Op: ARM Cortex chip is Flash-friendly, can iPhone be far behind?
We’re still pondering the ramifications of Adobe’s sundry smartphone announcements yesterday, and think we may see more to come in the Apple/Adobe/Flash story in future.
We know Adobe has introduced a feature for Flash developers which lets them purpose versions of their applications for the iPhone. The upcoming version of Flash CS5 will allow you the option to "Export Project to native iPhone application." While Apple hasn’t yet uttered comment on this, we’re hopeful the company will not oppose the first third-party development IDE for its device.

Apple online store opens in Brazil; China gets an App Store
Apple continues its expansion South of US borders, with launch today of its own online Apple retail store in Brazil - and has also opened up the iTunes Store for business in China.
The new store twins with iTunes Stores which are now open in Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico and many more Latin American territories. We’re not sure when these opened, (sorry about that - perhaps you, dear reader, can educate us).
Further afield, iTunes now hosts stores for a spinning variety of European countries, including those formerly part of the Soviet bloc.

Environmental groups respond to Apple's green moves
The first green groups have begun responding to Apple’s move to withdraw from the US Chamber of Commerce in protest at that group’s non-green agenda.
Apple last night revealed its immediate withdrawal from the US Chamber of Commerce because of the groups “strident criticism of plans to reduce US greenhouse gas emissions”.
In a letter to the Chamber president, Apple VP, Catherine Novelli said: "Apple supports regulating greenhouse gas emissions, and it is frustrating to find the Chamber at odds with us in this effort."

AT&T to permit Skype, Google Voice on its 3G network, iPhone follows?
Gosh, this is unexpected. Rumours are emerging this afternoon which claim AT&T may be preparing to announce support for Skype and Google Voice calls over its network.
That’s what the Washington Post is claiming, citing industry sources “close to the thinking of AT&T executives” (which we hope doesn’t mean psychiatrists or seers) who are making these claims.
If these claims are true then it’s possible we’ll be hearing news of support for the VoIP services over AT&T’s network as soon as Wednesday, when the carrier is expected to make some kind of splash at the CTIA Conference.
This news of course comes on the heels of the

AT&T allows VoIP calls on its network
Wow, that didn't take long at all. The Washington Post was right but it happened a few weeks before expected. AT&T has flipped around and is now allowing 3G VoIP traffic on its network. Our jaws are on our desks. We're pretty sure the FCC had something to do with this. That Verizon-Google thing probably didn't hurt either.
This will allow apps like Skype and Vonage (and Comcast VOIP?) to operate outside the bounds of Wifi. Skype VoIP over 3G works pretty well on the iPhone - we tried it way back when it wasn't blocked. All that needs to happen now is

Clickfree has released the Transformer SE (Special Edition), a device for turning any iPod, iPhone or USB hard drive into an automatic storage device. After plugging the Transformer into a computer and connecting any storage via USB, it will automatically backup and organize files into free space. The device is capable of working with multiple computers or storage systems, and can be used to transfer data from one computer to another.

AT&T allows VoIP calls on its network

Minder Softworks intros MYStuff item management app
Minder Softworks has released a new organizational tool for keeping track of purchased items, MYStuff. Users can catalog information such as receipts, images, PDFs, warranties and manuals, along with a variety of data including how much a product cost and where it was bought. Users can assign a location for each individual record, and also provide folder names and pictures.

Epson launches PowerLite Presenter, more projectors
Epson on Tuesday announced that its PowerLite Presenter projector is now shipping. At the same time, Epson introduced the EX31, EX51 and EX71 multimedia projectors for small businesses, which replace the outgoing EX30, EX50 and EX70 projectors. Compared to their predecessors, the new projectors are nearly a third smaller and a fifth lighter, while increasing brightness levels to 2,500 lumens.

