Mac OS X 10.6.2 beta fixes Guest account data-munching bug
Apple has seeded developers with a new build of Mac OS X 10.6.2, the next major update for Snow Leopard, in which it has addressed the nasty Guest account data-destroying bug, reports of which have been in a flurry in recent weeks.
Apple conceded the existence of this bug earlier this week, after multiple reports complained of its existence

New iMacs may ship next week, German site suggests (Update: French too)
A German Mac retailer is offering deals on its existing iMac stocks, suggesting an attempt to clear inventory as Apple’s supply chain sets the stage for new models, potentially this coming week.
As reported by German Mac news website, Mac Essentials, m-Store is offering deals on iMacs, including 0% finance and a free HP printer.
The German site is convinced these deals suggest new models are looming, saying (Google Translate): “At next week, stay tuned: On Monday, the quarterly results on Tuesday an Apple Tuesday?”
Speculation also takes on an added dimension when we reflect on the 2-4-week shipping date currently promised on the (discounted)

Apple withdraws EyeTV App, Elgato issues statement
Apple this morning removed the Elgato EyeTV App from sale through the App store due to concerns about live TV streaming over the 3G network.
At issue was the so-called “Easter egg” which could enable streaming over 3G, as reported yesterday.
Prompted by Apple, Elgato is developing a new version of the app, this time without this secret 3G streaming ability. The company this morning also issued the following statement on the affair:
“Some test code that enabled live TV streaming over the cellular network was accidentally left in the the EyeTV App,” the company said. “Apple requested that we remove the code since their agreement with AT&T does not allow redirecting TV signals over th

Verizon starts anti "iDevice" campaign, vows Palm Pre
Verizon today sent signals that it's about to launch an aggressive campaign against Apple through a combination of marketing and devices. A leaked note regarding an upcoming ad series, nicknamed "iDoesn't," specifically targets the "iDevice" and will allegedly focus on all the features the iPhone doesn't have. Verizon asks 'if the iDoesn't, what does?'
The "there's a map for that" ad was a pretty aggressive way to broadside AT&T and the iPhone, but it looks like Verizon's just getting warmed up. We're hearing that the carrier will be kicking off a major new campaign this evening during the Yankees-Angels game that'll feature "a very different look and a whole new attitude," calling out the "iDevice" (their words, not ours) for all the things it can't do. That's a bold offensive for a carrier that historically has lacked breadth and depth in its smartphone lineup, but with the big new Android releases coming down the pike, this might be perfect timing -- and a strong implication that we can

Der in der Springfield Mall neu eröffnete Mapple Store lässt Lisas Herz höher schlagen: Ein Laden voller MyPods und MyPhones, auch die Brainiac Bar darf nicht fehlen. Der MyPod, den Lisa von Clown Krusty geschenkt bekommt wird ihr allerdings zum Verhängnis - Sie kann nicht mehr aufhören, bei MyTunes Songs und Videos herunterzuladen.

Garmin's nuvi 1450 GPS makes small, quiet blip on retail map
It's not that Garmin doesn't love the nuvi 1450 -- we're sure it loves each and every one one of its GPS units equally in their own special way or somesuch -- but it did release the device without so much as a press release or other typical fanfare. 2010 Olympic medals include material from recycled circuit boards
The just-unveiled medals for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver certainly break with a few conventions in terms of appearance, but it looks like they also contain a few surprises that aren't immediately apparent -- namely, they're all made at least partly from recycled circuit boards. Of course, the circuit boards have also been recycled beyond recognition, but each of the medals do apparently sport a one of a kind design, not to mention some considerable heft (weighing between 500 and 576 grams apiece). EyeTV aus dem App Store verschwunden
Wenn Apple eins nicht mag, dann sind es versteckte Funktionen die sich möglicherweise sogar noch mit den App Store-Regeln beißen. Wir konnten das bereits im September am 64 Emulator sehen, der durch ein Hintertürchen die Möglichkeit zur Eingabe von Basic-Kommandos ermöglichte.

TomTom-Update auf Version 1.1
Für Besitzer der Navigationspakete von TomTom steht ein Update auf Version 1.1 bereit. Laut der Beschreibung im App Store wurde die GPS-Technologie verbessert und damit die Genauigkeit sowohl bei der Standortbestimmung wie auch während der Fahrt erhöht. ITC kills InterDigital patent claim against Nokia
The US International Trade Commission (ITC) tonight exonerated Nokia by ending an investigation into claims by InterDigital that Nokia had violated its patents. The government agency has confirmed an initial decision by an Administrative Law Judge that said Nokia's use of UMTS-based 3G doesn't violate four InterDigital technology patents. Additionally, the ITC has rejected the portion of the judge's ruling that had originally found the patents valid and has denied InterDigital a chance to claim further patent violations.

CNET tests show Snow Leopard besting Windows 7 on performance and battery life
CNET went to town running Windows 7 on a Bootcamp partition of a MacBook Pro (to get exact hardware parity) and found that Snow Leopard was usually faster than Windows 7 and, at the same time, used less power.
To be fair, Snow Leopard is optimized for Apple's hardware. There is no way Microsoft can optimize Windows for all of its hardware partners' products. Get the full scoup at CNET.

Hitachi exhibits 10-inch glasses-free 3D display
Hitachi's face-recognizing, power-saving plasma may have been the outfit's show-stopper at CEATEC, but this little bugger here showed some pretty fantastic potential as well. The 10-inch 3D display, more formally known as the Full Parallax 3D TV, one-upped most every other 3D display at the show thanks to its ability to showcase dimensions sans any glasses. Default username for network resources changing
When you connect to a computer on the network, by default it will try to connect using the "Guest" account which, if enabled on the remote computer, will allow you to view public resources such as the Public folder in users' home folders. Sometimes, and especially after running certain programs, you may see the computer try to connect using a bizarre username besides "Guest".

US Mobile DTV standard finally approved
Well freaking finally. The Advanced Television System Committee just approved the Mobile DTV standard, meaning we're finally about to see for-real mobile television in the US. LG and Samsung have already made gear for the new standard, and the tech will be demoed later today before a rollout sometime. Still, it's heartening news to hear that it's finally ready -- over 800 stations are signed up to broadcast the new signal, which makes use of existing 6MHz airwaves to do everything from straight TV to video-on-demand and targeted advertising. Cool, so now we're what, just a billion years behind DVB adoption?
