive. Sony promises 3D TV sets, other 3D products in 2010
Sony has announced an initiative to bring 3D visuals to several of its products, beginning sometime in 2010. Central is a 3D-compatible BRAVIA TV, which should use a frame-sequential display, and require active-shutter glasses. The company is promising a high framerate, as well as a 1080p resolution for each eye. No prices or narrowed release dates have been suggested.

Psystar expands legal action to include Snow Leopard
Mac cloner Psystar has filed a second lawsuit against Apple, this time contesting policies surrounding Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Psystar should have the right to buy Snow Leopard and install it on third-party computers for sale, the filing says. iPhone app wins Microsoft's own app contest
Microsoft drew embarrassment this weekend when it revealed that the winner of its app development contest was an iPhone app. Although 14 out of the 15 young companies at the Startup Weekend event wrote for a Microsoft platform, it was an iPhone contact memorization app, Learn That Name, which won the most votes from those at the competition. The victory came despite having just 48 hours to build and test the app and should lead to a $3 download when it reaches the App Store.

China Mobile acknowledges continued iPhone talks
China Mobile is indeed still in talks with Apple regarding the iPhone, a spokeswoman for the carrier says. The disclosure follows an Apple admission on Monday, stating that a three-year deal with China Unicom is not exclusive, in theory allowing for increased competition. The China Mobile representative has refused to describe the state of negotiations, other than to say that no conclusion has been reached.

Nintendo Wii gets free web, black remote
Nintendo today treated buyers of the Wii and DSi with a mix of new hardware and software. The former's web browser, also known as the Internet Channel, is now free to use instead of paying the 500 Wii Points ($5) necessary from July 2007 onwards. HTC Snap reaches Alltel
Wireless provider Alltel on Tuesday announced it is now offering the HTC Snap handset. The four-band GSM device uses EVDO Rev. A networks for 3G data access as well as its built-in Wi-Fi connection. Users interface through Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard and a four-row QWERTY keyboard. Microsoft Outlook Mobile is preloaded onto the device, and an Inner Circle feature highlights and prioritizes messages from favorite contacts from any of their saved contact info that includes e-mail accounts.

eBay sells off Skype in deal worth $2.75 billion
Auction site eBay has completed a deal to sell off its Skype VoIP division, according to an announcement. The deal is said to be worth $2.9 billion, granting a 65 percent stake to an investor group including Silver Lake, Index Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. eBay is holding on to a 35 percent equity investment, and gaining $1.9 billion in cash, plus a note in the principal amount of $125 million.

Napster won't get iPhone streaming app
Napster's streaming and download music service will not be coming to the iPhone via a downloable app in the App Store after all, according to a recent MocoNews report. A rep from Napster said the service, which would be offered at Best Buy stores, is not being sent out for Apple approval because of the high licensing fees involved.

iRiver dipped into dedicated e-book readers for the first time today with word of its own device. The Story shares its aesthetics with the Amazon Kindle and has a 6-inch display with a QWERTY keyboard underneath for searches and other tasks; the system is extra-thin and has a 3.5mm headphone jack for listening to audio. NetGear outs RangeMax dual-band router
NetGear on Tuesday announced it is now shipping its RangeMax dual band 802.11 Wi-Fi router, the WNDR3700. The device earns its title through eight internal antennas that provide increased range and potentially better speeds: it supposedly handles as much as 350Mbps in real-world conditions. Firefox gains share in Aug. at IE's expense
Mozilla's Firefox browser cut significantly into Microsoft's market share of web browsers in August, data from Net Applications shows. Its increase to 22.98 percent of the market wasn't an absolute high but resulted in Internet Explorer reaching an all-time low of 66.97 percent, a sharp fall from 67.68 percent just a month earlier. Other browsers also made inroads, as Google Chrome climbed to 2.84 percent (fourth place) and Opera rose slightly to 2.04 percent (fifth place).

