ZeeVee's localcasting ZvBox gets hands-on treatment

Not that you haven't seen ZeeVee's ZvBox in the flesh before, but Dave Zatz got some hands-on time with the finalized unit. According to him, the box showed an impressive build quality though it ran "quite hot" -- likely a result of foregoing a built-in fan for a giant heatsink. Yahoo Music to close down: DRM matters
Source : ARS TechnicaYahoo suddenly announced his clients that his music store was about to close down. Nothing much serious except their DRM licences management servers will switch off this september 30.
This deadline passed, the bought music will be unusable unless one was cautious enough to burn CD's out of it. If you do so, be aware that the double encoding from AIFF and then to MP3 or AAC will cause quality loss. .
It is the third time this problem is raised after Sony and Microsoft online stores shut down. Once again to notice that the DRM are only a bother for honest people who didn't want to steal music but end up swindled, not to say robbed.
It's about time that the market players who sell protected Music commit themselves to carry on their liscence contract service at least for X years, for people to decide whether or not

In short, this decidedly gigantic mouse shoots for ergonomics by providing a place for your wrist, lower arm and maybe your elbow if you're a small enough person. Another team figures out how to convert waste heat into energy

Yahoo macht Musikdienst dicht
Yahoo hat die Kunden seines Online-Musik-Dienstes Yahoo Music per E-Mail über die Abschaltung seiner DRM-Server am 30. September informiert. Update auf iPhone OS 2.1: GPS-Navigation möglich?

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.7 freigegeben
Red Hat hat gestern Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.7 (RHEL 4.7) veröffentlicht und gleichzeitig angekündigt, dass sich zukünftige Updates auf ein notwendiges Minimum beschränken werden. Der Hersteller versucht, seine Anwender stärker von der neueren Version 5 zu überzeugen. In Produktivumgebungen wird allerdings häufig die Version 4 wegen ihrer ausgezeichneten Stabilität bevorzugt. Apple opening to all operators in all markets on iPhone?
Apple may offer the iPhone in all international markets, liberalising its distibution of the device to include all carriers, a report suggests this morning.
Bloomberg is reporting statements to this effect made by the CEO of Singapore mobile phone carrier, MobileOne. Company boss Neil Montefiore told media: "I think, before the end of the year we will be'' carrying the phones in our stores. It will become available in all markets, with all operators.''
Now, this could simply mean Apple will be offering the device in all international markets by the end of the year through operators it has already reached a deal with, or could signal a newly liberal approach.

ATi Radeon HD 4870 fällt unter 200 Euro

Music fans slapped by Yahoo! Music closure
Maybe its the continued engagement between Yahoo and Microsott, or perhaps the looming presence of billionaire investor Carl Icahn on the Yahoo board, but the online company appears to have take a leaf from the MSN Music playbook, and is dumping its legal online music customers from a great height.
Yahoo has announced plans to close the Yahoo! Music Store, and has told its legitimate, paying music loving customers it will switch-off the authorisation servers, meaning those attempting to transfer their music collections to other computers will be sunk. "They may as well have invested in Super 8," a website notes.

DNS-Lücke ermöglicht Kapern einer Website in 10 Sekunden
Der Entdecker einer Schwachstelle im Domain Name System (DNS), Dan Kaminsky, konkretisiert diese jetzt als ein grundsätzliches Problem der Namensermittlung im Internet. Er beschreibt den Fehler als ein Rennen, bei dem es darum geht, die geheime Transaktions-ID eines DNS-Servers zu benutzen, die für die Übersetzung eines Domainnamens in eine IP-Adresse verwendet wird. Durch mehrere gleichzeitige Anfragen an einen Nameserver könne ein Angreifer die geheime Transaktions-ID mit einer Wahrscheinlichkeit von 1 zu 65.000 erraten. Kaminsky selbst braucht dafür nach eigenen Angaben nur rund 10 Sekunden. Mit der Transaktions-ID sei es dann möglich, den Zwischenspeicher eines Nameservers zu manipulieren und Anfragen an legitime Websites auf beliebige Server umzuleiten.

DRAM-Hersteller weiter pessimistisch
Wie DigiTimes berichtet, fallen die Vorhersagen der größten drei taiwanesischen DRAM-Produzenten Inotera Memories, Nanya Technology und Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC) pessimistisch aus. Im Rahmen einer am Mittwoch abgehaltenen Investorenkonferenz zeigte sich vor allem Inotera mit Blick auf das dritte Quartal nur wenig zuversichtlich. Der Konzern geht davon aus, dass sich die Preise für DRAM auch in der gesamten zweiten Jahreshälfte negativ entwickeln.

