AT&T, Google trade barbs over Google Voice while FCC listens in
AT&T filed a scathing letter with the FCC earlier today complaining that Google's exhibiting a blatant double standard with Google Voice by blocking customers' access to numbers hosted by carriers that charge higher interconnect fees -- something that's specifically forbidden for traditional telephone carriers under so-called common carrier laws. The argument essentially revolves around the fact that Google's move helps it compete unfairly against AT&T and others by arbitrarily blocking calls to numbers that'd cost it too much to connect, which AT&T says puts Google in an "intellectual contradiction" given its "noisome trumpeting" (ouch!) of support for net neutrali

Freecom announces world's first USB 3.0 hard drive, the XS 3.0
It might not look like much -- in fact, we're not sure what it's trying to look like -- but that there is what Freecom purports to be the world's first SuperSpeed USB 3.0 hard drive. Dubbed the Hard Drive XS 3.0, the drive will be available mid-November in 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB sizes, with a surprisingly accessible starting price of 119 Euro (about $175 US). Of course, it takes more than just a speedy cable to up hard drive speeds, but we'd say 130MB/s ain't a bad start. The drive can handle AES 256 bit encryption, is backwards compatible with USB 2.0, and the fanless, rubbber-clad enclosure weighs in at 1.9 pounds.

More iMac and MacBook refresh rumors pop up
Two separate reports came in today on upcoming consumer Macs.
French site MacForever says the new iMac swill have SD card slot(s) and Quad core processors. Interestingly, Quad-core Intel i7s were released this week which are the fastest mobile processors money can buy. iMacs traditionally have had mobile processor chips (except the G5 edition) so this wouldn't be a stretch. MacForever even speculates that the high end iMac may contain a Xeon processor, something that until now was reserved for Mac Pros and XServes.

Standards board changes subscription accounting rules, Apple CPAs drunk with power
We'd heard Apple was pushing the Financial Accounting Standards Board to change the rules by which Cupertino's accountants reported iPhone and Apple TV revenue, and it looks like the effort was successful. The new rules allow Apple (and other companies like Palm) to report revenues on products that bundle hardware and software all at once, instead of parceling out the revenue over time using subscription accounting to enable free software upgrades. Tap Tap Revenge 3 submitted to App Store for approval
Tapulous has finally submitted Tap Tap Revenge 3 iPhone app to Apple for approval, according to the Business Insider. The update will be a major revision to the company's popular music game inspired by console hits such as Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution. Video recording hacks for the Pre making nice progress
The Pre's proven to be an eminently hackable platform pretty much from day one, and given that, it stands to reason that major "missing" features are going to either be added in the hard way or a few good programmers are going to die trying. The virtual keyboard developments are seen as a big win for users, and next up is true video recording -- something inexplicably missing from the device considering its ample (well, theoretically ample) processing power. Work on homebrew recording tools seems to be moving along nicely, with some open-source tools already available -- so far, they're apparently able to push it to 480

Duplicate or missing applications in "Open With" contextual menu
The "Open With" option in the Finder's contextual menu (or in the "info" window for documents) may sometimes list incorrect numbers of relevant applications. When this happens, the menu may show duplicates of all entries, or may only show doubles of certain applications. Additionally, applications that could open a specific document may be missing from the menu.

HTC Leo looking confirmed for O2 UK debut, will be free on the right plan

FCC seeking comments on spectrum needs
As part of its ongoing attempt to expand the wireless spectrum for its national broadband plan, the FCC has now opened comments to the public asking whether the so-called "prime bands" below 3.7GHz, considered ideal for wireless data and video, are sufficient for the near- and long-term demands of wireless broadband. The FCC seeks to get information from industry players by October 23rd regarding the ability of the current spectrum to support future build-outs and which bands are best suited for mobile or fixed wireless broadband.

Popcorn Hour C-200 hands-on
Popcorn Hour's latest all-accessing all-playing media device has finally made its way into our hands, and while we haven't had nearly enough time to put the C-200 completely through its paces, we did spare a moment to take some pictures and play a movie or two. Other than using RF (no line of sight needed here) the remote is mostly unchanged from the earlier A-110, though we have had some issues with the box not responding to inputs, tightening the antenna seems to have made things better for now. Verizon: LTE rollout to be 'as close to all-at-once as possible'
Historically, wireless rollouts have been miserably long, protracted affairs that take countless years to complete, but Verizon's talking in some really aggressive terms as it moves to LTE. Hasselblad launches 60-megapixel H4D camera
Hasselblad chose Friday to unveil a long-in-progress upgrade to its H System medium format cameras. The H4D is billed as one of the first cameras to have a true off-center autofocus system, known as True Focus. Where even DSLRs often have to first focus and then reposition the camera to get focus significantly away from the center, the H4D has a yaw rate sensor that can detect the horizontal and vertical movement away from the focus point and refocus the lens to compensate.