AT&T has announced that it has taken the steps needed so that Apple can begin allowing VoIP applications on the iPhone to run on its 3G network. Verizon Motorola Sholes not running MOTOBLUR?
We'd been hearing rumors that the Motorola Sholes on Verizon wouldn't be running MOTOBLUR because it's to be a "Google Experience" device, and while that seemed silly at first, it certainly looks like the device Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam was waving around this morning was running stock Android. AT&T's restrictive network policies might have been behind some of the more notable iPhone app rejections in the past, but at least one major class of applications just got the green light, as Ma Bell just eased the restriction on iPhone VoIP calls over 3G. What does this mean for you? Well, Skype on the road, for starters, but we're guessing a flood of interesting new VoIP apps will hit just as soon as devs can get their apps updated and submitted. AT&T to allow iPhone VoIP on its 3G network
AT&T on Tuesday afternoon confirmed rumors and said it would allow voice over IP apps like Skype to work on the iPhone's 3G access. It had previously forced these apps to use Wi-Fi and justified the change of heart by arguing that it had taken a "fresh look" at the Apple smartphone's support for the feature as part of periodic reviews. Verizon TV ad chides AT&T for poor network coverage
Verizon is exploiting complaints about AT&T's network coverage in a new TV ad (see below), which also indirectly targets Apple and the iPhone. "Browse the web and download music and apps, at 3G speed, in five times more places than the nation's number two wireless carrier," the ad says. The centerpiece of the ad is the slogan "Want five times more 3G coverage? Thereís a map for that," a reference to Apple's marketing for the iPhone and the App Store, which frequently uses the tagline "There's an app for that."

Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.5 update guide: no, no, maybe
Alright, so it's no secret that the upgrade path to Windows Mobile 6.5 is pretty limited, but Microsoft has nonetheless gone and laid thing out with another handy upgrade guide to avoid any confusion. The short of it is that those with Windows Mobile 5.0 or 6.0 devices are flat out of luck if they're looking to upgrade to 6.5 (although they may be able to upgrade to 6.0 or 6.1), while users of Windows Mobile 6.1 devices (but not those aforementioned users that have just upgraded to 6.1) may be able to upgrade to 6.5 at some as yet unspecified point in the future. Only 12% of PCs, 3% of Macs would switch to Win 7
Despite Microsoft's ambitions, only a small portion of the existing computer base is likely to jump ship for Windows 7, a new Retrevo study found today. About 12 percent of existing Windows users plan to upgrade their existing PCs to the new operating system, and 47 percent plan a "wait and see" approach before making their decisions. Mac users are also largely unswayed by the release with only three percent indicating they might change platforms.

ChemSec, CPA back Apple greening efforts
Two environmental advocacy groups have praised Apple in a joint report, newly distributed to the media. Active Media debuts 'seriously fast' Aviator 312 USB 3.0 SSD
It may not be the first USB 3.0 hard drive, but Active Media's new Aviator 312 external SSD does look to be the fastest one around at the moment-- assuming it actually lives up to the company's claims, that is. The biggest of those are read speeds "up to" a blazing 240MB/s and write speeds up to 160MB/s -- both, of course, made possible through the magic of USB 3.0, which also just so happens to let the drive be an external one, and be powered solely by USB. AT&T to allow VoIP apps on iPhone, more?
AT&T may back away from its policy against Internet calling apps on its devices based on a leak circulating just before the fall CTIA show. Those close to the provider's executives reportedly told the Washington Post it's "close" to accepting voice over IP apps on all phones, including data-heavy devices like the iPhone. When this would take effect, if at all, isn't clear.

Nobel Prize in Physics shared by CCD inventors, fiber optics pioneer
It's not every year that the Nobel Prize in Physics falls within our scope of coverage, but this year turned out to a big exception, as the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has deemed it fit to recognize two breakthroughs in the fiber optics and digital photography. Lotus Notes, Domino update to support iPhone, other devices
IBM has released v8.5.1 of Lotus Notes and Domino, the company's enterprise-level collaboration packages. Through Lotus Notes Traveler the software now has native iPhone support, allowing Domino to automatically sync e-mail, contacts and calendars. Push e-mail is supported, and owners of iPhones can work offline if need be.