Apple has posted an opening for an iPhone Security Engineer, to be based at the company's headquarters in Cupertino.

Mobile Safari im Speed-Test mit Opera Mobile und SkyFire
Todd Haselton von laptopmag.com hat Mobile Safari auf einem iPhone 3G einem vergleichenden Geschwindigkeitstest mit Opera 9.5.1 und Skyfire Beta auf anderen Smartphones unterzogen. Skyfire ist kostenlos für Windows-Mobile-Anwender erhältlich. Die Ergebnissen zeigen, dass Skyfire der schnellste der drei Browser-Kontrahenten ist., Opera dagegen bildet in Sachen Geschwindigkeit das Schlusslicht. Wenn Safari im Test 29 respektive 28 Sekunden brauchte, um die Seiten der New York Times und ESPN aufzubauen, gelang Skyfire dies in sechs beziehungsweise acht Sekunden. Rollenspiele machen süchtig - kein Wunder also, dass die Fangemeinde jubelte, als mit "Aurora Feint" das erste seiner Art spielbar auf dem iPhone an den Start ging. HDMI hat im häuslichen Multimedia-Bereich schon seit längerer Zeit die alten analogen Schnittstellen abgelöst. Microsoft ist im Begriff, die Xbox 360 als Plattform zu öffnen, um vielen Entwicklern die Möglichkeit zu geben, einfach und unkompliziert Software und Spiele für die Konsole zu entwickeln. Dies wird derzeit als Anlass zur Spekulation genommen, ob Apple hier mit einem App Store für Apple TV nachziehen wird. Microsofts Ansatz sieht folgendermaßen aus: Mitglieder des XNA Creators Club zahlen 99 US-Dollar im Jahr und können eigene Spiele Mitgliedern zum Testen anbieten. Orange already sells (or will sell) the iPhone in France, Austria, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jordan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland and Africa.
The move could reflect Apple's slow shift away from exclusive deals with carriers in other countries, though it has been left committed to existing exclusive deals in first-ramp iPhone countries, such as France, Germany, UK and and USA.

AMD dementiert Fabrikverkäufe
AMD hat Medienberichte dementiert, wonach die beiden deutschen Chip-Fabriken in ein neues Unternehmen ausgelagert und verkauft werden könnten. So nämlich hatte der Austin American Statesman am 18. China überholt USA bei Anzahl der Internetanschlüsse
Einem Bericht des staatlichen China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) zufolge hat die Zahl der Internetanschlüsse in China im Juni eine Rekordmarke erreicht. Gegenüber 2007 stieg die Zahl um 56,2 Prozent von 162 Millionen auf 253 Millionen, wovon 214 Millionen als Breitbandanschluss realisiert sind. Im Juni 2006 ermittelte die Behörde 123 Millionen Internet-Nutzer. Damit reklamiert das Land der Mitte für sich mehr Internetanschlüsse als die USA.

Nehalem Already in September?
Officially, the new Intel processor known as Nehalem should only arrive by the end of the year. However, according to sources at motherboard makers quoted by Digitimes, some of Intel's Nehalem-based processors will be introduced in September, with products based on the corresponding CPUs and motherboards available early October. If this will most likely be too late for unveiling new MacBook Pro models, it nevertheless speeds up the release of the new Mac Pro/Xserve.

Google Maps for Pedestrians Soon
If the integrated GPS provides a useful feature to the iPhone 3G, its usage is mostly interesting for pedestrians than in a car as there is no real guiding application able to benefit from the integrated GPS currently available for the iPhone. In addition, Google Maps keeps calculating optimal journey for a car to go from A to B, it ignores the pedestrians area while taking care of one-direction streets!
This might change as Google is currently working on a guiding feature dedicated to pedestrians; currently in beta test it should soon be available to the public. Intel's dual-core Atom 330 processor to ship in Q4 2008

US Army turns to toy company to develop new weapon

We're not quite sure how the pitch session went with this one, but it looks like the US Army was so impressed by toymaker Lund and Company's Hydrogen Fuel Rocket that it decided to recruit the company to build a decidedly more lethal version of it. The new system, dubbed the Variable Velocity Weapon System, will apparently be able to be switched between lethal and non-lethal modes, and be loaded with rubber bullets, actual bullets, or other projectiles, which are fired by mixing a liquid or gaseous fuel with air in a combustion chamber.