Sony VAIOs to use Google Chrome by default
Sony's PC arm and Google have entered into a partnership that will have the latter's Chrome web browser preloaded onto the former's VAIO netbook PCs. Google is also apparently in talks with other PC makers to make its browser the default in new PCs, in similar fashion to competitor Microsoft and its Internet Explorer browser. Verizon ships EVDO/HSPA world 3G stick
Verizon today added a new USB-based 3G modem intended for world travelers. The PCD-made UWM190 supports EVDO Revision A for its data in most of North America but also has tri-band HSPA for 3G in the Americas, Europe and much of Asia. New Android Market leak shows redesign
A pair of photos of the new Android Market have been revealed ahead of what is expected to be their official debut at Motorola's Android event on September 10th. The photos are not the final build of the app store and may therefore change and are also understood to have originated from the upcoming Motorola Sholes handset. Qualcomm in legal trouble over "Smartbook" name
Qualcomm can no longer sell products that carry the "smartbook" name in Germany, as Smartbook AG has filed a restraining order against Qualcomm, Digitimes said on Tuesday. If Qualcomm fails to comply, it faces an equivalent fine of nearly $358,000 or an arrest for contempt. Smartbook AG CEO Dirk Pick says Qualcomm's German website, which divert users to the US page, are blocked to Internet users with German IP addresses.

Apple approves Vonage's iPhone VoIP app
Vonage today said that Apple has approved its iPhone VoIP app. The company doesn't have details of when it expects the software to reach the App Store but says it's already conducting a beta test of the software. It's expected that Internet calling will only work over Wi-Fi, however, due to policies from AT&T and some other carriers that bar VoIP on 3G due to lag and other claimed quality issues.

Chrome OS to have single sign-in?
A dug up line of code indicates Google's upcoming Chrome OS may have what is being called a Chrome OS login manager. While its significance can only be guessed at, it indicates that the Chrome web browser will be very closely integrated with the operating system. There is also speculation of the OS not allowing users to operate other web browsers on their machines. The login manager will be a single sign-on (SSO) cookie, eliminating the need for users to sign into their Google services, such as Gmail, Calendars, Docs, etc separately.

In Brief: Actual Technologies has release a new application which acts as a replacement for the ODBC Administrator tool which was dropped by Apple in Snow Leopard. ODBC Manager is a free utility that configures data sources to be used by programs such as Excel and FileMaker. Panasonic already teasing Lumix GF1 in ads
Panasonic has inadvertently spoiled its launch plans for the Lumix GF1 through at least one ad. Appearing on UK sites, the tower spot is short on details but confirms its position as Panasonic's rough equivalent to the Olympus E-P1 with a point-and-shoot style body but a Micro Four Thirds lens system. Backblaze is in the business of providing online backup service and, by extension, wound up in the hardware business. Upset with the high cost of storage devices, the company designed and built it's own 67TB storage modules for about $7867 (materials alone) each. Toshiba rolls out 640GB notebook drive
Becoming one of the few to cross the 500GB milestone, Toshiba late on Tuesday added a 640GB drive to its notebook-sized GSX hard drives. With two platters to make up its entire storage, the 5,400RPM disk is thin enough at 9.5mm tall to fit in thin-and-light notebooks and also gets incidental boosts from the increased density. Toshiba claims that it's faster, with "significant" speed-ups through the reduced amount of time finding data, and that it consumes 28 percent less power compared to earlier models.

Sony teases 1.5-pound VAIO X
Sony at its IFA keynote previewed an entirely new category of ultraportable. The VAIO X series will use a low-voltage Intel processor (either Atom or CULV) but will have a carbon fiber shell instead of aluminum or another bulkier material. Changing to the very light but stiff body gives it a record-setting weight of just 1.5 pounds, or half as much as most netbooks and ultraportables like the MacBook Air. Apple rejects iPhone app based on chat bubbles
A recent update for an iPhone game has been rejected for purely cosmetic reasons, according to the title's developer. Joe Stump observes that although he was merely submitting bug corrections for Chess Wars, he was called on Tuesday by an Apple representative, who said that after a six-week wait his update was being rejected for having "shiny" chat bubbles. Sony announces VAIO X ultraportable
Sony just announced the VAIO X at IFA 2009, a half-inch thin ultraportable with an 11.1-inch screen and a new all-day battery that "will set the new standard for stamina." The machine's built of carbon fiber, so it weighs just a pound and a half, and we're assuming it's CULV-based, although there's no hard specs at the moment. We're racing to find out more, we'll let you know -- in the meantime, let's have a moment of silence for the previous VAIO X, 2006's chunky and ill-fated "living room PC."
Update: We grabbed some shots of the X in the flesh, but they won't let us hold it, and hard specs are still a mystery.