PSP O Rly? Modder adds camera, custom firmware to Slim, films own infomercial
Very rarely are we rendered speechless by a mod, but we have just seen a video that seriously blew our minds. It seems that someone called JoblessPunk DESIGNS has managed to imbue a PSP Slim with dual nubs (more on that in the video below), a second USB port for charging, a camera, custom firmware (for emulators and the like), and switched out the UMD for 32GB flash memory. But that's only the beginning: It seems that this gentleman is on a mission to single-handedly destroy the PSP Go by bringing his own vision of handheld gaming to the masses -- and to help him do just that he's put together one hell of an infomercial, complete with multiple camera angles, a vintage cable access set, and a truly mystifying soundtrack. HTC HD2 to arrive Stateside in early 2010 -- huzzah!
Snap, looks like that painful feeling in our gut was just from that late-night Mickey's sesh after all. HTC's Peter Chou told SlashGear today that the monstrous, amazing HTC HD2 will be coming to the United States of America sometime in Q1 of 2010. Hard drive maker LaCie on Tuesday introduced two new external hard drives that were designed by Phillippe Starck. Both sport a sculptured magma motif from the world-famous designer, which is touch-sensitive in the Starck Desktop. AT&T to permit Skype, Google Voice on its 3G network, iPhone follows?
Gosh, this is unexpected. Rumours are emerging this afternoon which claim AT&T may be preparing to announce support for Skype and Google Voice calls over its network.
That’s what the Washington Post is claiming, citing industry sources “close to the thinking of AT&T executives” (which we hope doesn’t mean psychiatrists or seers) who are making these claims.
If these claims are true then it’s possible we’ll be hearing news of support for the VoIP services over AT&T’s network as soon as Wednesday, when the carrier is expected to make some kind of splash at the CTIA Conference.

HTC on Tuesday used the kick-off for Windows Mobile 6.5 to launch its widely publicized new flagship smartphone. VMware Fusion 3.0 with 64-bit support announced; VirtualBox Updated
Since the release of Snow Leopard, many people who use virtualization solutions have been frustrated by the lack of 64-bit support for their virtual machines. The three popular programs Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion, and Sun VirtualBox have so far been 32-bit only and will not launch on the Snow Leopard 64-bit kernel. VMware has a press release on their website that announces the release and availability of version 3.0 of Fusion, which brings 64-bit support along with other enhancements to the software.

Canon USA on Tuesday said it has added two new multimedia projectors to its REALiS lineup. This includes the WUX10 Mark II and SX80 Mark II, both of which use Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCOS) technology. Research and development company Eolas Technologies has filed a lawsuit against over a dozen companies, including major technology businesses such as Apple, Adobe, Amazon, Google, eBay and Sun. The first green groups have begun responding to Apple’s move to withdraw from the US Chamber of Commerce in protest at that group’s non-green agenda.
Apple last night revealed its immediate withdrawal from the US Chamber of Commerce because of the groups “strident criticism of plans to reduce US greenhouse gas emissions”.

NPD: school notebook sales "recession-proof"
Back-to-school notebook sales were as strong as ever this year but skewed in favor of cheaper systems, the NPD Group said today in a new study. About $1.6 billion of the $7.6 billion spent between late July and mid-September went directly to notebooks, or about as much as was spent last year despite ongoing economic problems. However, the revenue came at the expense of system prices: while more systems were sold, the average price of a school notebook fell from $804 last year to $624 this year.