PS3 3.0 / 3.01 firmware update making Blu-ray drive unusable?
What could possibly cause nearly 700 comments on an official Sony blog post announcing the relatively minor 3.01 firmware update for the PS3? Plaudits? A Kanye meme gone awry? No, it's the age old problem of an update that apparently breaks more than it fixes. In this case, a sizable number of users are reporting that the 3.0 and/or 3.01 update caused their PS3's Blu-ray drive to be all but unusable for both games and Blu-ray movies (although some folks report that DVDs still work). Spontaneous Snow Leopard logouts unsettle users
Several Mac users are reporting that Mac OS 10.6 (as well as 10.6.1) will spontaneously log out of their account in the middle of using applications. The issue does not appear to be related to specific applications running as users have reported it happening while using Excel, Word, Safari, Photoshop, and Filemaker Pro among others. Most guesses have the problem related to Rosetta running on the new operating system, though an official fix has yet to be reported.

AT&T enables MMS on iPhone
AT&T on Friday enabled MMS functionality for iPhone customers, after a long wait and a range of criticism. Users can enable the messaging service after downloading a carrier settings update via iTunes and then rebooting the iPhone. RIM stock crashes on outlook, iPhone threat
Research in Motion's stock fell a sharp 19 percent on Friday in a reaction to the company's mixed performance in its latest quarter. Investors were upset with both the steep quarter-to-quarter drop in net profit as well as a relatively conservative outlook that saw its own estimates only slightly above what it managed during the summer. Analysts had been expecting much higher numbers with the usual fall sales spike and new BlackBerries known to be in the pipeline.

HTC HD2 inches closer to reality, hitting Europe in October for around 600 Euro?
We already heard about a potential October 12 launch for the HTC HD2 (Leo) on O2 in the UK, and now we're hearing October for the Netherlands as well -- with a 550 to 600 Euro price range. JVC intros 1080p pocket camcorder
JVC has introduced its latest digital camcorder first in Japan, the PICSIO GC-FM1. The company's first attempt at a pocket camera like the Flip, it measures just 5.8 by 2 by inches in size but packs an 8-megapixel still photo sensor that records video at 2.03 megapixels. The latter gives it 4:3 ratio 1080p (1440x1080) video at 30 frames per second in the H.264 (AVCHD) format on SD and SDHC memory cards. The GC-FM1 sports a 2-inch LCD screen, while an HDMI output lets users view their videos on HDTVs at full resolution.

Palm's webOS 1.2 may not show until next week but could come with iTunes syncing back in place, a supposed leak from a source says. Sprint's own need to test the revamped App Catalog is said to have triggered a short delay and forced Palm to move to 1.2.1 instead. In what has become the "hip cool thing to do" for consoles these days, the 250GB version of the PS3 Slim is up for pre-order in the UK before it's been even confirmed by Sony for most of the world. Sadly, it's just the boring old black version -- so far the white PS3 Slim has only been seen making nice with Final Fantasy XIII in Japan -- but at £285 (about $455 US) it is more than double the capacity for only 40 more "quid" than the original PS3 Slim. Google bestätigt erneuten Ausfall von Google Mail
Google hat einen erneuten Ausfall von Google Mail bestätigt. Nach Unternehmensangaben war nur eine "kleine Gruppe von Nutzern" betroffen, die gestern ab etwa 16.29 Uhr deutscher Zeit nicht auf den E-Mail-Dienst zugreifen konnte. Nachrichten auf Twitter lassen vermuten, dass auch eine kleine Menge Google-Mail-Nutzer einer großen Zahl Betroffener entspricht.

Verizon pays $5m to ASCAP for ringtone "performances"
Verizon on Thursday took preemptive action and paid the music royalty group ASCAP $4.99 million as an "interim" license for cellular ringtones on its V CAST service. The payment covers all ringtones bought since November 11th 2004 and is meant to temporarily settle the issue until the two settle a dispute over how much Verizon owes, if at all, for the short samples. It's unclear if the payment is reversible.