Official: XPERIA X2 launching Q4, Windows Mobile 6.5 onboard (video)
If you've been waiting with bated breath for some real news on the XPERIA X2, wait no longer. News has just broken that the re-styled, gutted refresh of Sony Ericsson's popular (and expensive) X1 is due to hit "selected markets" in Q4. According to a post on SE's Xperiancers blog, the company is in talks with various carries right now, and will be detailing the plans in the coming weeks. Creative tonight launched a small but tangible update to its Vado HD pocket video camera aimed at making it more affordable. While its only conspicuous change on the outside is a two-tone color scheme, the company now has a 4GB model that makes the camera more competitive with the falling prices of cameras like the Kodak Zi8. Apple provides demo copies of Snow Leopard Server
In a bid to promote its new operating system, Apple is says it is now distributing free evaluation copies of Snow Leopard Server. To qualify, people must fill out a form on Apple's website, and represent a business, government agency, non-profit organization or some form of educational institution. Panasonic intros GF1 Micro Four Thirds compact
As expected, Panasonic today launched the Lumix GF1, its own take on the idea of a rangefinder-like Micro Four Thirds camera. In addition to being slightly smaller than the Olympus E-P1 it shares its system with, the GF1 has a surprise fix for the absence of built-in flash on its competitor: the corner opposite the grip has a hidden pop-up flash that properly distances the illumination from the lens. No viewfinder is built-in, but an optional electronic viewfinder provides 100 percent coverage regardless of lens.

HTC Touch2 becomes first Win Mobile 6.5 phone
HTC used the start of IFA in Berlin to introduce a new range-topping smartphone. Previously codenamed the Mega, the Touch2 is the first phone set to ship with Windows Mobile 6.5 and gets the Microsoft platform's more touch-friendly interface as well as the more accurate Internet Explorer Mobile instead of Opera from earlier models. The latest version of HTC's own TouchFLO nonetheless sits on top and provides surface access to calendars, contacts, media and the web without having to navigate through the deeper interface.

Nokia provides detailed Booklet 3G specs
Today at the Nokia World show, Nokia provided the full, finished details of its Booklet 3G netbook. The 10.1-inch portable is now known to sport a 1280x720 resolution display and will run a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM, and Windows 7 preloaded onto its 120GB hard drive. The 16-cell is key to Nokia's controversial battery life claims and is rated at up to 12 hours. As before, the machined aluminum chassis measures less than 0.8 inches thick and weighs less than 2.8 pounds.

Snow Leopard security features still too weak?
Apple has still left considerable gaps in Mac security, despite advances in Mac OS X Snow Leopard, say some security experts. The OS is said to have several protection advances over Leopard, most notably a built-in anti-virus scanner, perhaps the first concrete admission from Apple that Macs are now vulnerable to malware. The tool scans content received through apps like Safari, Mail and iChat, and can also check signatures to determine whether a file has been altered since its creation.

Microsoft axes all non-touch Zunes
Microsoft late Tuesday revealed that it's discontinuing every non-touchscreen Zune in its lineup. While the company previously said the Zune HD was replacing the flash players, staff in the media player team have told journalist Paul Thurrott that the hard drive-based Zune 80 and Zune 120 have also ceased production and that sales of these and any remaining Zune will only continue until they run out of stock. It's not certain how long this will last.

Nokia on Wednesday introduced its latest handset, the clamshell Mural, which will be offered exclusively by wireless provider AT&T. The device sports a 2.2-inch, 320x240 resolution screen, a 2-megapixel camera and support for 16GB memory cards. BSA: Zahl der Hinweise auf unlizenzierte Software verachtfacht sich
Wie die Business Software Alliance (BSA) mitgeteilt hat, verachtfachte sich durch die Mitte Juni angelaufene TV-Kampagne "Es gibt gute Gründe, illegale Software zu melden" die Zahl der Hinweise auf unlizenzierte Software. Auch sonst hat die BSA eine aus ihrer Sicht positive Bilanz ihrer Arbeit im ersten Halbjahr 2009 gezogen. 74 percent of PS3 owners have watched a Blu-ray, but how many have watched two?

Browsermarkt: Internet Explorer verliert weiter Anteile an Firefox
Net Applications hat Microsofts Internet Explorer im August einen Marktanteil von 66,97 Prozent bescheinigt. Damit sank der Anteil um 0,71 Prozentpunkte gegenüber dem Vormonat und um 8,16 Prozentpunkte seit August 2008. 9to5mac found something that might interest all users expecting a Mac Tablet. If one could already display the keyboard on the screen, it is now possible to resize it to fit dimension of your monitor ready to be used on touch-screen-based interface.
If you want to test it, simply go into Preferences Panel/Keyboard, then select the option to display the keyboard in the menu bar. Then you will simply need to display it.
We might soon type on our screen, for those already using the iPhone, it is not a real problem, nor a difficult experience requiring time to adapt.