Our friend Drita at Engadget Spanish were lucky enough to spend some extended moments with HTC's much anticipated HD2 -- also known as the Leo. It's got exactly the same specs we just heard about: a 4.3-inch WVGA capacitive display, a 1GHz MSM8250 Snapdragon processor, integrated FM radio, a 5-megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.1, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. They found this Windows Mobile 6.5 baby to be elegant and light feeling in the hand, the touchscreen to be responsive and quick, and HTC's Sense UI beautiful. Get Flash Applications on iPhone...Without Flash
Adobe Systems announced to have developed a set of tools that allow Flash developers to create native iPhone applications without requiring the support for Flash on the device. This has been an unilateral effort from Adobe's side only, and the company expects Apple will consider this move and recognize it. This is not the expected Flash player allowing users to browse through a website as one knows it on Mac OS X or Windows, but it will allow developers to offer application on iPhone without rewriting the code. In fact, with the beta version of Flash Professional, which should be available later this year, developers will be able to export their Flash code in a format that can be run on the iPhone as a native application. So, the solution is a workaround till Apple agree to further help Adobe to bring a true native Flash Player and support for the iPhone.

We've got a thing for Sanyo's Eneloops. Had it ever since Sanyo released us from the clutches of underperforming NiCad and NiMH batteries about five years ago. Its latest AA and AAA batteries can be recharged about 1,500 times, that's about 3 years of continuous service and 500 more cycles than competing rechargeables, according to Sanyo. The batteries also feature a low self-discharge rate so they remain usable even after they've been charged and stored in a drawer. Bell, Telus to carry iPhone in Canada
Canadian carriers Bell and Telus have announced separate deals with Apple, ones which will let them both carry the iPhone 3G and 3GS beginning in November. The companies have published no details of their agreements, such as phone prices, subscription plans or specific release dates. Apple online store opens in Brazil; China gets an App Store
Apple continues its expansion South of US borders, with launch today of its own online Apple retail store in Brazil - and has also opened up the iTunes Store for business in China.
The new store twins with iTunes Stores which are now open in Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico and many more Latin American territories. We’re not sure when these opened, (sorry about that - perhaps you, dear reader, can educate us).

KDDI Polaris Robot concept -- it's like Rolly, but with a purpose
Being a Japanese carrier and all, it's no shock to see KDDI with a large presence at CEATEC. What was surprising, however, was the cute little device you see pictured above. We'll spare you the obvious cheap jokes, but grabbing hold of NTT DoCoMo's Touch Wood concepts at CEATEC was a true, honest-to-goodness pleasure. Engineered in cooperation with Sharp and Olympus, the kidney bean-esque touchscreen phone was accompanied by a TV tuning smartphone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Both units were in the early prototype stage, with the bean shaped fellow being a mere mock-up that failed to do anything when pressed. Video: Microvision's laser-based SHOW WX pico projector shines at CEATEC
Microvision just struck a deal to start shipping its PicoP-based SHOW WX pico projector in Asia, and while the size may not blow any minds, the image quality just might. With a native 848 x 480 resolution (WVGA), this one pumps out more pixels than pretty much any other pico projector on the market today, and with enough darkness, it can actually spit out an image that's around 100-inches in size. We stopped by the company's booth here at CEATEC in order to have a look at what makes the world's first laser-based pico PJ so special, and we can honestly say the picture was pretty stunning (considering the device we're talking about). Popular UK online music shop 7digital this morning launched its US store. The primarily web-based service focuses on price and is offering some newer albums as well as many older ones at $7.77. Songs can also run as low as 77 cents each, and all downloads are platform-independent, 320Kbps MP3s that should work with Apple devices as well as most other portable players. NPD: Mac owners are bigger gadget nerds than PC owners
There's no easy way to say this so we'll just spit it out: Mac owners are bigger gadget nerds than PC owners. At least that's the conclusion drawn in NPD's 2009 Household Penetration Study. NPD concludes that Mac owners not only own more computers than the norm, they also own more types of consumer electronics -- the average Apple household owns 48 consumer electronics devices compared to 24 in the average computer household. In fact, NPD suggests that "Apple household owners' actions and purchases can be used by the industry as leading indicators for hot new products and adoption." Hardmac lehnt sich ganz weit aus dem Fenster: diesmal geht es um Final Cut Studio, der Filmschnitt-Suite von Apple, die in der Version 2 mit großem Bahnhof 2007 vorgestellt wurde. It's widely acknowledged by users, media, and even Steve Ballmer himself that Windows Mobile is in dire need of a ground-up revamp, and it's happening -- but not quite yet. That's Windows Mobile 7 you're looking for, and realistically, it's not going to be in your pocket for at least another year. That leaves Microsoft in a bit of a pickle: how do you facelift version 6.1 -- which is already a facelift of 6, which in turn was a facelift of 5 -- just enough to eke another year or two of life out of it? Is it even possible?