Rumors of a Pre-less Verizon "off base" according to analysts
A dubious rumor from The Street floating around about how Verizon was snubbing the Pre due to lackluster sales and no outlet for its VCast Store (which was a bit too thin to make it onto these virtual pages, in fact) has been questioned by a couple of analysts today. According to Deutsche Bank's Jonathan Goldberg and Morgan Keegan & Co's Tavis McCourt, a combination of supply chain orders and Palm's own 2010 financial projections -- not to mention Verizon's long history with Palm -- all point to a Pre launch on Verizon early next year, as previously rumored by the WSJ and confirmed by Verizon itself in July. Radeon HD 5870/5850 Already Overclocked
Following theofficial announcement of the Radeon HD 5870, all manufacturers unveiled their products. In order to be ifferent, ASUS announced that it will offer an overclocked product. This card will be power by a GPU clocked at 1035 (instead of 850 originally), and its memory at 1400 MHz (instead of 1300).
Holding already the crone for the best graphic card in its class, the overclocked versions push even further performance levels. It has of course a cost on voltage, moving from 1.15 V to 1.3 V, meaning higher heat release and power draining. Even better, the Radeon HD 5850, which will only be available later on, was also overclocked, its voltage moved up from 1.05V to 1.4V, pushing its GPU from 725 MHz to 1050 MHz, and its memory to 1300 MHz. With such settings, the HD 5850 is almost as fast as the overclocked high-end HD 5870.

At this point we're a little bored of the Instinct HD leaks, especially now that it's been saddled with that hefty $250 pricetag, but how about a detailed video hands-on for olde tymes sake? Looks like we've got ourselves another Windows 7 launch, folks. The Eee Top ET2002 and ET2203, which have graced these pages with their touchscreens before, have ironed out an all-too-familiar launch date (October 22nd) and some fairly competitive Europe prices, weighing in at £559 and £819, respectively. Microsoft hat eine Initiative vorgestellt, die sich an Webentwickler in kleinen Unternehmen mit bis zu zehn Mitarbeitern richtet. Das sogenannte "WebSiteSpark Program" enthält drei Lizenzen von Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition, zwei Lizenzen von Expression Web 3 und eine Lizenz von Expression Studio 3. Ballmer: Apple can't control the phone market
Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer said in an interview late Thursday that Apple is unlikely to ever control the smartphone market the way it does portable media players. The executive argued that the sheer scale of the phone market, which could amount to almost 1.3 billion devices this year, made it impossible for any one hardware company to take control. Apple's lead in media players was possible only because it participated in a niche, he added, and the company has usually never had more than a niche position in larger markets.

EU plans further cut in iPod volume levels
The EU preparing to pass new laws that will limit the maximum volume of iPods, iPhones and other MP3 players to an even lower extent than the current volume limitations.
Meglena Kuneva, the European Commissioner for Consumer Affairs, will unveil an EU mandate for all firms producing personal music devices.
It will state that in future all devices will have a built-in default level, said to be around 80 decibels. That’s 20 decibels lower than the 100 decibel maximum demanded by the EU be set on iPods which already ship in Europe.

Overall, one can agree that Apple successfully released a deeply recoded OS without changing massively the interface. If it is true for most components of the system, QuickTime X still appear as incomplete, no finished or optimized. A clear example is the Snow Leopard installer offering you to use QuickTime 7 by default. This is also true for all users with the limited functions available on QT X menu. Intel: Always going further to reduce the consumption of their processors
Since the arrival of its Core processors Intel decided to put the accent on energy consumption by avoiding as much as possible wastage. With the arrival of Nehalem the foundry set up a technology called " Power Gating". It makes it possible on these processors to cut one or more cores when they are not in use, their consumption being then close to 0W. The gain in energy is then very substantial since the transistors are not on stand-by but turned off. Currently this is only possible; on the scale of a complete core. In the summary at an Intel conference, PCinpact outlined the future intentions of the foundry. This idea is to push even further Power Gating and thus it will make it possible to shut off the current to a part of a core when this part it is not exploited. Nun verdichten sich die Gerüchte, dass zumindest eine Überarbeitung der iMac-Reihe kurz bevorsteht. According to AppleInsider, Apple could have already launched production of the new iMac models.
According to their source, the design should evolve, be thinner, similar to the 24" LED Cinema Display, prices should be down, and a Blu-ray drive could be a BTO. A BD drive would be something new as it remains an exception in computers, and is mostly targeting standalone players for Home Cinema. Nachdem gestern Abend das TomTom Car-Kit genauso plötzlich aus dem Apple Online Store verschwunden ist, wie es herein kam, hat nun TomTom auch die ungenaue Beschreibung im Apple Online Store korrigiert. Internet Explorer zieht mit Safari, Chrome gleich ...
aber nur mit einem neuen Plug-in von Google namens Chrome Frame. Kommt Chrome Frame zum Einsatz, übernimmt innerhalb des Browserfensters des IE nicht die Trident-, sondern die WebKit-Rendering-Engine die Darstellung. Letztere ist der des IE deutlich überlegen, gerade bei der Unterstützung des aktuellen HTML5-Standards, aber auch der Darstellungsgeschwindigkeit.