Toshiba bows 640GB 2.5-inch drive range
Toshiba today introduced a new range of 2.5-inch hard drives, running at 5,400 rpm with a maximum 640GB capacity. Although that is less space than the 1TB monsters that Western Digital have rolling out by the end of the year, the Toshiba drives are 8.5mm thick. That is small enough to fit in most laptops, making them the biggest such announced drives in this category. The WD drives are 12.5mm thick which are better suited to external enclosures.

Bundesregierung und deutsche Verleger widersprechen Google Book Settlement

Toshiba hat eine neue 2,5-Zoll-Festplatten-Serie mit Kapazitäten zwischen 160 GB und 640 GB vorgestellt. We'd be tempted to use the word "featurephone" on the X6 (pictured) if it wasn't Nokia behind the handset, pumping the relatively chubby 0.55-inch thick form factor with 32GB of storage, a 5 megapixel camera, a dual LED flash, TV-out, and a 3.2-inch touchscreen. Umfrage: Vielflieger wünschen sich WLAN an Bord
Wakefield Research hat im Auftrag der Wi-Fi Alliance ermittelt, dass ungefähr 75 Prozent aller geschäftlichen Vielflieger die Wahl einer Fluglinie von der Verfügbarkeit drahtlosen Internetzugriffs an Bord abhängig machen würden. Etwa die Hälfte aller Befragten würde sogar ihren Flug um einen Tag verschieben, wenn sie dafür einen Flug mit WLAN-Zugriff nutzen könnte. Es gab eine Zeit, da wurde das Dateisystem ZFS schon als HFS+-Nachfolger gehandelt und tatsächlich schien die Entwicklung darauf abzuzielen: Apple engagierte mehrere mit ZFS vertraute Entwickler und für Snow Leopard Server gehörte das Dateisystem sogar zu den Neuerungen, mit denen geworben wurde. Gerüchte um Apple TV-Update & iPod-Sonderangebote
Die zur Zeit ungewöhnlich lange Lieferzeit für die 40 GB-Version der Apple Set-Top-Box Apple TV liefert Anlass zu Spekulationen. Ein US-Analyst sieht dies als untrügliches Zeichen für eine Hardwareaktualisierung im Rahme der für nächste Woche angekündigten Apple-Veranstaltung.
Tatsächlich wäre zumindest eine größere Festplatte längst fällig, denn die 40 Gigabyte im kleineren Modell sind alles andere als zeitgemäß. Gut möglich ist zudem, dass Apple dem Gerät neue Funktionen spendiert. Gerüchteweise soll ja mit iTunes 9 auch eine neue Form der Musikvermarktung (Cocktail) präsentiert werden, vorstellbar ist eine Kombination aus Audio- und Videoinhalten und Apple TV wäre als "großer iPod für HD-TVs" sicher dick mit im Boot. Last week we gave you various information about the Intel Arrendale processors; we expect these to equip the next generation of Apple portables at the beginning of 2010.
Among this information, one knows that the processor will normally run at 2,66 GHz but will be capable of automatically overclocking up to 3,33 GHz as long as it does not exceed the maximum thermal envelope that has been assigned. We now know that it will be the same for its graphic part, unfortunately derived from the GMA 950. It will be able, under certain conditions, of passing from 500 MHz, its base frequency to 766 MHz, which will give a whiplash to this aging architecture. Alas, it will not be sufficient to hope to be able to launch a game and certainly not to have use of Open CL in the graphic part.

Studie: Netbooks auf dem Vormarsch

Toshiba intros 2.5-inch 5400RPM 640GB hard drive in internal / external flavors
It's no speed demon, but Toshiba's newest 2.5-inch hard drive sure lets you store an awful lot of illicit images precious memories on a single unit. The 640GB MK6465GSX drive spins at 5400RPMs and is said to be the industry's largest in this form factor. Hitachi Unveils Travelstar 7K500
While some competitors already released similar products, Hitachi unveiled its new high-end notebook-dedicated 2.5" HDs, aka Travelstar 7K500.
With a 9.5mm thickness, those drives will be compatible with all Apple MacBook and Mac mini SATA models. They sport 16 MB of cache, spin at 7200 rpm, drain 1.8 W in use, and only 0.2 W when idle. It offers up to 500 GB of storage space, and Hitachi claims this new series would be 16 % faster than the previous one. With several manufacturers offering 2.5" HD at 7200 rpm, customers might enjoy high-end plate-based HD at a good price.