Studie: 85 Prozent der Mac-Besitzer nutzen auch Windows
Zwölf Prozent der US-Haushalte, die über einen Computer verfügen, besitzen einen Apple-Rechner. Das ist das Ergebnis einer unter 2300 Teilnehmern durchgeführten Online-Umfrage der NPD Group. Touch-Cases mit Kameraloch im Handel
Als Apple Anfang September wider Erwarten einen neuen iPod touch ohne Kamera vorgestellt hat, waren nicht nur wir überrascht. Die Erweiterung des Touchscreen-iPod um eine Foto/Video-Funktion galt als sicher und im Vorfeld wurden gar Prototypen mit Kamera auf der Rückseite gesichtet. Es wird vermutet, dass technische Probleme für den Rückzieher (oder Aufschub) verantwortlich waren. Das Gehäuse des iPod touch ist noch ein ganzes Stück dünner als das des iPhone, somit lässt sich die dort verbaute Kamera nicht 1:1 übernehmen.
Auch die Zubehörhersteller hatten auf die Kameraerweiterung gesetzt. Bei diversen Firmen warteten die Produktionsstätten nur noch auf das letzte "Go", andere dagegen waren offensichtlich sogar schon einen Schritt weiter: In den USA sind jetzt verschiedene iPod touch-Hüllen mit Kameraaussparung im Handel aufgetaucht, und zwar nicht nur billige No Name-Produkte sondern auch ein Modell der zum Philips-Konzern gehörenden Marke DLO. In case you hadn't noticed, rumors of an imminent Android launch on Verizon -- the carrier's first -- have been at a fever pitch the past few weeks, and like clockwork, the States' largest wireless network has gone ahead and scheduled a conference call with Google for 7AM Pacific Time / 10AM Eastern Time today. To be fair, it's not a guarantee this is Android-related, and it is interesting that Motorola isn't listed as a participant on the call considering that its Sholes / Tao / Droid had been rumored as Verizon's first Android device -- but none other than Eric Schmidt and Verizon chief Lowell McAdam will be in attendance, so we expect it to be something big. Palm pulls paid apps due to major bug allowing free app downloads
After mere hours of App Catalog-stravaganza, the paid apps have been removed for the time being by Palm due to a major flaw in purchase verification. From what we've gathered from the seedy underbelly of the internet, an exploit involving building your own dummy application with the same name as a paid application allowed folks to download a free "update" to these falsified shells and score for-purchase apps galore without dropping a cent. Whether or not this was the only exploit afoot we're not sure, but it sounds like plenty of folks found ways to nab apps for free because Palm has clamped down hard on distribution for the time being. Couple of days ago, a story related to an iPhone App developed in Switzerland made quite some buzz on the net as some websites concluded that it was a security breach in Apple's iPhone OS. Indeed, same sites claimed that developers could obtained the telephone number of customers downloading and making use of their application, creating a potential conflict regarding personal data storage and handling. Those personal details to be recovered are known as MSISDN. We then asked to mobile phone carriers if such data could be effectively retrieved, and hereafter is a summary of what we learned:

Neowin reports that thousands of hotmail account passwords were unveiled to the public for a short period of time on its forum. It is currently unclear if they have been downloaded or obtained by third-parties, but the story is serious enough for Microsoft to initiate an internal investigation on the matter. The very evening of the App Catalog's launch of paid apps, Palm has made a very different kind of announcement: it's going to let developers skip out on the App Catalog if they so choose. Palm at a special event tonight staked out its differences with Apple by making key changes to its developer program. The smartphone developer is one of the first after Google to foster open development and said it will dismiss its usual $99 app submission fee for any developer whose webOS apps are open-source. Verizon removes gloves, begins 'There's a map for that' anti-AT&T ad campaign (video)
Ouch. If you've been waiting for another flare up in the old carrier wars, here you have it. Turning Apple's "there's an app for that" slogan on its ear, Verizon has introduced a campaign touting its network coverage. The ads -- which highlight the company's new tongue-in-cheek "there's a map for that" catchphrase against tuneful, chirpy music -- also boast that Verizon's 3G blanket is a whopping five times the size of AT&T's. Does this do anything to dispel the idea that Verizon and Apple may be getting together for that phantom tablet? Who knows, but it's fun to watch the fireworks. iPhone headed to Telus and Bell's fancy new HSPA networks next month?
Rogers is losing its iPhone exclusivity in Canada next month, if a new report by The Globe and Mail is to be believed. Telus and Bell -- traditionally CDMA-bound -- have been prepping GSM networks of their own in a joint effort, and it sounds like they'll be getting this off on the right foot with the iPhone 3GS as a launch device. Nothing's official just yet, but those in the know expect an announcement tomorrow or Wednesday. Rogers isn't the best-loved carrier in Canada, and a bit of choice never hurt anybody, so this seems like pretty good news all-round for our friendly northern neighbors

Comcast looking to buy NBC?
Not sure how a story like this snuck under the radar on Friday, but the WSJ reports that Comcast and NBC are in the early stages of a buyout offer -- Comcast's plan is to control 51 percent of a new joint venture with current NBC owner GE. Needless to say, that would be a massive content industry shakeup, and it would bring over two dozen networks and stations under Comcast's control, from E! to NBC itself, as well as the Universal movie studio. Microsoft coincidentally shows off its multi-touch mice
The timing is suspicious but Microsoft this week got together all of their Multi-touch mouse work and put it on display over at Engadget. Adobe shows off Flash Apps for iPhone (wha?!)
This probably isn't what you think but it is still an extremely interesting development. Techcrunch reports that Adobe is making middleware that allows developers to port their Flash apps to the iPhone.
The upcoming version of Flash CS5 will allow you the option to "Export Project to native iPhone application." You then get a file you can submit to the App Store. This isn't some far of alpha either. There are already apps in the app store (South Park!) that have been developed with Flash, though a full release isn't expected to be out until Flash CS5 - which

Apple quits US Chamber of Commerce in pro-Green protest
Apple is using its clout to force a change of attitude toward environmental matters at the highest levels of the US government, today announcing it intends pulling out of the US Chamber of Commerce because of that chamber’s “strident criticism of plans to reduce US greenhouse gas emissions”, reports The Washington Post. The Canadian iPhone Monopoly has fallen - ahead of schedule. The iPhone will go to both of Rogers' competitors in the coming months the Globe and Mail says.

HP Mini 311 with ION benchmarked: it goes very fast
We've already seen the NVIDIA ION-based HP Mini 311 perform impressively during demos, but now that the netbook is hitting reviewers it's time for some real benchmarks -- and according to the crew at Laptop, they're more than solid. Bell's 21Mbps HSPA+ due in Nov.; iPhone imminent?
Bell today confirmed its early HSPA launch and said it will launch the new network in November, about three months ahead of its self-imposed deadline of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. The network will also launch faster than expected and start off with HSPA+, which like the recent Rogers upgrade will give it a peak speed of 21Mbps downstream and about 5.76Mbps for uploads.