Gerücht: Neue iMacs in den nächsten Wochen
Laut der US-Webseite AppleInsider läuft die Produktion neuer iMac-Modelle bereits auf Hochtouren. Eine Vorstellung der Geräte wird innerhalb der nächsten zwei bis drei Wochen erwartet.
Angeblich soll das Design der neuen Geräte leicht überarbeitet worden und die Gehäuseform etwas schlanker sein. Über die Integration eines Blu-ray-Players wird wie bereits bei den letzten Generationen spekuliert.
Wer also über einen iMac-Kauf nachdenkt und absolut Up-to-Date sein will, sollte sich vielleicht noch etwas gedulden. Wenn der Preis im Vordergrund steht, lohnt sich dagegen vielleicht öfter mal ein Besuch im Apple Refurb Store - dort finden sich stets im Preis deutlich gesenkte Auslaufmodelle oder Rückläufer.

In August an employee of Rocky Mountain Bank sent a message to one of its correspondents. By error, some very confidential data on 1325 bank clerks was sent to some unknown person with a GMail address. These data contained their coordinates, their social security number, their tax references and even the details of their loans in progress. This data contains information that is commonly used in the the United States for the stealing of identities.Trying to make good his error, this employee sent a second message to this GMail account expressly asking the owner not to read the preceding message, to destroy it and to confirm this by return email. Griffin Technology has announced it's expanding the line of protective cases for the iPhone 3G and 3GS with additional patterns and hard cases. Carbon Copy Cloner 3.3 preserves HFS+ compression data
Marco Bombich has released v3.3 of his flagship application, Carbon Copy Cloner, which is used to backup a users' files. The latest version supports Mac OS X Snow Leopard and preserves HFS+ filesystem compression data during backups. The backup process is enhanced to better save a large number of files with extended attributes and features a "bootability" notification that informs users when a target volume's disk is not partitioned with the Apple-recommended GUID or APM partition scheme.

FirmTek has introduced Snow Leopard-compatible versions of its SeriTek/2SE2-E and the SeriTek/2SM2-E storage adapters; the adapters are used to add external eSATA ports to any Mac, offering speeds twice as fast as FireWire 800 connections. SolarCity charging stations on Highway 101 give Tesla owners a little more time in the sun

Apple has created a new Green section of its website that it hopes will help address some of the issues concerning reporting of information. What's a little strange is that Cyanogen is targeted at "Google Experience" devices like the G1 and myTouch, so it's not like Google is really protecting anything here -- leading us to wonder if they're just using the copyright argument to shut down a popular mod that's tempted over 30,000 users into rooting their phones. Tip: set terminal to store only unique commands in the history
When you enter commands in the Terminal, they are saved in a history that you can scroll through by pressing the up and down arrows. This is convenient because you can quickly access previously entered commands for repetitive tasks, or to access previously used syntax for a command. While this is useful, if you have entered the same command several times you will have to scroll through the same command in the terminal in order to get to a unique command you entered. This default behavior can be changed, which may be convenient for people who access the terminal frequently.

IDF Zum Abschluss des Intel Developer Forum legte der Chiphersteller traditionsgemäß Benchmarks seiner nächsten Produktgeneration vor. Court denies motion to include Snow Leopard in Psystar suit
US District Court Judge William Alsup has denied Apple's motion to include Snow Leopard in its case against Psystar. Apple initially argued to keep the updated operating system out of the case by "relentlessly objecting to discovery on Snow Leopard," Alsup writes. Update für Geneforge 5: Overthrow
Für das Fantasy-Rollenspiel Geneforge 5: Overthrow der amerikanischen Spieleschmiede Spiderweb steht nun Patch 1.0.4 zum Download bereit. Verizon backing away from Palm Pre?
Although claiming to be on the rise, Palm may have been dealt a serious blow through a rejection by Verizon, a rumor hinted this afternoon. Supposedly in touch with those near discussions, TheStreet claims Verizon has dropped the Pre from its future plans. Why this would be hasn't been explained.

The first external disk with USB 3.0 has been announced
Freecom has just announced what is the first external hard drive compatible with standard USB 3.0.
It would be able to transfer data at 130 MB/s, which is much higher than USB 2.0 and also Firewire 800. It will be available in November in 3 capacities, 1,1,5 and 2 TB is well before computers with the ability to exploit this interface. In order to overcome this disadvantage, Freecom will propose a PCI Express USB 3.0 card for $25,95 or an Express card at $29,95. This is very cheap since the disc itself will not have a prohibitive price; $119 for the 1 TB model.
NB The owners of the latest MacBook Pro 15" are deprived of the Express Card connector.

Verizon's 4G rollout to occur "all-at-once"
The planned launch of 4G data on Verizon's network in 2010 will see the company switch on service in as many areas at possible at the same time, the carrier's chief technical officer Tony Melone said today. He promised IW that the company wouldn't mimic the usual carrier "tease" of introducing faster service one area at a time and instead would launch it "all-at-once." The move would lead to several or more of the 25-30 expected 4G markets being ready on launch day.