Western Digital Unveils its 2 TB Caviar Black Models
This is a day for numerous announcements related to plate-based HDs. Western Digital now announced its new models of 3.5" HD. Offering a storage capacity of up to 2 TB (WD2001FASS), the Caviar Black series, unlike the already release Green models spinning at 5400 rpm, are offering 7200 rpm for delivering higher performance levels.
With a cache of up to 64 MB, those drives sports 2 CPU responsible for managing data flow and avoid any bottleneck effects. This new models also features the Dual actuator technology, allowing a better positioning of the head of the disc thanks to both electromagnetic and piezoelectric systems; however, it is only available on the high-end model with 2 TB storage space. The warranty on those products is set to 5 years.

Panasonic goes rangefinder with the Lumix DMC-GF1
We've been wondering when Panasonic would do something a little more interesting with a Micro Four Thirds sensor than simply pack it into an SLR-style body, and it looks like the new Lumix DMC-GF1 is the first step along that road. First leaked early last month, the spec sheet aligns pretty closely to the similarly sweet-looking Olympus E-P1, although most of the numbers max out a little lower: 12.1 megapixel Live MOS sensor with ISO 3200 sensitivity, 720p 30fps AVCHD Lite or Motion JPEG video (sorry, no mic input), three-inch LCD, and HDMI out.

All Zune models not named 'Zune HD' on the outs
Microsoft guru Paul Thurrott of SuperSite for Windows fame has read the writing on the wall. According to the reps he spoke with, production has ceased on all Zune models before the upcoming Zune HD. In other words, when supplies run out, Zune 4, 8, 16, 80, and 120 are as good as dead, with only this year's model left standing. Video: Nokia N900 put through its paces... in Italian
We're sure to see a whole lot more of the Nokia N900 as Nokia World gets underway this week, but in the meantime we're super into this video walkthrough posted up by Kiamanokia.it -- and not just because the Italian narration makes using the N900 seem absolutely delightful. Nope, we're much more into the extremely-responsive interface, the rotary-zoom gesture in the browser, and the overall slickness of Maemo 5. We'll withhold judgment until we spend some time with an actual production N900, but things are looking promising -- head after the break to check the video for yourselves.

As we reported last week, Vonage submitted its iPhone app to the store to go thru the approval process. One short week later, they say they are approved.
Vonage is the second big VoIP company (almost 3 million US subscribers) to have an iPhone and iPod touch application. Skype, which Ebay sold today to private investors for $2 Billion, was the first.
There are many other VoIP services on the iPhone but they all have one thing in common: They are all only allowed to function on Wifi. Vonage will be no exception. While it hasn't shown up in our app store, it is expected to by the end of the week.

Sony to debut 3D BRAVIA TVs by end of 2010, also eyeing 3D VAIOs, Blu-ray films, and PS3 games?
The Financial Times has it on good word what the major unveil in Sony chief Sir Howard Stringer's keynote tomorrow at IFA 2009 will, so much so that it's quoting him with phrases he hasn't even said yet. According to the report, the company is making a huge push into the third dimension, with 3D BRAVIA HDTVs hitting the retail channels by the end of 2010. Also on the menu is 3D-compatible PlayStation 3 titles (which we've kind of heard before), VAIO laptops, and Blu-ray movies, but it's unclear from the article if they shares the same 2010 timeline. Gene Muster is on a tear: New AppleTVs next week?
In yet another research note to investors, Gene Munster today said that AppleTVs are going to get updated at September 9th event. His rationale? The 40GB version is taking 1-2 weeks for delivery at the Apple Store (160GB version is next day). He pads this by saying that the AppleTV hasn't been 2 weeks behind in shipping since he's been tracking the device.
He hypothesizes that the 160GB version will stick around and Apple will have a bigger model(s) ready for release next week. That is pretty light evidence, but on the the other hand, AppleTV is LONG overdue for an update.

Panasonic Lumix GF1 banner ad hits the web, still not official
So much for subtle, ambiguous leaks. As a great follow-up to the first blurry pics we saw of Panasonic's Lumix GF1, someone over at dpreview apparently pulled the trigger a little early and posted a vertical banner ad for the micro four thirds camera, with the tag line "DSLR photo quality in ultra compact flat design." 4/3rumors has some of the other ad variants if you're curious -- so now that its ad campaign is primed for launch, anyone care to take a guess how much longer we'll be waiting for its full debut?
